Abstract
The mycobiome is an integral component of every living organism. Among other fungi associated with plants, endophytes are an interesting and favorable group of microorganisms, but information regarding them is still largely unknown. Wheat is the most economically significant and essential crop for global food security, which is exposed to a range of abiotic and biotic stresses. Profiling plants' mycobiomes can help in sustainable, chemical-reducing wheat production. The main objective of this work is to understand the structure of endogenous fungal communities in winter and spring wheat cultivars growing under different growth conditions. Further, the study attempted to investigate the effect of host genotype, host organs and plant growth conditions on the composition and distribution of fungi in wheat plant tissues. Comprehensive, high throughput analyzes of the diversity and community structure of the wheat mycobiome were performed, complemented by the simultaneous isolation of endophytic fungi, resulting in candidate strains for future research. The findings of the study revealed that the type of plant organs and growth conditions influence the wheat mycobiome. It was also assessed that fungi representing the genera Cladosporium, Penicillium, and Sarocladium form the core mycobiome of Polish spring and winter wheat cultivars. The coexistence of both symbiotic and pathogenic species in the internal tissues of wheat was also observed. Those commonly considered beneficial for plants can be used in further research as a valuable source of potential biological control factors and/or biostimulators of wheat plant growth.

Abstract
Postharvest diseases of fruits and vegetables cause significant economic losses to producers and marketing firms. Many of these diseases are caused by necrotrophic fungal pathogens that require wounded or injured tissues to establish an infection. Biocontrol of postharvest diseases is an evolving science that has moved from the traditional paradigm of one organism controlling another organism to viewing biocontrol as a system involving the biocontrol agent, the pathogen, the host, the physical environment, and most recently the resident microflora. Thus, the paradigm has shifted from one of simplicity to complexity. The present review provides an overview of how the field of postharvest biocontrol has evolved over the past 40 years, a brief review of the biology of necrotrophic pathogens, the discovery of BCAs, their commercialization, and mechanisms of action. Most importantly, current research on the use of marker-assisted-selection, the fruit microbiome and its relationship to the pathobiome, and the use of double-stranded RNA as a biocontrol strategy is discussed. These latter subjects represent evolving trends in postharvest biocontrol research and suggestions for future research are presented.

Abstract
Degradation of natural ecosystems increases the risk of infections in wildlife due to microbiota dysbiosis. However, little is known about its influence on the development of fungal communities in predators and facultative avian scavengers. We evaluated the incidence of oral disease in wild nestling black kites (Milvus migrans) under contrasting environmental degradation conditions, and explored their oral fungal patterns using molecular methods and multivariate analysis. Oral lesions were found in 36.8% of the 38 nestlings examined in an anthropogenically altered habitat (southeastern Madrid, Spain), but in none of the 105 nestlings examined in a well-conserved natural area (Doñana National Park, Spain). In a subsample of 48 black kites, the composition of the oral fungal community differed among symptomatic nestlings from Madrid (SM) and asymptomatic nestlings from Madrid (AM) and Doñana (AD). Opportunistic fungal pathogens (e.g., Fusarium incarnatum-equiseti species complex, Mucor spp., Rhizopus oryzae) were more prevalent in SM and AM than in AD. Hierarchical clustering and principal component analyses revealed that fungal patterns were distinct between both study areas, and that anthropogenic and natural environmental factors had a greater impact on them than oral disease. Fungal signatures associated with anthropogenic and natural stresses harbored some taxa that could be used to flag oral infection (F. incarnatum-equiseti species complex and Alternaria), indicate environmental degradation (Alternaria) or provide protective benefits in degraded environments (Trichoderma, Epicoccum nigrum and Sordaria). Co-occurrence associations between potentially beneficial and pathogenic fungi were typical of AM and AD, hinting at a possible role in host health. This study shows that early-life exposure to highly degraded environments induces a shift towards a higher prevalence of pathogenic species in the oral cavity of black kites, favoring oral disease. Furthermore, our findings suggest potential ecological applications of the monitoring of oral mycobiome as a bioindication of oral disease and environmental degradation.

