Abstract
Introduction Available literature has found an association between firefighting and pathologic pathways leading to cardiorespiratory diseases, which have been linked with exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). PAHs are highlighted as priority pollutants by the European Human Biomonitoring Initiative in occupational and non-occupational contexts. Methods This cross-sectional study is the first to simultaneously characterize six creatinine-adjusted PAHs metabolites (OHPAHs) in urine, blood pressure, cardiac frequency, and hemogram parameters among wildland firefighters without occupational exposure to fire emissions (> 7 days), while exploring several variables retrieved via questionnaires. Results Overall, baseline levels for total OHPAHs levels were 2 to 23-times superior to the general population, whereas individual metabolites remained below the general population median range (except for 1-hydroxynaphthalene+1-hydroxyacenaphtene). Exposure to gaseous pollutants and/or particulate matter during work-shift was associated with a 3.5-fold increase in total OHPAHs levels. Firefighters who smoke presented 3-times higher total concentration of OHPAHs than non-smokers (p < 0.001); non-smoker females presented 2-fold lower total OHPAHs (p = 0.049) than males. 1-hydroxypyrene was below the recommended occupational biological exposure value (2.5 μg/L), and the metabolite of carcinogenic PAH (benzo(a)pyrene) was not detected. Blood pressure was above 120/80 mmHg in 71% of subjects. Firefighters from the permanent intervention team presented significantly increased systolic pressure than those who performed other functions (p = 0.034). Tobacco consumption was significantly associated with higher basophils (p = 0.01-0.02) and hematocrit (p = 0.03). No association between OHPAHs and blood pressure was found. OHPAHs concentrations were positively correlated with monocyte, basophils, large immune cells, atypical lymphocytes, and mean corpuscular volume, which were stronger among smokers. Nevertheless, inverse associations were observed between fluorene and pyrene metabolites with neutrophils and eosinophils, respectively, in non-smokers. Hemogram was negatively affected by overworking and lower physical activity. Conclusion This study suggests possible associations between urinary PAHs metabolites and health parameters in firefighters, that should be further assessed in larger groups.

Abstract
Objective Breast cancer is the second most common malignancy globally and a leading cause of cancer death in women. Analysis of factors related to disease-free survival (DFS) has improved understanding of the disease and characteristics related to recurrence. The aim of this study was to investigate the predictors of DFS in patients with breast cancer to enable the identification of patients at high risk who may benefit from prevention interventions. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 559 women with breast cancer who underwent treatment between 2004 and 2022. The study endpoint was DFS. Recurrence was defined as local recurrence, regional recurrence, distant metastases, contralateral breast cancer, other second primary cancer, and death. Baseline tumor-related characteristics, treatment-related characteristics, sociodemographic and biochemical data were analyzed using Cox proportional hazards analysis. Results The median DFS was 45 months (range, 2 to 225 months). Breast cancer recurred in 86 patients (15.4%), of whom 10 had local recurrence, 10 had regional recurrence, 17 had contralateral breast cancer, 29 had distant metastases, 10 had second primary cancer, and 10 patients died. Multivariate forward stepwise Cox regression analysis showed that AJCC stage III, Ki67 ≥14%, albumin, platelet, and red cell distribution width-standard deviation (RDW-SD) were predictors of worse DFS. In addition, the effects of albumin, platelet, and RDW-SD on disease recurrence were confirmed by structural equation model (SEM) analysis. Conclusion In addition to the traditional predictors of worse DFS such as AJCC stage III and Ki67 ≥14%, lower pretreatment circulating albumin, higher pretreatment circulating platelet count and RDW-SD could significantly predict worse DFS in this study, and SEM delineated possible causal pathways and inter-relationships of albumin, platelet, and RDW-SD contributing to the disease recurrence among Chinese women with breast cancer.

