Abstract
BACKGROUND The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is witnessing a continuous rise in the incidence of breast cancer (BC). This region is characterized by distinct cultural and lifestyle habits. Despite the importance of diet as a modifiable risk factor for BC, its role in the development of BC within the MENA context has not been extensively studied. This systematic review aims to identify and synthesize existing evidence regarding the effect of different dietary factors on BC risk among women from this region. METHODS We systematically reviewed the scientific literature for observational studies that examined the association between specific dietary factors and the risk of BC in MENA, in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. Our comprehensive search included databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and Scopus, identified a total of 18,085 records, of which 65 met our inclusion criteria and were assessed for quality using the National Institute of Health Quality Assessment Tool. RESULTS The findings of the 65 included studies were categorized into food groups, nutrients, and dietary patterns. Studies in the MENA region have consistently shown that the consumption of fruit and vegetables, fish and seafood, and black tea are associated with a reduced BC risk. In contrast, the intake of milk and white bread is linked to an increased risk. Specific dietary patterns such as the Mediterranean diet, a healthy plant-based diet, dietary antioxidant index, and overall healthy dietary patterns have shown a negative association with BC risk. Conversely, the dietary insulin index and load, dietary glycemic index, dietary inflammatory index, and unhealthy dietary patterns are associated with an increased risk of BC. For the remaining dietary factors, research was too limited or inconsistent to draw conclusions. CONCLUSIONS Our findings highlight the significant role of dietary factors in modulating BC risk among women in the MENA region, an area that faces a notable gap in research on this topic. Further studies are essential to deepen our understanding and develop targeted dietary recommendations for BC prevention in this population.

Abstract
PURPOSE The risk of breast cancer (BC) and related mortality have increased in Middle-East countries during recent decades. The relationship between several nutrient intakes and the risk of BC has been investigated in several studies. However, few studies have estimated the effects of patterns of different nutrient intake on the risk of BC in this region. METHODS A total of 453 patients who were recently diagnosed with breast cancer and 516 healthy women participated in the current case-control study. To evaluate the dietary intakes, we used a validated 168-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) during the last year. Nutrient Patterns (NPs) were extracted through factor analysis (FA) of energy-adjusted twenty-six nutrients. The relationship between nutrient patterns and the risk of breast cancer in pre and post-menopausal women was estimated by multivariable regression. RESULTS Four major nutrient patterns were identified in the current study. The first nutrient pattern was rich in animal protein, retinol, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, cobalamin, and calcium. Higher saturated fatty acids (SFAs), mono-unsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), and trans fatty acids (TFAs), and lower intakes of niacin were observed in nutrient pattern 2. The third nutrient pattern was rich in fiber, potassium, and vitamin C. Nutrient pattern 4, was associated with higher intakes of vegetable protein, alpha-tocopherol, and magnesium. A significant inverse relationship was observed between adherence to nutrient pattern 3 and the risk of BC in all participants [odds ratio (OR) = 0.70, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.50, 0.97, P = 0.03) and pre-menopausal women (OR = 0.59 (0.39-0.89), P = 0.01). CONCLUSION Decreasing odds of breast cancer were observed by adherence to a nutrient pattern high in dietary fiber, vitamin C, and potassium. Future prospective investigations are recommended to confirm these findings.

Abstract
Microalgae have great potential as a future source to meet the increasing global demand for foods. Several microalgae are permitted as safety sources in different countries and regions, and processed as commercial products. However, edible safety, economic feasibility, and acceptable taste are the main challenges for microalgal application in the food industry. Overcome such challenges by developing technology accelerates transition of microalgae into sustainable and nutritious diets. In this review, edible safety of Spirulina, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, Chlorella, Haematococcus pluvialis, Dunaliella salina, Schizochytrium and Nannochloropsis is introduced, and health benefits of microalgae-derived carotenoids, amino acids, and fatty acids are discussed. Technologies of adaptive laboratory evolution, kinetic model, bioreactor design and genetic engineering are proposed to improve the organoleptic traits and economic feasibility of microalgae. Then, current technologies of decoloration and de-fishy are summarized to provide options for processing. Novel technologies of extrusion cooking, delivery systems, and 3D bioprinting are suggested to improve food quality. The production costs, biomass values, and markets of microalgal products are analyzed to reveal the economic feasibility of microalgal production. Finally, challenges and future perspectives are proposed. Social acceptance is the major limitation of microalgae-derived foods, and further efforts are required toward the improvement of processing technology.