Abstract
The Bacillus amyloliquefaciens group, composed of B. amyloliquefaciens, B. velezensis, B. nakamurai, and B. siamensis, has recently emerged as an interesting source of biocontrol agents for the management of pathogenic fungi. In this review, all the reports regarding the ability of these species to control postharvest fungal diseases have been covered for the first time. B. amyloliquefaciens species showed various antifungal mechanisms, including production of antifungal lipopeptides and volatile organic compounds, competition for nutrients, and induction of disease resistance. Most reports discussed their use for the control of fruit diseases. Several strains were studied in combination with additives, improving their inhibitory efficacies. In addition, a few strains have been commercialized. Overall, studies showed that B. amyloliquefaciens species are a suitable environmentally friendly alternative for the control of postharvest diseases. However, there are still crucial knowledge gaps to improve their efficacy and host range.

Abstract
Trichothecene mycotoxins are sesquiterpenoid compounds primarily produced by fungi in taxonomical genera such as Fusarium, Myrothecium, Stachybotrys, Trichothecium, and others, under specific climatic conditions on a worldwide basis. Fusarium mold is a major plant pathogen and produces a number of trichothecene mycotoxins including deoxynivalenol (or vomitoxin), nivalenol, diacetoxyscirpenol, and T-2 toxin, HT-2 toxin. Monogastrics are sensitive to vomitoxin, while poultry and ruminants appear to be less sensitive to some trichothecenes through microbial metabolism of trichothecenes in the gastrointestinal tract. Trichothecene mycotoxins occur worldwide however both total concentrations and the particular mix of toxins present vary with environmental conditions. Proper agricultural practices such as avoiding late harvests, removing overwintered stubble from fields, and avoiding a corn/wheat rotation that favors Fusarium growth in residue can reduce trichothecene contamination of grains. Due to the vague nature of toxic effects attributed to low concentrations of trichothecenes, a solid link between low level exposure and a specific trichothecene is difficult to establish. Multiple factors, such as nutrition, management, and environmental conditions impact animal health and need to be evaluated with the knowledge of the mycotoxin and concentrations known to cause adverse health effects. Future research evaluating the impact of low-level exposure on livestock may clarify the potential impact on immunity. Trichothecenes are rapidly excreted from animals, and residues in edible tissues, milk, or eggs are likely negligible. In chronic exposures to trichothecenes, once the contaminated feed is removed and exposure stopped, animals generally have an excellent prognosis for recovery. This review shows the occurrence of trichothecenes in food and feed in 2011-2020 and their toxic effects and provides a summary of the discussions on the potential public health concerns specifically related to trichothecenes residues in foods associated with the exposure of farm animals to mycotoxin-contaminated feeds and impact to human health. Moreover, the article discusses the methods of their detection.

Abstract
To isolate Bacillus velezensis mutants with improved antifungal activity for use in the biological control of phytopathogenic fungi, wild-type Bacillus velezensis KRF-001 producing iturin, surfactin, and fengycin was irradiated by ultraviolet (UV) rays. The in vitro and in vivo antifungal activities of UV mutants and characterization of the cyclic lipopeptides produced by a selected mutant were examined. A mutant strain yielding high levels of iturin showed over 2-fold higher antifungal activity than the wild-type against Fusarium oxysporum. A potent suppressive effect of the mutant was also observed on spore germination of Botrytis cinerea, the causative agent of cucumber gray mold, at different butanol extract concentrations. Further analysis of the mutant by real-time PCR and high-performance liquid chromatography revealed increased expression of iturin and surfactin biosynthesis genes as well as enhanced production of iturin and surfactin metabolites. However, the amounts of fengycin obtained from the mutant strain BSM54 were significantly lesser than those of iturin and surfactin. Particularly, iturin A production by the mutant was 3.5-fold higher than that of the wild-type, suggesting that the higher antifungal activity of the mutant against F. oxysporum resulted from the increased expression of biosynthesis genes associated with iturin production. The commercial greenhouse experiment using soil naturally infested with Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (sclerotinia rot) and F. oxysporum (fusarium wilt) showed that the mutant strain reduced sclerotinia rot and fusarium wilt diseases (P = 0.05) more effectively than the wild-type and commercially available product Cillus® in Korea. These results suggest that the mutant with high iturin yield is a potential candidate for the development of a biological control agent in agriculture.