Abstract
A method for the analysis of essential metals (Fe, Cu, Mg, and Zn) and non-metals (P, S) in single red blood cells was developed by single cell (SC)-ICP-MS. The use of a triple quadrupole configuration (MS/MS) enabled an effective elimination of polyatomic interferences, which affect the accuracy of ICP-MS analysis using a single quadrupole mass analyzer. Fixation with glutaraldehyde for at least 90 days was developed to improve the quantification of elements in a single red blood cell. The experimental conditions were optimized while special attention was paid to the residence time of analytes in the plasma. Addition of a surfactant (0.05% (v/v) Tween80®) improved quantification of elements in fixed red blood cells. The detection limits obtained by SC-ICP-MS/MS were lower than for ICP-MS, especially for S and P (3 fg and 1.7 fg. cell-1 instead of 163 and 6.3 fg. cell-1, respectively).

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of cigarette smoke inhalation (CSI) on inflammation, pro-inflammatory mediators and haematological parameters in rats with induced apical periodontitis (AP). METHODOLOGY Thirty-two 3-month-old male Wistar rats were divided into four experimental groups (n = 8): C-Control; S-rats with CSI; AP-rats with AP; and SAP-rats with CSI + AP. Animals in groups S and SAP inhaled cigarette smoke by remaining inside a smoking chamber for 8 min, three times daily, for 50 days. After 20 days of smoke inhalation, animals in AP and SAP groups had the pulps of the lower right first molar exposed to oral environment for 30 days to induce AP. In these subsequent 30 days, animals in group S and SAP continued with CSI. On Day 50, animals were euthanized and mandibles were histologically processed to assess inflammatory infiltrate, immunohistochemical interleukins (IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α), and blood samples collected for laboratory analysis. The Mann-Whitney test was performed for non-parametric data and the pairwise analyses of Student's t-test for parametric data, with a significance level of p < .050. RESULTS Inflammatory infiltrate was moderate in AP group and more severe in the SAP (p = .010). The interleukins IL-6, IL-1β and TNF-α were higher in SAP group (p < .001) when compared to the AP group. A greater number of red blood cells (p = .010), haemoglobin (p = .007) and neutrophils (p = .014) were observed in the SAP group in comparison with the AP group. CONCLUSION Cigarette smoke inhalation induced a more severe inflammatory infiltrate, with increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and changes in haematological parameters in rats with induced AP. Thus, CSI aggravated AP, exacerbating the inflammatory response.

Abstract
Background RDW is critical to the clinical diagnosis and progression of ESRD. There is currently little data on the relationship between RDW and ESRD in sub-Saharan Africa. Because of this, the present study evaluates RDW in patients with ESRD and associated factors in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods The hospital-based cross-sectional study design was conducted on a total of 83 patients. RDW, MCV, SCR, BUN, GFR, FBS and serum albumin were determined. Blood pressure (mmHg), weight (kg), height (m), MUAC (cm) and BMI (kg/m2) were also measured. Data entry was via Epi-data version 3.4 and analyzed with SPSS version 26.0. A multivariate logistic regression analysis with a p-value < 0.05 at a 95% confidence interval was used to identify the associated factors of RDW. Results A total of 83 ESRD patients participated, with a response rate of 95.4%. RDW ranged from 15.5% to 23.6% with a mean of 17.40% + 1.46%. Anisocytosis was present in 98.8% of patients. Of 83 patients, 66.3% were hypertensive, 20.5% had diabetes, and the remaining 13.3% had other conditions (glomerulonephritis and peripheral vascular disease). The mean GFR value was 5.20 mL/min/1.73 + 1.58. RDW showed a significant association with GFR (AOR: 4.6, 95% CI [1.27, 20.74], P = 0.047), alcohol consumption (AOR: 13.4, P = 0.012, 95% CI [1.97, 22.62]), recurrent kidney disease (AOR=25.6, P=0.016, 95% CI [1.85, 53.71]) and use of medication (AOR=00.2, P=0.044), 95% CI [0.03, 0.95]). Conclusion RDW showed a significant association with GFR, recurrent kidney disease, alcohol consumption, and medication use in hemodialysis-dependent ESRD patients. The mechanisms of RDW disruption in ESRD patients need further investigation.

