Factors Associated With Marital Satisfaction in Infertile Couple: A Comprehensive Literature Review

Precursors of Prenatal Attachment and Anxiety during Pregnancy in Women Who Procreate Naturally and Pregnant Women following Assisted Reproduction Technology

The process of adaptation of the woman to pregnancy seems to be influenced by many factors, such as the type of conception, the mother's age, the possible presence of other children, and socio-cultural factors. Women who conceived with an assisted reproductive technique are emotionally vulnerable; compared with pregnant women who procreated naturally, they manifest elevated anxiety, which seems to be correlated to the fright of being separated from their child. Objectives of the present research are as follows: (1) to analyze the relationship between age, gestational age, time expectancy, previous failed attempts, perception of a high-risk pregnancy, and presence of other children, with the level of maternal-fetal attachment (MFA); (2) explore the level of maternal-infant attachment and anxiety by comparing the control and experimental group; (3) to measure a possible relationship between anxiety levels and MFA in ART pregnant women; (4) to identify variables predictive of prenatal attachment. The study group is formed by ninety-five women aged between 18-42 years (M = 30.57; S.D. = 5.47), pregnant from the 23rd to the 37th week (M = 28.95; S.D. = 3.99); on which 50 women who procreate naturally and 45 pregnant women following assisted reproductive technology. They completed: Maternal-Fetal Attachment Scale (MFAS), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and ad hoc questionnaire to collect anamnestic data. The results show the presence of a correlation between gestational age and waiting period, between the number of assisted fertilization attempts with the worry about their ability to become pregnant, but a negative correlation between pregnancy weeks and the level of maternal-fetal attachment. The study shows the predictive role of anxiety on the MFA. The applications and indications for future research are analyzed.

Complex factors related to marital and sexual satisfaction among couples undergoing infertility treatment: A cross-sectional study

Objectives

This study assesses complex factors related to marital and sexual satisfaction among couples undergoing infertility treatment.

Methods

This cross-sectional study was conducted with 140 couples who visited fertility centers in Iran, between September 2015 and July 2016. Data collection was done by Marital and Sexual Satisfaction Questionnaires and were analyzed by the IBM SPSS 26 software.

Results

There was a significant difference between wives and husbands in the MSQ total scores (p = 0.027). However, there was no significant difference between wives and husbands in the SSQ total scores (p = 0.398). Sexual satisfaction and decision-maker in life among wives and husbands were significant predictors of MSQ. The kind of treatment, cause of infertility and BMI among wives and kinds of treatment, cause of infertility, and decision-maker among husbands were also significant predictors of SSQ.

Conclusion

The findings of this study showed that there is a difference between the understanding of marital and sexual satisfaction in wives and their husbands. Healthcare providers need to pay more attention to these differences.

The effect of cognitive behavior therapy on attitude of infertile individuals toward child adoption

Background

Infertility is one of the most important life-threatening crises that will cause serious psychological problems and serious stressful experiences for couples. Granting the parenting of neglected children can benefit both infertile couples and those children.

Purpose

The study aimed to investigate the effect of Cognitive-Behavioral Counseling (CBT) on the attitude of infertile individuals towards child adoption.

Methods

It is a clinical trial study. Forty samples were determined in each case and control group. Five 90-minute cognitive-behavioral counseling sessions were held for the intervention group. Control group participants were on the waiting list. Data were reported based on frequency distribution, central distribution, dispersion, Wilcoxon, and paired T-test. The level of significance was set at p < 0.05.

Findings

Participants in this study had a mean age of 32.5 years old, the mean years without children was 6.29 years, most of them had higher education. The majority of individuals in the control and intervention groups referred more than once to treat infertility. Based on the current study results, the attitude score of the intervention group before the consultation was 100.74, and it was 112.46 after counseling (p = 0.046). Moreover, the score of attitudes toward adoption after counseling in the control group was 97.10 and 112.46 in the intervention group (p < 0.001).

Conclusions

CBT has been influential on the attitude of infertile people towards adoption.