Abstract
Simple Summary The effect of vitamin D3 on the development of breast cancer (favorable, ineffective, or even unfavorable) depends on many factors, such as age, menopausal status, or obesity. The immunomodulatory effect of vitamin D may be unfavorable in case of breast cancer progression. The effect of vitamin D on Th17 cells may depend on disease type and patients’ age. Our goal was to summarize the data available and to find indications of vitamin D treatment failure or success. Therefore, in this review, we present data describing the effects of vitamin D3 on Th17 cells, mainly in breast cancer. Abstract Vitamin D3, which is well known to maintain calcium homeostasis, plays an important role in various cellular processes. It regulates the proliferation and differentiation of several normal cells, including immune and neoplastic cells, influences the cell cycle, and stimulates cell maturation and apoptosis through a mechanism dependent on the vitamin D receptor. The involvement of vitamin D3 in breast cancer development has been observed in numerous clinical studies. However, not all studies support the protective effect of vitamin D3 against the development of this condition. Furthermore, animal studies have revealed that calcitriol or its analogs may stimulate tumor growth or metastasis in some breast cancer models. It has been postulated that the effect of vitamin D3 on T helper (Th) 17 lymphocytes is one of the mechanisms promoting metastasis in these murine models. Herein we present a literature review on the existing data according to the interplay between vitamin D, Th17 cell and breast cancer. We also discuss the effects of this vitamin on Th17 lymphocytes in various disease entities known to date, due to the scarcity of scientific data on Th17 lymphocytes and breast cancer. The presented data indicate that the effect of vitamin D3 on breast cancer development depends on many factors, such as age, menopausal status, or obesity. According to that, more extensive clinical trials and studies are needed to assess the importance of vitamin D in breast cancer, especially when no correlations seem to be obvious.

