Abstract
The rapid increase in the consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) has become a significant global public health concern. UPFs are typically high in unhealthy fats, refined sugars, sodium, and other additives while being low in proteins, fibers, and other essential nutrients. Their high glycemic index and glycemic load lead to blood sugar spikes, contributing to metabolic dysregulation. Emerging evidence links UPF intake to the development of the cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome and a higher risk of adverse health outcomes, such as all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. The pathophysiological mechanisms likely involve chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, dysregulated lipid metabolism, insulin resistance, immune dysfunction, and gut microbiota disruption. The adverse effects are even more concerning in vulnerable populations, including individuals with chronic kidney disease, kidney failure, and the elderly. This review article explores how UPF intake contributes to chronic diseases across the CKM spectrum, including cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, obesity, and type 2 diabetes mellitus, while also exacerbating frailty and reducing quality of life. The focus goes beyond risks of individual metabolic complications to address the broader health implications of UPFs on the increased prevalence of multiple coexistent non-communicable diseases, frailty, reduced quality of life, meta-inflammation, metabolic memory, and syndemics, which are particularly critical for the aging geriatric population.

Abstract
The biological clocks of the circadian timing system coordinate cellular and physiological processes and synchronize them with daily cycles. While the central clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) is mainly synchronized by the light/dark cycles, the peripheral clocks react to other stimuli, including the feeding/fasting state, nutrients, sleep-wake cycles, and physical activity. During the disruption of circadian rhythms due to genetic mutations or social and occupational obligations, incorrect arrangement between the internal clock system and environmental rhythms leads to the development of obesity. Desynchronization between the central and peripheral clocks by altered timing of food intake and diet composition leads to uncoupling of the peripheral clocks from the central pacemaker and to the development of metabolic disorders. The strong coupling of the SCN to the light-dark cycle creates a situation of misalignment when food is ingested during the "wrong" time of day. Food-anticipatory activity is mediated by a self-sustained circadian timing, and its principal component is a food-entrainable oscillator. Modifying the time of feeding alone greatly affects body weight, whereas ketogenic diet (KD) influences circadian biology, through the modulation of clock gene expression. Night-eating behavior is one of the causes of circadian disruption, and night eaters have compulsive and uncontrolled eating with severe obesity. By contrast, time-restricted eating (TRE) restores circadian rhythms through maintaining an appropriate daily rhythm of the eating-fasting cycle. The hypothalamus has a crucial role in the regulation of energy balance rather than food intake. While circadian locomotor output cycles kaput (CLOCK) expression levels increase with high-fat diet-induced obesity, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha (PPARα) increases the transcriptional level of brain and muscle aryl hydrocarbon receptor nuclear translocator (ARNT)-like 1 (BMAL1) in obese subjects. In this context, effective timing of chronotherapies aiming to correct SCN-driven rhythms depends on an accurate assessment of the SCN phase. In fact, in a multi-oscillator system, local rhythmicity and its disruption reflects the disruption of either local clocks or central clocks, thus imposing rhythmicity on those local tissues, whereas misalignment of peripheral oscillators is due to exosome-based intercellular communication.Consequently, disruption of clock genes results in dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, and obesity, while light exposure during the daytime, food intake during the daytime, and sleeping during the biological night promote circadian alignment between the central and peripheral clocks. Thus, shift work is associated with an increased risk of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases because of unusual eating times as well as unusual light exposure and disruption of the circadian rhythm.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aim to examine the association between ultra-processed foods (UPF) consumption and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk and to identify plasma proteins associated with UPF. METHODS This prospective cohort study included 26,369 participants from the Swedish Malmö Diet and Cancer Study, established in 1991-1996. Dietary intake was assessed using a modified diet history method, and UPF consumption was estimated using the NOVA classification system. A total of 88 selected CVD-related proteins were measured among 4475 subjects. Incident CVD (coronary heart disease and ischemic stroke) was defined as a hospital admission or death through registers. Cox proportional hazards regression models were performed to analyze the associations of UPF intake with risks of CVD. Linear regression models were used to identify the plasma proteins associated with UPF intake. RESULTS During 24.6 years of median follow-up, 6236 participants developed CVD, of whom 3566 developed coronary heart disease and 3272 developed ischemic stroke. The adjusted hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) in the 4th versus 1st quartile of UPF was 1.18 (1.08, 1.29) for CVD, 1.20 (1.07, 1.35) for coronary heart disease, and 1.17 (1.03, 1.32) for ischemic stroke. Plasma proteins interleukin 18, tumor necrosis factor receptor 2, macrophage colony-stimulating factor 1, thrombomodulin, tumor necrosis factor receptor 1, hepatocyte growth factor, stem cell factor, resistin, C-C motif chemokine 3, and endothelial cell-specific molecule 1 were positively associated with UPF after correcting for multiple testing. CONCLUSIONS Our study showed that high UPF intake increased the risk of CVD and was associated with several protein biomarkers. Future studies are warranted to validate these findings and assess the potential pathways between UPF intake and CVD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) (rs3138167) of resistin (RETN) gene is a polymorphism that has been associated with metabolic disorder in obese subjects and its effect on the metabolic response after a dietary intervention has not been evaluated. OBJECTIVE our aim was to analyze the effects of the rs3138167 RETN gene polymorphism on metabolic changes secondary to weight loss with a hypocaloric diet with a Mediterranean pattern. METHOD one thousand and eight Caucasian obese patients were evaluated. Before and after 12 weeks on a hypocaloric diet with Mediterranean pattern, an anthropometric evaluation and a biochemical analysis were performed. The statistical analysis was performed as a dominant model (CC vs CT + TT). RESULTS the values of insulin, HOMA-IR and resistin were higher in T allele carriers than non-T allele carriers in pre- and post-intervention time. In non-T allele carriers, resistin, insulin, HOMA-IR, triglycerides and C-reactive protein levels decreased. The improvement was statistically superior in non-T allele carriers; resistin (-1.2 ± 0.2 ng/dl; p = 0.02), triglycerides (-18.3 ± 4.3 mg/dl; p = 0.02), C-reactive protein (-2.6 ± 0.3 mg/dl; p = 0.02), insulin -4.4 ± 1.9 mUI/l; p = 0.02) and HOMA-IR (-2.1 ± 0.7; p = 0.03). CONCLUSION we report an association of rs3138167 with a worse metabolic response (insulin, HOMA-IR, triglyceride and C-reactive protein) in T allele carriers after weight loss with a hypocaloric diet with Mediterranean pattern.

