Development, Feasibility, and Preliminary Effects of a Hybrid-Mode Multicomponent Music Intervention for Women Undergoing Mastectomy

BACKGROUND

Music listening interventions have been used to manage preoperative anxiety and postoperative pain in women undergoing breast cancer (BC) using face-to-face mode and music that was relevant to the patients' culture; however, the interventions were not underpinned by any theories.

OBJECTIVE

To assess the feasibility and preliminary effects of a theory-driven multicomponent music intervention on preoperative and postoperative patient outcomes in African women with BC undergoing mastectomy.

METHODS

This study was a multicenter, single-blind randomized controlled trial with qualitative interview. A total of 36 women scheduled to undergo mastectomy were recruited from Nigeria and Malawi and randomly assigned to either the intervention group or the control group. Quantitative data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon signed rank tests, whereas qualitative data were analyzed using the inductive approach.

RESULTS

The multicomponent music intervention was effective in reducing participants' preoperative anxiety and enhancing satisfaction with care on the day of surgery, reducing postoperative pain at 24 and 48 hours after surgery, and reducing systolic and diastolic blood pressure at 48 hours after surgery. The qualitative data corroborated these findings.

CONCLUSION

The study's findings indicated that the theory-driven multicomponent music intervention was feasible, acceptable, and effective in reducing preoperative anxiety and postoperative pain, optimizing vital signs, and enhancing satisfaction with care among African women with BC undergoing mastectomy.

IMPLICATION FOR PRACTICE

The study's findings indicate that nurses in clinical settings can integrate the intervention into the plan of care of women with BC beginning with their surgery booking visit.

Three-decade quantitative evaluation of cancer-related research in Nigeria from 1990-2019

Introduction: There exists a knowledge gap in the quality and quantity of cancer-related research in Nigeria. This review gives a report on cancer research literature indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) in Nigeria from 1990 -2019. Materials and methods: The data used in the present study were published research papers retrieved from the Web of Science. Results: A total of 629 research articles were published within this period across 276 journals. The highest number of articles was published in 2019 (n = 62), while the least was in 1992 (n = 2). However, the last ten years witnessed explosive growth, and it accounted for 63% of the total number of articles. The most relevant authors are Olapade HI (33 articles), Huo D (28 articles), and Ogundiran TO (21 articles). The most relevant sources in the area of cancer research in Nigeria are Nigerian Journal of Clinical Practice (52 articles), East African Medical Journal (23 articles), and African Health Sciences (21 articles). The most relevant author's affiliations are University of Ibadan (n=206), University of Nigeria, Nsukka (n = 115), and Obafemi Awolowo University (n = 105). Conclusion: The results from this study show that Nigerian institutions need to collaborate extensively with foreign institutions and partner with industries in order to improve the quality of their research output.

Knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of Nigerian parents towards human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccines

INTRODUCTION

Human papilloma virus (HPV) is a renowned cause of cervical cancer, which has resulted in high mortality of individuals. Cervical cancer could be reduced by screening and HPV vaccination. This study investigated knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of parents towards HPV vaccines in Ibadan, South-West L.G.A, Oyo State, Nigeria.

METHODS

A cross-sectional descriptive design was used with a multi-stage sampling technique to select 186 parents from Ibadan South-West local government area of Oyo state. A validated structured questionnaire (r=0.78) was used for data collection.

RESULTS

The mean age of the respondents was 30.2 years. The parents had good knowledge of the HPV vaccine (mean=3.12) and most had a high level of knowledge (98.9%). Parents demonstrated negative attitude (mean=2.97) and positive perception to HPV vaccines. Major factors affecting their attitude towards the uptake of HPV vaccines were: finance (86%), level of education (81%), distance to health facilities (83%), inadequate knowledge about the vaccine (89%), fear of promiscuity (82%), and concern about adverse effect (80%).

CONCLUSIONS

Factors responsible for a negative attitude were the high cost, distance from vaccination site, inadequate knowledge, fear of subsequent adolescent promiscuity and concern about adverse effects. In light of the benefits of HPV vaccination, the Nigerian government should make HPV vaccines available, affordable, and accessible to the public.

Incidence and mortality of cancer in the Volta Region of Ghana

IMPACT STATEMENT

Region-specific cancer reports are essential in knowing the common cancers in specific populations. This study reports all cancer types recorded in the major hospitals in the Volta Region of Ghana, a population that is sparsely captured in the national cancer registries. The study identified the common cancers as well as the death rates in the Volta Region, hence contributing to the national effort to report cancer data. Although not comprising all the elements of a cancer registry, our data will augment the effort of the two national cancer registries in Ghana to provide the national cancer reports.