Abstract
Acute inflammation is a key component of the immune system's response to pathogens, toxic agents, or tissue injury, involving the stimulation of defense mechanisms aimed to removing pathogenic factors and restoring tissue homeostasis. However, uncontrolled acute inflammatory response may lead to chronic inflammation, which is involved in the development of many diseases, including cancer. Nowadays, the need to find new potential therapeutic compounds has raised the worldwide scientific interest to study the marine environment. Specifically, microalgae are considered rich sources of bioactive molecules, such as carotenoids, which are natural isoprenoid pigments with important beneficial effects for health due to their biological activities. Carotenoids are essential nutrients for mammals, but they are unable to synthesize them; instead, a dietary intake of these compounds is required. Carotenoids are classified as carotenes (hydrocarbon carotenoids), such as α- and β-carotene, and xanthophylls (oxygenate derivatives) including zeaxanthin, astaxanthin, fucoxanthin, lutein, α- and β-cryptoxanthin, and canthaxanthin. This review summarizes the present up-to-date knowledge of the anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities of microalgal carotenoids both in vitro and in vivo, as well as the latest status of human studies for their potential use in prevention and treatment of inflammatory diseases and cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension (DASH) eating pattern has been recommended as a healthy dietary plan by several international guidelines. However, data on the association between the DASH diet and breast cancer is limited. This study investigated the association between the DASH dietary pattern and risk of breast cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS This is a hospital-based case-control study conducted between 2014 and 2016 in the Cancer Institute of Iran. Patients with histopathologically confirmed breast cancer were recruited. Controls were healthy subjects who were frequency matched to cases by residential place and age (±10 years). A validated 168-item Food Frequency Questionnaire was applied to assess the dietary intake of participants. Physical activity was assessed using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire. The DASH dietary pattern scores were calculated using the method introduced by Fung. Unconditional logistic regression, in which potential confounders were taken into account, was applied to determine the association between adherence to the DASH dietary pattern and odds of breast cancer. RESULTS The study participants comprised 477 patients with breast cancer and 507 healthy controls. In the total population, patients with breast cancer were slightly older (45.9 vs. 43.9 years, P = .02), had slightly higher BMI (21.9 vs. 20.2, P = .01) and were less physically active (20 vs. 27 MET h/wk. P < .01) than controls. In Model A, which was adjusted for age and energy intake, adherence to the DASH dietary pattern substantially reduced breast cancer risk in the total population (OR for comparing extreme tertiles: 0.62; 95% CI 0.44-0.78; Ptrend = 0.004). Even after controlling for more cofounders, greatest adherence to DASH diet was associated with a 34% reduction in risk of breast cancer (OR 0.66; 95% CI 0.46, 0.94; Ptrend = 0.03). In premenopausal women, adherence to the DASH dietary pattern was insignificantly associated with a 32% reduction in breast cancer risk. This risk reduction was 38% in postmenopausal women, which was also not found to be significant CONCLUSION: Adherence to the DASH dietary pattern could be associated with an approximately 30% reduction in risk of breast cancer. However, further studies, in particular studies with prospective design, are required to confirm this claim.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies suggest that fatty acid status influences breast cancer etiology, yet the roles of individual fatty acids in breast cancer risk are unclear, specifically when central adiposity and menopausal status are considered. OBJECTIVES This study examined the associations of fatty acid status with breast cancer risk including location, menopausal status, and waist-to-hip ratio as key variables. METHODS Prediagnostic plasma phospholipid fatty acids were measured in women with breast cancer (n = 393) and age-matched controls (n = 786) from a nested case-control prospective study within Alberta's Tomorrow Project (ATP) and British Columbia Generations Project (BCGP) cohorts. Binary logistic regression models were used to evaluate associations of fatty acids and breast cancer risk with subgroup analysis for menopausal status and waist-to-hip ratio. RESULTS Women from BCGP had a higher n-3 (ɷ-3) fatty acid status compared with the ATP (6.4% ± 0.08% vs. 5.3% ± 0.06%; P < 0.001), so subsequent analysis was blocked by cohort. Overall, fatty acids had inconsistent associations with risk. In the ATP among premenopausal women, total long-chain n-3 fatty acids (ORQ4vsQ1 = 1.78; 95% CI: 0.58, 5.43; P-trend = 0.007, P-interaction = 0.07) were positively associated with breast cancer risk, whereas in BCGP, DHA (ORQ4vsQ1 = 0.66; 95% CI: 0.28, 1.53; P-trend = 0.03, P-interaction = 0.05) and total long-chain n-3 fatty acids (ORQ4vsQ1 = 0.66; 95% CI: 0.28, 1.54; P-trend = 0.03) were associated with decreased cancer risk when the waist-to-hip ratio was <0.85. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that regional variations in fatty acid status influence breast cancer risk, resulting in positive associations of total long-chain n-3 fatty acids in premenopausal ATP women and negative associations of these fatty acids in BCGP women with a waist-to-hip ratio below guidelines. This study highlights the complexity and difficulty in using fatty acid status to predict breast cancer risk in diverse populations without the consideration of other risk factors.

Abstract
It is suspected that diet influences the risk of developing breast cancer. Several β-carotenoids have been inversely associated with breast cancer risk, but association by type of tumor and participant characteristics remain nuclear. The objective of this review of epidemiological studies is to investigate the relationship between β-carotenoids and breast cancer. This review covers the 2014-2020 period and was carried out using the PubMed and EMBASE databases. Only epidemiological studies carried out on β-carotenoids and breast cancer were included. The initial keyword search yielded 1559 results and finally a total of 28 studies were included. The quality of the articles and the risk of bias for each included article were assessed. The selected articles were subsequently classified according to their quality. The evidence from the included studies confirms that there is an association between β-carotenoids and breast cancer risk; the dietary intake of β-carotenoids may be beneficial in reducing the risk of developing breast cancer.