Abstract
Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a measure of the change in size of red blood cells and it is used in combination with other hematological parameters for the differential diagnosis of anemias. Recent evidence suggested that the change in RDW level may be a predictive biomarker of morbidity and mortality in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Cardiovascular diseases are the most common cause of death globally as compared to cancer and communicable diseases. Early diagnosis and prompt intervention of these diseases are very important to minimize their complications. Nowadays, the diagnosis of most cardiovascular diseases majorly depends on clinical judgment, electrocardiography and biochemical parameters. Red blood cell distribution width as a new predictive biomarker may play a pivotal role in assessing the severity and progression of CVDs. However, the underlying mechanisms for the association between RDW and CVDs are not clear. A deeper understanding of their association could help the physicians in more careful identification, early prevention, intervention, and treatment to prevent adverse cardiovascular events. This review aims to elaborate on the recent knowledge on the association between RDW and cardiovascular diseases and some possible pathophysiological mechanisms.

Abstract
Patients poisoned with drugs and nonpharmaceutical substances are frequently admitted from the emergency department (ED) to a medical or ICU department. We hypothesized that biomarkers of inflammation and inflammation-related indexes based on the complete blood cell (CBC) count can identify acutely poisoned patients at increased risk for ICU hospitalization and death. We performed a 6-year prospective cohort study on 1548 adult patients. The demographic data, the levels of hs-CRP (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein), CBC, and inflammation-related indexes based on CBC counts were collected upon admission and compared between survivors and nonsurvivors, based on the poison involved. Both a multivariate logistic regression model with only significant univariate predictors and a model including univariate predictors plus each log-transformed inflammation-related indexes for mortality were constructed. The importance of the variables for mortality was graphically represented using the nomogram. hs-CRP (odds ratio (OR), 1.38; 95% CI, 1.16–1.65, p < 0.001 for log-transformed hs-CRP), red cell distribution width (RDW), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were significantly associated with the risk of ICU hospitalization, after multivariable adjustment. Only RDW, NLR, and monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) were significantly associated with mortality. The predictive accuracy for mortality of the models which included either NLR (AUC 0.917, 95% CI 0.886-0.948) or MLR (AUC 0.916, 95% CI 0.884-0.948) showed a high ability for prognostic detection. The use of hs-CRP, RDW, NLR, and MLR upon ED admission are promising screening tools for predicting the outcomes of patients acutely intoxicated with undifferentiated poisons.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We have previously shown that panoramic X-rays (PXs) demonstrating calcified carotid artery atheromas (CCAA) are associated with increased systemic inflammation demonstrating increased neutrophil lymphocyte ratios (NLRs), a validated risk indicator of fatal myocardial infarctions arising from coronary artery atherosclerosis. Using this same cohort of patients (with minor adjustments because of missing data), we sought to determine if a like association existed between PXs evidencing CCAA and elevated red blood cell distribution width (RDW) given conflicting data as its reliability relative to NLR as a biologic marker of system inflammation. We hypothesized that CCAAs on PXs would simultaneously be associated with both increased NLR and RDW. MATERIALS AND METHODS Investigators implemented a cross-sectional study design. Study sample consisted of patient medical records and PXs of white men ≥ 55 years. Two groups (N = 50 each) were constituted, one with atheromas (CCAA+) and without atheromas (CCAA-). The predictor variable was CCAA+ and outcome variables were NLR and RDW. Bootstrapping analysis was employed to analyze the differences in mean NLRs and RDWs between groups since the data was not normally distributed. Statistical significance determined to be ≤ 0.05 for all tests. The Medical Center's Institutional Review Board approved the research protocol. RESULTS A study group of 50 CCAA+ men (mean age 71; range 58-89 years) demonstrated a mean NLR of 2.98 ± 1.38 and an RDW of 13.21 ± 0.85. A control group of 50 CCAA- males (mean age 70 range; 55-91 years) evidenced a mean NLR of 2.38 ± 0.77 and an RDW of 13.16 ± 0.77. Bootstrapping comparison of NLR values evidenced significant (P = 0.008) difference (95% confidence interval of difference of mean: - 0.4272, 0.4384; observed effect size: 0.579) between groups; however, there was no significant difference in RDW values between the groups. Furthermore, logistic regression modeling demonstrated that for a one unit increase in NLR the odds of being CCAA+ (vs. CCAA-) increases by a factor of 1.659. CONCLUSION The existence of CCAA seen on PXs of elderly white men is associated with significantly (P = 0.008) elevated NLR values but is not associated with increases in RDW.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Higher hemoglobin levels have been associated with an increased risk for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Although the mechanism underlying this association is elusive, smoking has been previously related to both higher hemoglobin concentrations and an increased risk of fibrosis in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. The present study was conducted to investigate formally the interaction among current smoking, hemoglobin levels, and risk for advanced fibrosis in patients with biopsy-proven nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS We examined 433 Turkish patients with biopsy-proven nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Advanced fibrosis (F ≥ 3) was identified on liver biopsy in 80 cases, whereas 84 patients were current smokers. Logistic regression models were used to evaluate the effect of current smoking on risk for advanced fibrosis, after adjusting for the effects of age, sex, BMI, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. RESULTS Preliminary analyses revealed the presence of substantial statistical interaction between current smoking and hemoglobin levels (P < 0.001). In separate multivariable analyses conducted in the entire cohort and in the subgroups of patients with high and low hemoglobin levels (according to median value in the study cohort: 14.4 g/l), current smoking was associated with increased risk for advanced fibrosis in patients with high hemoglobin (odds ratio: 3.32, 95% confidence interval: 1.23-7.21, P < 0.01) but neither in those with low hemoglobin (odds ratio: 0.71, 95% confidence interval: 0.28-1.81, P = 0.52) nor in the entire study cohort (odds ratio: 1.18, 95% confidence interval: 0.73-2.14, P = 0.79). CONCLUSION Hemoglobin acts as a modifier in the association between current smoking and advanced fibrosis in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Abstract
Red cell distribution width (RDW) has been suggested to have a predictive potential for several cardiovascular diseases, but its association with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is unknown. We examined whether RDW is associated with the risk of AAA among 27,260 individuals from the population-based Malmö Diet and Cancer Study cohort. Data of baseline characteristics were collected during 1991–1996. Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) for AAA across quartiles of RDW. During a median follow-up of 21.7 years, 491 subjects developed AAA. After adjustment for other confounding factors, participants in the highest quartile of RDW experienced 61% increased risk of AAA as compared to those with the lowest quartile (HR = 1.61, CI = 1.20, 2.12). RDW showed similar relationship with severe (i.e. ruptured or surgically repaired) AAA or non-severe AAA (adjusted HR 1.58 and 1.60, respectively). The observed association between RDW and AAA risk was significant in current smokers (adjusted HR = 1.68, CI = 1.18, 2.38) but not in former smokers (adjusted HR = 1.13, CI = 0.72, 1.79), or never-smokers (adjusted HR = 1.77, CI = 0.74, 4.22). Elevated RDW is associated with increased future incidence of AAA, however the causal and pathophysiological mechanisms remain to be explored.

