Abstract
Several modifiable health factors in Life's Essential 8 (LE8) are linked to nutritional anemia and can assess overall cardiovascular health (CVH). This study explored the associations of CVH measured by LE8 score with nutritional anemia and iron deficiency anemia (IDA), including the mediating role of inflammatory biomarkers. This prospective cohort study included 181,069 participants from UK Biobank. CVH was categorized into low (0-49), medium (50-79), and high (80-100) based on the LE8 score. Weibull regression models were used to quantify the association between CVH and nutritional anemia and IDA. During a median follow-up of 8.6 years, 6749 cases of nutritional anemia occurred, including 92% (6223/6749) IDA cases. After adjusting for covariates, participants with moderate CVH and high CVH had a 44% and 54% lower risk of nutritional anemia (Moderate: hazard ratio [HR] 0.56; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.51-0.60; High: HR 0.46; 95% CI, 0.41-0.51), and a 46% and 54% lower risk of IDA (Moderate: HR 0.54; 95% CI, 0.50-0.59; High: HR 0.46; 95% CI, 0.41-0.51), respectively, compared to those with low CVH. An L-shaped association was observed between CVH score and both types of anemia. Inflammatory biomarkers explained 22.1% and 21.6% of the associations between CVH and nutritional anemia and IDA, respectively. Higher CVH scores were associated with lower risk of nutritional anemia and IDA, and these associations may be partially mediated by inflammatory biomarkers. These findings emphasize the importance of CVH and inflammation in preventing nutritional anemia.

Abstract
Background Studies have shown that the disease burden of anaemia varies globally, yet they have not yet determined its exact extent in East Asian countries specifically. We thus aimed to investigate the prevalence and years lived with disability (YLDs) due to anaemia from 1990 to 2021 in China, Japan, and South Korea. Methods We extracted the prevalence and YLDs with their age-standardised rates (ASRs) in China, Japan, and South Korea from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021, stratified by sex, age, and causes. We then examined the temporal trend of anaemia burden from 1990 to 2021 using joinpoint analysis and the association of anaemia burden with the Human Development Index and Universal Health Index through Spearman's correlation analysis. Results In 2021, anaemia affected 136 million people in China (95% uncertainty interval (UI) = 131, 141), with ASRs of prevalence of 8.9% (95% UI = 8.6, 9.3), and accounted for 3.0 million YLDs (95% UI = 2.0, 4.4). It affected 13.6 million people in Japan (95% UI = 11.8, 16.0), with ASRs of prevalence of 7.4% (95% UI = 6.1, 9.0), and caused 181 thousand YLDs (95% UI = 108, 282). It also affected 2.7 million individuals in South Korea (95% UI = 2.4, 3.0), with ASRs of prevalence of 5.2% (95% UI = 4.6, 5.7), and led to 34 thousand YLDs (95% UI = 22, 55). We observed a significant gender discrepancy in the anaemia burden in these three countries, with the prevalence and YLD rates in women being almost twice as high as those in men. Moreover, the peak age of the anaemia burden shifted toward higher age groups in all three countries, particularly in Japan. Chronic kidney disease was responsible for a growing share of anaemia cases and YLDs, especially in adults aged more than 60 years in Japan and South Korea. Haemoglobinopathies were another noticeable cause of anaemia in China, though dietary iron deficiency remained the leading cause. Both socioeconomic development and essential health service coverage showed negative associations with the anaemia burden in the three countries in the past three decades, though with differential patterns. Conclusions Anaemia remains a major public health issue in China, Japan, and South Korea; targeted surveillance and interventions are recommended for high-risk populations and cause-specific anaemia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anemia in infants and young children can have long-term effects on cognitive and physical development. In Ma'anshan City, China, there has been growing concern about the prevalence of anemia among children aged 6 to 36 mo. Understanding the factors influencing this condition is crucial for targeted interventions and improving overall child health in the region. AIM To analyze the anemia status and influencing factors of infants and young children aged 6 to 36 mo in Ma'anshan City, China. Providing scientific evidence for reducing the incidence of anemia and improving the health level of children in this age group. METHODS The study encompassed 37698 infants and young children, aged from 6 to 36 mo, who underwent health examinations at the Ma'anshan Maternal and Child Health Hospital