Relationship between fertility characteristics with spiritual intelligence and resilience in infertile couples

BACKGROUND

Infertility and the use of assisted reproductive therapies affect infertile couples quality of life. Infertile couples face many physical, psychological, and financial challenges due to having a higher level of spiritual intelligence and resilience will help the infertile couple to adapt to infertility conditions and achieve their therapeutic goals. This study was aimed to determine the relationship between fertility characteristics and spiritual intelligence and resilience in infertile couples.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This was a cross-sectional study that was conducted in 2020 on 162 infertile couples referring to infertility centers in Isfahan who met the inclusion criteria. Samples were selected by convenience sampling method. Information was gathered using a questionnaire consists of three parts: demographic and fertility characteristics, spiritual intelligence, and resilience. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods (t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and Chi-square). P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.

RESULTS

Pearson's correlation coefficient showed that there was no significant relationship between resilience score and spiritual intelligence score with age, duration of marriage, and duration of treatment (P > 0.05). There was no significant relationship between resilience score and spiritual intelligence score and its dimensions with the level of education and economic status of the family (P > 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

There was no significant relationship between demographic and fertility factors with spiritual intelligence and resilience.

The keys to a good and lasting marriage: Exploration of Iranian couple's experiences

BACKGROUND AND AIM

Marital satisfaction is a multidimensional phenomenon, which refers to the quality of marital relationship, or the general view of marriage status and reflection of happiness and marital performance. Repetition of certain positive behaviors can make a huge difference in the success of continued married life, and that awareness of such behaviors seems to be critical to recognizing certain warnings. Therefore, this study with qualitative approach conducted to promoting long-term marital satisfaction by exploring couple's experiences.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This study was conducted using descriptive phenomenology method. The participants were 12 person (six couples) with a history of 20-30 years of married life expectancy and a marital satisfaction score of above 65. The data were collected by purposeful sampling and semi-structured interviews, analyzed using Colaizzi method. By categorizing the codes, subcategories, and main categories were extracted.

RESULTS

An analysis of the experiences of the participants resulted in emergence of eight subcategories, and three main categories: "Strong Foundation For Living Together," "Mutual Commitment To Protecting Marital Cohesion," and "Striving To Improve Sexual Relations."

CONCLUSIONS

A long-term marriage associated with a variety of variables, including a strong foundation for living together, a mutual commitment to protect marital cohesion, and an effort to improve sexuality. And the results showed that the type of relationship will change during the years after marriage in a way that takes on certain meanings and concepts and can be interpreted in physiological, cultural and other specific contexts.

Infertility-related stress: A concept analysis

AIM

To develop a clear definition of infertility-related stress using Rodgers' method of concept analysis.

BACKGROUND

Infertility affects approximately 13% of women in the United States. Though poorly defined in the literature, previous studies suggest infertility-related stressors contribute to psychological distress.

DESIGN

Rodgers' method of concept analysis guided the review, including sample and setting, literature search, and data analysis.

DATA SOURCE

PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycINFO were searched for relevant literature.

REVIEW METHODS

Following abstract, title, and text screenings, 21 articles were included and reported using the PRISMA-S checklist. Texts were analyzed and results informed the proposed definition of infertility-related stress.

RESULTS

Antecedents included infertility, desire for children, and fear of the unknown. Attributes were identity crisis, social isolation and stigma, sexual stress, and financial strain. Consequences included treatment dropout and marital strain. Anxiety, depression, and decreased quality of life were identified as both attributes and consequences.

CONCLUSIONS

Synthesized results informed a proposed definition of infertility-related stress. Improved understanding of infertility-related stress allows for measurement development and facilitates recognition of patients in need of additional support, while potentially reducing the impact on the health and well-being of infertile women.

