Abstract
As of the 7th of July 2024, 775,754,322 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 7,053,902 deaths worldwide, had been reported to the WHO (World Health Organization). Nevertheless, untill the 15th of July 2024, a total of 13,578,710,228 vaccine doses had been administered, with almost no country spared from COVID-19 attacks. The pathophysiology of this virus is complicated, and several symptoms require a deep understanding of the actual mechanisms. It is unclear why some patients develop severe symptoms while others do not, although literature suggests a role for vitamin D. Vitamin D plays a crucial role in the infection or in ameliorating the severity of symptoms. The mechanism of action of vitamin D and vitamin D deficiency (VDD) is well understood. VDD is associated with increased hospitalization of severely ill patients and increased levels of COVID-19-caused mortality. Recent studies suggest that vitamin D levels and genetic variations in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene significantly impact the severity and outcomes of COVID-19, especially in the infections caused by Delta and Omicron variants. Furthermore, VDD causes immune system dysregulation upon infection with SARS-CoV-2, indicating that vitamin D sufficiency is crucial in fighting against COVID-19 infection. The therapeutic effect of vitamin D raises interest in its potential role as a prophylactic and treatment adjunct. We evaluate the immunomodulatory effects of vitamin D and its ability to enhance the efficacy of new antiviral drugs like molnupiravir and paxlovid against SARS-CoV-2. This review discusses the role of vitamin D sufficiency and VDD in COVID-19 initiation and progression, emphasizing the molecular mechanisms by which vitamin D exerts its actions as a proactive step for the next pandemic. However, there is still no clear evidence of vitamin D's impact on prevention and treatment, leading to contradictory findings. Therefore, large-scale randomized trials are required to reach a definitive conclusion. A bibliometric analysis of publications related to vitamin D, immunity, and COVID-19 revealed a significant increase in research activity in this area, particularly in 2020-2024, underscoring the growing recognition of vitamin D's potential role in the context of the pandemic.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Vitamin D deficiency is associated with bone metabolism and immune disorders. Radiation's seasonal variation affects vitamin D status more at the poles. In Mexico, near the equator, there have been reports of 10-20% vitamin D deficiency in children. There is no consensus on the definition of vitamin D deficiency, different organizations consider that a vitamin D level should be above 20-30 ng/mL. This study aimed to analyze vitamin D serum concentrations in children and adolescents from Mexico City and the Metropolitan Area (MA) during different seasons. METHODS Cross-sectional study in children and adolescents aged 5-20 years from Mexico City and Metropolitan Area, from autumn 2016 to winter 2017. Variables of interest such as anthropometric measurements, food consumption, and physical activity were analyzed. RESULTS A total of 816 children and adolescents were included. A high frequency of vitamin D deficiency was detected in 40.7% of the sample. The lowest vitamin D status occurred in winter 2016 and winter 2017. CONCLUSION We found a higher frequency of vitamin D deficiency during winter in children and adolescents in Mexico City and MA. This risk persisted after adjusting for age, sex, body mass index Z-score, milk consumption, physical activity, and screen time.

Abstract
Vitamin D (VD) is known to play an important role in the maintenance of calcium homeostasis and bone metabolism. In recent years, there has also been a growing interest in Vitamin D for health issues beyond the bones. Menopausal women are at risk of reduced bone density and increased risk of fracture due to a decline in estrogen levels. There is also an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and hyperlipidaemia due to impaired lipid metabolism. The menopausal and emotional symptoms due to menopause are also increasingly prominent. This article summarizes the role of Vitamin D in menopausal women's health, including the effects of Vitamin D on skeletal muscle, cardiovascular disease, Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM), cancer and emotional symptoms. Vitamin D regulates the growth of vaginal epithelial cells and alleviates genitourinary tract problems in menopausal women. Vitamin D also modulates immune function and influences the production of adipokines. Vitamin D and its metabolites also have an anti-proliferative effect on tumour cells. This narrative review, by summarizing recent work on the role of Vitamin D in menopausal women and in animal models of menopause, aims to provide a basis for further development of the role of Vitamin D in the health of menopausal women.