Abstract
Penicillium crustosum Thom. is a fungus commonly found on cheese and nuts, but is also a postharvest pathogen that causes blue mold disease of pome and stone fruits including plum and nectarine (Louw and Korsten 2016; Restuccia et al. 2006). The fungus produces mycotoxins (penitrem A, roquefortine C, terrestric acid, and cyclopenol) which are of concern for human health (Frisvad and Samson 2004). In Serbia, P. crustosum has been previously described on apple fruit (Vico et al. 2014). On nectarine fruit (Prunus persica var. nucipersica), after 6 weeks of cold storage, symptoms of blue mold developed in a fruit market in Belgrade, Serbia. The fruit was collected and isolations performed in November 2017. Decayed areas on infected fruit were soft, light to medium brown with blue-green sporulation on the fruit surface. Two isolates were obtained (N2AS and N2BS) and cultured on Czapek yeast autolysate agar (CYA), malt extract agar (MEA), yeast extract sucrose agar (YES) and potato dextrose agar (PDA) at 25°C for 7 days. Isolates were identified as P. crustosum based on morphological features (Frisvad and Samson 2004; Pitt and Hocking 2009). On all media, mycelia were white and colonies turned blue-green with abundant sporulation. Colonies of both isolates were radially sulcate on MEA and YES, and plane with a granular texture on CYA and PDA, and were yellow to orange on the reverse side on YES. Mean colony diameter on PDA was 29.2 ± 1.2 mm for N2AS, and 31.3 ± 1.4 mm for N2BS; on CYA 30.8 ± 1.2 mm for N2AS and 30.9 ± 1.1 mm for N2BS; on YES 40.7 ± 3.6 mm for N2AS and 43.6 ± 1.4 mm for N2BS; and on MEA 33.4 ± 1.2 mm for N2AS and 34 ± 2.5 mm for N2BS. Crusts of conidial masses formed on MEA and PDA after 10 days. Conidiophores of both isolates were terverticillate, stipes were septate with rough walls, and conidia, borne in columns, were smooth and spherical to subglobose. Conidial diameter for N2AS was 2.32 to 3.95 (average 3.13) µm and for N2BS was 2.34 to 3.98 (average 3.27) µm (n=50). Isolates formed a yellow ring, using Ehrlich's reagent, indicating lack of cyclopiazonic acid, but production of other alkaloids. Morphological identification was confirmed by isolating genomic DNA, PCR amplification of the partial β-tubulin gene using Bt2a/Bt2b (Glass and Donaldson 1995) and sequencing. BLAST analysis revealed that N2AS sequence (MT799805) was 99% similar and N2BS (MT799806) was identical to sequences AY674351 (strain CBS 101025) and KJ775121 (strain DTO_244H8) of P. crustosum in GenBank. Sequences (2X consensus) of the two isolates differed in one nucleotide showing the existence of single-nucleotide polymorphism among P. crustosum isolates. Pathogenicity was tested on nectarine, peach and apple fruit (four fruit per isolate and the control). Fruit were washed, surface-sanitized with 70% ethanol, and wound (10x4 mm) inoculated on two sides with 40 μl of a 105/ml conidial suspension in sterile distilled water containing 0.1% Tween 20 (TSDW). Control fruit was inoculated with TSDW. Inoculated and control fruit were stored at 25°C for 7 days. Inoculated fruit developed light brown decay with cracks in the epidermis that spread from the inoculation point on nectarines and peaches. Blue-green sporulation was present on all inoculated fruit. Control fruit remained symptomless. The fungus was re-isolated and was morphologically identical to the original isolates, thus completing Koch's postulates. This is the first report of P. crustosum causing postharvest blue mold decay on nectarine fruit in Serbia. Results show that P. crustosum is not only present as a postharvest pathogen of apple fruit, but of nectarine as well and may pose a threat in storage of both pome and stone fruits in Serbia. Abstract
Very few studies have investigated the host-pathogen interaction of Penicillium spp. on nectarine. Penicillium digitatum was identified as pathogenic and highly aggressive on nectarine. A strong association was made with host age/ripeness. This points to a new mechanism or life strategy used by P. digitatum to infect and colonize previously thought nonhosts. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of postharvest storage of nectarine on the infection and colonization of P. digitatum and Penicillium expansum at molecular and physical (firmness and pH) levels. The impact of environmental conditions (cold storage) and pathogen pressure (inoculum load) was also investigated. Although disease incidence was much lower, lesions caused by P. digitatum were similar in size to those caused by P. expansum on freshly harvested nectarine. Disease incidence and lesion diameter significantly increased (larger than P. expansum) on longer stored fruit. Cold storage had the largest effect on P. digitatum. Inoculum load had a meaningful effect on both Penicillium spp. Storage significantly affected pH modulation and gene expression. The pathogens not only decreased but also, increased and maintained (similar to initial pH of the host) pH of infected tissue. The polygalacturonase (PG) gene and creA were upregulated by P. digitatum on 7-day postharvest fruit (other genes were unaffected). It partly explains the larger lesions on older or riper fruit. A different expression profile was observed from P. expansum: strong downregulation in PG and slight upregulation in pacC. Very different life strategies were used by the two Penicillium spp. when infecting nectarine. Unlike what is known on citrus, P. digitatum showed an opportunistic lifestyle that takes advantage of specific host and environmental conditions. It is largely still unclear (gene expression) what specifically triggers the increase in disease incidence (infection) and lesion diameter (colonization) of P. digitatum on older or riper fruit. The differences between in vivo and in vitro studies make it difficult to directly correlate results. Additional research is still needed to differentiate and understand the infection and colonization of these pathogens on the same host.

