Foodborne Disease Outbreaks Associated with Organic Foods in the United States

Effect of plant-derived antimicrobials, eugenol, carvacrol, and β-resorcylic acid against Salmonella on organic chicken wings and carcasses

Organic poultry constitutes a sizeable segment of the American organic commodities market. However, processors have limited strategies that are safe, effective, and approved for improving the microbiological safety of products. In this study, the efficacy of 3 plant-derived antimicrobials (PDAs), eugenol (EG), carvacrol (CR), and β-resorcylic acid (BR) was evaluated against Salmonella on organic chicken wings and carcasses. Wings inoculated with Salmonella (6 log10 CFU/wing) were treated with or without the treatments (BR [0.5%, 1% w/v], EG [0.5%, 1% v/v], CR [0.5%, 1% v/v], chlorine [CL; 200 ppm v/v], or peracetic acid [PA; 200 ppm v/v]) applied for 2 min at 54°C (scalding study) or 30 min at 4°C (chilling study). Homogenates and treatment water were evaluated for surviving Salmonella. Six wings or carcasses per treatment were analyzed in each study. All treatments, except CL and 0.5% BR in the scalding study, yielded significant reductions of Salmonella on wings compared to the positive control (PC-Salmonella inoculated samples not treated with antimicrobials). To follow, carcasses inoculated with Salmonella (higher inoculum [106 CFU/carcass] or lower inoculum [104 CFU/carcass]) and immersed in antimicrobials (CR 1% [v/v] and industry controls [CL {200 ppm}, or PA [200 ppm]) for 30 min at 4°C were stored until analysis. For the higher inoculum study, 1% CR resulted in a 3.9 log10 CFU/g reduction of Salmonella on the carcass on d 0 compared to PC (P < 0.05); however, CL yielded no reduction. On d 3, CR and PA resulted in 0.9 and 1.2 log10 CFU/g reduction of Salmonella, respectively (P < 0.05). For the lower inoculum study, consistent Salmonella reductions were obtained with CR and PA (1.4-2.1 log10 CFU/g) on d 0 and 7. High reductions of Salmonella in processing water were obtained in all studies. CR effectively controls Salmonella on wings and carcasses and in processing water immediately after application. Follow-up studies on the organoleptic characteristics of PDA-treated chicken carcasses are necessary.

Assessment of the prevalence, serotype, and antibiotic resistance pattern of Salmonella enterica in integrated farming systems in the Maryland-DC area

Implementation of organic/pasture farming practices has been increasing in the USA regardless of official certification. These practices have created an increasingly growing demand for marketing safe products which are produced through these systems. Products from these farming systems have been reported to be at greater risk of transmitting foodborne pathogens because of current trends in their practices. Salmonella enterica (SE) is a ubiquitous foodborne pathogen that remains a public health issue given its prevalence in various food products, but also in the environment and as part of the microbial flora of many domestic animals. Monitoring antibiotic resistance and identifying potential sources contamination are increasingly important given the growing trend of organic/pasture markets. This study aimed to quantify prevalence of SE at the pre- and post-harvest levels of various integrated farms and sites in Maryland-Washington D.C. area, as well as identify the most prevalent serovars and antibiotic resistance patterns. Samples from various elements within the farm environment were collected and screened for SE through culture and molecular techniques, which served to identify and serotype SE, using species and serovar-specific primers, while antibiotic resistance was evaluated using an antibiogram assay. Results showed a prevalence of 7.80% of SE pre-harvest and 1.91% post-harvest. These results also showed the main sources of contamination to be soil (2.17%), grass (1.28%), feces (1.42%) and unprocessed produce (1.48%). The most commonly identified serovar was Typhimurium (11.32%) at the pre-harvest level, while the only identified serovar from post-harvest samples was Montevideo (4.35%). With respect to antibiotic resistance, out of the 13 clinically relevant antibiotics tested, gentamycin and kanamycin were the most effective, demonstrating 78.93 and 76.40% of isolates, respectively, to be susceptible. However, ampicillin, amoxicillin and cephradine had the lowest number of susceptible isolates with them being 10.95, 12.36, and 9.83%, respectively. These results help inform farms striving to implement organic practices on how to produce safer products by recognizing areas that pose greater risks as potential sources of contamination, in addition to identifying serotypes of interest, while also showcasing the current state of antibiotic efficacy and how this can influence antibiotic resistance trends in the future.