Couples undergoing Assisted Reproductive Techniques: An Actor-Partner Interdependence Model of dyadic adjustment, attachment, and body-image avoidance

The aim is to assess the commonalities and interdependence referred to body-image avoidance among 118 couples newly introduced to first-level assisted reproductive techniques. Results showed non-clinical functioning levels, and partners showed a correlated, yet low, dyadic adjustment. The couple-effect was modeled through an Actor Partner Interdependence Model. For both partners, dyadic adjustment’s actor-effect associates with body-image avoidance. Moreover, psychological symptoms’ actor-effect associate to body-image avoidance, resulting significantly more influential than the partner-effect. Only for males, alexithymia’s actor-effect was significant. To conclude, partners’ functioning is quite specular yet not interdependent, as they do not show a couple-as-a-unit modality of functioning. Clinical implications are discussed.

Self-efficacy, coping strategies and quality of life in women and men requiring assisted reproductive technology treatments for anatomical or non-anatomical infertility

OBJECTIVE

To examine the magnitude and the predictors of emotional reactions to an infertility diagnosis, comparing women and men who were clinically diagnosed with an anatomical cause of infertility or non-anatomical cause of infertility.

STUDY DESIGN

Cross-sectional study involving a total of 133 adults waiting for infertility treatment at the IVF and Infertility Unit of the S. Orsola University Hospital in Bologna (Italy). Of these, 107 patients (55 with anatomical causes of infertility and 52 with non-anatomical causes of infertility; response rate: 80%) took part to the study. After providing informed written consent, each participant was asked to complete the Infertility Self-efficacy Scale, the Fertility Quality of Life, and the Brief Coping Orientation to Problem Experienced, which they returned at their second access to the Unit. Differences between the groups were analyzed through a series of univariate ANOVA, whereas a multiple regression analysis was used to jointly examine the predictors of fertility quality of life.

RESULTS

Results showed both gender related and diagnosis related differences. Women had statistically significant lower scores than men on the Infertility Self-Efficacy Scale and on the global, emotional, and mind-body subscales of the Fertility Quality of Life, while they scored significantly higher on the emotion focused and socially supported subscales of the Coping Orientation to Problem Experienced. Independently of gender, patients with non-anatomical causes of infertility scored poorly than patients with anatomical causes of infertility on the relational subscale of the Fertility Quality of Life and on the Avoidant scale of the Brief Coping Orientation to Problem Experienced. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed that higher levels of self-efficacy and a lower use of avoidant coping strategies predicted a more positive quality of life over and above gender and cause of infertility.

CONCLUSION

This study partly confirms data on gender differences in experiencing the psychological burden of infertility and adds some new information, particularly with respect to the prediction of quality of life indicators over and above infertility cause.

Role of mental health in prediction of sexual function in infertile women, Babol, Iran

BACKGROUND

Infertility is one of the main concerns in women's lives that may lead to psychological imbalance and disrupt their sexual relationship. The study was conducted with the aim of evaluating role of mental health in prediction of sexual function in infertile women.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This analytic-descriptive study was conducted in 2015-2016 in 424 infertile women referring to Fatemeh Zahraa Infertility and Reproductive Health Center, Babol, Iran. The participants filled out the Female Sexual Function Index (α = 0.72-0.90), General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28, α = 0.86), and demographics questionnaires. Linear regression used to analyze the data.

RESULTS

The mean of total GHQ was 23.57 ± 12.06. The highest mean of GHQ subscales was social dysfunction (8.68 ± 3.69). There was a negative association between GHQ with the overall sexual function of infertile women (r = -0.397, P < 0.0001). The higher mental health disorder was associated with lower sexual function. Furthermore, there was an inverse significant association between all the subscales of mental health and sexual function. Based on the multiple linear regression analysis, the variables of anxiety and sleep disorder (β = -0.143, P < 0.035), social dysfunction (β= -0.139, P < 0.003), depression symptoms (β = -0.121, P < 0.046), sexual intercourse frequency (β = 0.272, P < 0.0001), and educational level (β = -0.110, P < 0.016) were the significant predictors of perceived sexual dysfunction after adjusting for other variables. The strongest predictor of the GHQ subscale was anxiety and sleep disorder.

CONCLUSIONS

Undesirable conditions of mental health and its adverse effects on sexual function and also other predictors emphasize the need to develop more effective screening and supportive strategies with the help of the psychologists.