Abstract
Grape foods with probiotics are sources of beneficial bacteria for the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and also have a high antioxidant capacity. The addition of probiotics to dairy food is a traditional process; therefore, probiotic non-dairy products might contribute to a daily antioxidant diet to improve consumer life quality and health. This research was undertaken to develop a grape marmalade with a probiotic base to investigate the potential antioxidant activity in the probiotic non-dairy product. Thus, changes in active culture numbers, pH level, glucose concentration, and antioxidant properties were evaluated. Most of the isolates demonstrated higher growth in the grape marmalade than the synthetic grape marmalade, which was greater than 7 log colony-forming units (CFU)/g within 90 days of storage at 4 °C. In addition, most of the wild isolates grew beyond the critical count of 106 CFU/g in sampling between 60 and 90 days of storage. Moreover, probiotic grape marmalade with probiotics showed a strong antioxidant capacity that failed to differ significantly with the synthetic medium. The study confirmed Lactobacillus paraplantarum AB362736.1, Lactobacillus plantarum MF369875.1, Weissella paramesenteroides CP023501.1, and Enterococcus faecalis HQ802261.1 were ideal bacteria for the probiotic process of grape marmalade.

Abstract
In the present study, Melia azedarach wood samples that were treated with the methanolic extract of Musa paradisiaca L. peels were evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal activities against Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Dickeya solani, Erwinia amylovora, Pseudomonas cichorii, Serratia pylmuthica, Fusarium culmorum, and Rhizoctonia solani. The strongest antibacterial activity was only found against A. tumefaciens (inhibition zone 90 mm), while the other bacterial strains showed resistance to wood that was treated with the extract. Potential antifungal activity against F. culmorum and R. solani was observed; the mycelial growth inhibition percentages reached 68.88% and 94.07%, respectively, in wood samples that were treated with the 3% methanolic extract of M. paradisiaca peel. HPLC analysis demonstrated the presence of seven phenolic compounds and three flavonoid compounds, as their peaks were matched with the standard compounds in a HPLC analysis. The major constituents of phenolic and flavonoid compounds in mg/100 g dry extract (DE) were ellagic acid (16.19), gallic acid (7.73), rutin (973.08), myricetin (11.52), and naringenin (8.47). The results demonstrated the potential effects of banana peel extract as a natural compound that can protect wood from molds while in use.

Abstract
In this study, for the environmental development, the antifungal, antibacterial, and antioxidant activities of a water extract of flowers from Acacia saligna (Labill.) H. L. Wendl. were evaluated. The extract concentrations were prepared by dissolving them in 10% DMSO. Wood samples of Melia azedarach were treated with water extract, and the antifungal activity was examined at concentrations of 0%, 1%, 2%, and 3% against three mold fungi; Fusarium culmorum MH352452, Rhizoctonia solani MH352450, and Penicillium chrysogenum MH352451 that cause root rot, cankers, and green fruit rot, respectively, isolated from infected Citrus sinensis L. Antibacterial evaluation of the extract was assayed against four phytopathogenic bacteria, including Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Enterobacter cloacae, Erwinia amylovora, and Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum, using the micro-dilution method to determine the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). Further, the antioxidant capacity of the water extract was measured via 2,2'-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH). Phenolic and flavonoid compounds in the water extract were analyzed using HPLC: benzoic acid, caffeine, and o-coumaric acid were the most abundant phenolic compounds; while the flavonoid compounds naringenin, quercetin, and kaempferol were identified compared with the standard flavonoid compounds. The antioxidant activity of the water extract in terms of IC50 was considered weak (463.71 μg/mL) compared to the standard used, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) (6.26 μg/mL). The MIC values were 200, 300, 300, and 100 µg/mL against the growth of A. tumefaciens, E. cloacae, E. amylovora, and P. carotovorum subsp. carotovorum, respectively, which were lower than the positive control used (Tobramycin 10 μg/disc). By increasing the extract concentration, the percentage inhibition of fungal mycelial was significantly increased compared to the control treatment, especially against P. chrysogenum, suggesting that the use of A. saligna flower extract as an environmentally friendly wood bio-preservative inhibited the growth of molds that cause discoloration of wood and wood products.

