Cation Exchange in Colloidal Transition Metal Nitride Nanocrystals

Transition metal nitride (TMN)-based nanostructures have emerged as promising materials for diverse applications in electronics, photonics, energy storage, and catalysis due to their highly desirable physicochemical properties. However, synthesizing TMN-based nanostructures with designed compositions and morphologies poses challenges, especially in the solution phase. The cation exchange reaction (CER) stands out as a versatile postsynthetic strategy for preparing nanostructures that are otherwise inaccessible through direct synthesis. Nevertheless, exploration of the CER in TMNs lags behind that in metal chalcogenides and metal phosphides. Here, we demonstrate cation exchange in colloidal metal nitride nanocrystals, employing Cu3N nanocrystals as starting materials to synthesize Ni4N and CoN nanocrystals. By controlling the reaction conditions, Cu3N@Ni4N and Cu3N@CoN core@shell heterostructures with tunable compositions can also be obtained. The Ni4N and CoN nanocrystals are evaluated as catalysts for the electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Remarkably, CoN nanocrystals demonstrate superior OER performance with a low overpotential of 286 mV at 10 mA·cm-2, a small Tafel slope of 89 mV·dec-1, and long-term stability. Our CER approach in colloidal TMNs offers a new strategy for preparing other metal nitride nanocrystals and their heterostructures, paving the way for prospective applications.

Photochemical tuning of dynamic defects for high-performance atomically dispersed catalysts

Developing active and stable atomically dispersed catalysts is challenging because of weak non-specific interactions between catalytically active metal atoms and supports. Here we demonstrate a general method for synthesizing atomically dispersed catalysts via photochemical defect tuning for controlling oxygen-vacancy dynamics, which can induce specific metal-support interactions. The developed synthesis method offers metal-dynamically stabilized atomic catalysts, and it can be applied to reducible metal oxides, including TiO2, ZnO and CeO2, containing various catalytically active transition metals, including Pt, Ir and Cu. The optimized Pt-DSA/TiO2 shows unprecedentedly high photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity, producing 164 mmol g-1 h-1 with a turnover frequency of 1.27 s-1. Furthermore, it generates 42.2 mmol gsub-1 of hydrogen via a non-recyclable-plastic-photoreforming process, achieving a total conversion of 98%; this offers a promising solution for mitigating plastic waste and simultaneously producing valuable energy sources.

Ceria-Based Therapeutic Antioxidants for Biomedical Applications

The growing interest in nanomedicine over the last 20 years has carved out a research field called "nanocatalytic therapy," where catalytic reactions mediated by nanomaterials are employed to intervene in disease-critical biomolecular processes. Among many kinds of catalytic/enzyme-mimetic nanomaterials investigated thus far, ceria nanoparticles stand out from others owing to their unique scavenging properties against biologically noxious free radicals, including reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS), by exerting enzyme mimicry and nonenzymatic activities. Much effort has been made to utilize ceria nanoparticles as self-regenerating antioxidative and anti-inflammatory agents for various kinds of diseases, given the detrimental effects of ROS and RNS therein that need alleviation. In this context, this review is intended to provide an overview as to what makes ceria nanoparticles merit attention in disease therapy. The introductory part describes the characteristics of ceria nanoparticles as an oxygen-deficient metal oxide. The pathophysiological roles of ROS and RNS are then presented, as well as their scavenging mechanisms by ceria nanoparticles. Representative examples of recent ceria-nanoparticle-based therapeutics are summarized by categorization into organ and disease types, followed by the discussion on the remaining challenges and future research directions.

Cascade Catalytic Nanoparticles Selectively Alkalize Cancerous Lysosomes to Suppress Cancer Progression and Metastasis

Lysosomes are critical in modulating the progression and metastasis for various cancers. There is currently an unmet need for lysosomal alkalizers that can selectively and safely alter the pH and inhibit the function of cancer lysosomes. Here an effective, selective, and safe lysosomal alkalizer is reported that can inhibit autophagy and suppress tumors in mice. The lysosomal alkalizer consists of an iron oxide core that generates hydroxyl radicals (•OH) in the presence of excessive H+ and hydrogen peroxide inside cancer lysosomes and cerium oxide satellites that capture and convert •OH into hydroxide ions. Alkalized lysosomes, which display impaired enzyme activity and autophagy, lead to cancer cell apoptosis. It is shown that the alkalizer effectively inhibits both local and systemic tumor growth and metastasis in mice. This work demonstrates that the intrinsic properties of nanoparticles can be harnessed to build effective lysosomal alkalizers that are both selective and safe.

