Prevalence of depression, anxiety, and associated factors in immigrant pregnant women in Türkiye: A cross-sectional study

The prevalence of depression and anxiety in pregnant women is increasing and this is more important in migrants who are in the vulnerable group. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of depression and anxiety in Syrian immigrant pregnant women admitted to a Migrant Health Center and the associated factors. The study is a cross-sectional study. A questionnaire prepared using sociodemographic characteristics and the Beck depression and anxiety inventories in Arabic was applied to the participants. The study was conducted with immigrant pregnant women who applied to the Migrant Health Center between July 8, 2022, and December 31, 2022. The study was conducted through health workers who speak Arabic and had received training on the subject beforehand. The mean age of the research group was 26.67 ± 5.98 years. Of the participants, 73.0 percent (%) had primary education or less, 95.0% had low income, 87.2% had 3 or less children and 98.5% described their health status as good or very good. The mean Beck anxiety inventory score of the participants was found to be 4.65 ± 3.17. The mean Beck depression inventory score was found to be 4.48 ± 2.53. Smoking and first pregnancy status were found to be associated with anxiety, whereas smoking and history of delivery beyond 42 weeks were found to be associated with depression (P ˂ .05). Anxiety and depression levels of immigrant pregnant women were found to be very low. Minimal anxiety was found in 99.3% of the immigrant pregnant women and 97.1% had no symptoms of depression. It is thought that effective psychosocial support activities for immigrant pregnant women should be carried out in a way to cover the entire target group.

Effectiveness of mobile-based intervention Self-care for Pregnant Women at Work: A randomized controlled trial

OBJECTIVES

While the number of employed women has increased worldwide, they still have difficulties in practicing prenatal care at work. Previous studies have found that smartphone-based prenatal education has increased access to healthcare and contributed to improving pregnant women's health. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a mobile-based intervention-Self-care for Pregnant Women at Work (SPWW)-in enhancing the self-care practices of pregnant women who work.

METHODS

A randomized repeated measures design was used in the study. The 126 women were randomly assigned to either an intervention group that used the SPWW mobile application for 4 weeks or a control group that used an application that only had surveys. Both groups completed surveys at preintervention, week 2, and week 4 of their participation in the study. The primary study variables were work stress, pregnancy stress, fear of childbirth, pregnancy experience, and health practices in pregnancy.

RESULTS

A total of 116 participants' data (60 in the intervention group and 56 in the control group) were analyzed. Significant group-by-time interaction effects were noted for pregnancy stress, pregnancy hassles, and health practices in pregnancy. The effect size of the intervention was small to medium for pregnancy stress (d = -0.425), pregnancy uplifts (d = 0.333), pregnancy hassles (d = -0.599), and health practices in pregnancy (d = 0.490).

CONCLUSIONS

A mobile-based intervention using a comprehensive health application is effective in pregnant women at work. Developing educational content and methods targeted at this population would be helpful.

Development and application of a couple-centered antenatal education program in Korea

Purpose

This study was conducted to develop a couple-centered antenatal education program and to test the program’s feasibility.

Methods

With a preliminary-experimental study design, 33 pregnant couples who were expecting their first child participated in this study. The program consisted of four sessions (1 hour/session/week) of education and counseling. Data were collected before and after the intervention from September 2018 to April 2019 at a women’s hospital in Daejeon, Korea, with demographic data forms, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, Perceived Stress Scale, Maternal–Fetal Attachment Scale, Korean Newborn Care Confidence Scale, Wijma Delivery Expectancy/Experience Questionnaire, and Dyadic Adjustment Scale-10.

Results

The pregnant women and their husbands were on average 32.30±3.10 and 33.21±6.25 years old, respectively. The mean marriage duration was 2.34±1.63 years, the gestational age was 31.30±2.66 weeks, and 78.8% of the couples had a planned pregnancy. After the program, both the pregnant women and their husbands showed significant improvements in attachment to the fetus and confidence in providing infant care. Prenatal depression, prenatal stress, and fear of childbirth in pregnant women significantly decreased after completing the program. However, the dyadic adjustment score did not change significantly either in the pregnant women or their husbands.

Conclusion

A couple-centered antenatal education program seems to be effective for couples adjusting to parenthood, but further studies should explore ways to have a positive impact on couples’ relationships.
