Abstract
Purpose
Some studies indicated that gender is associated with prognostic of cancer, However, currently the prognostic value of gender for gastric cardia adenocarcinoma (GCA) survival is unclear. The aim of our study is to reveal the influence of gender on the prognosis of patients with GCA.
Patients and methods
A total of 42,345 cases Chinese GCA patients were enrolled from our previously established GCA and esophageal cancer databases. The clinicopathological characteristics were retrieved from medical records in hospital. The follow-up was performed through letter, telephone or home interview. Among GCA patients, there were 32,544 (76.9%) male patients with the median age 62 years (range 17–97) and 9,801 (23.1%) female patients with the median age 61 years (range 17–95 years). The Chi-square test and Kaplan–Meier method were used to compare the continuous variables and survival. Cox proportional hazards model was used for competing risk analyses, hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were evaluated.
Results
Men had shorter GCA-specific survival than women by multivariate analysis (HR 1.114; 95% CI 1.061 to 1.169; P < 0.001). Whether premenopausal, perimenopausal or postmenopausal, the survival of women was better than that of men (premenopausal vs. male, P < 0.001; perimenopausal vs. male, P < 0.001; postmenopausal vs. male, P = 0.035). It was worth noting that in patients with stages I, II, III, and IV, female patients survive longer than male patients (P = 0.049; P = 0.011; P < 0.001; P = 0.044, respectively).
Conclusion
Gender is an independent prognostic factor for patients with GCA. In comparison with men, women have a significantly better outcome. Smoking and drinking may be protective factors for male GCA patients.

Abstract
Globally, the incidence of gastric cancer is lower in women than in men. It is thought that menstrual and reproductive factors may be related to their lower incidence of gastric cancer. This cross-sectional study examined menstrual, reproductive, and other factors in 20,784 postmenopausal women from the 2007-2020 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). A univariate logistic regression analysis was performed, and then a multivariate logistic regression analysis for significant factors in the univariate analysis was conducted. In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, the age at menarche (odds ratio [OR] 1.08, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.00-1.06, p = 0.035) and myocardial infarction (OR 2.43, 95% CI 1.05-5.62, p = 0.026) showed a significant association with increased incidence of gastric cancer. The age at menopause (OR 0.97, 95% CI 0.95-1.00, p = 0.03), the age at the first childbirth (OR 0.93, CI 0.89-0.97, p = 0.007), and the experience of alcohol consumption (OR 0.68, 95% CI 0.5-0.91, p = 0.003) showed a significant association with a decreased incidence of gastric cancer. Late menarche, early menopause, early aged first childbirth, and myocardial infarction are estimated to be risk factors for gastric cancer in postmenopausal Korean women.

Abstract
Objective To analyze factors affecting 1-year overall survival and burden of gastric adenocarcinoma in a single-institution cohort. Methods A prospective cohort study of gastric adenocarcinoma patients from a cancer center in São Paulo, Brazil, was conducted between February 2016 and July 2019. Overall survival was analyzed at 12 months post-diagnosis using the Kaplan–Meier method. A log-rank test was applied to compare curves. Sociodemographic and clinicopathological features were assessed to detect prognostic factors using univariate and multivariable Cox regression analyses to calculate hazard ratio (HR) and its confidence intervals (CIs). Disability-adjusted life years (DALY) constituted the sum of years of life lost (YLL) plus years lived with disability (YLD). YLL represented the sum of years lost before the age of 76.6 years. YLD was calculated as the number of cases multiplied by the duration and burden of the disease. YLL per death was calculated as the mean YLL for each individual. Results Overall survival at 1-year follow-up was 80.8%. The multivariable model adjusted for age and sex identified cerebrovascular disease (HR 8.5, 95% CI 3.3–21.8), stage III/IV (HR 5.7, 95% CI 2.3–13.7), diabetes (HR 3.2, 95% CI 1.5–6.6), and<9 years of education (HR 2.9, 95% CI 1.5–5.8) as prognostic factors. Out of the 214 treated cases, there was 700.72 DALY during the first year, of which 90.55% corresponded to YLL and 9.45% to YLD. The average YLL per death was 15.48 and was higher among women (19.24 YLL per death). Conclusion At a single cancer center, 1-year overall survival probability was approximately 80% in patients with gastric adenocarcinoma. Patients with a higher risk of death had cerebrovascular disease, advanced clinical staging, diabetes, and/or lower educational level. Approximately 700 years of DALY was documented, with women having the highest YLL per death. Because this study was conducted at a single cancer center, the results might not be representative of a general population. To the best of our knowledge, this study was the first to assess gastric adenocarcinoma DALY, YLL, and YLL per death in the first year of follow-up in a hospital cohort in Brazil.