Revealing Two Distinct Formation Pathways of 2D Wurtzite-CdSe Nanocrystals Using In Situ X-Ray Scattering

Understanding the mechanism underlying the formation of quantum-sized semiconductor nanocrystals is crucial for controlling their synthesis for a wide array of applications. However, most studies of 2D CdSe nanocrystals have relied predominantly on ex situ analyses, obscuring key intermediate stages and raising fundamental questions regarding their lateral shapes. Herein, the formation pathways of two distinct quantum-sized 2D wurtzite-CdSe nanocrystals - nanoribbons and nanosheets - by employing a comprehensive approach, combining in situ small-angle X-ray scattering techniques with various ex situ characterization methods is studied. Although both nanostructures share the same thickness of ≈1.4 nm, they display contrasting lateral dimensions. The findings reveal the pivotal role of Se precursor reactivity in determining two distinct synthesis pathways. Specifically, highly reactive precursors promote the formation of the nanocluster-lamellar assemblies, leading to the synthesis of 2D nanoribbons with elongated shapes. In contrast, mild precursors produce nanosheets from a tiny seed of 2D nuclei, and the lateral growth is regulated by chloride ions, rather than relying on nanocluster-lamellar assemblies or Cd(halide)2 -alkylamine templates, resulting in 2D nanocrystals with relatively shorter lengths. These findings significantly advance the understanding of the growth mechanism governing quantum-sized 2D semiconductor nanocrystals and offer valuable guidelines for their rational synthesis.

Tailoring the subshell and electronic structure of an atomically precise AuAg alloy nanocluster

Manipulating the atomic-level structure of the subshell of a nanocluster while preserving the inner and outer shell structure is challenging. We present the synthesis and molecular structure of an alkynyl-protected Au34Ag27 nanocluster, which exhibits distinct third shell atomic arrangement, electronic structure, and optical properties from those of the Au34Ag28 nanocluster.

Active learning guides discovery of a champion four-metal perovskite oxide for oxygen evolution electrocatalysis

Multi-metal oxides in general and perovskite oxides in particular have attracted considerable attention as oxygen evolution electrocatalysts. Although numerous theoretical studies have been undertaken, the most promising perovskite-based catalysts continue to emerge from human-driven experimental campaigns rather than data-driven machine learning protocols, which are often limited by the scarcity of experimental data on which to train the models. This work promises to break this impasse by demonstrating that active learning on even small datasets-but supplemented by informative structural-characterization data and coupled with closed-loop experimentation-can yield materials of outstanding performance. The model we develop not only reproduces several non-obvious and actively studied experimental trends but also identifies a composition of a perovskite oxide electrocatalyst exhibiting an intrinsic overpotential at 10 mA cm-2oxide of 391 mV, which is among the lowest known of four-metal perovskite oxides.

Copper Doping Boosts Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction of Atomically Precise Gold Nanoclusters

Unraveling the atomistic synergistic effects of nanoalloys on the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (eCO2RR), especially in the presence of copper, is of paramount importance. However, this endeavor encounters significant challenges due to the lack of the crystallographically determined atomic-level structure of appropriate monometallic and bimetallic analogues. Herein, we report a one-pot synthesis and structure characterization of a AuCu nanoalloy cluster catalyst, [Au15Cu4(DPPM)6Cl4(C≡CR)1]2+ (denoted as Au15Cu4). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that Au15Cu4 comprises two interpenetrating incomplete, centered icosahedra (Au9Cu2 and Au8Cu3) and is protected by six DPPM, four halide, and one alkynyl ligand. The Au15Cu4 cluster and its closest monometal structural analogue, [Au18(DPPM)6Br4]2+ (denoted as Au18), as model systems, enable the elucidation of the atomistic synergistic effects of Au and Cu on eCO2RR. The results reveal that Au15Cu4 is an excellent eCO2RR catalyst in a gas diffusion electrode-based membrane electrode assembly (MEA) cell, exhibiting a high CO Faradaic efficiency (FECO) of >90%, and this efficiency is substantially higher than that of the undoped Au18 (FECO: 60% at -3.75 V). Au15Cu4 exhibits an industrial-level CO partial current density of up to -413 mA/cm2 at -3.75 V with the gas CO2-fed MEA, which is 2-fold higher than that of Au18. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the synergistic effects are induced by Cu doping, where the exposed pair of AuCu dual sites was suggested for launching the eCO2RR process. Besides, DFT simulations reveal that these special dual sites synergistically coordinate a moderate shift in the d-state, thus enhancing its overall catalytic performance.