Abstract
Purpose
Fish processing by grilling can produce emissions that contain toxic compounds that can have short- and long-term effects on human health. Another study reported that exposure to air pollutants is hematotoxic. The purpose of this paper is to determine the effect of smoke exposure on fish grill results on hematological parameters.
Design/methodology/approach
The subjects of this study were 90 grilled fish sellers, with 32 processed food sellers who did not sell grill food as a control. The hematological analysis was performed using the Hematology Analyzers KX300 instrument.
Findings
The results showed that the mean value of hematological parameters in the test group was higher than the control group except for the number of lymphocytes and mixed cell parameters.
Originality/value
The content of harmful compounds contained in fish grill smoke can increase hematological value in the blood of exposed individuals, which has the potential for health problems and disease progression.

Abstract
AIM A previous study showed significantly greater reductions in number of cigarettes smoked and biomarkers of toxicant and carcinogen exposure in smokers assigned to immediate reduction of nicotine in cigarettes to very low levels versus gradually over time or continued smoking of normal nicotine content cigarettes. This study examines the effects of these approaches on selected biomarkers associated with harmful biological effects. DESIGN Three-arm, randomized controlled trial. SETTING Ten United States academic institutional sites. PARTICIPANTS Daily smokers uninterested in quitting smoking with a mean age of 45.1 [standard deviation (SD) = 13.4)] years and smoking 17.1 (SD = 8.5) cigarettes/day; 43.9% (549 of 1250) female; 60.6% (758 of 1250) white ethnicity. INTERVENTIONS (1) Smoking cigarettes where nicotine content was immediately reduced to very low levels (n = 503); (2) smoking cigarettes where nicotine content was gradually reduced, with dose changes occurring monthly (n = 498); and (3) continued smoking with normal nicotine content cigarettes (n = 249). MEASUREMENTS Smokers were assessed at baseline while smoking their usual brand cigarettes, and again at 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 weeks. Outcomes were areas under the concentration time curve (AUC) for the period of study of biomarkers of inflammation, oxidative stress and hematological parameters. FINDINGS No consistent significant differences were observed across groups (Bayes factors showing data to be insensitive), with the only exception being red blood cell size variability, which was observed to be lower in the immediate versus gradual nicotine reduction [mean difference = -0.11; 95% confidence interval (CI) = -0.18, -0.04, P = 0.004] and normal nicotine control groups (mean difference = - 0.15, 95% CI = -0.23, -0.06, P = 0.001). CONCLUSION It remains unclear whether switching to very low nicotine cigarettes leads to a short-term reduction in biomarkers of tobacco-related harm.

Abstract
Objective Smoking has been proven to increase systemic inflammation in previous studies
using different biomarkers. The eosinophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (ELR),
neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR)
are new indicators of systemic inflammation that are used as predictors of
systemic inflammation, morbidity, and mortality associated with many
diseases. We investigated the effects of smoking on these inflammatory
indicators. Methods In total, 616 consecutive smoking healthy subjects and 387 age-matched
nonsmoking healthy subjects were enrolled. White blood cell counts
(neutrophils, lymphocytes, basophils, eosinophils, and monocytes) were
determined by electrical impedance with an automatic blood cell counting
device. The ELR, LMR, and NLR were calculated based on these cell counts.
Smoking habits of participants were calculated as pack/year. Results The NLR and ELR were significantly higher and the LMR was significantly lower
in smokers than nonsmokers. The pack-years were positively correlated with
the NLR and ELR and negatively correlated with the LMR. Conclusion A high NLR and ELR and low LMR are associated with cigarette smoking and may
be useful indicators of systemic inflammation activity, even in healthy
smokers. Smokers with a high NLR and ELR and low LMR can easily be
