Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare nutritional and postoperative outcomes between early oral feeding and late oral feeding with jejunostomy feeding support after esophagectomy. BACKGROUND Esophagectomy is associated with substantial body weight loss and malnutrition, impacting the prognosis of esophageal cancer patients. Despite many studies on postesophagectomy nutritional support, optimal strategies remain elusive. This study investigates the impact of jejunostomy feeding with late oral feeding compared to conventional oral feeding on nutritional and postoperative outcomes. METHODS We performed a single-center prospective open-labelled randomized controlled trial between 2020 and 2022. Patients aged 18 to 75 years with resectable esophageal cancer were randomly assigned to undergo either early oral feeding (early group) or late oral feeding with jejunostomy feeding support (late group) after esophagectomy. The primary endpoint was body weight loss from preoperative body weight at postoperative 4 to 5 weeks and 4 months. Other perioperative and nutritional outcomes were also evaluated. RESULTS We randomly assigned 29 patients to the early group and 29 patients to the late group. The late group exhibited significantly less body weight loss at both postoperative 4 to 5 weeks (8.3% vs. 5.6%; P =0.002) and 4 months (15.0% vs. 10.5%; P =0.003). The total calorie intake and protein intake were higher in the late group for both postoperative 4 to 5 weeks (1800 kcal/day vs. 1100 kcal/day; P <0.001) and 4 months (1565 kcal/day vs. 1200 kcal/day; P =0.010). Sixty percentage of the early group changed to malnutrition state, while 40% of the late group changed to malnutrition. The complication rate and length of hospital stays were similar. CONCLUSIONS The late group demonstrated prevention of significant body weight loss, enhanced nutritional intake, and reduced malnutrition without compromising short-term surgical outcomes.

Abstract
Understanding the patterns of lymph node (LN) metastases in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is important for accurate staging and defining the extent of lymphadenectomy. This study clarified the patterns of LN metastases in ESCC using data mining techniques. 1181 patients with LN metastases who underwent upfront esophagectomy for ESCC were analyzed. Network analysis and association rule mining (ARM) techniques were employed to visualize and quantify LN metastases according to the T stage (T1 vs. T2-4) and the primary lesion location. Network plots depicted the relationship between primary lesions and metastatic LNs, and mutual LN metastasis patterns. ARM metrics assessed connection strengths among LNs. Network analysis identified the most prevalent LN metastases at 106recR/L, 105-108-110, and 1-2-7, independent of the T stage and location. ARM indicated high metastases likelihood at 106recR/L for upper ESCC, 1-2-7 and 106recR for mid-ESCC, and 1-2-7 for lower ESCC. Mutual metastases analysis identified 106recR/L, 1-2-7, and 105-108-110 as common metastasis stations across all subgroups. Conviction showed that cervical LN metastasis occurred independently of 106recR/L. Data mining techniques elucidate the intricate patterns of LN metastases and the association between metastatic LNs in ESCC.

Abstract
Background/Aims Early diagnosis of esophageal cancer (EC) remains challenging despite the increasing frequency of endoscopic screenings globally. The rapidly increasing number of endoscopic screenings performed over a certain period might influence diagnostic performance. This study evaluated the association between the number of endoscopic screenings and EC detection rates in a nationwide cohort. Methods This retrospective population-based study used the Korean National Cancer Screening Program database, comprising 32,774,742 males and females aged ≥40 years between 2015 and 2019. Negative binomial regression model and least-squares mean evaluation were used to assess the association between month of the year and EC detection rates. Results This study enrolled 28,032,590 participants who underwent upper endoscopy. The number of participants in the fourth quarter (October to December: 10,923,142 [39.0%]) was 2.1 times higher than that in the first quarter (January to March: 5,085,087 [18.1%]); this trend continued for all 5 years. Contrarily, detection rates for EC in the fourth quarter (0.08/1,000 person) were half that in the first quarter (0.15/1,000 person). The odds of detecting EC were lowest in November; in 2015 the odds were 0.57 (95% confidence interval, 0.41 to 0.79; p=0.001) times lower and in 2016, they were 0.51 (95% confidence interval, 0.37 to 0.68; p<0.001) times lower compared to January. The predicted detection rates showed a decreasing trend toward the end of the year (p>0.05 for all). Conclusions The workload of endoscopists increased excessively with the rising number of endoscopies toward the end of the year, which was reflected by the decreased EC detection rates during this period.

