Abstract
Dunaliella salina, a halophilic microalga, is well known for its ability to produce β-carotene and has significant commercial applications. The actively growing green culture turns to orange color due to photosensitization, during which there is a significant reduction in chlorophyll content (chlorophyll A and B: 16.04 and 2.80-1.70, 0.21 mg/g dry basis, respectively) with an increase in carotenoids (α- and β-carotenes: 1.60 and 4.81 mg/g dry basis). This change has been accompanied by a considerable variation in protein content (green: 34.27% and orange: 18.57%) and ash content (green: 38.37% and orange: 58.11%). To avoid extreme heat sensitivity, high-pressure (HP) processing, a nonthermal technology, has been applied to pigment-rich Dunaliella. This research aimed to examine the effects of HP treatment (300-600 MPa/15 min) on the rheological, structural, and particle size distribution of Dunaliella in two consecutive cell growth stages (e.g., green and orange). Oscillatory rheology data displayed a distinct protein denaturation at 57.87 °C for untreated green cells, whereas orange cells did not. Conversely, several denaturation peaks appeared in the HP-treated orange cell suspensions, and those peaks remained unaffected by pressure treatment. Isothermal heating exhibited liquid-like behavior for green cells, whereas the solid-like behavior was evident for orange cells. PSD displayed a shift of unimodal to bimodal distributions of Dunaliella cells after the HP treatment. Orange cells exhibited PSD parameters of Dv10: 8.60 μm, Dv50: 71.6 μm, and Dv90: 255 μm. XRD patterns of both green and orange cells are almost identical, exhibiting several peaks that were attributed to metal ions absorbed by the cells from the growth media. Overall, a significant difference in compositional and functional properties was observed between the green and orange Dunaliella biomass.

Abstract
Amidst the mounting environmental crises and ever-increasing global population, the quest for sustainable food production and resource utilization solutions has taken center stage. Microalgae, with Chlorella species at the forefront, present a promising avenue. They serve as a bountiful protein source and can be conveniently grown in waste streams, thereby tackling food security, environmental sustainability, and economic feasibility. This article embarks on a comprehensive journey through recent research on Chlorella by shedding light on its unique characteristics, its market value, cultivation techniques, and harvesting methods. It also delves into traditional and innovative extraction methods, underscoring the hurdles and breakthroughs in achieving high protein yields from the Chlorella biomass. Moreover, exploration of the protein's nutritional properties, bioactive peptides, and techno-functional attributes, enhance its potential for food applications. Further, this review also examines current market trends in consumer acceptance of this alternative protein and discusses strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in their production. By providing invaluable insights into the current status and future prospects of Chlorella protein, it aspires to make a significant contribution to the ongoing dialogue on sustainable food production and resource management.

Abstract
Efficient microalgae harvesting and dewatering are critical processes for a range of applications, including the production of raw materials, nutritional supplements, pharmaceuticals, sustainable biofuels, and wastewater treatment. The optimization of these processes poses significant challenges due to the need for high efficiency and sustainability while managing costs and energy consumption. This review comprehensively addresses these challenges by focusing on the development and application of various membrane filtration technologies specifically designed for the effective harvesting and dewatering of algal biomass. Membrane filtration has emerged as a predominant method due to its ability to handle large volumes of microalgae with relatively low energy requirements. This review systematically examines the different membrane-based technologies and their effectiveness in recovering valuable components from algal biomass, such as lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates. The discussion begins with an overview of the physical characteristics of microalgae and their cultivation conditions, which are critical for understanding how these factors influence the performance of membrane filtration processes. Key aspects such as the features of algal cells, the presence of algal organic matter, and transparent exopolymer particles are explored in detail. The review also delves into various strategies for improving membrane antifouling properties, which are essential for maintaining the efficiency and longevity of the filtration systems. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of different membrane techniques are reviewed, highlighting their respective performance in separating microalgae and dewatering. Finally, the review offers insights into future research directions and technological advancements that could further enhance the efficiency and sustainability of microalgae processing. This comprehensive evaluation aims to provide a thorough understanding of current membrane technologies, their applications, and the ongoing developments necessary to overcome existing limitations and improve overall process performance.

Abstract
The improvement of food security and nutrition has attracted wide attention, and microalgae as the most promising food source are being further explored. This paper comprehensively introduces basic and functional nutrients rich in microalgae by elaborated tables incorporating a wide variety of studies and summarizes factors influencing their accumulation effects. Subsequently, multiple comparisons of nutrients were conducted, indicating that microalgae have a high protein content. Moreover, controllable production costs and environmental friendliness prompt microalgae into the list that contains more promising and reliable future food. However, microalgae and -based foods approved and sold are limited strictly, showing that safety is a key factor affecting dietary consideration. Notably, sensory profiles and ingredient clarity play an important role in improving the acceptance of microalgae-based foods. Finally, based on the bottleneck in the microalgae food industry, suggestions for its future development were discussed.

