Abstract
Obesity, which is characterized by excessive body fat accumulation and energy imbalance, is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus. Boesenbergia rotunda rhizomes (known as fingerroots) exhibit a variety of pharmacological activities and are used in traditional medicine. Pinostrobin was identified as a major constituent of Boesenbergia rotunda rhizome (BR) extract and suppressed nitric oxide production in interleukin 1β-treated hepatocytes. Next, we investigated the anti-obesity effects of BR extract in ob/ob mice, a type 2 diabetes mellitus model. The ob/ob mice were treated with or without 1% BR extract for 14 days and then analyzed for serum insulin and triglyceride levels, liver histology, and liver mRNA expression. The administration of BR extract significantly decreased blood glucose concentrations and increased serum insulin concentrations in ob/ob mice. In addition, this treatment reduced triglyceride levels in both the serum and liver and decreased lipid accumulation in hepatocytes. Microarray analysis revealed that hepatic mRNA affected the expression of genes involved in inflammation, lipid metabolism, lipid synthesis, and insulin signaling, leading to improvements in obesity. Because BR extract has hypoglycemic and antidiabetic effects on ob/ob mice, it might be a promising candidate for addressing obesity and related metabolic disorders.

Abstract
Recently, "mature" silkworms (MS) of Bombix mori have been considered a potential nutraceutical, with a number of health benefits reported for steamed and lyophilized MS powder (SMSP). However, no obesity-related effects have been reported for SMSP. In the present study, anti-obesity effects of SMSP were investigated in adult mice in vivo, aged 12 weeks at the onset of SMSP treatment, fed a normal diet (ND) and a high-fat diet (HFD), respectively, for 12 weeks. SMSP significantly suppressed body weight gain, intra-abdominal adipose tissue, and food efficiency in both ND-fed and HFD-fed adult mice. In addition, SMSP significantly decreased food intake and liver weight in HFD-fed mice, indicating that SMSP suppressed appetite and simultaneously reduced the conversion of feed into body weight in HFD-fed mice. SMSP also significantly lowered the serum levels of glucose, triglyceride, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, asparagine transaminase, alanine transaminase, and alkaline phosphatase. However, SMSP had no significant effect on the weights of the kidney, spleen, or thymus or the serum levels of blood urea nitrogen and creatinine. Taken together, the above results suggest that SMSP has potent anti-obesity effects and is safe for long-term use as a potential therapeutic and/or nutraceutical in both obese patients and non-obese individuals.

Abstract
Background Previous animal study has shown that supplementation with silk amino
acid hydrolysate (SAA) increases stamina in mice. The presented study was the
first formal evaluation of the influence of SAA supplementation on parameters
defining physiological fitness level in humans. Methods It was a randomized controlled trial with a parallel-group design on
elite male fin-swimmers. The experimental group was supplemented with 500 mg of
SAA per kg of body mass, dissolved in 250 ml of a Carborade Drink®; the control
group with Carborade Drink® alone; 3 times a day, 30 minutes prior to the training
session. Results Changes discerned in the experimental group were more pronounced
than those observed in the control group. For example, the change in the serum
lactic acid concentration observed in the experimental group was sevenfold less
than in the control group [21.8 vs. -3.7 L% for the control and experimental
groups, respectively]. An analysis of a lactate profile as a function of a maximal
swimming velocity exposed a statistically significant positive shift in the
swimming velocity of 0.05 m/s, at the lactate concentration of 4 mmol/L in the
experimental group. There was also a positive, although statistically
insignificant, increase of 2.6 L% in serum testosterone levels in the experimental
group. Conclusions This study showed that a 12-day SAA supplementation combined with an
extensive and rigorous training schedule was sufficient to increase an aerobic
stamina. However, this phenomenon was associated with an augmented level of
muscular damage (an increased level of creatine phosphokinase in the experimental
group).

