Outdoor biohydrogen production by thermotolerant Rhodopseudomonas pentothenatexigens KKU-SN1/1 in a cluster of ten bioreactors system

In tropical regions, the viability of outdoor photo-fermentative biohydrogen production faces challenges arising from elevated temperatures and varying light intensity. This research aimed to explore how high temperatures and outdoor environments impact both biohydrogen production and the growth of purple non-sulfur bacteria. Our findings revealed the potential of Rhodopseudomonas spp. as a robust outdoor hydrogen-producing bacteria, demonstrating its capacity to thrive and generate biohydrogen even at 40 °C and under fluctuating outdoor conditions. Rhodopseudomonas harwoodiae NM3/1-2 produced the highest cumulative biohydrogen of 223 mL/L under anaerobic light conditions at 40 °C, while Rhodopseudomonas harwoodiae 2M had the highest dry cell weight of 2.93 g/L. However, R. harwoodiae NM3/1-2 demonstrated the highest dry cell weight of 3.99 g/L and Rhodopseudomonas pentothenatexigens KKU-SN1/1 exhibited the highest cumulative biohydrogen production of 400 mL/L when grown outdoors. In addition, the outdoor enhancement of biohydrogen production was achieved through the utilization of a cluster of ten bioreactors system. The outcomes demonstrated a notable improvement in biohydrogen production efficiency, marked by the highest daily biohydrogen production of 493 mL/L d by R. pentothenatexigens KKU-SN1/1. Significantly, the highest biohydrogen production rate was noted to be 17 times greater than that observed in conventional batch production methods. This study is the first to utilize R. pentothenatexigens and R. harwoodiae for sustained biohydrogen production at high temperatures and in outdoor conditions over an extended operational period. The successful utilization of a clustered system of ten bioreactors demonstrates potential to scale-up for industrial biohydrogen production.

Integrated biohydrogen production via lignocellulosic waste: Opportunity, challenges & future prospects

Hydrogen production through biological route is the cleanest, renewable and potential way to sustainable energy generation. Productions of hydrogen via dark and photo fermentations are considered to be more sustainable and economical approach over numerous existing biological modes. Nevertheless, both the biological modes suffer from certain limitations like low yield and production rate, and because of these practical implementations are still far away. Therefore, the present review provides an assessment and feasibility of integrated biohydrogen production strategy by combining dark and photo-fermentation as an advanced biochemical processing while using lignocellulosics biomass to improve and accelerate the biohydrogen production technology in a sustainable manner. This review also evaluates practical viability of the integrated approach for biohydrogen production along with the analysis of the key factors which significantly influence to elevate this technology on commercial ground with the implementation of various environment friendly and innovative approaches.

Photoautotrophic hydrogen production of Rhodobacter sphaeroides in a microbial electrosynthesis cell

Conventional photoheterotrophic H₂ production by purple sulfur bacteria requires additional organic substrates as the carbon and energy sources. This study examined the novel photoautotrophic H₂ production of Rhodobacter sphaeroides with concomitant CO₂ uptake in microbial electrosynthesis (MES). Under an applied potential of -0.9 V vs. Ag/AgCl to the cathode, Rhodobacter sphaeroides produced hydrogen with CO₂ as the sole carbon source under illumination. The initial planktonic cells decreased rapidly in suspension, whereas biomass formation on the cathode surface increased gradually during MES operation. The electron and carbon flow under photoautotrophic conditions in MES were estimated. Glutamate, as the nitrogen source, enhanced hydrogen production significantly (328 mL/L/day) compared to NH₄Cl (67 mL/L/day) during seven days of operation. The photoautotrophic condition with 6000 lx presented CO₂ consumption and simultaneous biomass formation on the cathode electrode. MES-driven electron and proton transfer enabled the simultaneous production of hydrogen and CO₂ uptake_.

Microbial Upgrading of Acetate into Value-Added Products-Examining Microbial Diversity, Bioenergetic Constraints and Metabolic Engineering Approaches

Ecological concerns have recently led to the increasing trend to upgrade carbon contained in waste streams into valuable chemicals. One of these components is acetate. Its microbial upgrading is possible in various species, with Escherichia coli being the best-studied. Several chemicals derived from acetate have already been successfully produced in E. coli on a laboratory scale, including acetone, itaconic acid, mevalonate, and tyrosine. As acetate is a carbon source with a low energy content compared to glucose or glycerol, energy- and redox-balancing plays an important role in acetate-based growth and production. In addition to the energetic challenges, acetate has an inhibitory effect on microorganisms, reducing growth rates, and limiting product concentrations. Moreover, extensive metabolic engineering is necessary to obtain a broad range of acetate-based products. In this review, we illustrate some of the necessary energetic considerations to establish robust production processes by presenting calculations of maximum theoretical product and carbon yields. Moreover, different strategies to deal with energetic and metabolic challenges are presented. Finally, we summarize ways to alleviate acetate toxicity and give an overview of process engineering measures that enable sustainable acetate-based production of value-added chemicals.

Biorenewable hydrogen production through biomass gasification: A review and future prospects

Hydrogen is recognized as one of the cleanest energy carriers, which can be produced from renewable biomass as a promising feedstock to achieve sustainable bioeconomy. Thermochemical technologies (e.g., gasification and pyrolysis) are the main routes for hydrogen production from biomass. Although biomass gasification, including steam gasification and supercritical water gasification, shows a high potential in field-scale applications, the selectivity and efficiency of hydrogen production need improvement to secure cost-effective industrial applications with high atom economy. This article reviews the two main-stream biomass-to-hydrogen technologies and discusses the significance of operating conditions and considerations in the catalytic system design. Challenges and prospects of hydrogen production via biomass gasification are explored to advise on the critical information gaps that require future investigations.