Abstract
Few studies have analized the effect of vascular risk factors and lifestyle habits affecting the middle age of postmenopausal women on later cognitive performance in old age. We have carried out an observational study to identify those factors and whether they differ from those acting in men. Postmenopausal women and males, both aged 40-60 years old at recruitment, from a community dwelling cohort were included. Data for this study were collected from the first visit at recruitment (2001 to 2005). Participants were interviewed with a questionnaire on their health-related antecedents and underwent a physical exam. The cohort was contacted again for a new presential visit between 2014 and 2015. A semantic verbal fluency test was included in this new visit protocol as a brief measure of cognition. Besides educational attainment, Mediterranean diet adherence 20th percentile (OR = 1.93; 95%CI = 1.07-3.47) and waist to hip ratio 80th percentile (OR = 1.81; 95%CI = 1.10-2,98) were the main factors associated to low semantic fluency performance in postmenopausal women, while declared diabetes mellitus (OR = 2.24; 95%CI = 1.16-4,33), HOMA 2 insulin resistance index (OR = 1.77; 95%CI =1.04-3,02), light physical activity in leisure time (OR = 0.41; 95%CI = 0.19-0,93) and recommended moderate to vigorous physical activity (OR = 2.09; 95%CI = 1.23-3.56) did in men. Factors in middle age that explain semantic verbal fluency in old age are different between postmenopausal women and men. Menopause related fat redistribution may be a precondition for other vascular risk factors. The effect of Mediterranean diet on cognition deserves new specific studies centered on postmenopausal women as group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The SNP (rs7139228) of the RETN gene is a polymorphism that has been associated with metabolic disorder in subjects with obesity, and its effect on metabolic response after dietary intervention has not been evaluated. OBJECTIVE Our objective was to analyse the effects of the polymorphism of the RETN gene rs7139228 on metabolic changes secondary to weight loss with a hypocaloric Mediterranean diet. DESIGN 1000 obese Caucasian patients were evaluated. An anthropometric evaluation and a biochemical analysis were performed before and after 12 weeks of a hypocaloric Mediterranean diet. The statistical analysis was performed as a dominant model (GG vs GA+AA). RESULTS Improvements in anthropometric parameters, leptin levels and systolic blood pressure were similar in both genotype groups. In non- A allele carriers, levels of resistin, insulin, HOMA-IR, triglycerides and C-reactive protein decreased. The improvements were statistically significant in this group; resistin (-1.3+0.1ng/dL: p=0.02), triglycerides (-22.9+4.9mg/dl: p=0.02), CRP (-2.7+0 0.4mg/dl: p=0.02), insulin -6.5+1.8 mIU/L: p=0.02) and HOMA-IR (-2.2+0.8: p=0, 03). In addition, insulin, HOMA-IR and resistin levels were higher in A allele carriers than in non-carriers. Finally, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and hyperglycaemia were higher in A allele carriers, and these percentages only decreased after intervention in non-A allele carriers. CONCLUSION The A rs7139228 allele is associated with a worse metabolic response (insulin, HOMA-IR, triglycerides and CRP) after weight loss with a hypocaloric Mediterranean diet. A non-significant decrease in the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and hyperglycaemia were detected in A allele carriers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Resistin is a proinflammatory adipokine involved in metabolic disorders. Its interplay with hypertriglyceridemia remains to be elucidated. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between resistin (-420C/G) single nucleotide variant (SNV) and metabolic parameters and preference for fried food consumption in hypertriglyceridemia. METHODS The study enrolled 179 hypertriglyceridemic (HTG) and 182 normotriglyceridemic (NTG) patients. Anthropometric measurements, serum resistin, insulin and fasting glucose concentration, a homeostatic model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), triglycerides (TG), cholesterol concentration, and fried food taste preference (FP) or other cooking methods preference (OP) were assessed in the study. Genotyping was performed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. RESULTS HTG and NTG groups did not differ significantly in serum resistin concentration; HTG individuals demonstrated significantly increased serum levels of TG, glucose, total cholesterol (TCH), and HOMA-IR and decreased HDL cholesterol. Resistin, insulin, glucose, HOMA-IR, and cholesterol fractions were similar among particular resistin genotypes in HTG, NTG, FP, or OP groups. TG and TCH concentrations differ significantly among CG and CC genotypes in the FP group. Considering the FP group, GG and CG genotypes appeared more frequently in hyperlipidemic (OR 2.6 95% CI; 1.16-5.82; p = 0.01; significant after Bonferroni correction) than in NTG patients. Multivariable logistic regression models showed that the G allele and CG genotype of SNV (-420C/G), adjusted for selected confounders such as fried food preference, increased the odds of hypertriglyceridemia about twofold. CONCLUSIONS Allele G and CG genotype of resistin SNV (-420C/G) are linked with the preference for fried food taste in hypertriglyceridemic patients.