Abstract
This study investigated the potential use of two edible coatings, chitosan (CH) and locust bean gum (LBG), which incorporated chemically characterized water pomegranate peel extract (WPPE) or methanol pomegranate peel extract (MPPE) and the biocontrol agent (BCA) Wickerhamomyces anomalus, to control the growth of Penicillium digitatum and to reduce the postharvest decay of oranges. CH and LBG including pomegranate peel extracts (PPEs) at different concentrations were tested in vitro against P. digitatum to determine their antifungal efficacy; at the same time, the tolerance of viable cells of W. anomalus to increasing concentrations of WPPE and MPPE extracts was assessed. The potential application of selected bioactive coatings was evaluated in vivo on oranges, which had been artificially inoculated with P. digitatum, causal agent of green mold decay. CH incorporating MPPE or WPPE at all concentrations was able to inhibit in vitro P. digitatum, while LBG was active only at the highest MPPE or WPPE concentrations. W. anomalus BS91 was slightly inhibited only by MPPE-modified coatings, while no inhibition was observed by WPPE, which was therefore selected for the in vivo trials on oranges artificially inoculated with P. digitatum. The experimental results proved that the addition of 0.361 g dry WPPE/mL, both to CH and LBG coatings, significantly reduced disease incidence (DI) by 49 and 28% respectively, with respect to the relative controls. Besides the combination CH or LBG + WPPE, the addition of W. anomalus cells to coatings strengthened the antifungal effect with respect to the relative controls, as demonstrated by the significant reduction of DI (up to 95 and 75% respectively). The findings of the study contribute to the valorization of a value-added industrial byproduct and provide a significant advancement in the development of new food protectant formulations, which benefit from the synergistic effect between biocontrol agents and natural bioactive compounds.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While recent advances in next generation sequencing technologies have enabled researchers to readily identify countless microbial species in soil, rhizosphere, and phyllosphere microbiomes, the biological functions of the majority of these species are unknown. Functional studies are therefore urgently needed in order to characterize the plethora of microorganisms that are being identified and to point out species that may be used for biotechnology or plant protection. Here, we used a dual culture assay and growth analyses to characterise yeasts (40 different isolates) and their antagonistic effect on 16 filamentous fungi; comprising plant pathogens, antagonists, and saprophytes. RESULTS Overall, this competition screen of 640 pairwise combinations revealed a broad range of outcomes, ranging from small stimulatory effects of some yeasts up to a growth inhibition of more than 80% by individual species. On average, yeasts isolated from soil suppressed filamentous fungi more strongly than phyllosphere yeasts and the antagonistic activity was a species-/isolate-specific property and not dependent on the filamentous fungus a yeast was interacting with. The isolates with the strongest antagonistic activity were Metschnikowia pulcherrima, Hanseniaspora sp., Cyberlindnera sargentensis, Aureobasidium pullulans, Candida subhashii, and Pichia kluyveri. Among these, the soil yeasts (C. sargentensis, A. pullulans, C. subhashii) assimilated and/or oxidized more di-, tri- and tetrasaccharides and organic acids than yeasts from the phyllosphere. Only the two yeasts C. subhashii and M. pulcherrima were able to grow with N-acetyl-glucosamine as carbon source. CONCLUSIONS The competition assays and physiological experiments described here identified known antagonists that have been implicated in the biological control of plant pathogenic fungi in the past, but also little characterised species such as C. subhashii. Overall, soil yeasts were more antagonistic and metabolically versatile than yeasts from the phyllosphere. Noteworthy was the strong antagonistic activity of the soil yeast C. subhashii, which had so far only been described from a clinical sample and not been studied with respect to biocontrol. Based on binary competition assays and growth analyses (e.g., on different carbon sources, growth in root exudates), C. subhashii was identified as a competitive and antagonistic soil yeast with potential as a novel biocontrol agent against plant pathogenic fungi.