Investigating the Association between Diabetic Neuropathy and Vitamin D in Emirati Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Cells 2023; 12:cells12010198. Abstract
(1) Background: Vitamin D deficiency is a common public health problem in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and globally, and interestingly, improvements in diabetic neuropathy after taking Vitamin D supplementation for a short time have been reported. Despite living in a country that is sunny all year round, hypovitaminosis D, indicated by an obvious low serum vitamin D level, has been recurrently noted in the UAE, as well as in the surrounding Arabian Gulf countries. This problem is receiving much attention and attracting clinical and academic interest. Therefore, the main objective of the present study is to identify the association, if any, between vitamin D deficiency and the development of diabetic neuropathy in the UAE population with T2DM. (2) Methods: a total of 600 Emirati patients (male and female) with T2DM, aged between 20 and 80, were recruited from University Hospital Sharjah (UHS). The medical records of the patients were reviewed and analyzed. (3) Results: The results of the present study showed that among the 600 patients, 50% were affected with diabetic neuropathy. Vitamin D level in patients with neuropathy were estimated to be around 20 ng/mL (IQR 14-25), and vitamin D levels were significantly higher (33 ng/mL (IQR 20-42)) among patients without neuropathy, with p < 0.001. Another important finding was that patients without neuropathy had a better vitamin D status, with only 19% being deficient and 18% having insufficient vitamin D levels, compared to patients with neuropathy, where 39% were deficient (vitamin D < 20 ng/mL) and 44% had insufficient vitamin D levels (20-30 ng/mL). (4) Conclusion: The findings of the present study show that the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency (low serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D 25-OHD level) is significantly high in diabetic neuropathy in Emirati patients with T2DM.

Abstract
(1) The perimenopausal period and menopause are physiological stages of a woman's life, and they may result in the occurrence of many health problems. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of sociodemographic factors related to the use of stimulants and the presence of menstruation and vitamin D concentration in women's health based on the analysis of their body composition parameters. (2) The study was carried out among 191 women. The diagnostic poll method was used, the levels of serum vitamin D were tested, and a body composition analysis was carried out. (3) Correlations between the vitamin D serum concentration and the following factors were established: adipose tissue mass (%) (rho = -0.18; p = 0.011), visceral adipose tissue (rho = -0.18; p = 0.014), BMI (rho = -0.22; p = 0.002), muscle mass (rho = -0.19; p = 0.008), osseous tissue mass (rho = -0.18; p = 0.013), and the phase angle value (rho = -0.2; p = 0.005). A statistically significant correlation between adipose tissue mass (Mdn = 34.4 vs. 32.2; p = 0.018; η2 = 0.029), visceral adipose tissue (Mdn = 8 vs. 6; p = 0.000; η2 = 0.106), and metabolic age (Mdn = 49 vs. 42; p = 0.000; η2 = 0.098) exists. (4) The following conclusions were made: (i) Menstruating women were characterized by increased body composition parameters, especially adipose tissue mass, visceral adipose tissue, and metabolic age. Greater muscle and osseous masses were noted in regularly menstruating women. (ii) A correlation between the vitamin D concentration and body composition parameters in the studied women was observed.