Tetracycline, Sulfonamide, and Erythromycin Residues in Beef, Eggs, and Honey Sold as "Antibiotic-Free" Products in East Tennessee (USA) Farmers' Markets

Foods that contain antibiotic residues have potential adverse health effects on consumers and provide selective pressure for the threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This study's objective was to measure tetracycline, sulfonamide, and erythromycin residues in beef, eggs, and honey sold as "antibiotic-free" at farmers' markets in East Tennessee (East TN) in the United States (U.S.). Between July and September 2020, 36 "antibiotic-free" food products (9 beef, 18 egg, and 9 honey products) were purchased from East TN farmers' markets and tested for tetracycline, sulfonamide, and erythromycin residues using competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (cELISA). All beef, egg, and honey products had tetracycline residue; the median concentrations were 51.75, 30.25, and 77.86 µg/kg, respectively. Sulfonamide residue was present in every sample of beef. Of 18 eggs, 11 eggs had detectable sulfonamide residue; the median concentrations were 3.50 and 1.22 µg/kg in beef and eggs, respectively. Each sample of beef and honey contained erythromycin residue; the median concentrations were 3.67 and 0.68 µg/kg, respectively. Overall, the median concentrations of tetracycline, sulfonamide, and erythromycin residues were below the maximum residue levels (MRLs) set in the U.S. for beef and eggs. Thus, the beef and eggs sold as "antibiotic-free" in East TN farmers' markets can be considered safe for consumption. Safety determination for honey could not be made because MRLs have not been set for honey in the U.S. Because these residues should not be expected in "antibiotic-free" food products, it is important to further investigate the potential sources of these residues in these products.

When smartphone enters food safety: A review in on-site analysis for foodborne pathogens using smartphone-assisted biosensors

Pathogens are one of the supreme threats for the public health around the world in food supply chain. The on-site monitoring is an emerging trend for screening pathogens during the food processing and preserving. Traditional analytical tools have been unable to satisfy the current demands. Smartphones have enormous potentials for achieving on-site detection of foodborne pathogens, with intrinsic advantages such as small size, high accessibility, fast processing speed, and powerful imaging capacity. This review aims to synthesize the current advances in smartphone-assisted biosensors (SABs) for sensing foodborne pathogens, and briefly put forward the problem that consist in the research. We present the role of nanotechnology and recognition modes targeting foodborne pathogens in SABs, and discuss the signal conversion platforms coupling with smartphone. The challenges and perspectives in SABs are also proposed. The smartphone analytics area is moving forward, and it much be subject to careful quality standards and validation.

[Clinical and epidemiologic description of a severe outbreak of Salmonellosis in an urban nursery school]

OBJECTIVE

We describe clinically and epidemiologically an outbreak of gastrointestinal infection by Salmonella enterica ser. (serotype) Enteritidis in an urban infant school, which led to high morbidity and significant social alarm. The immediate communication, as well as the adequate study of the outbreak, in both aspects, allowed identifying the pathogen and establishing control measures in a reasonable period of time. Controversial aspects such as the indication of antibiotherapy or the moment of closing the center are discussed.

METHODS

We retrospectively collected clinical, analytical and epidemiological information and we reviewed the methodology of the outbreak study and its results.

RESULTS

A total of 57 children (3-45 months), were affected and had microbiological confirmation. Diarrhea and fever were the main symptoms. 74% went to the hospital and 37% were admitted (mean stay 3.3 days). Factors associated with admission were: dehydration, significant elevation of acute phase reactants and coagulopathy. Twelve patients received parenteral cefotaxime. There were 2 complications: 1 bacteremia and 1 readmission. The initial suspicion of the origin of the outbreak was food, but the analysis of the control samples was negative. Five workers were positive (2 symptomatic). Epidemiologic Surveillance concluded that the probable origin of the outbreak was an asymptomatic carrier and improper diapers handling. The center was closed for 8 days. Cleaning and disinfection measures were carried out, as well as instruction on diaper changing, and the carriers were followed.

CONCLUSIONS

Clustering in time and space of cases should be reported immediately for early control of the outbreak. Children may present severe forms of Salmonella gastroenteritis.