Abstract
Breast cancer (BC) is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and is
considered the leading cause of cancer deaths in women globally. The aim
of this study is to evaluate the relationship between macro- and micronutrient
intake and BC risk among Jordanian women. A case-control design was used
in this study, and BC patients were recruited from the main two hospitals
provide cancer therapy in Jordan. Four hundred women aged 20-65 years
of age were enrolled in the study. For the cases, 200 recently diagnosed
BC women were selected from the two hospitals and matched in age and
marital status to 200 BC-free women. Dietary data were collected through
face-to-face interview using a validated food frequency questionnaire
between October 2016 and September 2017. To calculate odds ratio
(OR), logistic regression was used; while for p-trend the linear regression
was performed. The study results demonstrated that increasing the intake
of total energy and percentage of fat was significantly and positively
associated with BC (p-= 0.001). The risk of BC increased significantly and
positively as carbohydrate, sugar, fat, saturated fat and polyunsaturated
and monounsaturated fatty acids intake increased. A significant trend in
BC risk was found for cholesterol (p-= 0.005). The ORs for higher intakes
of vitamins E, B1, B2, and B3, folate and phosphorus showed a significant
association with the risk of BC (p-trend =0.001). A significant inverse effect
was detected between iron intake and BC risk (p-=0.001). The study findings
resulted in insight of the associations between the total energy intake and
some macro/micronutrients intake can be an increasing risk of BC.

Abstract
Breast cancer (BC) is the most frequently diagnosed type of cancer and the leading cause
of cancer deaths in women worldwide. A number of established risk factors for BC have been identified
in many previous studies which included age, reproductive history, lactation, hormone levels or
use, genetic factors, breast density and various diet and lifestyle factors. Several previous studies
highlighted the independent effect of dietary patterns, lifestyle factors, macro- and micronutrients intake,
physical activity, tobacco smoking, and weight gain on the risk BC. Although a number of risk
factors have been identified for BC, however, some are difficult to modify such as genetic factors,
while dietary pattern, physical activity, nutrient intake and smoking are modifiable risk factors which
could be targeted to reduce the risk of this devastating disease. Even though there is a quick advancement
in BC cancer therapy, but still, the survival rate is not increasing. Therefore, preventing
cancer development is more important than treating or inhibiting its progression and such prevention
can reduce the suffering and pain of patients and their families.

Abstract
Chemoresistance is a major cause of cancer progression and the mortality of cancer patients. Developing a safe strategy for enhancing chemosensitivity is a challenge for biomedical science. Recent studies have suggested that vitamin D supplementation may decrease the risk of many cancers. However, the role of vitamin D in chemotherapy remains unknown. We found that vitamin D sensitised oral cancer cells to cisplatin and partially reversed cisplatin resistance. Using RNA-seq, we discovered that lipocalin 2 (LCN2) is an important mediator. Cisplatin enhanced the expression of LCN2 by decreasing methylation at the promoter, whereas vitamin D enhanced methylation and thereby inhibited the expression of LCN2. Overexpression of LCN2 increased cell survival and cisplatin resistance both in vitro and in vivo. High LCN2 expression was positively associated with differentiation, lymph node metastasis, and T staging and predicted a poor prognosis in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients. LCN2 was also associated with post-chemotherapy recurrence. Moreover, we found that LCN2 promoted the activation of NF-κB by binding to ribosomal protein S3 (RPS3) and enhanced the interaction between RPS3 and p65. Our study reveals that vitamin D can enhance cisplatin chemotherapy and suggests that vitamin D should be supplied during chemotherapy; however, more follow-up clinical studies are needed.