Abstract
Infertility is a health concern affecting more than 186 million people globally, and male factors play a role in almost half of cases. Recently, the possible impact of vitamin D on male reproduction has become the center of attention. Our study intended to assess the correlation between serum vitamin D concentrations with sperm parameters and sex hormones in infertile Iranian men compared to fertile men. This cross-sectional study was performed among the 114 couples who were referred to the Urology Clinic of Imam Reza hospital in Mashhad, Iran. According to the inclusion criteria, 57 patients were entered into the infertility group, and 57 cases entered into the fertile group. Semen quality assessment was performed based on WHO guidelines, and the serum was analyzed for 25-hydroxy vitamin D, LH (luteinizing hormone), FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), and testosterone by ELISA method. Vitamin D level was significantly higher in the fertile group compared with infertile males (p < 0.001). Moreover, vitamin D level was positively correlated with some fertility indicators assessed by spermiogram test including sperm motility (p < 0.001, r = 0.483) and sperm count (p = 0.019, r = 0.216). Additionally, vitamin D was positively associated with testosterone level (p = 0.025, r = 0.210). There was no significant correlation between vitamin D concentrations with sperms morphology, LH, and FSH level. Our study showed a significantly lower vitamin D level in infertile males compared to the fertile group. In conclusion, our study results showed a positive correlation between serum vitamin D with sperm motility, sperm count, and serum testosterone level in fertile males compared to infertile men and suggest the beneficial effects of vitamin D on male reproduction.

Abstract
Given the rise in worldwide chronic diseases, supplemented by an aging population, the volume of global major surgeries, encompassing cardiac and orthopedic procedures is anticipated to surge significantly. Surgical trauma can be accompanied by numerous postoperative complications and metabolic changes. The present review summarized the results from studies assessing the effects of orthopedic and cardiovascular surgery on vitamin concentrations, in addition to exploring the possible mechanisms associated with changes in concentrations. Studies have revealed a potentially severe depletion in plasma/serum concentrations of numerous vitamins following these surgeries acutely. Vitamins C, D and B1 appear particularly vulnerable to significant depletions, with vitamin C and D depletions consistently transpiring into inadequate and deficient concentrations, respectively. The possible multifactorial mechanisms impacting postoperative vitamin concentrations include changes in hemodilution and vitamin utilization, redistribution, circulatory transport and absorption. For a majority of vitamins, there has been a lack of investigation into the effects of both, cardiac and orthopedic surgery. Additionally, studies were predominantly restricted to short-term postoperative investigations, primarily performed within the first postoperative week of surgery. Overall, results indicated that further examination is necessary to determine the severity and clinical significance of the possible depletions in vitamin concentrations that ensue cardiovascular and orthopedic surgery.

Abstract
In this prospective study on vitamin D and its associated factors conducted on 256 pregnant women from Anambra state of southeastern Nigeria, Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) occurred in 36 (14.1%). Vitamin D levels were significantly associated with parity, gestational age, social class, place of abode, skin colour, workplace location, and compliance to ANC drugs. Pregnant women with these features are considered to be at risk for vitamin D deficiency. The study however did not show any association between vitamin D and maternal age, social class of the pregnant women, and the season of the year. It is recommended that vitamin D supplementation be considered routinely for women with the risk factors - especially for the grandmultipara, women at term gestational age, women of dark complexion, those with indoor work location, and of urban habitat.Impact statementWhat is already known on this subject? Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin primarily responsible for calcium and phosphorous homeostasis in the human body. it is derived in the human body both from endogenous sources through cutaneous synthesis following exposure to sunlight, and from endogenous conversion from pre-vitamin D to 25-hdroxycholecalciferol (25 (OH)D. Vitamin D is essential in pregnancy for maternal health, foetal skeletal growth and bone development. Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) in pregnancy occurs globally with a prevalence of 4.7% to as high as 80%.What do the results of this study add? This study shows that parity, gestational age, social class, place of domicile, skin colour, workplace location, and compliance to ANC drugs constitutes associated factors to vitamin D levels.What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? These findings imply that grandmultiparous pregnant women, women at term gestational age, of dark complexion, with indoor work location, and of urban habitat, by virtue of their relatively lower levels of vitamin D, should be considered for routine vitamin D supplementation.