Infertility-Related Stress and Psychological Health Outcomes in Infertile Couples Undergoing Medical Treatments: Testing a Multi-dimensional Model

The study aims to propose and test a multi-dimensional infertility-related stress model including socio-demographic and fertility-related characteristics, infertility-related stress dimensions, coping strategies and couple's dyadic adjustment dimensions as predictors of anxiety and depression among partners of couples undergoing infertility treatments. Both members of 250 infertile couples filled out a questionnaire consisting of Socio-demographics (Age; Educational level; Employment status), Fertility-related characteristics (Type of diagnosis; Duration of infertility), Fertility Problem Inventory-Short Form, Coping Orientations to Problem Experienced-New Italian Version, Dyadic Adjustment Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-Y and Edinburgh Depression Scale. Hierarchical Multiple Linear Regressions indicated that the proposed predictive models for anxiety and depression were significant and had good levels of fit with the data. Gender differences emerged in predictor variables. Findings provide valid predictive models that could be adopted to assess psychological health in infertile patients and to develop evidence-based and tailored counselling interventions at centres for assisted reproduction.

Relationship between coping/attachment styles and infertility-specific distress in Iranian infertile individuals: A cross-sectional study

Background

Infertility has been recognized as a stressful clinical condition, significantly affecting couples' emotional functioning.

Objective

To investigate the relationship between coping/attachment styles and infertility-specific distress (ISD) in infertile participants.

Materials and Methods

Atotal number of 240 infertile participants (120 women and 120 men) who attend the Outpatient Infertility Clinic in Sari, Iran between February and October 2017 were selected using the convenience sampling method. Data were collected using a questionnaire addressing sociodemographic variables. In addition, coping and attachment styles were evaluated via the Coping Strategies Questionnaire and the Revised Adult Attachment Scale by Collins and Read (1990); respectively. Ultimately, the Infertility Distress Scale was used to assess ISD.

Results

The mean ISD score was 42.53 ± 9.63. Secure and insecure attachment styles were observed in 37.9% and 62.1% of the cases, respectively. There was a significant difference among ISD and different groups of attachment styles (p = 0.001) and emotion-focused coping style (p = 0.021). However, no significant relationship was found between problem-focused coping style and ISD (p = 0.985).

Conclusion

Considering the relationship between coping/attachment styles and ISD, it was recommended to implement stress prevention and coping education within the framework of coping/attachment theories for infertile individuals.

Two-Year Follow-Up of the Efficacy of the PREP Training on Iranian Newlyweds

The aim of the present study was to replicate the efficacy of the Prevention and Relationship Education Program (PREP) training on marital satisfaction and dyadic adjustment among a group of Iranian newlyweds. One hundred and sixty heterosexual couples (N = 320 participants) were randomly assigned to an experimental or a wait list control group. Data from one hundred and forty-eight couples were analyzed. Participants completed the ENRICH Marital Satisfaction Scale (The Family Journal, 1, 1993, 196-207) and Dyadic Adjustment Scale (The Journal of Sex Research, 39, 1976, 190-196) at pretest, posttest, 1-year follow-up, and 2-year follow-up. Results indicated that mean marital satisfaction and dyadic adjustment scores between the experimental and control groups were significantly different at posttest. Therefore, PREP training improved marital satisfaction and dyadic adjustment of couples at posttest. The data suggests that PREP training program can be introduced as an effective relationship education program for Iranian newlyweds.

Gender role conflict: Is it a predictor of marital dissatisfaction? A cross sectional study in Tehran

Background: Gender role, sex-oriented attitudes, behaviors, cognitions, and emotions play an essential role in interpersonal relationships. Along with other factors, marital relationships and satisfaction can also be affected by a person’s gender role. The increased rate of divorce is related to a decrease in marital satisfaction. The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictor power of gender role conflict on marital satisfaction considering the role of demographic variables (age, income, number of children, and number of family members), marriage-related factors (duration of the marriage, family functioning), and mental health disorder.