Abstract
Serum resistin is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that has been described as a risk factor associated with mortality in several clinical sets including type 2 diabetes. Mortality studies in the general population are needed to find out the risk of death associated to this cytokine. In a follow-up study of a cohort of adult population (n = 6636) in Spain over a period of fifteen years (447 deaths/102,255 person-years), serum resistin measurements and death records were obtained. The risks of all-cause deaths, and deaths from cardiovascular and oncological diseases were estimated. Hazard ratios (HR) and its confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using multivariable Cox models, adjusting the effect of 11 traditional risk factors. The risk of all-cause mortality among participants exposed to the highest quintile of resistin was always higher than among those in the lowest quintile (HR varied between 1.55 when smoking was the adjusted factor [95% CI 1.17-2.05], and 1.68 when the adjusted factor was physical activity [95% CI 1.27-2.21]). The maximally adjusted model, accounting for the effect of all traditional factors, corroborated this higher risk of all-cause mortality among people in the highest resistin quintile (HR = 1.52; 95% CI 1.13-2.05). The effect of resistin was even higher for cardiovascular deaths (HR = 2.14; 95% CI 1.13-4.06), being exceeded only by suffering diabetes (HR = 3.04; 95% CI 1.98-4.69) or previous acute coronary syndrome (HR = 3.67; 95% CI 2.18-6.18). This findings corroborate the role of resistin as a risk factor for all-cause (and cardiovascular) death in the general population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present study was devoted to the search for possible associations between various adipokines/cytokines associated with the secretory activity of visceral adipocytes, elevated blood levels of LDL-C and abdominal obesity in people under 45 years. METHODS A population sample of Novosibirsk residents (n = 1415) was divided into deciles based on the levels of LDL-C. The study included 158 people, 87 men and 71 women, who had serum LDL-C levels of ≥4.2 mmol/L. Abdominal obesity was found in 50% of people (54% men, 45% women). By multiplex analysis using the human metabolic hormone V3 panel and the human adipokine magnetic bead panel, levels of adipokines and inflammatory markers were determined on a Luminex MAGPIX flow fluorimeter. RESULTS According to multivariate regression analysis (binary logistic regression), the most significant biomolecules, regardless of other factors, associated with the presence of AO against the background of hyper-LDL-C in young people were leptin (direct association) and lipocalin-2 (reverse association), leptin in young men (direct association), and leptin and TNF-alpha in women (direct association). CONCLUSIONS Thus, in young people under 45 years with the presence of two important, potentially atherogenic risk factors-hyper-LDL-C and abdominal obesity-a complex of adipokines and metabolic hormones were associated with the presence of these diseases.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is characterized by increased pro-oxidative stress and a pro-inflammatory state. Several studies emphasized the protective effect of the Mediterranean dietary pattern (MDP). To assess the oxidative and inflammatory state according to the adherence to MDP using biomarkers in patients with MetS. Antioxidant and pro-inflammatory biomarkers were determined in plasma, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), and neutrophils of adults (aged 55–75 years old; 60% women) with MetS living in Mallorca (Spain). Anthropometrics, dietary intake by a validated semi-quantitative 143-item food frequency questionnaire, and a Dietary Inflammatory Index were measured. Patients with low adherence to MDP showed higher levels of glycated haemoglobin A1c and triglycerides, and lower levels of HDL cholesterol. Plasma levels of interleukin-1β, IL-6, IL-15, tumour necrosis factor α, xanthine oxidase, and ghrelin, and activities of superoxide dismutase, and myeloperoxidase were higher in subjects with low adherence to the MDP. Reactive oxygen species production in PBMCs and neutrophils stimulated with lipopolysaccharide was higher in participants with low adherence to the MDP. Patients with MetS and higher adherence to the MDP showed less altered anthropometric parameters, blood biochemical profile, and better oxidative and inflammatory status.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) can lead to fatal complications, including cardiovascular disease. Emerging evidence suggests has emerged that increased fruit and vegetable intake and decreased intake of saturated fats, simple sugars, and processed foods can improve cardiovascular
health. Anthocyanins (color pigments) have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capacities but are of low bioavailability. In this systematic review and metaanalysis, we investigate the possible beneficial effects of the intake of berries high in anthocyanins on MetS risk factors. We also investigate
the influences of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), lowdensity lipoprotein (LDL), triglycerides (TG), and total cholesterol (TC). METHODS: We identified 2,274 articles from PUBMED and EMBASE following a search input designed to include studies of interest of these, 21 met inclusion criteria.