from January 2018 to October 2022 were included in the study. Basic information, physical examination, and hemoglobin detection data were collected. Descriptive analysis was used to analyze the prevalence of anemia in children in the region, and univariate analysis was used to analyze the influencing factors of anemia. RESULTS The mean hemoglobin level of infants and young children aged 9 to 36 mo increased with age, and the anemia detection rate decreased with age. The anemia detection rate in rural infants aged 6, 9, and 12 mo was higher than that in urban infants. Although the anemia detection rate was higher in 6-mo-old boys than girls, it was higher in 24-mo-old girls than boys. There were statistically significant differences in the anemia detection rates among 9-mo-old and 12-mo-old infants with different nutritional statuses (emaciation, overweight, obese, and normal). Moreover, there were no statistically significant differences in anemia detection rates among infants and young children with different nutritional statuses at other ages. Besides, the anemia detection rates in obese infants aged 9 and 12 mo were higher than those in normal and overweight infants, with statistically significant differences. Finally, there were no statistically significant differences in the anemia detection rates between emaciation infants and those with other nutritional statuses. CONCLUSION The anemia situation among infants and young children aged 6 to 36 mo in Ma'anshan City, China, is relatively prominent and influenced by various factors. Our result shown that attention should be paid to the anemic infant and young child population, with strengthened education and targeted prevention and dietary guidance to help them establish good living habits, improve nutritional status, and reduce the occurrence of anemia to improve children's health levels.

Abstract
Background and objectives Anemia remains a major public health problem worldwide. This study examined the relationship between anemia and the nutritional status of non-pregnant women aged 19–49 years in Indonesia. Methods and study design The data were derived from the 2018 Basic Health Research Data of Indonesia. We used information from 11,471 non-pregnant women aged 19–49 years. The dependent variable was anemia (hemoglobin level <12 g/dL). The independent variable was women’s nutritional status, a combined indicator of body mass index (BMI) and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC). Our analysis controlled for women’s age, education, physical activity, fruit and vegetable consumption, and the presence of communicable or non-communicable diseases. We performed logistic regression analyses. Results The prevalence of anemia in non-pregnant women aged 19–49 years was 22.3% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 21.4–23.3). Women with overweight and obesity were less likely to develop anemia than those with a normal BMI, regardless of their MUAC score. The highest odds for developing anemia were observed in underweight women with low MUAC scores (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 2.83, 95%CI: 2.19–3.68). Higher odds ratios were also observed in women with insufficient physical activity, despite their sufficient consumption of fruits or vegetables (aOR = 1.87, 95%CI: 1.06–3.28). However, women who had been diagnosed with a non-communicable disease had a reduced likelihood of developing anemia (aOR = 0.75, 95%CI: 0.67–0.83). Conclusions Strengthening health promotion activities to improve nutritional status and healthy behaviors, particularly a healthy diet, remains important for women in Indonesia to reduce the prevalence of anemia and improve their overall health status.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malnutrition is a common and significant problem in older adults. Insight into factors underlying malnutrition is needed to develop strategies that can improve the nutritional status. Compromised intestinal integrity caused by gut wall hypoperfusion due to atherosclerosis of the mesenteric arteries in the aging gastrointestinal tract may adversely affect nutrient uptake. The presence of compromised intestinal integrity in older adults is not known. The aim of this study is to provide a proof-of-concept that intestinal integrity is compromised in older adults during daily activities. METHODS Adults aged ≥75 years living independently without previous gastrointestinal disease or abdominal surgery were asked to complete a standardized walking test and to consume a standardized meal directly afterwards to challenge the mesenteric blood flow. Intestinal fatty acid-binding protein (I-FABP) was measured as a plasma marker of intestinal integrity, in blood samples collected before (baseline) and after the