Risk factors of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli in livestock raised on diversified small-scale farms in California

The increasing number of diversified small-scale farms (DSSF) that raise outdoor-based livestock in the USA reflects growing consumer demand for sustainably produced food. Diversified farms are small scale and raise a combination of multiple livestock species and numerous produce varieties. This 2015–2016 cross-sectional study aimed to describe the unique characteristics of DSSF in California, estimate the prevalence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) in livestock and evaluate the association between risk factors and the presence of STEC in livestock, using generalised linear mixed models. STEC prevalence was 13.62% (76/558). Significant variables in the mixed-effect logistic regression model included daily maximum temperature (OR 0.95; CI_95% 0.91–0.98), livestock sample source (cattle (OR 4.61; CI_95% 1.64–12.96) and sheep (OR 5.29; CI_95% 1.80–15.51)), multiple species sharing the same barn (OR 6.23; CI_95% 1.84–21.15) and livestock having contact with wild areas (OR 3.63; CI_95% 1.37–9.62). Identification of STEC serogroups of public health concern (e.g. O157:H7, O26, O103) in this study indicated the need for mitigation strategies to ensure food safety by evaluating risk factors and management practices that contribute to the spread and prevalence of foodborne pathogens in a pre-harvest environment on DSSF.

Simultaneous Detection of Four Main Foodborne Pathogens in Ready-to-Eat Food by Using a Simple and Rapid Multiplex PCR (mPCR) Assay

The increasing consumption of organic or ready-to-eat food may cause serious foodborne disease outbreaks. Developing microbiological culture for detection of food-borne pathogens is time-consuming, expensive, and laborious. Thus, alternative methods such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) are usually employed for outbreaks investigation. In this work, we aimed to develop a rapid and simple protocol for the simultaneous detection of Escherichia coli (E coli), Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes), Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Salmonella enterica (S. enterica), by the combination of an enrichment step in a single culture broth and a multiplex PCR (mPCR) assay. The effectiveness of several enrichment media was assessed by culture and PCR. Buffered peptone water (BPW) was selected as the optimum one. Then, mPCR conditions were optimized and applied both to pure co-cultures and artificially inoculated food samples (organic lettuce and minced meat). In the culture medium inoculated at 10⁰ CFU/mL, mPCR was able to detect the four microorganisms. When performed on artificially food samples, the mPCR assy was able to detect E. coli, S. enterica, and L. monocytogenes. In conclusion, BPW broth can effectively support the simultaneous growth of E. coli, S. aureus, L. monocytogenes, and S. enterica and could be, thus, used prior to a mPCR detection assay in ready-to-eat food, thereby considerably reducing the time, efforts and costs of analyzes.

Survival and Persistence of Foodborne Pathogens in Manure-Amended Soils and Prevalence on Fresh Produce in Certified Organic Farms: A Multi-Regional Baseline Analysis

Biological soil amendments of animal origin (BSAAOs), including untreated (e.g., raw or aged manure, or incompletely composted manure) and treated animal products (e.g., compost), are used for crop production and as part of soil health management. Application of BSAAO's must be done cautiously, as raw manure commonly contains enteric foodborne pathogens that can potentially contaminate edible produce that may be consumed without cooking. USDA National Organic Program (NOP) certified production systems follow the 90-or 120-day interval standards between applications of untreated BSAAOs and crop harvest, depending on whether the edible portions of the crops are in indirect or direct contact with the soil, respectively. This study was conducted to evaluate the survival of four foodborne pathogens in soils amended with BSAAOs and to examine the potential for bacterial transfer to fresh produce harvested from USDA NOP certified organic farms (19) from four states. Only 0.4% (2/527) of produce samples were positive for L. monocytogenes. Among the untreated manure and compost samples, 18.0% (42/233) were positive for at least one of the tested and culturable bacterial foodborne pathogens. The prevalence of non-O157 STEC and Salmonella in untreated manure was substantially &gt; that of E. coli O157:H7 and L. monocytogenes. Of the 2,461 soil samples analyzed in this study, 12.9% (318) were positive for at least one pathogen. In soil amended with untreated manure, the prevalence of non-O157 STEC [7.7% (190) and L. monocytogenes (5.0% (122), was &gt; that of Salmonella (1.1% (26)] or E. coli O157 [0.04% (1)]. Foodborne pathogen prevalence in the soil peaked after manure application and decreased significantly 30 days post-application (dpa). However, non-O157 STEC and L. monocytogenes were recovered from soil samples after 90 and 120 dpa. Results indicate that produce contamination by tested foodborne pathogens was infrequent, but these data should not be generalized outside of the specific wait-time regulations for organic crop production and the farms studied. Moreover, other sources of contamination, e.g., irrigation, wildlife, environmental conditions, cropping and management practices, should be considered. This study also provides multi-regional baseline data relating to current NOP application intervals and development of potential risk mitigation strategies to reduce pathogen persistence in soils amended with BSAAOs. These findings contribute to filling critical data gaps concerning occurrence of fecal pathogens in NOP-certified farming systems used for production of fresh produce in different US regions.