Nanocluster Surface Microenvironment Modulates Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction

The catalytic activity and product selectivity of the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (eCO2 RR) depend strongly on the local microenvironment of mass diffusion at the nanostructured catalyst and electrolyte interface. Achieving a molecular-level understanding of the electrocatalytic reaction requires the development of tunable metal-ligand interfacial structures with atomic precision, which is highly challenging. Here, the synthesis and molecular structure of a 25-atom silver nanocluster interfaced with an organic shell comprising 18 thiolate ligands are presented. The locally induced hydrophobicity by bulky alkyl functionality near the surface of the Ag25 cluster dramatically enhances the eCO2 RR activity (CO Faradaic efficiency, FECO : 90.3%) with higher CO partial current density (jCO ) in an H-cell compared to Ag25 cluster (FECO : 66.6%) with confined hydrophilicity, which modulates surface interactions with water and CO2 . Remarkably, the hydrophobic Ag25 cluster exhibits jCO as high as -240 mA cm-2 with FECO >90% at -3.4 V cell potential in a gas-fed membrane electrode assembly device. Furthermore, this cluster demonstrates stable eCO2 RR over 120 h. Operando surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy and theoretical simulations reveal how the ligands alter the neighboring water structure and *CO intermediates, impacting the intrinsic eCO2 RR activity, which provides atomistic mechanistic insights into the crucial role of confined hydrophobicity.

Highly Efficient Nitrogen-Fixing Microbial Hydrogel Device for Sustainable Solar Hydrogen Production

Conversion of sunlight and organic carbon substrates to sustainable energy sources through microbial metabolism has great potential for the renewable energy industry. Despite recent progress in microbial photosynthesis, the development of microbial platforms that warrant efficient and scalable fuel production remains in its infancy. Efficient transfer and retrieval of gaseous reactants and products to and from microbes are particular hurdles. Here, inspired by water lily leaves floating on water, a microbial device designed to operate at the air-water interface and facilitate concomitant supply of gaseous reactants, smooth capture of gaseous products, and efficient sunlight delivery is presented. The floatable device carrying Rhodopseudomonas parapalustris, of which nitrogen fixation activity is first determined through this study, exhibits a hydrogen production rate of 104 mmol h-1  m-2 , which is 53 times higher than that of a conventional device placed at a depth of 2 cm in the medium. Furthermore, a scaled-up device with an area of 144 cm2 generates hydrogen at a high rate of 1.52 L h-1  m-2 . Efficient nitrogen fixation and hydrogen generation, low fabrication cost, and mechanical durability corroborate the potential of the floatable microbial device toward practical and sustainable solar energy conversion.

Ceria-vesicle nanohybrid therapeutic for modulation of innate and adaptive immunity in a collagen-induced arthritis model

Commencing with the breakdown of immune tolerance, multiple pathogenic factors, including synovial inflammation and harmful cytokines, are conjointly involved in the progression of rheumatoid arthritis. Intervening to mitigate some of these factors can bring a short-term therapeutic effect, but other unresolved factors will continue to aggravate the disease. Here we developed a ceria nanoparticle-immobilized mesenchymal stem cell nanovesicle hybrid system to address multiple factors in rheumatoid arthritis. Each component of this nanohybrid works individually and also synergistically, resulting in comprehensive treatment. Alleviation of inflammation and modulation of the tissue environment into an immunotolerant-favourable state are combined to recover the immune system by bridging innate and adaptive immunity. The therapy is shown to successfully treat and prevent rheumatoid arthritis by relieving the main symptoms and also by restoring the immune system through the induction of regulatory T cells in a mouse model of collagen-induced arthritis.

Orthogonal Dual Photocatalysis of Single Atoms on Carbon Nitrides for One-Pot Relay Organic Transformation

Single-atom photocatalysis has shown potential in various single-step organic transformations, but its use in multistep organic transformations in one reaction systems has rarely been achieved. Herein, we demonstrate atomic site orthogonality in the M1/C3N4 system (where M = Pd or Ni), enabling a cascade photoredox reaction involving oxidative and reductive reactions in a single system. The system utilizes visible-light-generated holes and electrons from C3N4, driving redox reactions (e.g., oxidation and fluorination) at the surface of C3N4 and facilitating cross-coupling reactions (e.g., C-C and C-O bond formation) at the metal site. The concept is generalized to different systems of Pd and Ni, thus making the catalytic site-orthogonal M1/C3N4 system an ideal photocatalyst for improving the efficiency and selectivity of multistep organic transformations.