Methods: This was a cross sectional study. Participants were selected from couples who were attending West of Tehran health center. A total of 123 married couples aged 18 to 60 years who did not have mental or other medical disorders were recruited. Data gathering tools were McMaster Family Assessment Device (FAD), ENRICH Marital Satisfaction Scale, Bem Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI), a sociodemographic questionnaire, and Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI). Pearson correlation, chi-square, t test, ANOVA, Scheffe post hoc, and linear regression tests were used to analyze the data. Data were analyzed using SPSS 16, and in all statistical tests, significance level was set at p<0.05.

Results: No significant correlations were observed between marital satisfaction and age, number of family members, duration of the marriage, number of children, and income (p>0.05). The presence of gender role conflict was correlated with lower marital satisfaction. Family functioning, gender role conflict, and presence of psychotic problems were predictors of marital satisfaction (p<0.001, R2=0.419).

Conclusion: Screening couples who applied for divorce due to psychiatric problems and gender role conflict and evaluating their family functioning may have a positive effect on reduction of divorce rate.

Sexual Satisfaction Among Infertile Couples: Demographics and Psychosocial Health Factors

The purpose of the current study was to explore sexual satisfaction among infertile couples in Jordan and its associations with psychosocial and sociodemographic factors. Using a descriptive correlational design, 248 infertile couples from outpatient clinics were recruited and filled out a questionnaire on sexual satisfaction, in addition to perceived social support, depressive symptoms, psychological stress, coping skills, optimism, life satisfaction, and sociodemographics. Sexual satisfaction was significantly and positively correlated with perceived social support, optimism, life satisfaction, and coping. Stronger association was observed between sexual satisfaction and optimism. No difference was found in sexual satisfaction in relation to participants' gender, age, working status, or education. This study highlights the importance of building mental health nurses' competence to provide education and counseling on sexuality to improve the quality of life of infertile couples and optimize their sexual wellness. Examining the Role of Dyadic Coping on the Marital Adjustment of Couples Undergoing Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART)

A couple is considered to be infertile if unable to conceive after 12 months of unprotected sexual intercourse. An extended body of literature supports that infertility and infertility treatments contribute to emotional, social, sexual, and relational issues that can have a negative impact on each partner's well-being and on the couple relationship. Recent findings suggest that a dyadic approach should be used when working with couples coping with these stressors. However, most research to date has focused on the association between infertility and individual's psychological outcomes, rather than on the experience of infertility-related stress and coping from a relational perspective. Consequently, assuming that infertility is a dyadic stressor and that the ability of the partners to cope with this experience is the result of both individual and relational coping strategies, this study aimed to investigate dyadic coping and marital adjustment among couples at the beginning of an Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) treatment. A sample of 167 heterosexual couples (N = 334) undergoing ART treatment at the fertility clinic of a large hospital in Milan from January to December 2017 was recruited. Each participant completed self-reported questionnaires examining marital adjustment (Dyadic Adjustment Scale) and dyadic coping (Dyadic Coping Questionnaire). Demographics and clinical variables were also collected. Data were analyzed using the Actor Partner Interdependence Model (APIM), testing the effect of each partner's dyadic coping style on their own and their partner's marital adjustment. Results revealed that both women and partners' scores on positive dyadic coping styles (common, emotion-focused, problem-focused, and delegated dyadic coping) contributed to higher marital adjustment. This result suggests that couples unable to engage in this type of reciprocal supportive behaviors and those unsatisfied with their coping efforts may be more vulnerable while undergoing ART treatments. Furthermore, findings highlighted some gender differences for stress communication and negative dyadic coping suggesting the presence of specific dynamics within couples facing an ART treatment. Implications for clinical practice and future research are discussed.

Application of the dyadic data analysis in behavioral medicine research: marital satisfaction and anxiety in infertile couples

BACKGROUND

Dyadic data analysis (DDA) is increasingly being used to better understand, analyze and model intra- and inter-personal mechanisms of health in various types of dyads such as husband-wife, caregiver-patient, doctor-patient, and parent-child. A key strength of the DDA is its flexibility to take the nonindependence available in the dyads into account. In this article, we illustrate the value of using DDA to examine how anxiety is associated with marital satisfaction in infertile couples.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study included 141 infertile couples from a referral infertility clinic in Tehran, Iran between February and May 2017. Anxiety and marital satisfaction were measured by the anxiety subscale of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and 10-Item ENRICH Marital Satisfaction Scale, respectively. We apply and compare tree different dyadic models to explore the effect of anxiety on marital satisfaction, including the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM), Mutual Influence Model (MIM), and Common Fate Model (CFM).

