Effects of in situ climate warming on monarch caterpillar (Danaus plexippus) development

Fitness and mating compatibility of Rachiplusia nu strains exposed to soybean expressing Cry1Ac in Argentina

Rachiplusia nu (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a significant agricultural pest in South America infesting several crops, including soybeans. Bacillus thuringiensis (Berliner) (Bt) soybean, expressing Cry1Ac protein, is widely planted as a control method for numerous lepidopteran pests. However, insect resistance to Bt proteins poses a threat to its sustainability. Recent field reports from Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil have documented unexpected injury to Bt soybean caused by R. nu populations, which may indicate the development of resistance to Cry1Ac in this species. This study aimed to evaluate the biological performance, reproductive parameters, and reproductive compatibility of two R. nu strains, one susceptible (SS) and the other exhibiting reduced susceptibility to Bt toxin (RR), when reared on Bt and non-Bt soybean. Reproductive compatibility between strains was investigated through parental and hybrid crosses, evaluating fecundity, fertility, and mating success. SS larvae fed with Bt soybean failed to complete their life cycle, whereas RR larvae exhibited higher survival rates. Egg and larval stages of RR larvae were longer when reared on Bt soybean. Pupal mass was lower for Bt-fed resistant strain, although this did not reflect on fecundity and longevity. Results on parental crosses revealed that Bt-fed RR strain displayed reduced mating success, fecundity, and fertility, compared to the non-Bt treatment. Hybrid crosses showed evidence for prezygotic and postzygotic incompatibility. These results suggest a shift in susceptibility of R. nu to Cry1Ac protein and highlight the importance of implementing robust insect resistance management strategies to maintain the effectiveness of Bt crops.

Extreme heat reduces host and parasite performance in a butterfly-parasite interaction

Environmental temperature fundamentally shapes insect physiology, fitness and interactions with parasites. Differential climate warming effects on host versus parasite biology could exacerbate or inhibit parasite transmission, with far-reaching implications for pollination services, biocontrol and human health. Here, we experimentally test how controlled temperatures influence multiple components of host and parasite fitness in monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) and their protozoan parasites Ophryocystis elektroscirrha. Using five constant-temperature treatments spanning 18-34°C, we measured monarch development, survival, size, immune function and parasite infection status and intensity. Monarch size and survival declined sharply at the hottest temperature (34°C), as did infection probability, suggesting that extreme heat decreases both host and parasite performance. The lack of infection at 34°C was not due to greater host immunity or faster host development but could instead reflect the thermal limits of parasite invasion and within-host replication. In the context of ongoing climate change, temperature increases above current thermal maxima could reduce the fitness of both monarchs and their parasites, with lower infection rates potentially balancing negative impacts of extreme heat on future monarch abundance and distribution.

Extreme Hot Weather Has Stronger Impacts on Avian Reproduction in Forests Than in Cities

Climate change and urbanisation are among the most salient human-induced changes affecting Earth’s biota. Extreme weather events can have high biological impacts and are becoming more frequent recently. In cities, the urban heat island can amplify the intensity and frequency of hot weather events. However, the joint effects of heat events and urban microclimate on wildlife are unclear, as urban populations may either suffer more from increased heat stress or may adapt to tolerate warmer temperatures. Here, we test whether the effects of hot weather on reproductive success of great tits (Parus major) are exacerbated or dampened in urban environments compared to forest habitats. By studying 760 broods from two urban and two forest populations over 6 years, we show that 14–16 days-old nestlings have smaller body mass and tarsus length, and suffer increased mortality when they experience a higher number of hot days during the nestling period. The negative effects of hot weather on body mass and survival are significantly stronger in forests than in urban areas, where these effects are dampened or even reversed. These results suggest that urban nestlings are less vulnerable to extreme hot weather conditions than their non-urban conspecifics. This difference might be the result of adaptations that facilitate heat dissipation, including smaller body size, altered plumage and reduced brood size. Alternatively or additionally, parental provisioning and food availability may be less affected by heat in urban areas. Our findings suggest that adaptation to heat stress may help birds cope with the joint challenges of climate change and urbanisation.

Climate change and an invasive, tropical milkweed: an ecological trap for monarch butterflies

While it is well established that climate change affects species distributions and abundances, the impacts of climate change on species interactions has not been extensively studied. This is particularly important for specialists whose interactions are tightly linked, such as between the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) and the plant genus Asclepias, on which it depends. We used open-top chambers (OTCs) to increase temperatures in experimental plots and placed either nonnative Asclepias curassavica or native A. incarnata in each plot along with monarch larvae. We found, under current climatic conditions, adult monarchs had higher survival and mass when feeding on A. curassavica. However, under future conditions, monarchs fared much worse on A. curassavica. The decrease in adult survival and mass was associated with increasing cardenolide concentrations under warmer temperatures. Increased temperatures alone reduced monarch forewing length. Cardenolide concentrations in A. curassavica may have transitioned from beneficial to detrimental as temperature increased. Thus, the increasing cardenolide concentrations may have pushed the larvae over a tipping point into an ecological trap; whereby past environmental cues associated with increased fitness give misleading information. Given the ubiquity of specialist plant-herbivore interactions, the potential for such ecological traps to emerge as temperatures increase may have far-reaching consequences.