Abstract
Background To evaluate the effects of vitamin D (vitD) supplement on uterine fibroid growth. Materials and Methods A randomized blinded clinical trial was conducted at a tertiary university-based hospital
from August 2017 to September 2018. Totally, 204 women were enrolled into the study. They had at least one uterine
fibroid >10 mm on transvaginal ultrasound and their vitD level was insufficient (i.e. 20-30 ng/ml). The intervention
group was treated with vitD 50000 U supplements for two months. After 2 months, ultrasound screening and vitD
level measurement was done in both groups. Results At first, the mean serum vitD levels in intervention and control group were 23.62 and 23.20 ng/ml, respec-
tively. After 8 weeks, the mean serum vitD levels in the control and intervention group were 22.72 and 28.56 ng/ml
respectively (P<0.05). Also, mean fibroma diameter in the intervention group before and after 8 weeks of vitD supple-
mentation was 43 ± 4.68 and 42.6 ± 1.31 mm, respectively. Mean uterine fibroid diameter in the control group which
did not receive vitD supplements, before and after 8 weeks was 41.98 ± 5.25 and 47.81 ± 3.42 mm, respectively. The
variation in the mean size of the uterine fibroid between the control and intervention group which was respectively
about 5.83 mm increase and 0.48 mm decrease, was significant (P<0.001). Conclusion Our results showed that vitD supplementation prevents fibroid growth. It seems that vitD supple-
ment is a simple, safe and inexpensive modality for leiomyoma growth prevention (Registration number:

Abstract
Low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] is linked to an altered lipid profile. Monocytes play an important role in inflammation and lipid metabolism. Recently, monocyte percentage to HDL-cholesterol ratio (MHR) has emerged as a novel marker of inflammation. We investigated the association between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and MHR and serum lipids in young healthy adults. Data from the Qatar Biobank were utilized to investigate the relation between serum 25(OH)D and inflammation and serum lipid concentrations in healthy Qatari adults using multivariate regression analysis. Prevalence of serum 25(OH)D concentrations <12 ng/mL (deficiency), 12-20 ng/mL (insufficiency), and ≥20 ng/mL (sufficiency) were 55.8%, 29.9%, and 14.3%, respectively. Serum 25(OH)D was significantly inversely associated with monocyte percentage, MHR, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and triacylglycerol in multivariable adjusted analysis. MHR could be a potential biomarker to predict cardiometabolic diseases among young healthy Qataris.

Abstract
Objectives: In the literature, the effects of vitamin D on lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) have been investigated. Conflicting results have been reported in these studies conducted. LUTS is more common in women. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between vitamin D and LUTS in female patients using the uroflowmetric method. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 186 female patients who were admitted with LUTS. Demographic characteristics, medical history, calcium (Ca) and vitamin D, including laboratory studies and uroflowmetry results, as maximum urine flow rate (Qmax), average urine flow rate (Qav) and voided volume (V) were recorded. Patients were divided into two groups according to age (18-50 and ≥51) and vitamin D levels (<20 and ≥20). Laboratory parameters and uroflowmetry results were compared between groups. Results: Mean age was 56.85±12.95 years. Mean vitamin D level was 21.19±13.93 ng/mL (2.5-83.5). Mean Qmax value was 35.41±12.63, whereas the mean Qav was 19.13±9.89, and the mean V was 446.60±165.08 mL. Vitamin D levels differed according to age groups (p=0.044). No significant difference was observed between groups according to Qmax, Qav and V values (p>0.05). No significant correlation was detected between vitamin D level and Qmax, Qav and V values. However, a negative correlation was detected between serum Ca level and V values (p=0.042) in the low vitamin D group. Conclusion: There was no direct relationship between vitamin D levels and LUTS in respect to uroflowmetry. However, we determined that Ca levels affect the uroflowmetry parameter in patients with low vitamin D levels. There is a need for further studies emphasizing serum Ca levels in addition to vitamin D levels in patients with LUTS.

