Casting Nanoporous Platinum in Metal-Organic Frameworks

Platinum nanoparticle-anchored metal-organic complex nanospheres by a coordination-crystallization approach for enhanced sonodynamic therapy of tumors

The combination of noble metal nanoparticles with metal-organic complexes has attracted great attention for exploring new properties in biomedical application areas. So far, the preparation of noble metal nanoparticle-loaded metal-organic complexes often requires complex processes. Here, a simple coordination-crystallization approach was developed to prepare platinum nanoparticle-anchored metal-organic complexes (Pt-MOCs) by directly mixing disulfiram (DSF), chloroplatinic acid, and a reducing agent. The DSF and Pt ions first coordinate forming metal-organic complex nanospheres and then the Pt nanoparticles crystallized on the surface taking advantage of the coordination rate of the metal ions and organic ligand being greater than the reduction rate of the metal ions. The Pt-MOCs possess uniform and adjustable diameter (240-536 nm), and their surface potentials can also be modulated easily from -22 to +14 mV by adjusting the ratio of DSF and chloroplatinic acid. Phantom experiments show that the Pt-MOC nanospheres significantly improve the efficiency of singlet oxygen production after exposure to ultrasound irradiation. In vitro experiments show that the Pt-MOCs effectively produce reactive oxygen species and exhibit superior cytotoxicity for tumor cells under ultrasound irradiation compared to metal-organic complexes (MOCs) or Pt nanoparticles. Taken together, this work reports a coordination-crystallization approach to synthesize Pt-MOCs, which show excellent sonodynamic therapy for tumors.

Study of the Cycloaddition of CO2 with Styrene Oxide Over Six-Connected spn Topology MOFs (Zr, Hf) at Room Temperature

A series of MOFs with a 6-connected spn topology were synthesized (MOF-808-(Zr, Hf), PCN-777-(Zr, Hf), MOF-818-(Zr, Hf)). Through the in situ DRIFTS of NH₃ adsorption-desorption, we found that the activated catalyst mainly contains Lewis acid sites. The effects of different organic ligands on the Lewis acid of the Zr₆ cluster were analyzed by XPS and NH₃ -TPD, and the relative Lewis acidity of the same metal was obtained: PCN-777>MOF-808>MOF-818. In the Py-FTIR results, we confirmed that MOF-818 has a higher acid site density. In the activity test, MOFs with mesoporous structure showed better catalytic activity under normal temperature and pressure. Among them, MOF-818 can still maintain a high degree of crystallinity after catalysis. Finally, we use density functional theory to propose the mechanism of the cycloaddition reaction of carbon dioxide and styrene oxide. The results show that the metal is coordinated with styrene oxide and halogens attack the β carbon of the epoxide.

Trimetallic synergy in dendritic intermetallic PtSnBi nanoalloys for promoting electrocatalytic alcohol oxidation

Developing effective and robust novel electrocatalysts for direct alcohol fuel cells has been gaining much attention. However, the widely used Pt catalyst suffers from limitations including the sluggish kinetics, severe CO poisoning, and catalyst lost caused by aggregation and Ostwald ripening during alcohol oxidation reaction. Herein, dendritic intermetallic PtSnBi nanoalloys were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal approach with high electrocatalytic performance and enhanced CO resistance for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) owing to the synergism of the chosen three elements and unique three-dimensional morphology. Specifically, the PtSnBi nanoalloys display 4.6 and 6.7 times higher of mass activity (7.02 A mg^-1_Pt) and specific activity (16.65 mA cm^-2) toward MOR than those of commercial Pt/C, respectively. The mass activity of PtSnBi nanoalloys still retains 75.7% of the initial value after 800 cycles of stability test, superior to Pt/C (38.0%). The dual-functional effect of Sn, optimized electronic structure by the ligand effect, and unique atomic arrangement are responsible for the enhanced MOR activity and stability of PtSnBi nanoalloys. Furthermore, the PtSnBi nanoalloys with highlighted anti-CO poisoning capacity also improve the electrocatalytic performance toward EOR, indicating their great promise as broad energy electrocatalysts.

Designing Atomically Dispersed Au on Tensile-Strained Pd for Efficient CO2 Electroreduction to Formate

Pd is one of the most effective catalysts for the electrochemical reduction of CO₂ to formate, a valuable liquid product, at low overpotential. However, the intrinsically high CO affinity of Pd makes the surface vulnerable to CO poisoning, resulting in rapid catalyst deactivation during CO₂ electroreduction. Herein, we utilize the interaction between metals and metal-organic frameworks to synthesize atomically dispersed Au on tensile-strained Pd nanoparticles showing significantly improved formate production activity, selectivity, and stability with high CO tolerance. We found that the tensile strain stabilizes all reaction intermediates on the Pd surface, whereas the atomically dispersed Au selectively destabilizes CO* without affecting other adsorbates. As a result, the conventional COOH* versus CO* scaling relation is broken, and our catalyst exhibits 26- and 31-fold enhancement in partial current density and mass activity toward electrocatalytic formate production with over 99% faradaic efficiency, compared to Pd/C at -0.25 V versus RHE.

Facile and reversible digestion and regeneration of zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks

The digestion/regeneration of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has important applications for catalysis, drug delivery, environmental decontamination, and energy storage, among other applications. However, research in this direction is limited and very challenging. Here, we develop a facile method to digest and regenerate a series of zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) by bicarbonate or carbonate salts. As an example, UiO-66 demonstrates well the mechanism of reversible digestion/regeneration processes. By analyzing the digested zirconium species via X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman scattering spectroscopy, a digestion mechanism based on the formation of dissoluble complexes [Zr₂(OH)₂(CO₃)₄]^2- is proposed. Impressively, ultrafine Pd nanoparticles can be extracted from Pd@PCN-224 via this strategy. This work, thus, may provide new insight for the development of renewable MOFs and their practical applications.