Abstract
According to 2021 statistics, esophageal cancer ranked as the 18th most common cancer and the 10th leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Korea, predominantly manifesting as squamous cell carcinoma. The incidence of esophageal cancer in Korea has been on a gradual decline, while the proportion of early-stage diagnoses has increased, leading to an improvement in the 5-year relative survival rate. The Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service, reports that around 800 esophagectomy procedures are performed each year. However, due to the absence of recent updates, there is a pressing need to establish a comprehensive nationwide registry or database for esophageal cancer and esophagectomy.

Abstract
PURPOSE Esophageal cancer is a predominantly male disease. However, the sex differences associated with esophageal cancer have not been thoroughly investigated. This study aimed to evaluate the differences between esophageal cancer in males and females in the Korean population. MATERIALS AND METHODS We assessed patients diagnosed with esophageal cancer between 2005 and 2015 at a tertiary referral center. The clinical features of patients, histopathologic characteristics of tumors, and treatment and survival outcomes were compared between male and female patients. RESULTS We enrolled 2,068 patients, comprising 1,924 (93.0%) males and 144 (7.0%) females. The median age at diagnosis was younger for females than males (65 vs. 63 years, p=0.004). Squamous cell carcinoma was the predominant pathological type (99.0% in males and 93.1% in females); however, the proportion of adenocarcinoma cases was higher in females than males (0.8% vs. 5.6%, p<0.001). Multivariate analysis indicated favorable overall survival for female patients (hazard ratio [HR], 0.685; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.548-0.857) and patients with high body mass index (≥25 kg/m², HR, 0.432; 95% CI, 0.355-0.526), and in early tumor stage (Stage 4, HR, 12.684; 95% CI, 7.451-21.591). The 5-year overall survival (44.8% vs. 53.5%, p=0.016) and recurrence-free survival rates (74.0% vs. 84.3%, p=0.036) were higher in females than in males. CONCLUSIONS We found significant sex differences in esophageal cancer among the Korean population, with female patients demonstrating distinct clinical characteristics and more favorable survival outcomes compared to male patients. These findings underscore the importance of considering sex-specific factors in the management and prognosis of esophageal cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The upper mediastinum is the most common metastatic site of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), and complete dissection of this region is important for oncologic reasons. This study aimed to compare the oncologic outcomes and completeness of upper mediastinal dissection for ESCC patients undergoing the Ivor-Lewis (IL) or McKeown (MK) operations. METHODS Between 2013 and 2018, 680 patients (IL, 433; MK, 247) underwent upfront esophagectomy with two-field lymph node (LN) dissection for mid-to-lower ESCCs. Propensity score-matching (1:1 ratio) was performed to minimize the effects of confounding factors. RESULTS The mean age was 64.5 ± 8.8 years, and 635 (93.4%) of the patients were male. The median follow-up period was 71.66 months (interquartile range [IQR], 59.60-91.04 months). The IL group had a higher mean age, lower body mass index, higher proportion of advanced T and N, and higher adjuvant therapy rates, but these differences were well-balanced after propensity score-matching. The mean number of dissected LNs at the mediastinum and at the right recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) were similar between the two groups after matching, whereas the IL group exhibited a slightly greater number of dissected LNs at the left RLN. Among the matched patients, the IL and MK groups exhibited similar 5-year overall survival (OS: 75.1% vs 78.0%; p = 0.368). The multivariate model showed no differences in OS, disease-free survival, or recurrence-free survival for locoregional, upper mediastinum, or neck between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that both the IL and MK operations are oncologically feasible for patients with mid-to-lower ESCC.