identified during routine blood analysis and might benefit from preventive
treatment.

Abstract
The red blood cell distribution width (RDW) obtained from a standard complete blood count (CBC) is a convenient and inexpensive biochemical parameter representing the variability in size of circulating erythrocytes. Over the past few decades, RDW with mean corpuscular volume (MCV) has been used to identify quite a few hematological system diseases including iron-deficiency anemia and bone marrow dysfunction. In recent years, many clinical studies have proved that the alterations of RDW levels may be associated with the incidence and prognosis in many cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases (CVDs). Therefore, early detection and intervention in time of these vascular diseases is critical for delaying their progression. RDW as a new predictive marker and an independent risk factor plays a significant role in assessing the severity and progression of CVDs. However, the mechanisms of the association between RDW and the prognosis of CVDs remain unclear. In this review, we will provide an overview of the representative literatures concerning hypothetical and potential epidemiological associations between RDW and CVDs and discuss the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is accepted as a powerful predictor of outcomes in patients with CVD. AIMS To study RDW in patients with COPD, and to compare the value of this measurement with clinical, echocardiographic, nutritional and laboratory status. Secondly, we aimed to determine the effect of smoking on RDW values in healthy subjects. METHODS One hundred and seventy-five patients with stable COPD and 210 healthy controls were enrolled in the study. Demographic, clinical, nutritional status, echocardiographic, and laboratory characteristics, RDW values were recorded and compared. RESULTS RDW values were higher in the COPD group than in controls (15±2.3% vs. 13.8±2.5%, p<0.001). In COPD patients, RDW levels positively correlated with CRP levels (r=0.27, P<.001), albumin levels (r=0.23, P=.04), right ventricular dysfunction (RVD) (r=0.24, P=.001), pulmonary hypertension (PAH) (r=0.1, P=.02), and presence of CVD (r=0.24, P=.02). In multivariable logistic regression suggested that presence of CVD (4.3; 95% CI: 1.3 to 11; P=.01), and presence of RVD (3.1; 95% CI: 1.7 to 8.3; P=.02) were independently related to elevated RDW levels in COPD patients. In the healthy population, correlations analysis showed only a significant correlation between RDW and cigarette smoking years (r=0.57, P<.001). CONCLUSION RDW is independently associated with CVD and RVD in patients with COPD. In the healthy population, RDW is also associated with smoking status.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Smoking in long term is not only responsible for cancerous changes but is also one of the reasons of altered taste sensation in smokers. These taste changes are hypothesized to be due to reduction in density of fungiform papillae on the dorsum of the tongue. AIM The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between fungiform papillae count, blood Red Cell Distribution Width (RDW) and electrogustometric thresholds in smokers and non-smokers. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fungiform papillae count was assessed using digital photography and imaging software while electrogustometric thresholds were assessed using modified Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation (TENS) machine in 30 smokers and 30 non-smokers. The subjects also underwent RDW evaluation. The data collected was analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient. RESULTS Fungiform papillae counts in smokers were less than those of non-smokers and an inverse relationship was detected between smoking and fungiform papillae count. Electrogustometric thresholds were more in smokers than non-smokers and showed direct relationship with smoking. RDW was significantly more in smokers compared to non-smokers. An inverse relationship was observed between fungiform papillae count and RDW. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that smokers have a high taste threshold because of decrease in the number of fungiform papillae on the tongue and RDW values do show an inverse relationship with fungiform papillae density which depicts subclinical nutritional deficiency bringing atrophic changes in tongue.