walking test, directly after the meal, and every 15 min thereafter to 75 min postprandially. RESULTS Thirty-four participants (median age 81 years; 56% female) were included. Of the participants, 18% were malnourished (PG-SGA score ≥ 4), and 32% were at risk of malnutrition (PG-SGA score, 2 or 3). An I-FABP increase of ≥50% from baseline was considered a meaningful loss of intestinal integrity and was observed in 12 participants (35%; 8 females; median age 80 years). No significant differences were observed in either baseline characteristics, walking test scores, or calorie/macronutrient intake between the groups with and without a ≥ 50% I-FABP peak. CONCLUSION This study is first to indicate that intestinal integrity is compromised during daily activities in a considerable part of older adults living independently.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES This study examined the association of depressive symptoms, stress perception, and suicidal ideation with overall dietary quality using the newly developed Korean healthy eating index (KHEI). SUBJECTS/METHODS This study included 9,607 adults (3,939 men and 5,668 women, ≥ 19 years) who participated in the 6th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013 and 2015. The KHEI scores were calculated using the food frequency questionnaire data. Survey logistic regression analyses were performed to analyze the association between psychiatric distress and dietary quality. RESULTS The percentage of subjects with experience of depressive mood, higher stress perception, and suicidal ideation was 8.2%, 25.0%, and 3.7% in men and 15.4%, 27.3%, and 6.0% in women, respectively. The mean KHEI score was 61.5 ± 0.29 in men and 64.8 ± 0.24 in women (P < 0.001). The present study found a difference in the adherence to specific dietary components of the KHEI between sexes. Men experiencing depressive symptoms were less likely to eat meat, fish, eggs, and beans, while depressed women showed lower vegetable intake. Both men and women with suicidal ideation showed a lower intake of vegetables. The men with stress had a lower breakfast eating score than those without stress (7.21 vs. 6.77, P = 0.016). The multivariate-adjusted odds ratios for depressive symptoms, stress perception, and the suicidal idea in women with the highest quartile of KHEI scores compared to the lowest quartile was 0.69 (95% confidence interval, 0.51-0.92), 0.73 (0.58-0.82), and 0.52 (0.33-0.82), respectively and significant dose-response associations were observed (P for trends < 0.05 for all). On the other hand, these associations were not observed in men after adjusting for the confounding variables (P for trends > 0.05 for all). CONCLUSIONS Poor adherence to dietary recommendations is associated with psychological distress, especially in women.

Abstract
Iron is involved in many types of metabolism, including oxygen transport in hemoglobin. Iron deficiency (ID), ie a decrease in circulating iron, can have severe consequences. We provide an update on iron metabolism and ID, highlighting the particularities in older adults (OAs). There are three iron compartments in the human body: 1) the functional compartment, which consists of heme proteins including hemoglobin, myoglobin and respiratory enzymes; 2) iron reserves (IR), which consist mainly of liver stocks and are stored as ferritin; and 3) transferrin. There are two types of ID. Absolute ID is characterized by a decrease in IR. Its main pathophysiological mechanism is bleeding, which is often digestive and can be due to neoplasia, frequent in OAs. Biological assessment shows low serum ferritin and transferrin saturation (TS) levels. Furthermore, hypochromic microcytic anemia is frequent, and the serum-soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) level is high. Functional ID, in which IR are high or normal, is due to inflammation, which is also frequent in OAs, particularly in its chronic form. Biological assessments show high serum ferritin, normal or low TS, and normal sTfR levels. Moreover, C-reactive protein is elevated, and there is moderate non-regenerative non-macrocytic anemia. The main characteristics of iron metabolism anomalies in the elderly are the high frequency of ID (20% of ID with anemia in adults ≥85 years) and the severity of its consequences, which include cognitive impairment in case of ID or iron overload and decrease of physical activity in case of ID. In conclusion, causes of ID are frequently intertwined in OAs as a result of the polymorbidity that characterizes them. ID can have dramatic consequences, especially in frail OAs. Thus, measuring the appropriate biological markers prevents errors in the positive diagnosis of ID type, clarifies etiology, and informs treatment-related decision-making.