Abstract
Robotic esophagectomy has improved early outcomes and enhanced the quality of lymphadenectomy for esophageal cancer surgery. This study aimed to determine risk factors for long-term survival following robotic esophagectomy and the causes of long-term mortality. We included patients who underwent robotic esophagectomy at our institute between 2010 and 2022. Robotic esophagectomy was defined as a surgical procedure performed robotically in both the abdomen and thorax. Robotic esophagectomy was performed in patients at all stages, including advanced stages, even in patients with stage IV and supraclavicular lymph node metastasis. A total of 340 patients underwent robotic esophagectomy during the study period. Ivor-Lewis operation and McKeown operation were performed on 153 (45.0%) and 187 (55.0%) patients, respectively. The five-year survival rates based on clinical stages were as follows: 85.2% in stage I, 62.0% in stage II, 54.5% in stage III, and 40.3% in stage IV. Risk factors for long-term survival included body mass index, Charlson comorbidity index, clinical stages, and postoperative complications of grade 4 or higher. Among the cases of long-term mortality, recurrence accounted for 42 patients (61.7%), while non-cancer-related death occurred in 26 patients (38.2%). The most common cause of non-cancer-related death was malnutrition and poor general condition, observed in 11 patients (16.2%). Robotic esophagectomy has demonstrated the ability to achieve acceptable long-term survival rates, even in patients with cervical lymph node metastasis. However, addressing high-grade postoperative complications and long-term malnutrition remains crucial for further improving the long-term survival outcomes of patients with esophageal cancer.

Abstract
Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is closely associated with type 2 diabetes and a developing several cancers including esophageal cancer (EC). However, the association between MASLD and EC in diabetic patients has not been investigated. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the relation between MASLD and developing EC in diabetic patients. This was a population-based retrospective cohort study of data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service (NHIS). A total of 1,904,468 subjects diagnosed with diabetes who underwent NHIS-provided health checkups from 2009 to 2012 were included. We constructed a Cox proportional hazard model for the association of fatty liver index (FLI) and the risk of EC stratified by potential confounders. Over a mean follow-up duration of 6.9 years, the incidence of EC was higher in the high (≥60) FLI group compared to the low (<30) FLI group (14.4 vs. 13.7 event per 100,000 person-years). The risk of EC correlated with the degree of FLI, particularly in older (P = 0.002), female (P = 0.033), non-smoking (P = 0.002), and non-drinking patients (P = 0.025). Among obese patients, the risk of EC was not associated with FLI; however, the risk of EC was higher in the high FLI group in non-obese patients. Lean MASLD patients had the highest risk of EC (adjusted hazard ratio 1.78; 95% confidence interval, 1.5-2.13). MASLD was associated with an increased risk of EC in diabetic patients, and lean MASLD has the highest risk. Further studies are required to determine the causal relationship between MASLD and EC.

Abstract
Purpose Lymph node-based staging protocols are frequently employed to evaluate the prognosis of esophageal cancer, yet their accuracy remains contentious. The present study was conducted to assess the prognostic significance of three lymph node staging systems, namely N stage, lymph node rate (LNR), and log odds of positive lymph nodes (LODDS), in patients diagnosed with advanced (T2-T4) esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Methods This cohort comprised 319 eligible patients, with an additional 409 individuals retrieved from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database, forming the validation cohort. Differences in overall survival (OS) of patients between groups were assessed using the log-rank test. Prognostic independent risk variables were identified, and lymph nodes (LN) prognostic models were built using multivariate Cox regression analysis. Besides, the predictive accuracy of each model was evaluated utilizing the (-2) log-likelihood ratio (-2LLR), the likelihood ratio χ2 score (LRχ2), the Akaike information criterion (AIC), and Harrell's concordance index (C-index). To further evaluate the potential superiority of the model, a nomogram was constructed for comparison with the conventional Tumor Node Metastasis (TNM) staging approach. Results Independent prognostic factors for advanced ESCC include the N stage, LNR, and LODDS. Herein, LODDS presented higher values for C-index and LRχ2, and lower values for AIC and -2LLR in OS compared to the others. Consequently, a nomogram was constructed based on LODDS. Calibration curves exhibited strong agreement, and assessment through C-index, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, and clinical decision curve analysis (DCA) demonstrated