RESULTS: The studies showed an overall reduction in low-density lipoprotein (p=0.04). Increases in HDL were found with cranberry and freeze-dried berry intake during a 4-6-week intervention. No statistically significant findings were detected for fasting glucose, Hb1Ac, insulin levels,
blood pressure, oxidized LDL (OX-LDL), BMI, and overall HDL. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude from this systematic review and meta-analysis that increased berry intake improves MetS key risk factors and reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease. Pronounced effects were apparent for concentrated
berry products, such as freeze-dried strawberries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) (rs10401670) of the RETN gene has been associated with metabolic disorder in obese subjects and has scarcely been evaluated after dietary interventions. The present study aimed to analyse the effects of the rs10401670 RETN gene polymorphism on metabolic changes secondary to weight loss and secondary to a high-fat hypocaloric diet with a Mediterranean dietary pattern. METHODS A Caucasian population comprising 284 obese patients without diabetes mellitus was analysed. Before and after 3 months of a high-fat hypocaloric diet with a Mediterranean pattern, an anthropometric evaluation, an assessment of nutritional intake and a biochemical analysis were performed. A statistical analysis was conducted for the combined CT and TT as a group and for wild-type CC as a second group. RESULTS Decreases in weight, body mass index (BMI), fat mass, systolic blood pressure and waist circumference were similar in both genotypes groups. In T allele carriers, insulin, homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), triglycerides and C-reactive protein levels were decreased. The decrease in these parameters was statistically significant for triglycerides (-22.3 ± 9.3 mg dl-1 : p = 0.03), C-reactive protein (-2.8 ± 0.5 mg dl-1 : p = 0.03), insulin (-7.4 ± 2.9 mUI L-1 : p = 0.03) and HOMA-IR (-2.4 ± 1.0: p = 0.02). Leptin levels were decreased in both genotypes groups after the hypocaloric diet, as well as the anthropometric parameters BMI, weight, waist circumference and fat mass. Resistin and adiponectin levels remained unchanged in both groups. CONCLUSIONS In the present study, we have detected a significant association between the T allele of this SNP and a better response of insulin resistance, triglycerides and C-reactive protein compared to non T allele carriers after weight loss with a high-fat hypocaloric diet and a Mediterranean diet.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A low-glycemic index (GI) diet may modulate adipocyte-produced adipokines linking to insulin resistance. METHODS The stored plasma samples from the RCT of a low-GI vs. conventional diet in obese children were analyzed for adipokines: leptin, adiponectin, resistin, and visfatin. Their relationships with clinical outcomes were assessed. RESULTS Fifty-two participants completed the 6-month intervention trial (mean age: 12.0 ± 2.0 years, 35 boys). Both groups had significantly decreased BMI z-scores from baseline whereas the low-GI group had significant reduction in fasting insulin and HOMA-IR. There were no differences in adipokines between the groups before and after the intervention. However, there was an association between baseline leptin and the change of fat mass index (FMI) but not the insulin resistance in both groups. The higher the baseline leptin was, the lower the changes were for FMI after the intervention. CONCLUSION Despite no demonstrable effect of low-GI diet on plasma adipokines, the higher baseline leptin was correlated with lower reduction of fat mass. Leptin resistance may have a detrimental effect on the reduction of adiposity in obese children. Baseline leptin could be a useful predictor of the change in body composition in an obesity intervention trial. IMPACT Leptin resistance may have a detrimental effect in reducing the adiposity in obese children. This study is the first of its kind to compare the plasma adipokine concentrations of obese children on low-GI diet and conventional diet. We found that serum leptin was significantly correlated with the reduction of BMI z-score and FMI in both groups. Baseline leptin could be a useful predictor of the change in body composition in an obesity intervention trial.