Abstract
PURPOSE The association between the red cell distribution width (RDW) and vasospastic angina (VSA) has not been elucidated. We investigated the association of the RDW with the incidence and angiographic subtypes of VSA in Korean patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 460 patients who underwent intracoronary ergonovine provocation tests were consecutively enrolled and classified into two groups: the VSA group (n=147, 32.0%) and non-VSA group (n=313, 68.0%). The subjects were classified into 3 subgroups (tertiles) according to the baseline level of RDW assessed before the angiographic provocation test. RESULTS The VSA group had a higher RDW than the non-VSA group (12.9±0.8% vs. 12.5±0.7%, p=0.013). The high RDW level demonstrated an independent association with the high incidence of VSA [second tertile: hazard ratio (HR) 1.96 (1.13-2.83), third tertile: HR 2.33 (1.22-3.47), all p<0.001]. Moreover, the highest RDW tertile level had a significant association with the prevalence of the mixed-type coronary spasm [HR 1.29 (1.03-1.59), p=0.037]. CONCLUSION The high level of RDW was significantly associated with the prevalence of VSA and the high-risk angiographic subtype of coronary spasm, suggesting that a proactive clinical investigation for VSA could be valuable in Korean patients with an elevated RDW.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Erythrocyte morphology changes not only by primary hematological diseases but also by systemic inflammation, ineffective erythropoiesis and nutritional deficiencies. Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a parameter reflecting erythrocyte morphology. We aimed to investigate the relationship of RDW with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) stages, BODE index and survival in COPD patients. METHODS Medical records of 385 COPD patients between July 2004 and November 2005 were studied retrospectively. Demographic features, BODE index factors and oxygen saturation were recorded. Survival analysis of all patients by 2014 was performed. Measured RDW values at the time of the inclusion were evaluated. RESULTS Mean age of the patients was 65.6±9.6 years. Distribution of the COPD stages of the patients were stage 1: 16%, stage 2: 52%, stage 3: 26%, stage 4: 6%. RDW was found significantly different between stages. The highest RDW was observed in the very severe stage (p<0.001). Median of BODE index was 1 (0-3). As the BODE index increased RDW also increased (p<0.001). When the patients were grouped according to the laboratory upper limit of RDW, survival rate was 31% in the RDW >14.3% group and 75% in the RDW <14.3% group. CONCLUSION The variability in the size of circulating erythrocytes increases as the COPD severity progresses. Therefore, a simple and noninvasive test, such as RDW, might be used as a biomarker in the evaluation of the severity of COPD. At the same time, there seems to be a correlation between the survival of COPD patients and RDW.