Secretory System Components as Potential Prophylactic Targets for Bacterial Pathogens

Bacterial secretory systems are essential for virulence in human pathogens. The systems have become a target of alternative antibacterial strategies based on small molecules and antibodies. Strategies to use components of the systems to design prophylactics have been less publicized despite vaccines being the preferred solution to dealing with bacterial infections. In the current review, strategies to design vaccines against selected pathogens are presented and connected to the biology of the system. The examples are given for Y. pestis, S. enterica, B. anthracis, S. flexneri, and other human pathogens, and discussed in terms of effectiveness and long-term protection.

Comparison of China's and the European Union's Approaches to Antimicrobial Stewardship in the Pork Industry

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a recognized global public health concern. Although the link between antimicrobial usage in food animals and AMR in humans is established, the detailed interactions are unclear. Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) in livestock was first implemented in Europe with Sweden as the pioneer in 1986. Despite this head start, AMR is still an ongoing challenge for Europe. The European Union (EU) is an established agriculture producer, the second largest pork producer globally, and one of the largest markets for organic food. China is the global leader in both production and consumption of pork. China's rise in prosperity has led to an increase in its pork demand. Chinese producers commonly use antimicrobials during production for disease treatment and prevention to meet this increased demand. China's rising prosperity together with recent publicized food safety scandals, disease outbreaks in domestic livestock products, and increased AMR awareness have resulted in an increased willingness to pay and demand for organic food by Chinese consumers. Responding to the growing concerns of AMR by consumers and the World Health Organization (WHO), the Chinese government introduced a national pilot program in 2016 to reduce unnecessary antimicrobial use. Compared with China, the EU is a different entity as it is a political union comprising diverse countries and although it may have more experience in AMS, both entities face similar issues with AMR and increasing demand for organic food. Increased interest in organic food has arisen due to concerns about AMR, food safety, outbreaks of bacterial food contamination, and animal welfare. This article aims to compare the different AMS strategies employed by each entity, China and the EU, and how the increased demand for organic produce globally also influences the effort to reduce antimicrobial use in these entities' pork industries.

Microbiological Safety of Food of Animal Origin from Organic Farms

The organic food sector and consumer interest in organic products are growing continuously. The safety and quality of such products must be at least equal to those of conventional equivalents, but attaining the same standards requires overcoming a particular problem identified in organic food production systems: the occurrence of bacterial pathogens such as Salmonella, Campylobacter, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus and pathogenic Escherichia coli. These food-borne microorganisms were detected in the production environments of such food. The prevalence of pathogenic bacteria in organic livestock and products may be higher, but may also be the same as or lower than in like material from conventional farms. Furthermore, the incidence of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria was more often detected in conventional than in organic production. The aim of this review was to present the recent information on the microbiological safety of food of animal origin produced from raw materials from organic farms.

Growth of Listeria monocytogenes Inoculated on Packaged Fresh-Cut Turnips Stored at 4 and 10°C