Abstract
AIM RBP4, Vaspin and omentin-1 are adipokines, which play an important role in the development of obesity-related complications. The main aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different kinds of fat intake on adipokine levels in obese women. METHODS A total of 272 obese women (BMI ≥ 30) were included in the current cross-sectional study, according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Body composition was measured using a body composition analyzer. For the measurement of retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4), vaspin and omentin-1 serum concentrations, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method was used. Dietary intake was assessed using a 3-day 24-h dietary recall. RESULTS Statistically significant differences were found between polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFAs) and linoleic acid intake and vaspin and omentin-1 levels. In addition, there were found statistically significant relationships between cholesterol, monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFAs) and total fat intakes with omentin-1 levels. Also, RBP4 and vaspin levels were different significant with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) intake. Moreover, the results revealed that there were statistically significant differences between RBP4 levels and α-linolenic acid and oleic acid intake. CONCLUSION This study revealed that by examining RBP4, vaspin and omentin-1 as adipokines, a novel link between fat intakes and adipokine levels was found.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the association of leptin, resistin, and tumour necrosis factor α (TNF-α) with prognosis in type 2 diabetes (T2D). METHODS Analysis included 284 T2D patients. Apart from routine laboratory parameters, baseline leptin, resistin, and TNF-α concentrations were measured. Patients were followed for a median of 5.4 years. The primary endpoint was all-cause death at follow-up. The secondary endpoint was a composite of death, acute coronary syndrome, and stroke or transient ischemic attack. RESULTS At baseline, median age was 68 years, and 48% of patients were female. Data on the primary endpoint were obtained for all patients: 32 (11%) died during follow-up. Data on the secondary endpoint were available for 230 patients, of whom 45 (20%) reached the secondary endpoint. In univariate analyses, older age, heart failure, lower-glomerular filtration rate, and higher resistin, TNF-α and NT-proBNP concentrations were predictors of the study endpoints. Of these variables, only resistin remained an independent predictor of both study endpoints in multivariate models. In receiver-operating characteristic analysis, area under the curve for resistin was 0.7. Resistin concentration of greater than or equal to 11.4 ng/mL had sensitivity of 41% and specificity of 91% for prediction of death at follow-up (Youden's index). CONCLUSIONS Higher resistin is associated with reduced survival in T2D, irrespectively of TNF-α. Resistin concentration of above 11 ng/mL indicates T2D patients at an increased risk of unfavourable outcomes. Leptin was not a prognostic factor. These results suggest that in T2D, association of resistin with unfavourable outcomes might, at least in part, result from its pro-inflammatory properties.

Abstract
Despite the abundance of plant-derived fats in our diet, their effects on appetite, and metabolic markers, remain unclear. This single-blinded 3-way cross-over pilot study aimed to investigate the ability of the two most abundant dietary plant-derived fats, oleic (OA) and linoleic (LA) acids, to modulate postprandial appetite and levels of circulating appetite and metabolic regulators in overweight/obese individuals. Meals were a high-carbohydrate control, a high-OA or a high-LA meal, and provided 30% of participants' estimated energy requirements. Meals were consumed after an overnight fast, with blood samples collected over 3¼ h. Appetite parameters were assessed via a validated visual analogue scale questionnaire. Hormones and other circulating factors were quantified using multiplex immunoassays. Eight participants (age 45.8 ± 3.6 (years), body mass index 32.0 ± 1.3 (kg/m²)) completed the study. All meals significantly increased fullness and reduced desire to eat. The control and high-OA meals significantly decreased prospective food intake. The high-LA meal increased ghrelin levels (p < 0.05), a hormone which encourages food intake. This was coupled with a significant acute increase in resistin levels, which impairs insulin signaling. Taken together, this study indicates that in overweight/obese individuals, high-LA meals may promote excess energy intake and alter glucose handling, though a larger cohort may be required to strengthen results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Resistin is secreted by monocytes/macrophages and is associated with insulin resistance, inflammation and cardiovascular diseases. In the Japanese cohort, serum resistin is tightly associated with a single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) at -420 (rs1862513) in the promoter region of the human resistin gene. However, interactions between SNP-420 and environmental factors remain to be elucidated. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between serum resistin levels and nutrient intake, and the effect of SNP-420 on this association. DESIGN, PARTICIPANTS AND MEASUREMENTS The Toon Genome Study is a cohort study of Japanese community-dwelling subjects. A total of 1981 participants were cross-sectionally analysed. Each nutrient intake was assessed using the semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire and categorized into the quartiles (Q1-Q4). Serum resistin was measured by ELISA. RESULTS Serum resistin tended to be inversely associated with fish intake and positively associated with meat intake after adjustment for age, sex, BMI and energy intake. Serum resistin was inversely associated with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) intake after adjustment for age, sex, BMI and energy intake (Q1 12.5, Q2 12.5, Q3 12.2, Q4 11.5 ng/mL; P for trend = .007). This inverse association was strongest in the G/G genotype of SNP-420, followed by C/G and C/C (G/G, Q1 18.9, Q2 19.5, Q3 18.4, Q4 14.5 ng/mL, P = .001; C/G, 14.4, 13.3, 13.1, 12.9, P = .015; C/C, 9.5, 9.5, 9.2, 8.8, P = .020; P for interaction = .004). CONCLUSIONS The inverse association between serum resistin and n-3 PUFA intake was strongest in SNP-420 G/G genotype in the Japanese cohort.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Aging is accompanied by increased susceptibility to infection and age-associated chronic diseases. It is also associated with reduced vaccine responses, which is often attributed to immunosenescence and the functional decline of the immune system. Immunosenescence is characterized by a chronic, low-grade, inflammatory state termed inflammaging. Habitants of Mediterranean (MED) regions maintain good health into old age; often attributed to MED diets. HYPOTHESIS Adoption of a MED-diet by elderly subjects, in Norfolk (UK), may improve immune responses of these individuals and in particular, dendritic cell (DC) function. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH A total of 120 elderly subjects (65-79 years old) recruited onto the Nu-AGE study, a multicenter European dietary study specifically addressing the needs of the elderly, across five countries, and were randomized to the control or MED-diet groups, for one year. Blood samples were taken pre- and post-intervention for DC analysis and were compared with each other, and to samples obtained from 45 young (18-40 years old) subjects. MED-diet compliance was assessed using high performance liquid chromatography-with tandem mass spectrometry analysis of urine samples. Immune cell and DC subset numbers and concentrations of secreted proteins were determined by flow cytometric analysis. RESULTS As expected, reduced myeloid DC numbers were observed in blood samples from elderly subjects compared with young. The elevated secretion of the adipokine, resistin, after ex vivo stimulation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells from elderly subjects, was significantly reduced after MED-diet intervention. CONCLUSION This study provides further evidence of numerical and functional effects of aging on DCs. The MED-diet showed potential to impact on the aging immune cells investigated and could provide an economical approach to address problems associated with our aging population.