Metal-Like Stretchable Nanocomposite Using Locally-Bundled Nanowires for Skin-Mountable Devices

Stretchable conductive nanocomposites have been intensively studied for wearable bioelectronics. However, development of nanocomposites that simultaneously feature metal-like conductivity(> 100 000 S cm-1 ) and high stretchability (> 100%) for high-performance skin-mountable devices is still extremely challenging. Here a material strategy for such a nanocomposite is presented by using local bundling of silver nanowires stabilized with dual ligands (i.e., 1-propanethiols and 1-decanethiols). When the nanocomposite is solidified via solvent evaporation under a highly humid condition, the nanowires in the organic solution are bundled and stabilized. The resulting locally-bundled nanowires lower contact resistance while maintain their percolation network, leading to high conductivity. Dual ligands of 1-propanethiol and 1-decanethiol further boost up the conductivity. As a result, a nanocomposite with both high conductivity of ≈122,120 S cm-1 and high stretchability of ≈200% is obtained. Such superb electrical and mechanical properties are critical for various applications in skin-like electronics, and herein, a wearable thermo-stimulation device is demonstrated.

Co-Delivery of Metabolic Modulators Leads to Simultaneous Lactate Metabolism Inhibition and Intracellular Acidification for Synergistic Cancer Therapy

Simultaneous lactate metabolism inhibition and intracellular acidification (LIIA) is a promising approach for inducing tumor regression by depleting ATP. However, given the limited efficacy of individual metabolic modulators, a combination of various modulators is required for highly efficient LIIA. Herein, a co-delivery system that combines lactate transporter inhibitor, glucose oxidase, and O2 -evolving nanoparticles is proposed. As a vehicle, a facile room-temperature synthetic method for large-pore mesoporous silica nanoparticles (L-MSNs) is developed. O2 -evolving nanoparticles are then conjugated onto L-MSNs, followed by immobilizing the lactate transporter inhibitor and glucose oxidase inside the pores of L-MSNs. To load the lactate transporter inhibitor, which is too small to be directly loaded into the large pores, it is encapsulated in albumin by controlling the albumin conformation before being loaded into L-MSNs. Notably, inhibiting lactate efflux shifts the glucose consumption mechanism from lactate metabolism to glucose oxidase reaction, which eliminates glucose and produces acid. This leads to synergistic LIIA and subsequent ATP depletion in cancer cells. Consequently, L-MSN-based co-delivery of modulators for LIIA shows high anticancer efficacy in several mouse tumor models without toxicity in normal tissues. This study provides new insights into co-delivery of small-molecule drugs, proteins, and nanoparticles for synergistic metabolic modulation in tumors.

-SR removal or -R removal? A mechanistic revisit on the puzzle of ligand etching of Au25(SR)18 nanoclusters during electrocatalysis

Accurate identification of active sites is highly desirable for elucidation of the reaction mechanism and development of efficient catalysts. Despite the promising catalytic performance of thiolated metal nanoclusters (NCs), their actual catalytic sites remain elusive. Traditional first-principles calculations and experimental observations suggested dealkylated S and dethiolated metal, respectively, to be the active centers. However, the real kinetic origin of thiolate etching during the electrocatalysis of NCs is still puzzling. Herein, we conducted advanced first-principles calculations and electrochemical/spectroscopic experiments to unravel the electrochemical etching kinetics of thiolate ligands in prototype Au25(SCH3)18 NC. The electrochemical processes are revealed to be spontaneously facilitated by dethiolation (i.e., desorption of -SCH3), forming the free HSCH3 molecule after explicitly including the solvent effect and electrode potential. Thus, exposed under-coordinated Au atoms, rather than the S atoms, serve as the real catalytic sites. The thermodynamically preferred Au-S bond cleavage arises from the selective attack of H from proton/H2O on the S atom under suitable electrochemical bias due to the spatial accessibility and the presence of S lone pair electrons. Decrease of reduction potential promotes the proton attack on S and significantly accelerates the kinetics of Au-S bond breakage irrespective of the pH of the medium. Our theoretical results are further verified by the experimental electrochemical and spectroscopic data. At more negative electrode potentials, the number of -SR ligands decreased with concomitant increase of the vibrational intensity of S-H bonds. These findings together clarify the atomic-level activation mechanism on the surface of Au25(SR)18 NCs.