ABSTRACT

The ecology of Listeria monocytogenes has been previously investigated in various whole and minimally processed raw vegetables, but not in turnips. A 2018 national Canadian recall for packaged fresh-cut turnips contaminated with L. monocytogenes raised concerns about turnips being able to support the growth of this microorganism. Thus, this study examined the growth potential of L. monocytogenes in fresh-cut turnips stored at 4 and 10°C. The bacterial microbiota of each brand of purchased turnips was also partially determined to evaluate the diversity of bacteria present on the product. Turnips were mist inoculated at an initial level of 3.0 log CFU/g using a five-strain L. monocytogenes cocktail. Samples were then stored at either 4 or 10°C for 10 days, with enumeration occurring at 0, 5, and 10 days. L. monocytogenes did grow on turnips stored at 10°C, with increases ranging from 0.87 to 1.84 log CFU/g over the 10-day storage period (P < 0.05). In contrast, L. monocytogenes was able to survive but not grow on turnips stored at 4°C for 10 days. This study reinforces the importance of strict temperature control within processing, retail, and household consumer settings. Avoiding temperature abuse conditions and storing packaged fresh-cut turnips under refrigerator conditions (≤4°C) can serve as an important hurdle to prevent and/or limit the growth of L. monocytogenes on these products.

Survey of Traveler’s Diarrhea: Epidemiology and Testing Reveal the Source

Objective

To understand the causes and transmission routes of, as well as risk factors, for a Salmonella outbreak in a tour group.

Method

A retrospective cohort design was used to conduct an epidemiological field investigation. Real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR, bacterial culture, and serological identification methods were used for pathogen detection and identification.

Result

There were 7 cases of illness, and the attack rate was 46.67%. The onset date was concentrated on May 9 and 10. All cases were found in the tour group, and no cases occurred in the nontour group. The results of this retrospective cohort study showed that the consumption of boiled eggs for breakfast on May 9 was a common factor (R² = 6.67, P=0.023). Salmonella enteritidis was identified from the patients' stool and vomit.

Conclusion

The food poisoning epidemic was caused by Salmonella enteritidis. In the summer and autumn, attention should be paid to preservation, processing, and cooking of food to avoid bacterial contamination. To prevent sickness, travelers should know the disease prevalence at their destinations in advance.

A natural biopreservative: Antibacterial action and mechanisms of Chinese Litsea mollis Hemsl. extract against Escherichia coli DH5α and Salmonella spp

Chemical preservatives have potential safety hazards, which may pose threats to human health. Safer biopreservatives are therefore urgently required. This study investigated the bacteriostatic activity and mechanism of Litsea mollis Hemsl. essential oil against Escherichia coli DH5α and Salmonella spp. Antibacterial activity of Litsea mollis Hemsl. essential oil 9 (LMEO9) against E. coli DH5α was observed (zone of inhibition was 5.0 ± 0.2 mm; minimum inhibitory concentration was 0.05%). Increases in electrolyte, nucleic acid, and alkaline phosphatase leakage in LMEO9-treated bacteria suggested that the cell envelope had been damaged. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy also demonstrated morphological alterations and content leakage during LMEO9 treatment. According to the kill-time analysis and propidium iodide uptake assay, LMEO9 led to cell death. These results demonstrated that LMEO9, which could affect bacterial cell envelope structural integrity, is a low-cost biopreservative that could be useful for the dairy industry and in fresh storage.

Comparison of metabolic response between the planktonic and air-dried Escherichia coli to electrolysed water combined with ultrasound by 1H NMR spectroscopy

The antimicrobial effects of electrolysed water and ultrasound have been well reported; however, little attention was paid to their effects on the metabolite changes of bacteria in different states. In this study, the metabolomic variations of Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 in planktonic and adherent state (air-dried on stainless steel coupons) after the combination treatment of low-concentration acidic electrolysed water (AEW, free available chlorine (FAC): 4 mg/L) and ultrasound were characterised, by conducting multivariate data analysis based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Overall, 43 metabolites were identified in two states of E. coli, including a wide range of amino acids, organic acids, nucleotides and their derivatives. The quantification of whole-cell metabolism in planktonic and air-dried cultures was quite different: air-dried E. coli exhibited more resistance to ultrasound and AEW treatments due to initiating a protective response against oxidative and acid stresses, which was not observed in planktonic E. coli, whose levels of all identified metabolites were decreased significantly after the combined treatment. Further pathway analysis revealed that alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism, glycolysis, pyruvate metabolism and tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle were changed significantly in planktonic culture, but to a less extent in air-dried culture, in which some shifts in glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) system and some shunts like mixed acid fermentation and pentose phosphate pathway were observed for maintaining metabolic balance. These findings suggest that NMR-based metabolomics strategy is promising in identifying different metabolic shifts in different states of bacteria. They also provide some guidance for food equipment sanitisation, especially for organic food processing.