Abstract
Nannochloropsis is a genus of microalgae widely recognized as potential sources of distinct lipids, particularly polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). These may be obtained through extraction, which has conventionally been performed using hazardous organic solvents. To substitute such solvents with "greener" alternatives, several technologies have been studied to increase their extraction potential. Distinct technologies utilize different principles to achieve such objective; while some aim at disrupting the cell walls of the microalgae, others target the extraction per se. While some methods have been utilized independently, several technologies have also been combined, which has proven to be an effective strategy. The current review focuses on the technologies explored in the last five years to extract or increase extraction yields of fatty acids from Nannochloropsis microalgae. Depending on the extraction efficacy of the different technologies, distinct types of lipids and/or fatty acids are obtained accordingly. Moreover, the extraction efficiency may vary depending on the Nannochloropsis species. Hence, a case-by-case assessment must be conducted in order to ascertain the most suited technology, or tailor a specific one, to be applied to recover a particular fatty acid (or fatty acid class), namely PUFA, including eicosapentaenoic acid.

Abstract
Globally, the demand for energy is increasing with an emphasis on green fuels for a sustainable future. As the urge for alternative fuels is accelerating, microalgae have emerged as a promising source that can not only produce high lipid but many other platform chemicals. Moreover, it is a better alternative in comparison to conventional feedstock due to yearlong easy and mass cultivation, carbon fixation, and value-added products extraction. To date, numerous studies have been done to elucidate these organisms for large-scale fuel production. However, enhancing the lipid synthesis rate and reducing the production cost still remain a major bottleneck for its economic viability. Therefore, this study compiles information on algae-based biodiesel production with an emphasis on its unit operations from strain selection to biofuel production. Additionally, strategies to enhance lipid accumulation by incorporating genetic, and metabolic engineering and the use of leftover biomass for harnessing bio-products have been discussed. Besides, implementing a biorefinery for extracting oil followed by utilizing leftover biomass to generate value-added products such as nanoparticles, biofertilizers, biochar, and biopharmaceuticals has also been discussed.

Abstract
This work aims at studying the techno-economic feasibility to produce an extract, at a small industrial-production scale, from a Tisochrysis lutea's paste, in view of cosmetic applications. The paste was first thawed, diluted and centrifuged to get a crude water extract. Then, two successive stages of membrane filtration were carried out: the first one to essentially remove/retain the particles (cellular debris) by microfiltration and the second one to concentrate (ultrafiltration) the soluble compounds of the permeate from the previous step. The robustness of the processing chain has been demonstrated following the production of three similar extracts with more than 30 L input material each. Around 54% of the final extract was composed of proteins and carbohydrates. The final ingredient was assessed for genomic activity and showed multiple positive responses. Finally, an economic analysis was performed, which demonstrated that the major cost is linked to centrifugation step. The total manpower represents the highest cost of the OPEX categories.

Abstract
Cell lysis is an essential step in many studies related to biology and medicine. Based on the scale and medium that cell lysis is carried out, there are three main types of the cell lysis: 1) lysis of the cells in the surrounding environment, 2) lysis of the isolated or cultured cells and 3) Single cell lysis. Conventionally, several cell lysis methods have been developed, such as freeze-thawing, bead beating, incursion in liquid nitrogen, sonication and enzymatic and chemical based approaches. In recent years, various novel technologies have been employed to develop new methods of cell lysis. The aim of studies in this field is to introduce more precise and efficient tools or to reduce the costs of cell lysis procedures. Nanostructure based lysis methods, acoustic oscillation, electrical current, irradiation, bacteria-mediated cell lysis, magnetic ionic liquids, bacteriophage genes, monolith columns, hydraulic forces and steam explosion are some examples of new developed cell lysis methods. Abstract
Microalgae have evolved into a promising sustainable source of a wide range of compounds, including protein, carbohydrates, biomass, vitamins, animal feed, and cosmetic products. The process of extraction of intracellular composites in the microalgae industry is largely determined by the microalgal species, cultivation methods, cell wall disruption techniques, and extraction strategies. Various techniques have been applied to disrupt the cell wall and recover the intracellular molecules from microalgae, including non-mechanical, mechanical, and combined methods. A comprehensive understanding of the cell disruption processes in each method is essential to improve the efficiency of current technologies and further development of new methods in this field. In this review, an overview of microalgal cell disruption techniques and an analysis of their performance and challenges are provided. A number of studies on cell disruption and microalgae extraction are examined in order to highlight the key challenges facing the field of microalgae and their future prospects. In addition, the amount of product recovery for each species of microalgae and the important parameters for each technique are discussed. Finally, pulsed electric field (PEF)-assisted treatments, which are becoming an attractive option due to their simplicity and effectiveness in extracting microalgae compounds, are discussed in detail.