Abstract
The antagonistic effects of Debaryomyces hansenii KI2a, D. hansenii MI1a and Wickerhamomyces anomalus BS91 were tested against Monilinia fructigena and Monilinia fructicola in in vitro and in vivo trials. All yeast strains demonstrated antifungal activity at different levels depending on species, strain and pathogen. D hansenii KI2a and W. anomalus BS91 showed the highest biocontrol activity in vitro; the production of hydrolytic enzymes, killer toxins and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were hypothesized as their main mechanisms of action against pathogens. D hansenii KI2a and W. anomalus BS91 significantly reduced brown rot incidence and severity on peach and plum fruits artificially inoculated with M. fructigena and M. fructicola, especially when applied 24 h before pathogen inoculation. On the opposite, D. hansenii MI1a exhibited weak antagonistic activity towards M. fructigena on peach and plum fruits and was ineffective against M. fructicola. The noticeable ability of W. anomalus BS91 to control brown rot could be also correlated with its high capacity to colonize the wound tissue and to increase its population density. Accordingly, the antagonistic strains of D. hansenii and W. anomalus could be proposed as active ingredients for the development of biofungicides against Monilinia species that are responsible for considerable economic losses in stone fruit crops.

Abstract
Strains belonging to Wickerhamomyces anomalus, Metschnikowia pulcherrima and Aureobasidium pullulans species were tested in vitro as biocontrol agents (BCAs) against the post-harvest pathogenic molds Penicillium digitatum and Penicillium italicum. Moreover, studies aimed at screening the antifungal activity of selected yeast strains in vivo conditions against P. digitatum and P. italicum, and investigated the efficacy of a polysaccharidic matrix, locust bean gum (LBG), enriched with the tested BCAs, in controlling postharvest decays in artificially inoculated mandarins. The population dynamics of BCAs on wounds and the magnitude of peroxidase (POD) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in fruit tissues were also investigated after treatments of mandarins with antagonistic yeasts. W. anomalus BS91, M. pulcherrima MPR3 and A. pullulans PI1 provided excellent control of postharvest decays caused by P. digitatum and P. italicum on mandarins, both when the yeasts were used alone and in combination with LBG, which enhanced the yeast cell viability over time. Finally, the increased activity of POD and lower decrease in SOD activity in response to BCAs application in mandarin fruits confirmed their involvement in the biocontrol mechanism.

Abstract
This study assessed the ability of two bio-based films, obtained from sodium alginate (NaAlg) and locust bean gum (LBG), to protect the viability of Wickerhamomyces anomalus cells and control the growth of Penicillium digitatum. The effect of microbial cell incorporation on physical properties of the developed films was evaluated in terms of barrier, mechanical and optical properties. Furthermore, the application of these two matrices as bioactive coatings was investigated in order to evaluate their efficacy in preserving the postharvest quality of 'Valencia' oranges and inhibiting the growth of P. digitatum on artificially inoculated fruits. Results showed that NaAlg and LBG films were able to maintain more than 85% of the initial W. anomalus yeast population and that the developed films incorporating the killer yeast completely inhibited the growth of P. digitatum in synthetic medium. Likewise, NaAlg and LBG coatings enriched with W. anomalus yeast were effective at reducing weight loss and maintaining firmness of 'Valencia' oranges during storage, and reduced green mold in inoculated fruits by more than 73% after 13 days.