Abstract
Aim: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the associations of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) gene single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and its interaction with current smoking with gastric cancer (GC) risk in the Chinese Han population. Methods: We used logistic regression model to test the association between VEGF gene polymorphism and the risk of GC. The association strength was evaluated by odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) calculated using logistic regression. Generalized multifactor dimensionality reduction (GMDR) was used to analyze the effect of the interaction between VEGF gene and current smoking on GC risk. Results: Logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of GC was significantly higher in rs10434 -G allele carriers than that in AA genotype carriers (AG + GG and AA), and the adjusted OR (95% CI) = 1.64 (1.24–2.08). In addition, we found a significantly higher GC risk in subjects with rs833061-T allele than those with CC allele (CT + TT and CC), adjusted or (95% CI) = 1.43 (1.10–1.87). We also found a statistically significant two- locus model (p = 0.018), including rs10434 and current smoking, indicating a significant interaction between rs10434 and current smoking on the risk of GC. Hierarchical analysis found that current smokers with AG or GG genotype have the highest GC risk, compared to never- smokers with AA genotype, OR (95% CI) = 2.43 (1.64–3.28). Conclusion: We found that rs10434 -G and rs833061-T alleles, gene- environment interaction between rs10434, and current smoking were all related to increased GC risk.

Abstract
PURPOSE Owing to differences in the general characteristics of gastric cancer (GC) according to histological type, the association of GC risk factors, such as diet, may also differ depending on the histological type. We investigated the associations between individual and combined intake of soy products, vegetables, and dairy products and GC mortality by following up cases of death among Korean GC cases and whether these associations differ according to the histological type. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 508 GC cases were enrolled from two hospitals between 2002 and 2006. Their survival or death was prospectively followed up until December 31, 2016, through a review of medical records and telephonic surveys. Finally, 300 GC cases classified as intestinal- or diffuse-type GC cases were included. The median follow-up period was 7.1 years. RESULTS In the fully adjusted model, a high intake of soy products (hazard ratio [HR], 0.43; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.19-0.96) and the combination of soy products and vegetables (HR, 0.34; 95% CI, 0.12-0.96) or soy products and dairy products (HR, 0.37; 95% CI, 0.14-0.98) decreased the mortality from intestinal-type GC. In particular, patients consuming various potentially protective foods (HR, 0.23; 95% CI, 0.06-0.83) showed a highly significant association with a lower mortality from intestinal-type GC. However, no significant association was found with diffuse-type GC. CONCLUSIONS High intake of potentially protective foods, including soy products, vegetables, and dairy products, may help increase survival in intestinal-type GC.

Abstract
This study examines Korean college students’ rates and the severity of various negative consequences resulting from the frequency and quantity of alcohol consumption and the unique factors that are affecting this problem in the Korean context in comparison to other countries. It assesses how much gender, age and other associated respondent characteristics mediate alcohol use and the resulting negative consequences among the population. A stratified representative sample of 4803 valid student respondents attending 82 colleges participated in the alcohol consumption survey, of which 95% reported drinking in past 12 months. Drinking is measured by the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Consumption (AUDIT-C) screening tool. Based on this test, composite scores for each participant were computed and students were grouped into four risk groups: (a) nondrinkers, (b) light drinkers, (c) moderate drinkers and (d) heavy drinkers. Outcome measures include 21 validated items evaluating self-reported alcohol-related negative consequences. Rates of negative consequences are reported for each drinking risk group stratified by gender. Descriptive statistics, stepwise regression, multivariate linear regression and MANOVA tests were used to analyze the data. The study found that female respondents in the sample who consumed alcohol in the past 12 months drank 11.5 percent less than males (AUDIT-C score μ = 6.0 and 6.7, respectively), and there was a greater proportion of females (5.1 percent) who were nondrinkers than males (4.6 percent). Yet, when females drank, they experienced 11.8 percent more negative consequences on average than males (μ = 1.9 and 1.7, respectively). The study attempts to explain this apparent contradiction. The self-reported rates for many individual negative consequences also varied discernibly by gender. The study concludes with suggestions for how alcohol prevention on Korean college campuses would benefit from targeting females and males differently.

Abstract
Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is an inducible enzyme stimulated by various inflammatory factors (IFs). Chronic gastritis is a classic model of “inflammation-cancer transformation” and Helicobacter pylori-related gastric diseases (HPGD) are specific ones of this model. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) syndromes could play a predictive role in gastric histopathological evolution. To search for early warning evidence about “inflammation-cancer transformation,” this study is about to explore interaction of COX-2 with Helicobacter pylori (Hp) in HPGD with different TCM syndromes. All included subjects underwent endoscopy and biopsy. Hp infection was detected by rapid urease test and methylene blue staining. Histopathological characteristics and COX-2 expression in gastric mucosa (GM) were, respectively, observed by hematoxylin-eosin and Elivision™ plus. SPSS 18.0 and Stata 11.0 statistical software packages were used for statistical analysis. Results of immunohistochemical staining in this study showed COX-2 expression in Hp-positive patients was stronger than that in Hp-negative ones. Spearman' analysis indicated that degrees of both Hp infection and COX-2 expression were positively correlated with those of gastric inflammation and inflammatory activity. Compared with the relative normal group, both severe dysplasia group and gastric carcinoma group had more severe Hp infection and COX-2 expression. Compared with the nonsyndrome, syndrome of internal block of static blood (IBSB) had higher scores in semiquantitative analysis of COX-2 protein expression among TCM groups. Moreover, multivariate logistics regression analysis suggested that patients with Hp infection could increase the risk of IBSB. These results indicated that COX-2 interacting with Hp could play an important role in transforming gastric chronic nonresolving inflammation into carcinoma in subjects with HPGD, as well as inducing the formation of IBSB. HPGD together with IBSB could be an early warning evidence for GM with histopathological evolution from benign to malignant.