Assessing the relationship between organic farming practices and microbiological characteristics of organic lettuce varieties (Lactuca sativa L.) grown in Sao Paulo, Brazil

AIMS

This study aimed to gather information on farming practices employed in organic lettuce fields in Sao Paulo, Brazil and associate these practices with the microbiological characteristics of the products.

METHODS AND RESULTS

Practices were surveyed using a questionnaire applied in ten farms, where 200 heads of lettuce were collected and submitted to enumeration of total coliforms and generic Escherichia coli and tested for Salmonella spp. using culture and molecular (qPCR) methods. Based on the responses, the farms could be clustered in two groups: group 1, comprised by six farms, where chicken manure was used as fertilizer in most of them and the composting process was not performed on site; and group 2, comprised by four farms, where other types of fertilizer were used, and the composting process was performed on site. Generic E. coli was detected in 56 (28%) samples, with an average of 1·1 ± 0·7 log MPN per g. Salmonella DNA was detected in two (1%) samples by qPCR.

CONCLUSIONS

The prevalence and bacterial loads of generic E. coli, and the occurrence of Salmonella, even at low populations undetectable by conventional culture methods, highlight the need for control measures during farming practices to reduce microbial contamination and risks of foodborne illnesses. These measures include the use of properly composted manure and appropriate washing procedures for leafy vegetables before consumption.

SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY

The obtained data contribute to a better understanding of the farming practices of organically grown lettuces in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

A nano-carrier platform for the targeted delivery of nature-inspired antimicrobials using Engineered Water Nanostructures for food safety applications

Despite the progress in the area of food safety, foodborne diseases still represent a massive challenge to the public health systems worldwide, mainly due to the substantial inefficiencies across the farm-to-fork continuum. Here, we report the development of a nano-carrier platform, for the targeted and precise delivery of antimicrobials for the inactivation of microorganisms on surfaces using Engineered Water Nanostructures (EWNS). An aqueous suspension of an active ingredient (AI) was used to synthesize iEWNS, with the 'i' denoting the AI used in their synthesis, using a combined electrospray and ionization process. The iEWNS possess unique, active-ingredient-dependent physicochemical properties: i) they are engineered to have a tunable size in the nanoscale; ii) they have excessive electric surface charge, and iii) they contain both the reactive oxygen species (ROS) formed due to the ionization of deionized (DI) water, and the AI used in their synthesis. Their charge can be used in combination with an electric field to target them onto a surface of interest. In this approach, a number of nature-inspired antimicrobials, such as H₂O₂, lysozyme, citric acid, and their combination, were used to synthesize a variety of iEWNS-based nano-sanitizers. It was demonstrated through foodborne-pathogen-inactivation experiments that due to the targeted and precise delivery, and synergistic effects of AI and ROS incorporated in the iEWNS structure, a pico- to nanogram-level dose of the AI delivered to the surface using this nano-carrier platform is capable of achieving 5-log reductions in minutes of exposure time. This aerosol-based, yet 'dry' intervention approach using iEWNS nano-carrier platform offers advantages over current 'wet' techniques that are prevalent commercially, which require grams of the AI to achieve similar inactivation, leading to increased chemical risks and chemical waste byproducts. Such a targeted nano-carrier approach has the potential to revolutionize the delivery of antimicrobials for sterilization in the food industry.

Antimicrobial activity of gelatin films based on duck feet containing cinnamon leaf oil and their applications in packaging of cherry tomatoes

Duck feet gelatin (DFG) films were prepared and applied to the packaging of cherry tomatoes. Cinnamon leaf oil (CLO) was incorporated into the DFG films at concentrations of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5% to provide antimicrobial activity. The DFG films with 1.0% CLO incorporation exhibited the most desirable tensile strength (41.6 MPa) and elongation at break (18.5%). Regarding the antimicrobial activity, the DFG films containing CLO significantly inhibited the growth of foodborne pathogens. In addition, the DFG film with 1.0% CLO was employed in the coating and wrapping of cherry tomatoes inoculated with Salmonella typhimurium. The DFG film with 1.0% CLO incorporation reduced the population of the bacteria to below the detection limit. Moreover, the DFG film with CLO delayed the color change on cherry tomatoes. Overall, the DFG film with CLO enhanced the shelf life of cherry tomatoes and can be used as an antimicrobial packaging.