Abstract
Skeletal muscle, the largest organ in the human body, accounting for approximately 40% of body weight, plays important roles in exercise and energy expenditure. In the elderly, there is often a progressive decline in skeletal muscle mass and function, a condition known as sarcopenia, which can lead to bedridden conditions, wheelchair confinement as well as reducing the quality of life (QOL). In developed countries with aging populations, the prevention and management of sarcopenia are important for the improvement of health and life expectancy in these populations. Recently, vitamin D, a fat-soluble vitamin, has been attracting attention due to its importance in sarcopenia. This review will focus on the effects of vitamin D deficiency and supplementation on sarcopenia.

Abstract
Background: Burned patients have an increased need for vitamin D supply related to the maintenance of calcium–phosphate homeostasis and the regulation of cell proliferation/differentiation. This study aimed to analyze the concentration of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol and its relationship with severe condition after burn injury. Methods: 126 patients were enrolled in the study. Patients were qualified due to thermal burns—over 10% of total body surface area. On the day of admission, the following parameters were assessed: 25-hydroxycholecalciferol concentration, total protein concentration, albumin concentration, aspartate transaminase activity, alanine transaminase activity, albumin concentration, creatinine concentration, c-reactive protein concentration, procalcitonin concentration, and interleukin-6 concentration. Results: Almost all patients (92%) in the study group had an improper level of vitamin D (<30 ng/mL), with the average of 11.6 ± 10.7 ng/mL; 17.5% of patients had levels of vitamin D below the limit of determination—under 3 ng/mL. The study showed that there are several factors which correlated with vitamin D concentration during the acute phase of burn injury, including: total protein (r = 0.42, p < 0.01), albumin, (r = 0.62, p < 0.01), percentage of body burns (r = 0.36, p < 0.05), aspartate aminotransferase (r = 0.21, p < 0.05), and c-reactive protein (r = 0.22, p < 0.05). We did not find any significant correlation between vitamin D concentration and body mass index. Conclusions: The burn injury has an enormous impact on the metabolism and the risk factors of the deficiency for the general population (BMI) have an effect on burned patients. Our study showed that concentration of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol is strongly correlated with serum albumin level, even more than total burn surface area and burn degrees as expected. We suspect that increased supplementation of vitamin D should be based on albumin level and last until albumin levels are balanced.

Abstract
A combination of genetic and environmental factors contributes to the origins of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). While a number of studies have described specific environmental factors associating with emerging ASD, studies that compare and contrast multiple environmental factors in the same study are lacking. Thus, the goal of this study was to perform a prospective, data-driven environmental-wide association study of pre- and perinatal factors associated with the later development of autistic symptoms in childhood. The participants included 3891 6-year-old children from a birth cohort with pre- and perinatal data. Autistic symptoms were measured using the Social Responsiveness Scale in all children. Prior to any analyses, the sample was randomly split into a discovery set (2920) and a test set (921). Multiple linear regression analyses were performed for each of 920 variables, correcting for six of the most common covariates in epidemiological studies. We found 111 different pre- and perinatal factors associated with autistic traits during childhood. In secondary analyses where we controlled for parental psychopathology, 23 variables in the domains of family and interpersonal relationships were associated with the development of autistic symptoms during childhood. In conclusion, a data-driven approach was used to identify a number of pre- and perinatal risk factors associating with higher childhood autistic symptoms. These factors include measures of parental psychopathology and family and interpersonal relationships. These measures could potentially be used for the early identification of those at increased risk to develop ASD. LAY SUMMARY: A combination of genetic and environmental factors contributes to the development of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Each environmental factor may affect the risk of ASD. In a study on 6-year-old children, a number of pre- and perinatal risk factors were identified that are associated with autistic symptoms in childhood. These factors include measures of parental psychopathology and family and interpersonal relationships. These variables could potentially serve as markers to identify those at increased risk to develop ASD or autistic symptoms. Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW There is a growing, largely inconsistent, literature on the role of vitamin D in association with type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance/insulin secretion, glycemic indices, and complications of type 2 diabetes. Pathophysiologic, bystander, preventive, and treatment roles of vitamin D have all been proposed. In this focused review, we attempt to organize and clarify our current information in this area. RECENT FINDINGS Clinical study interpretation is difficult because of variability in dosage, dosage form, study duration, and populations studied, as well as recently reported normal human polymorphisms in vitamin D synthesis and catabolism, vitamin D-binding protein, and vitamin D receptors in addition to a host of potential epigenetic confounders. Low vitamin D status appears to be associated with type 2 diabetes and most other insulin resistance disorders reported to date. The extraskeletal benefits of supplementation/repletion in these disorders in our species, with a few highlighted exceptions, remain to be established. This focused review attempts to summarize our current knowledge in this burgeoning area through a review of key meta-analyses, observational studies, randomized control trials, and Mendelian randomization studies and will hopefully serve as a guide to indicate future research directions and current best practice.