Abstract
Aim Resistin is a cytokine related with inflammation and ischemic heart disease. Physical activity (PA) prevents chronic inflammation and ischemic heart disease. We studied the relationship of serum concentration of resistin with HDL cholesterol, a known biomarker of PA, and with different measures of PA, in a large sample of the general adult population in the Canary Islands. Methods Cross-sectional study of 6636 adults recruited randomly. We analyzed the correlation of resistin and HDL cholesterol with PA (as metabolic equivalent level [MET]), and fitted the results with linear and logistic regression models using adjustment for age, alcohol consumption and smoking. Results Mean resistin level was higher in women (p<0.001), correlated inversely with age, HDL cholesterol (p<0.001) and alcohol consumption (p<0.001 in men), and correlated directly with smoking (p<0.001). Resistin correlated inversely with the duration of leisure time PA (p<0.001), leisure time MET (p<0.001) and moderate leisure time PA (p<0.001), with some differences between sexes. Men (OR = 0.78 [0.61–0.99; p<0.05]) and women (OR = 0.75 [0.61–0.92; p<0.01]) in the upper quintile of leisure time PA had a lower risk of elevated resistin. In contrast, a high degree of sedentarism was associated with an increased risk elevated resistin in women (OR = 1.24 [1.04–1.47; p<0.05] and in men (OR = 1.40 [1.01–1.82; p<0.05]). Conclusions In our sample of the general population, resistin was inversely associated with measures and levels of PA and HDL cholesterol. The association of resistin with PA was stronger than the association of HDL cholesterol with PA, making resistin a potentially useful biomarker of PA.

Abstract
Adipose tissue secretes a variety of bioactive substances that are associated with chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus. While resistin was first known as an adipocyte-secreted hormone (adipokine) linked to obesity and insulin resistance in rodents, it is predominantly expressed and secreted by macrophages in humans. Epidemiological and genetic studies indicate that increased resistin levels are associated with the development of insulin resistance, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Resistin also appears to mediate the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis by promoting endothelial dysfunction, vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation, arterial inflammation, and the formation of foam cells. Thus, resistin is predictive of atherosclerosis and poor clinical outcomes in patients with cardiovascular disease and heart failure. Furthermore, recent evidence suggests that resistin is associated with atherogenic dyslipidemia and hypertension. The present review will focus on the role of human resistin in the pathogeneses of inflammation and obesity-related diseases.

Abstract
The biological clocks of the circadian timing system coordinate cellular and physiological processes and synchronizes these with daily cycles, feeding patterns also regulates circadian clocks. The clock genes and adipocytokines show circadian rhythmicity. Dysfunction of these genes are involved in the alteration of these adipokines during the development of obesity. Food availability promotes the stimuli associated with food intake which is a circadian oscillator outside of the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). Its circadian rhythm is arranged with the predictable daily mealtimes. Food anticipatory activity is mediated by a self-sustained circadian timing and its principal component is food entrained oscillator. However, the hypothalamus has a crucial role in the regulation of energy balance rather than food intake. Fatty acids or their metabolites can modulate neuronal activity by brain nutrient-sensing neurons involved in the regulation of energy and glucose homeostasis. The timing of three-meal schedules indicates close association with the plasma levels of insulin and preceding food availability. Desynchronization between the central and peripheral clocks by altered timing of food intake and diet composition can lead to uncoupling of peripheral clocks from the central pacemaker and to the development of metabolic disorders. Metabolic dysfunction is associated with circadian disturbances at both central and peripheral levels and, eventual disruption of circadian clock functioning can lead to obesity. While CLOCK expression levels are increased with high fat diet-induced obesity, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) alpha increases the transcriptional level of brain and muscle ARNT-like 1 (BMAL1) in obese subjects. Consequently, disruption of clock genes results in dyslipidemia, insulin resistance and obesity. Modifying the time of feeding alone can greatly affect body weight. Changes in the circadian clock are associated with temporal alterations in feeding behavior and increased weight gain. Thus, shift work is associated with increased risk for obesity, diabetes and cardio-vascular diseases as a result of unusual eating time and disruption of circadian rhythm.