promising clinical applicability. Conclusion LODDS emerges as a promising future prognostic indicator. After surgery, the proposed model holds the potential to provide valuable treatment recommendations for patients with advanced ESCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) shares common risk factors with liver cirrhosis (LC). The influence of LC in patients with ESCC has not been fully investigated. This study aimed to investigate the postoperative and long-term survival outcomes of esophagectomy for ESCC according to LC presence. METHODS Among patients who underwent curative-intent surgery for ESCC between 1994 and 2018, 121 patients with Child-Pugh class A LC and 2810 patients without LC were compared. RESULTS Among the LC patients, 73 (60.3%) were diagnosed with LC before surgery and 48 (39.7%) were diagnosed intraoperatively. There were no significant differences in baseline characteristics between patients with LC and those without LC. However, intraoperative blood loss was higher, and operation time, hospital stay, and ICU stay were longer in patients with LC than in those without LC. Moreover, the reoperation, 30-day morbidity (60.6 vs. 73.6%, P =0.006) and 90-day mortality (2.2 vs. 4.9%, P =0.049) were significantly higher in patients with LC. The 5-year overall survival (OS) rate was significantly higher in patients without LC than in those with LC. After adjusting the confounding variables, LC was an adverse risk factor of OS (hazard ratio 1.402, P =0.004). Among patients with LC, the Model of End-Stage Liver Disease score was related to the development of complications of grade more than III (odds ratio 1.459, P =0.013). CONCLUSION ESCC patients with Child-Pugh class A LC have high incidences of postoperative morbidity and mortality, and poor OS. Thus, careful patient selection, meticulous operation, and careful postoperative care are needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This retrospective study was performed to investigate the survival differences according to the pathologic status after neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgery in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), and to investigate whether current AJCC 8th ypStage can predict survival accurately. METHODS Data of 563 patients who received neoadjuvant therapy and esophagectomy for ESCC between 1994 and 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS The mean age was 62.00 ± 8.01 years, of which 524 (93.1%) were males. The median follow-up period was 29.12 months. A total of 153 (27.1%) patients showed pathologic complete response (pCR) and 92 (16.3%) patients showed pCR of the primary lesion with residual metastatic lymph nodes (ypT0N +). A total of 196 (35%) and 122 (21.6%) patients showed ypT + N + and ypT + N, respectively. The 5-year overall survival (OS) of each group was 75.1% (CR), 42.4% (ypT + N0), 54.9% (ypT0N +), and 26.1% (ypT + N +); CR patients showed better survival than the other groups, and no survival differences were found in the 5-year OS between ypT + N0 and ypT0N + patients (p = 0.811). In ypStage I, there were survival differences between ypT0N0 and ypTis-2N0 patients, and ypT1N0 (ypStage I) and ypT0N1 (ypStageIIIA) showed similar OS (5-year OS in 49.3% vs. 67.1%, p = 0.623). CONCLUSIONS pCR offers long-term survival in patients; however, survival significantly declines with the presence of residual primary lesion and nodal metastases.

Abstract
Esophageal cancer constitutes a global public health challenge. However, South Korean population-specific information on the association of lifestyle (smoking, alcohol consumption, and obesity status) with esophageal cancer risk is sparse. This nested case-control study analyzed the Korean national health screening cohort data (2002-2019) of 1114 patients with esophageal cancer and 4456 controls (1:4 propensity-score matched for sex, age, income, and residential region). Conditional and unconditional logistic regression analyses, after adjustment for multiple covariates, determined the effects of lifestyle factors on esophageal cancer risk. Smoking and alcohol consumption increased the esophageal cancer risk (adjusted odds ratio [95% confidence interval]: 1.37 [1.15-1.63] and 1.89 [1.60-2.23], respectively). Overweight (body mass index [BMI] ≥ 23 to <25 kg/m2), obese I (BMI ≥ 25 to <30 kg/m2), or obese II (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) categories had reduced odds of esophageal cancer (0.76 [0.62-0.92], 0.59 [0.48-0.72], and 0.47 [0.26-0.85], respectively). In the subgroup analyses, the association of incident esophageal cancer with smoking and alcohol consumption persisted, particularly in men or those aged ≥55 years, whereas higher BMI scores remained consistently associated with a reduced esophageal cancer likelihood across all age groups, in both sexes, and alcohol users or current smokers. Underweight current smokers exhibited a higher propensity for esophageal cancer. In conclusion, smoking and alcohol drinking may potentially increase the risk, whereas weight maintenance, with BMI ≥ 23 kg/m2, may potentially decrease the risk, for esophageal cancer in the South Korean population. Lifestyle modification in the specific subgroups may be a potential strategy for preventing esophageal cancer.