Abstract
Introduction A rational dietary model is one of the key aspects in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Aim of the study The study aimed to analyse the frequency of consuming selected groups of food products among women aged 40-65 years with type 2 diabetes, depending on age, BMI, duration of disease, and level of life satisfaction. Material and methods The study was carried out among 276 women using the author’s specially designed questionnaire (metric data, duration of diabetes) and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). We assessed BMI values on the basis of measurements of somatic indicators (body mass and height). Statistical analysis was performed using Pearson’s r and Spearman’s R correlation coefficients via the SPSS programme (significance level of α = 0.05). Results Among the women with type 2 diabetes we observed nutritional deficiencies, in particular a low frequency of consuming the recommended product groups (vegetables, fruit, legume seeds, whole-grain cereals, dairy products with reduced fat content, and nuts). The scale of rational dietary choices among women increased along with age and perceived life satisfaction. As the time from diagnosis passed, this scale decreased. A decrease was also noted along with the increase in BMI. Conclusions The frequency of consuming some product groups shows a significant relationship with age, BMI, duration of disease, and the level of life satisfaction among women aged 40-65 years with type 2 diabetes.

Vitamin D3 deficiency has been correlated with altered expression of genes associated with increased blood pressure (BP); however, the role of vitamin D3 supplementation in the genetic mechanisms underlying hypertension remains unclear. Thus, the aim of this study was investigate the consequences of vitamin D3 supplemented (10,000 IU/kg) or deficient (0 IU/kg) diets on regulation of expression of genes related to hypertension pathways in heart cells of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive Wistar Kyoto (WKY) controls. An additional aim was to assess the impact of vitamin D3 on DNA damage and oxidative stress markers. The gene expression profiles were determined by PCR array, DNA damage was assessed by an alkaline comet assay, and oxidative stress markers by measurement of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and glutathione (GSH) levels. In SHR rats data showed that the groups of genes most differentially affected by supplemented and deficient diets were involved in BP regulation and renin-angiotensin system. In normotensive WKY controls, the profile of gene expression was similar between the two diets. SHR rats were more sensitive to changes in gene expression induced by dietary vitamin D3 than normotensive WKY animals. In addition to gene expression profile, vitamin D3 supplemented diet did not markedly affect DNA or levels of TBARS and GSH levels in both experimental groups. Vitamin D3 deficient diet produced lipid peroxidation in SHR rats. The results of this study contribute to a better understanding of the role of vitamin D3 in the genetic mechanisms underlying hypertension. Abstract
BACKGROUND Increasing age, increased body mass index (BMI), and abnormal lipid profiles contribute to an increased risk of vitamin D deficiency. Women who have a perimenopausal and postmenopausal reduction in estrogen levels are a high-risk group for vitamin D deficiency. The aims of this study were to compare the serum vitamin D levels, lipid profile, and BMI between perimenopausal and postmenopausal women in non-manual employment, and to determine whether there were any interdependent factors. MATERIAL AND METHODS Three hundred women in non-manual employment, aged between 44-66 years, were divided into three groups: early perimenopausal; late perimenopausal; and postmenopausal. Laboratory tests included measurement of serum lipid profiles and vitamin D levels, the BMI, waist-hip ratio (WHR) and body fat were measured. Statistical analysis included F-test analysis of variance and the least significance difference (LSD) test was used for multiple comparisons. RESULTS For the 300 women