RESULTS

This study demonstrated a practical application of the dyadic models. These dyadic models provide results that appear to give different interpretations of the data. The APIM analysis revealed that both men's and women's anxiety excreted an actor effect on their own marital satisfaction. In addition, women's anxiety exerted a significant partner effect on their husbands' marital satisfaction. In MIM analysis, in addition to significant actor effects of anxiety on marital satisfaction, women's reports of marital satisfaction significantly predicted men's marital satisfaction. The CFM analysis revealed that higher couple anxiety scores predicted lower couple marital satisfaction scores.

CONCLUSION

In sum, the study highlights the usefulness of DDA to explore and test the phenomena with inherently dyadic nature. With regard to our empirical data, the findings confirmed that marital satisfaction was influenced by anxiety in infertile couples at both individual and dyadic level; thus, interventions to improve marital satisfaction should include both men and women. In addition, future studies should consider using DDA when dyadic data are available.

Marital functioning and treatment outcome in couples undergoing assisted reproduction

AIM

To investigate the relationship between the quality of marital functioning and communication, individual psychological symptomatology, and pregnancy achievement in couples undergoing assisted reproduction.

BACKGROUND

The results concerning marital functioning and the feasibility of pregnancy yield contradictory outcomes and the quality of the relationship of the couple undergoing assisted reproduction has not been analysed from systemic models. Our hypothesis is that when undergoing assisted reproduction treatment (ART), the couple's functioning and communication will be related to the pregnancy rate.

DESIGN

This study employs a cross-sectional design with couples receiving ART.

METHODS

Spanish heterosexual couples (N = 185) completed the self-report instruments. The data were collected from 2010 - 2015. All the couples completed at least one treatment process, or at least 1 year had gone by since beginning the treatment.

RESULTS

The association between couple relationship quality and the individual psychological symptomatology experienced during the assisted reproduction process was confirmed in men and women. Although both members of the couple experienced an increase of symptomatology, only men's symptomatology was statistically significantly linked to pregnancy achievement.

CONCLUSION

It is necessary to support the couple from the assisted reproduction centres, promoting cohesion, flexibility, and communication in the relationship. The intervention process should also be understood from a systemic perspective; that is, considering dyadic transactions as a systemic unit. Two aspects seem to be especially relevant for clinical nurses in ART: (a) the man's role is crucial for treatment success; (b) the woman's communication is crucial to the process.

Relationship between Health Literacy and Sexual Function and Sexual Satisfaction in Infertile Couples Referred to The Royan Institute

Background

Health science and technology today is a rapidly growing field. Health is a multifaceted concept influ- enced by several factors, and health literacy is essential to deal properly with the current situation. In this study, the association between health literacy and sexual function and sexual satisfaction were investigated in 2016.

Materials and Methods

This descriptive and correlational study was conducted on 193 couples in the Royan Insti- tute, Tehran. Data collection instruments were three standard questionnaires which included the Test of Functional Health Literacy, the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) and the International Index of Erectile Function, and the Iranian version of the Sexual Satisfaction Scale. The data were analyzed using SPSS-v23 software at a significance level of 0.05.

Results

Marginal health literacy, 49.7% among men and 44.1% among women, was more common than adequate or inadequate health literacy. Erectile function for the majority of men was appropriate (53.3%), compared to 16.6% who had perfect function and 30.1% for whom function was less than appropriate. The majority of women (57.0%) had sexual dysfunction. One hundred and three (53.3%) men had appropriate sexual function and 57% of women had normal sexual function. The greater proportion of men (50.8%) and women (46.1%) had good, rather than very good or less than good, sexual satisfaction. The results of chi-square tests indicated that greater health literacy was associ- ated with higher levels of sexual function and sexual satisfaction among men and women. However, application of the Cramer’s V test indicates that the strength of these associations is moderate to weak.