Abstract
Oral microbiota contribute to health and disease, and their disruption may influence the course of oral diseases. Here, we used pyrosequencing to characterize the oral bacteriome and mycobiome of 12 HIV-infected patients and matched 12 uninfected controls. The number of bacterial and fungal genera in individuals ranged between 8-14 and 1-9, among uninfected and HIV-infected participants, respectively. The core oral bacteriome (COB) comprised 14 genera, of which 13 were common between the two groups. In contrast, the core oral mycobiome (COM) differed between HIV-infected and uninfected individuals, with Candida being the predominant fungus in both groups. Among Candida species, C. albicans was the most common (58% in uninfected and 83% in HIV-infected participants). Furthermore, 15 and 12 bacteria-fungi pairs were correlated significantly within uninfected and HIV-infected groups, respectively. Increase in Candida colonization was associated with a concomitant decrease in the abundance of Pichia, suggesting antagonism. We found that Pichia spent medium (PSM) inhibited growth of Candida, Aspergillus and Fusarium. Moreover, Pichia cells and PSM inhibited Candida biofilms (P = .002 and .02, respectively, compared to untreated controls). The mechanism by which Pichia inhibited Candida involved nutrient limitation, and modulation of growth and virulence factors. Finally, in an experimental murine model of oral candidiasis, we demonstrated that mice treated with PSM exhibited significantly lower infection score (P = .011) and fungal burden (P = .04) compared to untreated mice. Moreover, tongues of PSM-treated mice had few hyphae and intact epithelium, while vehicle- and nystatin-treated mice exhibited extensive fungal invasion of tissue with epithelial disruption. These results showed that PSM was efficacious against oral candidiasis in vitro and in vivo. The inhibitory activity of PSM was associated with secretory protein/s. Our findings provide the first evidence of interaction among members of the oral mycobiota, and identifies a potential novel antifungal.

Abstract
Killer Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Wickerhamomyces anomalus yeast strains were tested as biocontrol agents against Penicillium digitatum, one the most important causes of postharvest decay in orange fruits. W. anomalus, grown on acidified medium, demonstrated micocinogenic activity against P. digitatum, as indicated by large inhibition halos and hyphal damage resulting from β-glucanase activity. Oranges that had been deliberately inoculated with pathogens were protected from decay by W. anomalus. Inoculation of oranges with W. anomalus strains BS 91 and BS 92 reduced disease severity to 1 and 4%, respectively, for up to 10 days in storage.

Abstract
The effect of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) on pathogenic fungi was evaluated and the metabolites involved in the antifungal effect were characterized. Penicillium digitatum (INTA 1 to INTA 7) and Geotrichum citri-aurantii (INTA 8) isolated from decayed lemon from commercial packinghouses were treated with imazalil and guazatine to obtain strains resistant to these fungicides. The most resistant strains (4 fungal strains) were selected for evaluating the antifungal activity of 33 LAB strains, among which only 8 strains gave positive results. The antifungal activity of these LAB strains was related to the production of lactic acid, acetic acid, and phenyllactic acid (PLA). A central composite design and the response surface methodology were used to evaluate the inhibitory effect of the organic acids produced by the LAB cultures. The antifungal activity of lactic acid was directly related to its concentration; however, acetic acid and PLA showed a peak of activity at 52.5 and 0.8 mM, respectively, with inhibition rates similar to those obtained with Serenade((R)) (3.0 ppm) imazalil (50 ppm) and guazatine (50 ppm). Beyond the peak of activity, a reduction in effectiveness of both acetic acid and PLA was observed. Comparing the inhibition rate of the organic acids, PLA was about 66- and 600-fold more effective than acetic acid and lactic acid, respectively. This study presents evidences on the antifungal effect of selected LAB strains and their end products. Studies are currently being undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness in preventing postharvest diseases on citrus fruits.

Abstract
A biofilm-forming strain of Pichia fermentans proved to be most effective in controlling brown rot on apple fruit when coinoculated into artificial wounds with a phytopathogenic isolate of Monilinia fructicola. Culture filtrates and autoclaved cells had no significant influence on the disease. When sprayed onto the apple fruit surface, this yeast formed a thin biofilm but failed to colonize the underlying tissues. When inoculated into wounds artificially inflicted to peach fruit or when sprayed onto the surface of peach fruit, the same strain showed an unexpected pathogenic behaviour, causing rapid decay of fruit tissues even in the absence of M. fructicola. Both optical and scanning electron microscopy were used to evaluate the pattern of fruit tissue colonization by P. fermentans. While on apple surface and within the apple wound the antagonist retained its yeast-like shape, colonization of peach fruit tissue was always characterized by a transition from budding growth to pseudohyphal growth. These results suggest that pseudohyphal growth plays a major role in governing the potential pathogenicity of P. fermentans, further emphasizing the importance of a thorough risk assessment for the safe use of any novel biocontrol agent.