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of adjuvant chemotherapy after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (CCRTx) followed by surgery in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively analyzed the data from 382 patients who received neoadjuvant CCRTx and esophagectomy for ESCC between 2003 and 2018. RESULTS This study included 357 (93.4%) men, and the years median patient age was 63 (range, 40 to 84 years). Overall, 69 patients (18.1%) received adjuvant chemotherapy, whereas 313 patients (81.9%) did not. The median follow-up period was 28.07 months (interquartile range, 15.50 to 62.59). The 5-year overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival were 47.1% and 42.6%, respectively. Adjuvant chemotherapy did not improve OS in all patients, but subgroup analysis revealed that adjuvant chemotherapy improved the 5-year OS in patients with ypT+N+ (24.8% vs. 29.9%, p=0.048), whereas the survival benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy was not observed in patients with ypT0N0, ypT+N0, or ypT0N+. Multivariable analysis revealed that ypStage and adjuvant chemotherapy (hazard ratio, 0.601; p=0.046) were associated with OS in patients with ypT+N+. Freedom from distant metastasis was marginally different according to the adjuvant chemotherapy (48.3% vs. 41.3%, p=0.141). CONCLUSION Adjuvant chemotherapy after neoadjuvant therapy followed by surgery reduces the distant metastasis in ypT+N+ ESCC patients, thereby improving the OS. The consideration could be given to administration of adjuvant chemotherapy to ypT+N+ ESCC patients with tolerable conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between pretreatment systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and long-term survival among Chinese esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients who received radical radiotherapy remains unclear. The aim of this study was to identify the prognostic role of pretreatment SII in Chinese ESCC patients receiving radical radiotherapy based on current evidence. METHODS The PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and CNKI databases were searched up to March 18, 2023. Primary and secondary outcomes were overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS), respectively. The hazard ratios (HRs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were combined to assess the predictive role of pretreatment SII for long-term survival of Chinese ESCC patients receiving radiotherapy. All statistical analyses were conducted by STATA 15.0 software. RESULTS A total of 8 eligibility studies involving 2101 cases were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled results demonstrated that elevated pretreatment SII was significantly related to worse OS (HR = 1.59, 95% CI: 1.24-2.02, P < .001) and PFS (HR = 1.33, 95% CI: 1.13-1.57, P < .001). Besides, subgroup based on TNM stage showed similar results. CONCLUSION Pretreatment SII could serve as a novel prognostic factor in Chinese ESCC patients receiving definitive radiotherapy and patients with an elevated SII may experience poorer survival.

Abstract
The present study evaluated the association of long-term statin use with the diagnosis and mortality of esophageal cancer in a Korean population. The Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort from 2002 to 2019 was enrolled. Esophageal cancer patients were matched with control participants for demographic variables. The statin prescription histories were collected and grouped into <180 days, 180 to 545 days, and >545 days of duration. Propensity score overlap weighting was applied to minimize the bias between the esophageal cancer and control groups. The odds ratios (ORs) of the duration of statin use for esophageal cancer were analyzed using propensity score overlap weighted multivariable logistic regression analysis. The esophageal cancer group was classified as dead and surviving patients, and the ORs of the duration of statin use for the mortality of esophageal cancer were analyzed in an identical manner. Secondary analyses were conducted according to comorbid factors. Patients with esophageal cancer did not show lower odds for the duration of statin prescription in the overall study population (OR = 1.30, 95% CI = 1.03-1.65, p = 0.027 for 180 to 545 days and OR = 1.29, 95% CI = 1.08-1.55, p = 0.006 for >545 days). Subgroups of nonsmokers, past and current smokers, alcohol consumption ≥ 1 time a week, SBP < 140 mmHg and DBP < 90 mmHg, fasting blood glucose ≥ 100 mg/dL, total cholesterol ≥ 200 mg/dL, CCI score = 0, and nondyslipidemia history demonstrated low odds for the duration of statin prescription. Both types of statins, hydrophilic and lipophilic statins, were not related to a lower rate of esophageal cancer. The mortality of esophageal cancer was not associated with the duration of statin prescription. A subgroup with total cholesterol ≥ 200 mg/dL showed lower odds of statin