Abstract
Dyslipidemia, more specifically, high-serum low-density lipoproteins and low-serum high-density lipoproteins, are known risk factors for cardiovascular disease. The current clinical treatment of dyslipidemia represents the outcome of a large body of fundamental basic science research on lipids, lipid metabolism, and the effects of different lipids on cellular components of the artery, inflammatory cells, and platelets. In general, lower density lipids activate intracellular pathways to increase local and systemic inflammation, monocyte adhesion, endothelial cell dysfunction and apoptosis, and smooth muscle cell proliferation, resulting in foam cell formation and genesis of atherosclerotic plaque. In contrast, higher density lipids prevent or attenuate atherosclerosis. This article is part 1 of a 2-part review, with part 1 focusing on lipid metabolism and the downstream effects of lipids on the development of atherosclerosis, and part 2 on the clinical treatment of dyslipidemia and the role of these drugs for patients with arterial disease exclusive of the coronary arteries.

Abstract
Resistin is an adipokine that promotes inflammation and insulin resistance by targeting several cells including platelets. We hypothesised that in type 2 diabetes (T2DM), resistin may foster in vivo oxidative stress, thromboxane-dependent platelet activation and platelet-derived inflammatory proteins release, key determinants of atherothrombosis. A cross-sectional comparison of circulating resistin, sCD40L, as a marker of platelet-mediated inflammation, asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), endothelial dysfunction marker, Dickkopf (DKK)-1, reflecting the inflammatory interaction between platelets and endothelial cells, and urinary 8-iso-PGF2α and 11-dehydro-TxB2, reflecting in vivo lipid peroxidation and platelet activation, respectively, was performed between 79 T2DM patients and 30 healthy subjects. Furthermore, we investigated the effects of the α-glucosidase inhibitor acarbose and the PPARγ agonist rosiglitazone, targeting hyperglycaemia or insulin resistance, versus placebo, in 28 and 18 T2DM subjects, respectively. Age- and gender-adjusted serum resistin levels were significantly higher in patients than in controls. HOMA (β=0.266, p=0.017) and 11-dehydro-TXB2 (β=0.354, p=0.002) independently predicted resistin levels. A 20-week treatment with acarbose was associated with significant reductions (p=0.001) in serum resistin, DKK-1, urinary 11-dehydro-TXB2 and 8-iso-PGF2α with direct correlations between the change in serum resistin and in other variables. A 24-week rosiglitazone treatment on top of metformin was associated with significant decreases in resistin, DKK-1, 11-dehydro-TXB2 and 8-iso-PGF2α, in parallel with HOMA decrease. In conclusion, resistin, antagonising insulin action in part through PPARγ activation, may favour insulin resistance and enhance oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction and platelet activation. The adipokine-platelet interactions may be involved in platelet insulin resistance and their consequent pro-aggregatory phenotype in this setting.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the insulin resistance status in SGA infants at 12 months and its relationship with auxological and metabolic parameters. METHODS One group of 45 SGA and one of 50 appropriate for gestational age infants were followed from birth to the end of the first year of life. At 12 months, skinfold thickness, waist circumference, and blood levels of glucose, insulin, adiponectin, leptin, resistin, visfatin, retinol-binding protein 4, IGFs, lipids profile were determined, and the HOMA-IR index was calculated. RESULTS The SGAs had increased insulin (5.2 ± 2.7 versus 2.9 ± 2.4 μIU/ml, p = 0.012) and HOMA-IR (1.09 ± 0.9 versus 0.59 ± 0.55, p = 0.016). In multiple regression, insulin resistance indices were independently correlated with low-birth-weight (β = -2.92, p = 0.015 for insulin, β = -2.98, p = 0.011 for HOMA-IR) but not with catch-up growth in either height or weight or any other metabolic parameter. Resistin was higher in the SGAs (5.1 ± 2.1 versus 3.9 ± 2.1 ng/ml, p = 0.03) and independently correlated with low-birth-weight but not insulin resistance. Resistin was negatively correlated with total cholesterol (R = -0.33, p = 0.007) and positively with lipoprotein(a) (R = 0.49, p = 0.001). CONCLUSION Low-birth-weight, but not catch-up growth or adiposity tissue hormones, was correlated with insulin resistance at 12 months in non-obese SGA infants. The higher resistin in SGA infants and its correlation with total cholesterol and lipoprotein(a) need further clarification.