who were in non-manual employment, and in the early and late perimenopausal and postmenopausal periods, serum vitamin D levels were reduced (mean 16.8±8.7 ng/mL); 29% of women had abdominal obesity; 41% had excessive body fat accumulation; and 56% had an increased body mass index (BMI) (>25 kg/m²) with raised total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, LDL/high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and total cholesterol/HDL ratios (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study showed that in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women in non-manual employment, serum vitamin D levels were associated with serum lipid profile and degrees of obesity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the relationship of vitamin D status and vitamin D replacement therapy with glycemic control, serum uric acid (SUA) levels, and microalbuminuria (MAU) in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Subjectsand Methods: A total of 1,463 patients with T2DM and CKD (aged 14-88 years), 927 females and 536 males, were included in this study. The serum data of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, i.e., 25(OH)D, level, SUA, hemoglobin (Hb)A1c, creatinine, estimated glomerular filtration rate, and urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) were obtained from the medical records. The Mann-Whitney U test, the χ2 test, the Mantel-Haenszel test, and linear regression models were used for data analysis. RESULTS Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency were evident in 770 (52.0%) and 357 (24.0%) patients, respectively. Median HbA1c levels (7.3 [IQR 3.9] vs. 6.5 [IQR 2.3]%; p < 0.01) were significantly higher in patients deficient in vitamin D than in those with a normal vitamin D status. A significantly low level of vitamin D was noted with a high UACR (β -0.01; 95% CI -0.01 to -0.001; p = 0.017) and HbA1c (β -1.1; 95% CI -1.6 to -0.6; p < 0.001), but with low levels of SUA (β 1.3; 95% CI 0.5-2.2; p = 0.002). Vitamin D replacement was associated with a significantly low level of HbA1c (7.4 [2.7] vs. 6.7 [1.9]%; p < 0.001]. CONCLUSION In this study, there was a high prevalence of hypovitaminosis D among T2DM patients with CKD, with a higher UACR, higher HbA1c, and lower SUA being noted as playing a role in predicting a decrease in vitamin D levels and potential benefits of vitamin D replacement therapy on glycemic control in T2DM management.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of vitamin D supplementation in women with hypovitaminosis D and "small burden" uterine fibroids.This study focused on 208 women diagnosed with uterine fibroids and concomitant hypovitaminosis D, from January to December 2014. One hundred eight women of the initial study population were diagnosed with "small burden" uterine fibroids. Among them, those who underwent a proper vitamin D supplementation constituted the "study group" (n = 53), while women who spontaneously refused the therapy or did not perform it properly, constituted the "control group" (n = 55). The characteristics of uterine fibroids, the fibroid-related symptoms, and the vitamin D serum levels were evaluated 12 months after the initial diagnosis.In women with uterine fibroids, a negative correlation emerged between the baseline 25-hydroxy-cholecalciferol (25-OH-D3) concentration and both the volume of the largest fibroid (r = -0.18, P = 0.01) and the total volume of fibroids (r = -0.19, P = 0.01). No correlation was found between the baseline 25-OH-D3 levels and the number of fibroids per patient (r = -0.10, P = 0.16). In women of the "study group," a significant increase in the 25-OH-D3 serum level was observed after 12 months of supplementation, and a lower rate of surgical or medical treatment due to the "progression to extensive disease" was reported (13.2% vs 30.9%, P = 0.05).Supplementation therapy with 25-OH-D3 restores normal vitamin D serum levels in women with "small burden" fibroids. In these women, vitamin D supplementation seems to reduce the progression to an extensive disease, and thus the need of conventional surgical or medical therapy.