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), consisting mainly of ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), are important immune-mediated diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. The etiology of the disease includes environmental and genetic factors. Its management presents a constant challenge for gastroenterologists and conventional surgeon. 5-Amninosalicylates, antibiotics, steroids, and immune modulators have been used to reduce the symptoms and for maintenance of remission. Unfortunately, long-term usage of these agents has been found to lead to severe toxicities, which are deterrent to the users. Pre-clinical studies carried out in the recent past have shown that certain dietary agents, spices, oils, and dietary phytochemicals that are consumed regularly possess beneficial effects in preventing/ameliorating UC. For the first time, this review addresses the use of these dietary agents and spices in the treatment and prevention of IBD and also emphasizes on the mechanisms responsible for their effects.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the antiobesity effects of Monascus pilosus-fermented black soybean (F-BS) in C57BL/6 mice with high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity. F-BS (oral, 0.5 and 1.0 g/kg per body weight, twice per day) ameliorated obesity by reducing body and liver weight increases, and regulating blood glucose and cholesterol levels in C57BL/6 mice fed a control or HFD with oral administration of F-BS for 12 weeks. F-BS suppressed the growth of epididymal, retroperitoneal, and perirenal fat pads by preventing increases in the adipocyte size. Moreover, the levels of blood glucose, total cholesterol, and leptin were significantly lowered by F-BS administration in a dose-dependent manner. These results indicated that F-BS is a beneficial food supplement for preventing obesity, controlling blood glucose, and lowering cholesterol. Future research strategies should address the mechanisms that selectively regulate obesity, including hyperglycemia and hypercholesterolemia.

Abstract
[Purpose] Many researchers are trying to solve the metabolic syndrome by utilizing a variety of nutritional control and exercise. Of those, silkworm pupae peptides are known to inhibit the synthesis of fat. Therefore, we examine the effect of fat metabolism by supplying silkworm pupae (SP) for 5-week in swim-trained rats. [Methods] Animals were divided into four groups as a group (n = 32) fed a normal diet (CO) with exercise training (CE); a group fed a silkworm pupa diet (SPC) with an exercise training (SPE), respectively. [Results] Abdominal fat pads (abdominal and epididymal) weight were lowest in SPE. The serum triglyceride, total cholesterol concentrations were lower in the SP and the SPE. HDL-cholesterol, however, was not different between groups. Liver AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase) was increased in the CE and the SPE. Liver PPAR-α (Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha) was increased in the SPC and SPE. L-FABP (liver fatty acids binding protein) was increased by SP ingestion. Liver CPT-1 (carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1) protein expression was increased by exercise training only. [Conclusion] In the present study showed that the silkworm pupae intake and/or swimming exercise training activates fat metabolism to reduce the concentration of serum lipids. Thus, the silkworm pupae intake leads to a reduction in fat storage, this is considered to be effective in the inhibition of the metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
The abnormal content of blood lipids often results in metabolic diseases, such as hyperlipidemia and obesity. Many agents, including natural sources from traditional food, have been developed to regulate the blood lipid contents. In this study, we examined the anti-hyperlipidemic activity of Rhynchosia nulubilis seeds pickled with brown rice vinegar (RNSpBRV), a Korean traditional pickled soybean food. Since RNSpBRV is made of R. nulubilis seeds (RNS) soaked in brown rice vinegar (BRV), we compared the anti-adipogenic activity between RNS, BRV and solid fraction of RNSpBRV (SF-RNSpBRV), liquid fraction of RNSpBRV (LF-RNSpBRV). For this, the inhibitory effect of lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocyte was checked by adding methanol extracts of mixed RNS and BRV, LF-RNSpBRV, and SF-RNSpBRV. The addition of each methanol extract up to 1 mg/ml showed no cytotoxicity on 3T3-L1 adipocyte, and approximately 20% of the lipid droplet formation was suppressed with the methanol extract of BRL or SF-RNSpBRV. The highest suppression (42.1%) was achieved with LF-RNSpBRV. In addition, mice fed a high fat diet (HFD) supplemented with 5% RNSpBRV powder led to increased high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and lower blood glucose, triglyceride, and total cholesterol compared to mice fed with a HFD diet only. Interestingly, the size of the epididymis cells gradually decreased in HFD + 1% RNSpBRV- and HFD + 5% RNSpBRV-fed mice if compared those of HFD-fed mice. Taken together, these results provide evidence that RNSpBRV has a regulatory role in lipid metabolism that is related to hyperlipidemia.