Abstract
Background. Maternal metabolic changes impact fetal metabolism resulting in a higher risk for developing chronic diseases later in life. The aim of this study was to assess the association between maternal and fetal adipokine and lipid profiles, as well as the influence of maternal weight on this association. Methods. Healthy pregnant women at term who delivered by C-section were enrolled. Maternal and fetal glucose, lipid profile, adiponectin, leptin, and resistin levels were analyzed by obesity and maternal weight gain. Statistics included descriptives, correlations, and mean differences (SPSS v20.0). Results. Adiponectin and resistin concentrations were higher in fetal blood, while leptin was lower (p < 0.05). A significant inverse association between maternal resistin and fetal LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) (r = -0.327; p = 0.022) was observed. A positive correlation was found between maternal and fetal resistin (r = 0.358; p = 0.013). Women with excessive weight gain had higher leptin levels and their fetuses showed higher LDL-C levels (p < 0.05). Conclusions. Maternal resistin showed an inverse association with fetal LDL-C, suggesting that maternal adiposity status may play an active role in the regulation of fetal lipid profile and consequently, in fetal programming. Excessive maternal weight gain during pregnancy may exert an effect over metabolic mediators in both mother and newborn.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Previous studies have implicated a strong link between circulating plasma resistin and coronary artery disease (CAD). The aim of this study was to evaluate the differences in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) resistin mRNA and its plasma protein concentrations between the patients with CAD of different clinical severity. MATERIAL AND METHODS This study included 33 healthy subjects as the control group (CG) and 77 patients requiring coronary angiography. Of the latter 30 was CAD negative whereas 47 were CAD positive [18 with stable angina pectoris (SAP) and 29 with acute coronary syndrome (ACS)]. Circulating resistin was measured by ELISA; PBMC resistin mRNA was determined by real-time PCR. RESULTS Resistin protein was significantly higher in the ACS group compared to the CG (P=0.001) and the CAD negative group (P=0.018). Resistin mRNA expression did not vary across the study groups, despite the positive correlation seen with plasma resistin (ρ=0.305, P=0.008). In patients, plasma resistin and PBMC resistin mRNA negatively correlated with HDL-C (ρ=-0.404, P<0.001 and ρ=-0.257, P=0.032, respectively). Furthermore, the highest plasma resistin tertile showed the lowest HDL-C (P=0.006). Plasma resistin was positively associated with serum creatinine (ρ=0.353, P=0.002). CONCLUSION Significant increase of plasma resistin in patients with ACS compared to CG and CAD negative patients was observed. Despite no change in PBMC resistin mRNA in different disease conditions a positive association between resistin mRNA and resistin plasma protein was evident. Both plasma resistin and PBMC resistin mRNA were negatively associated with plasma HDL-C, and plasma resistin positively with serum creatinine.

Abstract
Background Resistin is a circulating adipokine with insulin-antagonizing effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) -420C > G in the resistin gene with serum resistin levels, insulin resistance, and risk of gestational diabetes (GDM) in Iranian population. Method 75 GDM patients and 70 healthy pregnant women were enrolled in this study. Genotyping for SNP- 420C > G in the resistin gene was performed by the polymerase chain reaction- restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. Serum resistin and insulin were measured by immunoassay. Blood glucose levels and lipid profile were measured by enzymatic methods. Homeostasis model of assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were calculated. Result GG genotype and G allele of SNP-420C > G were more frequent in GDM patients compared to non-GDM subjects. Serum resistin level was similar in GDM and non-GDM patients. The serum levels of resistin in GDM and non-GDM women with GG genotype were similar to those with GC + CC genotype. Multivariate logistic regression analysis after adjusting for confounding factors showed a higher susceptibility to GDM in patients with GG genotype compared to subjects with GG + GT genotype (odds ratio = 4.59, 95% CI; 1.96-10.71, p = 0.00). Serum resistin level was correlated with serum triglyceride, total and low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (p < 0.05) in GDM patients. No significant association was found between serum resistin, insulin resistance, and SNP-420C > G. Conclusion The SNP-420C/G of resistin gene is associated with genetic susceptibility to GDM in our population. Further studies are necessary to confirm the role of this polymorphism in pathogenesis of GDM and to explore potential mechanisms by which it modulates susceptibility to GDM.

Abstract
Adipose tissue is recognized as an endocrine organ that secretes bioactive substances known as adipokines. Excess adipose tissue and adipose tissue dysfunction lead to dysregulated adipokine production that can contribute to the development of obesity-related co-morbidities. Among the various adipokines, resistin, which was initially considered as a determinant of the emergence of insulin resistance in obesity, has appeared as an important link between obesity and inflammatory processes. Several experimental and clinical studies have suggested an association between increased resistin levels and severe conditions associated with obesity such as cardiovascular disease and malignancies. In this review, we present the growing body of evidence that human resistin is an inflammatory biomarker and potential mediator of obesity-associated diseases. A common pathway seems to involve the combined alteration of immune and inflammatory processes that favor metabolic disturbances, atherosclerosis and carcinogenesis. The mode of action and the signaling pathways utilized by resistin in its interactions with target cells could involve oxidative and nitrosative stress. Therefore, resistin could function as a key molecule in the complications of obesity development and could potentially be used as a diagnostic and prognostic marker.