Conclusion

Health literacy was marginal among most couples and its adverse impacts on sexual function and sexual satisfaction were confirmed. Accordingly, it is recommended that plans be developed to promote health literacy among infertile couples.

Related factors of violence against women with infertility: A systematic review study based on an ecological approach

Background and aim

Infertility as a global problem, affects the different aspects of women’s health. Also, violence against infertile women affects their psychological wellbeing and treatment consequence. This study aimed at reviewing related factors to violence against infertile women, based on an ecological approach.

Methods

In this systematic review, the researchers conducted their search in electronic databases such as Google Scholar, and then in more specialized ones such as Medline via PubMed, Science Direct, Up-to-date, Springer, SID, Magiran, Iranmedex and Irandoc with the key words violence, infertility, women, risk factors, social environment, and individuality, from 1988 to 2016. The selection of papers was undertaken from 20–27 January 2017. The articles were selected based on the following criteria: 1), the articles focused on the research question 2), infertility and violence were included in the title of the articles, and 3) articles were published in online journals. Exclusion criteria were articles which focused on violence against the general population, pregnant women and female sex workers and articles that were not available in full text form or written in other languages (Not Persian or English). The quality of selected studies was appraised using a 16-item checklist adapted from Tao. This checklist consisted of 16 items which used a 0 or 1 scoring system (not eligible or eligible). If an article received a score of 75% (12–16 points), it was of high quality. A score of 50% to 74% (8–12 points) indicated moderate quality, and less than 50% (8 points) indicated low quality. The process of titles, abstracts and full-texts’ appraisal led to the selection of 16 articles, which were used to write this article

Results

Two of the articles based on 16-items of the check list had high quality score, 8 of them had moderate and the remaining articles had low quality score. Our findings were classified under three categories corresponding with the ecological approach: (1) Microsystem level “individual sociodemographic and infertility characteristics”, (2) Mesosystem level “interpersonal’ and husband sociodemographic characteristics” and (3) Macro system level considered ethnicity and cultural factors.

Conclusion

Violence against infertile women and the stress caused by it, would affect the consequences of infertility treatment. It is noted that various cultural-contextual factors cause violence in different societies. There is a need for the development of screening tools and applying counselors to identify infertile women at the risk of violence, and provide clinical services, counseling and social support.

Factors Influencing Body Image in Women with Breast Cancer: A Comprehensive Literature Review

Context

Many psycho-socioeconomic and other types factors associated with cancer, the treatment process, and changes in patients’ physical appearance and sexual function influence the body image of women with breast cancer. The purpose of this study was to determine which factors influence the body image of women with breast cancer.

Data Collection

A narrative literature review was conducted. Electronic databases, including Google Scholar, SID, Magiran, IranDoc, Barekat, Web of Science, Science Direct, Cochrane Library, ProQuest, Scopus, and PubMed, including Medline, were searched to retrieve articles published from 1993 to 2016 using the keywords breast cancer, treatment, body image, and related factors. The quality of selected studies was appraised using a checklist adapted from Samadaee-Gelehkolaee (2016).

Results

Of 690 articles retrieved in the search, 190 articles were selected for full text appraisal. Finally, 44 articles were selected for data analysis. The results were classified under three headings: bio-psycho-socioeconomic factors, factors associated with the disease and treatment processes, and physical appearance and sexual function.

Conclusions

The findings of this review showed that many factors can influence the body image of women suffering from breast cancer. These factors were predictors of patients’ inter-personal and intra-personal relationships with their partners and others who influenced various other aspects of their lives, possibly leading to many life’s issues. These factors must be identified and considered to make the most appropriate decisions for patients. The strength of this study lies in the exploration of factors influencing the body image of women with breast cancer which earlier studies did not consider. Moreover, the authors believe that this research has addressed nearly all the factors that are real concerns in the body image of women with breast cancer.