prescription for mortality of esophageal cancer. The duration of statin prescription was not related to a lower rate or mortality of esophageal cancer in the adult Korean population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Esophageal cancer is believed to be related to psychological stress. This study aimed to examine the prevalence and risk factors for new-onset depression after esophageal cancer surgery among patients who had no pre-existing depression. In addition, we examined whether pre-existing depression affected postoperative 1-year mortality. METHODS The National Health Insurance Service database in South Korea was used for data extraction in this population-based cohort study. This study included all adult patients diagnosed with esophageal cancer who underwent esophageal surgery between January 1, 2011, and December 31, 2018. RESULTS A total of 7039 adult patients who underwent esophageal cancer surgery at 95 South Korean hospitals were included in the analyses. Of the total, 608 patients (8.6%) were diagnosed with new-onset depression within 1 year after esophageal cancer surgery. Female sex, adjuvant chemotherapy, increased Charlson comorbidity index, pre-existing anxiety disorder, and pre-existing insomnia disorder were potential risk factors for new-onset depression. In multivariable Cox regression analysis, the pre-existing depression group showed a 1.27-fold (hazard ratio: 1.27; 95% confidence interval: 1.08-1.48; P = 0.004) higher risk of 1-year all-cause mortality than those who had no pre-existing depression. CONCLUSION In South Korea, 8.6% of patients are newly diagnosed with depression after esophageal cancer surgery, and some potential risk factors have been identified. Moreover, pre-existing depression was associated with increased 1-year all-cause mortality. Patients with esophageal cancer and pre-existing depression may be at high risk, requiring interventions after esophageal cancer surgery.

Abstract
Adenocarcinoma (AC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are the main subtypes of esophageal cancer (EC), but nationwide survival of both EC subtypes has never been reported in China. This study aimed to estimate the survival trends of EC by subtype in China and compare them with those in the USA for the same period. We used data from 64 Chinese cancer registries, which included EC patients diagnosed during 2008 and 2015 and followed up until 31st December 2017. The 5-year age-standardized relative survival by subtype, sex, age group, and urban or rural area between 2008 and 2017 were analyzed. We stratified survival estimates by calendar period (2008-09, 2010-11, 2012-14, and 2015-17). Data from the SEER 18 programme were calculated to estimate the survival of EC in the USA. A further comparison between the survivals in areas covered and not covered by population-based endoscopic screening programmes in China was conducted. A total of 129 962 records were included in the survival analyses. Results revealed that age-standardised 5-year relative survivals for AC and SCC increased in both China and USA from 2008 to 2017. In 2015-17, 5-year survival from both subtypes in China was better than the USA (SCC: 36.9% vs 18.5%, AC: 34.8% vs 22.3%). The survival for both subtypes was significantly higher in screening areas than in non-screening areas in China (SCC: 40.6% vs 32.8%; AC: 43.0% vs 31.3%). A survival gap in EC by subtype exists between China and USA. Our results may support the beneficial effect of population-based endoscopic screening for survival, and may be poised to inform national policy-making in both countries. Abstract
Objective To investigate into the clinical factors associated with posttreatment recurrence and death patterns in patients with advanced esophageal cancer. Methods Clinical information of patients with recurrence/metastasis and death after radical resection of esophageal cancer at our hospital between January 1, 2005, and December 31, 2015, were retrospectively collected and followed up. Postoperative recurrence-free survival time, postrelapse survival time, and overall survival time were compared among the metabolic-associated, organ failure-associated, and anastomotic recurrence-associated mortality groups. Results Five hundred and ninety-five qualified patients were retrieved, including 456 males and 139 females, with an average age of 58 ± 7.56 years. There were 57 cases of TNM-1 stage, 131 cases of TNM-2 stage, 365 cases of TNM-3 stage, and 42 cases of TNM-4 stage. There were 547 cases of squamous cell cancer and 48 cases of nonsquamous cell cancer. There were significant differences in age (p < 0.01), tumor location (p < 0.01), and lymph node metastasis (p = 0.04), recurrence type (p < 0.01) by one-way ANOVA, and recurrence-free survival (p = 0.02) and postrecurrence survival (p < 0.01) by Kaplan-Meier survival curve analysis among the three main death causes. Conclusions Age, tumor location, and lymph node metastasis were significantly different among metabolic-associated, organ failure-associated, and anastomotic recurrence-associated mortality of recurrent EC patients.