Abstract
Antibiotic fermentation residue (AFR) is a form of bioavailable matter, that represents a typical category of hazardous waste associated with drug production in China. The disposal of these residues seriously restricts the sustainable development of the pharmaceutical industry. In this study, the steam explosion and aerobic composting (SEA-CBS) system was developed to thoroughly convert neomycin fermentation residue to organic fertilizer. The results implied that the ultimate removal rate of antibiotics was as high as 99.9% in all cases, including macrolide (kitasamycin and spiramycin), lincosamide (lincomycin), and beta-lactam (cephalosporin and penicillin) antibiotic biowastes. Pot experiments were also conducted to study the attenuation rule of antibiotic residues in the soil, and the distribution of antibiotic resistant genes from trace antibiotics. The produced fertilizer presented the better performance on mustard growth than conventional fertilizers. The average plant height and biomass were increased by 14.33%-55.83% and 136.71%-326.83%, respectively, after SEA-CBS pretreatment. Moreover, neomycin was the primary selective pressure, and six antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) correlated with neomycin were screened. The acc(6')ib gene was identified as the target ARGs, the main resistance mechanism was antibiotic inactivation, and the absolute and relative abundances were 1.06 × 105 ± 3.80 × 104 copies/g and 6.23 × 10-4 ± 1.75 × 10-4 copies/16 s in the NFR-amended soils. The microbial community analysis showed that the variation of the soil microbial community was not dominated by neomycin fermentation residue (NFR) at initial concentrations below 0.42 μg/kg soil. This work demonstrated that the SEA-CBS system not only functioned as an efficient technology for concurrent neomycin sulfate removal and NFR composting, but also applied to a wide range of other antibiotic bio-wastes, which may benefit the recycling of AFR, as well as the data provide a theoretical basis for future agricultural utilization and safe evaluation.

Abstract
Subcritical dimethyl ether, a green solvent, was used to extract lipids from microalgae. The effect of the water content on the process was firstly investigated. Secondly, microalgal samples were subjected to five cell disruptions, and the effects on raw lipid and fatty acid methyl ester, and its profile were evaluated. Among them, heating, microwave, and ultrasonic treatments greatly improved extraction. Mechanism analysis revealed the improvements by the three treatments were due to increased cell wall permeability rather than to complete cell disruption. After the extraction, microalgal cells with lipid being well-extracted were shriveled with extensive surface folds, indicating a loss of intracellular substances, but the cell structure was undamaged. As for dewatering performance, extraction process removed almost all of the free water but left bound water. Finally, the potential of the residues after lipid extraction to serve as solid fuel was evaluated by combustion characteristics and heating value calculation.

Abstract
Microalgae are known as a rich source of bioactive compounds which exhibit different biological activities. Increased demand for sustainable biomass for production of important bioactive components with various potential especially therapeutic applications has resulted in noticeable interest in algae. Utilisation of microalgae in multiple scopes has been growing in various industries ranging from harnessing renewable energy to exploitation of high-value products. The focuses of this review are on production and the use of value-added components obtained from microalgae with current and potential application in the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, cosmeceutical, energy and agri-food industries, as well as for bioremediation. Moreover, this work discusses the advantage, potential new beneficial strains, applications, limitations, research gaps and future prospect of microalgae in industry.

Abstract
Economic growth and the rapid increase in the world population has led to a greater need for natural resources, which in turn, has put pressure on said resources along with the environment. Water, food, and energy, among other resources, pose a huge challenge. Numerous essential resources, including organic substances and valuable nutrients, can be found in wastewater, and these could be recovered with efficient technologies. Protein recovery from waste streams can provide an alternative resource that could be utilized as animal feed. Membrane separation, adsorption, and microbe-assisted protein recovery have been proposed as technologies that could be used for the aforementioned protein recovery. This present study focuses on the applicability of different technologies for protein recovery from different wastewaters. Membrane technology has been proven to be efficient for the effective concentration of proteins from waste sources. The main emphasis of the present short communication is to explore the possible strategies that could be utilized to recover or restore proteins from different wastewater sources. The presented study emphasizes the applicability of the recovery of proteins from various waste sources using membranes and the combination of the membrane process. Future research should focus on novel technologies that can help in the efficient extraction of these high-value compounds from wastes. Lastly, this short communication will evaluate the possibility of integrating membrane technology. This study will discuss the important proteins present in different industrial waste streams, such as those of potatoes, poultry, dairy, seafood and alfalfa, and the possible state of the art technologies for the recovery of these valuable proteins from the wastewater.

Abstract
Biotechnological application of microalgae cultures at large scale has significant potential in the various fields of biofuels, food and feed, cosmetic, pharmaceutic, environmental remediation and water treatment. Despite this great potential application, industrialisation of microalgae culture and valorisation is still faced with serious remaining challenges in culture scale-up, harvesting and extraction of target molecules. This review presents a general summary of current techniques for harvesting and extraction of biomolecules from microalgae, their relative merits and potential for industrial application. The cell wall composition and its impact on microalgae cell disruption is discussed. Additionally, more recent progress and promising experimental methods and studies are summarised that would allow the reader to further investigate the state of the art. A final survey of energetic assessments of the different techniques is also made. Bead milling and high-pressure homogenisation seem to give clear advantages in terms of target high value compounds extraction from microalgae, with enzyme hydrolysis as a promising emerging technique. Future industrialisation of microalgae for high scale biotechnological processing will require the establishment of universal comparison-standards that would enable easy assessment of one technique against another.