Abstract
Background Red cell distribution width (RDW), a measure of the variability in size of circulating erythrocytes, is associated with mortality and adverse outcome in selected populations with cardiovascular disease. It is scarcely known whether RDW is associated with incident myocardial infarction (MI). We aimed to investigate whether RDW was associated with risk of first‐ever MI in a large cohort study with participants recruited from a general population. Methods and Results Baseline characteristics, including RDW, were collected for 25 612 participants in the Tromsø Study in 1994–1995. Incident MI during follow‐up was registered from inclusion through December 31, 2010. Cox regression models were used to calculate hazard ratios with 95% confidence intervals for MI, adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, smoking, hemoglobin, white blood cells, platelets, and other traditional cardiovascular risk factors. A total of 1779 participants experienced a first‐ever MI during a median follow‐up time of 15.8 years. There was a linear association between RDW and risk of MI, for which a 1% increment in RDW was associated with a 13% increased risk (hazard ratio 1.13; 95% CI, 1.07 to 1.19). Participants with RDW above the 95th percentile had 71% higher risk of MI compared with those with RDW in the lowest quintile (hazard ratio 1.71; 95% CI, 1.34 to 2.20). All effect estimates were essentially similar after exclusion of participants with anemia (n=1297) from the analyses. Conclusion RDW is associated with incident MI in a general population independent of anemia and cardiovascular risk factors.

Abstract
Chronic inflammation may be one of the factors that contribute to the development of diabetic nephropathy (DN). However, erythropoiesis, erythrocyte circulatory half-life and erythrocyte deformability may be influenced by inflammation. Thus, red blood cell distribution width (RDW) levels increase in inflammatory conditions. We investigated the RDW values and related factors in patients with uncomplicated type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and diabetic patients with DN. We carried out a retrospective study on patients with type 2 DM admitted to our hospital. Subjects were divided into three groups. Group 1 consisted of healthy subjects. Group 2 consisted of patients with uncomplicated type 2 DM. Patients with various stages of DN were included in Group 3. The RDW values in group 1 subjects were significantly lower than those in group 2 and 3 patients (p<0.05). The RDW values of group 3 patients were higher than those in the other two groups (p<0.05). While the RDW values had positive correlation with blood pressure, serum creatinine, HbA1c, body mass index, proteinuria, platelet (PLT), triglyceride, low density lipoprotein (LDL), total cholesterol (TC), and fasting blood glucose (r values: 0.95, 0.72, 0.56, 0.86, 0.82, 0.76, 0.88, 0.84, 0.88, 0.86, respectively) (p<0.05 for all), there was negative correlation between estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), albumin, high density lipoprotein (HDL) and RDW levels (r values: −0.92, −0. 88, −0.78, respectively) (p value < 0.05 for all).

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to estimate the effects of exposure to chemical compounds on systemic biochemical inflammatory markers in printing industry workers. MATERIAL/METHODS Fifty-eight printing workers from 19 different small- and medium-sized enterprises in the printing sector were investigated. For comparison, 80 healthy workers not subjected to workplace chemicals served as control subjects. RESULTS No significant differences were observed between the printing workers and control subjects with respect to age, BMI, waist circumference/hip circumference ratio, smoking, and alcohol consumption. Printing workers had significantly higher serum TNF-alpha levels (11.02 ± 5.34 vs. 9.26 ± 3.87 pg/ml, p=0.039), plasma fibrinogen levels (1.74 ± 0.49 vs. 1.38 ± 0.5 mg/dl, p=0.012), and red blood cell distribution width (RDW-SD) (49.77 ± 3.09 vs. 47.3 ± 2.88 p<0.01) compared to control subjects. CONCLUSIONS Elevation of RDW, serum TNF-alpha, and plasma fibrinogen levels in printing workers may be due to systemic toxic effects of chemical compounds used in this sector. TNF-alpha is an inflammatory cytokine that has a wide spectrum of biological activities, and fibrinogen plays an important role in pathological processes. Some compounds may be carcinogenic or mutagenic. Better designed workplaces and working conditions will help to reduce the hazardous effects of chemical compounds.