Abstract
Background: The field of parathyroidectomy (PTx) is complex and brings together many specialists. Even if the surgical approaches changed from classical to minimally invasive PTx, a good outcome is correlated with an adequate localization before and during PTx, while blood assays, such as parathormone (PTH) or 25-hydroxyvitamin D, become useful additional markers. Aim. Specific aspects related to parathyroidectomy and vitamins D (VD) were introduced. Material and Method. The article represents a PubMed-based narrative review. Results. The growing evidence regarding the high prevalence of hypovitaminosis D and early detection of primary hyperparathyroidism (HPT) requires a particular attention to the association of these two disorders, which may be incidental, but some common pathogenic links are displayed. Low VD stimulates PTH production as a secondary or even tertiary type of HPT diagnosis. VD deficiency is associated with larger parathyroid adenomas and higher levels of PTH before and after surgery for primary HPT. Asymptomatically and normocalcemic forms of primary HPT, which are not immediately referred to PTx, require a normalization of the VD levels. VD supplements are safe under some serum calcium cutoffs and offer a better outcome after PTx. However, primary HPT is cured by surgery and, if the indication is well established, this should not be delayed too long to replace VD. Up to half of PTx cases may experience increased PTH levels after surgery, but most of these are transitory if rapid VD correction is done and only a few remaining cases will eventually develop persistent / recurrent primary HPT. Conclusion. A close following of 25-hydroxivitamin D represents one of the keys for a good outcome in the field of parathyroid surgery. Abstract
We conducted a mini-review of the literature, focusing on aging-related systemic inflammation and its association with vitamin D (VitD). As main findings, data indicate that inflammation in aging seems to have multiple origins, including immunosenescence, and from intestinal and adipose tissue, where VitD may modulate these three factors, through mechanisms not totally known. From the selected studies, three randomized clinical trials of VitD supplementation showed improvements in inflammatory status, whereas two studies did not. Ten epidemiological studies showed associations between VitD and inflammation, whereas two studies did not. One case study reinforced this association. As such, we can assume a reasonable association between VitD and inflammation in the elderly, and a promising role of supplementation in some situations. However, most studies did not take into account environmental and individual factors such as the season of the year, latitude, skin color or even the use of some medicines; in addition, the doses, time of intervention and the sample sizes differed between the studies. In conclusion, although more controlled VitD studies, both clinical and epidemiological, are necessary, it is important to remember the network of factors involved in systemic inflammation in the elderly; an understanding of the dietetic and non-dietetic factors is needed to offer a realistic approach.

Abstract
Vitamin D3 has been described to have different extraskeletal roles by acting as parahormone in obesity, diabetes, cancer, cognitive impairment, and dementia and to have important regulatory functions in innate immunity. There are no studies showing extraskeletal changes associated with hypovitaminosis D3 in eating disorders. Methods. We have analyzed the blood of 18 patients affected by anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa collected over a 15-month period. We performed a panel of chemical and clinical analyses: the assay of vitamin D3, the immunoblotting of vitamin D receptor and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma, and the genotyping of 5-hydroxytryptamine transporter linked polymorphic region. Results. We choose 18 patients with a normal blood test profile such as thyroid hormones, hepatic and renal parameters, triglycerides, proteins, vitamin B12, and folic acid. Among these emerged the case of a woman with long-term anorexia nervosa and the case of a woman with long-term bulimia nervosa both complicated by anxiety and depression, severe hypovitaminosis D3, decrease of vitamin D receptor, leukopenia, and 5-hydroxytryptamine transporter linked polymorphic region short allele. Conclusion. The results induce hypothesising that the severe hypovitaminosis D3 might be responsible for the lack of the inflammatory response and the depressive symptoms in patients with long-term eating disorders.