Minimally-Invasive and In-Vivo Hydrogel Patterning Method for In Situ Fabrication of Implantable Hydrogel Devices

Despite advances in a wide range of device applications of hydrogels, including implantable ones, a method for deploying patterned hydrogel devices into the body in a minimally-invasive manner is not available yet. However, in situ patterning of the hydrogel in vivo has an obvious advantage, by which incision surgery for implantation of the hydrogel device can be avoided. Here, a minimally-invasive and in vivo hydrogel patterning method for in situ fabrication of implantable hydrogel devices is presented. The sequential application of injectable hydrogels and enzymes, with assistance of minimally-invasive surgical instruments, enables the in vivo and in situ hydrogel patterning. This patterning method can be achieved by adopting an appropriate combination of the sacrificial mold hydrogel and the frame hydrogel, in consideration of unique material properties of the hydrogels such as high softness, facile mass transfer, biocompatibility, and diverse crosslinking mechanisms. In vivo and in situ patterning of the hydrogels functionalized with nanomaterials is also demonstrated to fabricate the wireless heater and tissue scaffold, showcasing broad applicability of the patterning method.

Inorganic nanoparticle agents for enhanced chemodynamic therapy of tumours

With the recent interest in the role of oxidative species/radicals in diseases, inorganic nanomaterials with redox activities have been extensively investigated for their potential use in nanomedicine. While many studies focusing on relieving oxidative stress to prevent pathogenesis and to suppress the progression of diseases have shown considerable success, another approach for increasing oxidative stress using nanomaterials to kill malignant cells has suffered from low efficiency despite its wide applicability to various targets. Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) is an emerging technique that can resolve such a problem by exploiting the characteristic tumour microenvironment to achieve high selectivity. In this review, we summarize the recent strategies and underlying mechanisms that have been used to improve the CDT performance using inorganic nanoparticles. In addition to the design of CDT agents, the effects of contributing factors, such as the acidity and the levels of hydrogen peroxide and antioxidants in the tumour microenvironment, together with their modulation and application in combination therapy, are presented. The challenges lying ahead of future clinical translation of this rapidly advancing technology are also discussed.

Transformation of K2Sb8Q13 and KSb5Q8 Bulk Crystals to Sb2Q3 (Q = S, Se) Nanofibers by Acid-Base Solution Chemistry

The ability to manipulate crystal structures using kinetic control is of broad interest because it enables the design of materials with structures, compositions, and morphologies that may otherwise be unattainable. Herein, we report the low-temperature structural transformation of bulk inorganic crystals driven by hard-soft acid-base (HSAB) chemistry. We show that the three-dimensional framework K₂Sb₈Q₁₃ and layered KSb₅Q₈ (Q = S, Se, and Se/S solid solutions) compounds transform to one-dimensional Sb₂Q₃ nano/microfibers in N₂H₄·H₂O solution by releasing Q^2- and K⁺ ions. At 100 °C and ambient pressure, a transformation process takes place that leads to significant structural changes in the materials, including the formation and breakage of covalent bonds between Sb and Q. Despite the insolubility of the starting crystals in N₂H₄·H₂O under the given conditions, the mechanism of this transformation can be rationalized by applying the HSAB principle. By adjusting factors such as the reactants' acid/base properties, temperature, and pressure, the process can be controlled, allowing for the achievement of a wide range of optical band gaps (ranging from 1.14 to 1.59 eV) while maintaining the solid solution nature of the anion sublattice in the Sb₂Q₃ nanofibers.

Spectral fingerprints of individual Mn2+ impurities and Mn2+ pairs in magic-sized nanoclusters

The chemical synthesis of (CdSe)13 magic-sized clusters (MSCs) allows the replacement of host atoms by individual transition metals such as Mn. By analyzing the spectral fingerprints of the Mn2+ photoluminescence (PL) in MSCs with different dopant concentrations, we are able to distinguish between single Mn2+ ions and coupled Mn2+ pairs. In case of Mn2+ pair emission, temperature-dependent studies show a pronounced red shift, followed by a distinct blue shift of the PL energy upon heating. This is related to a spin ladder formation of the ground and excited states due to Mn2+-Mn2+ exchange interaction at cryogenic temperatures, which is assumed to vanish at higher temperatures. In contrast, single Mn2+ ion PL exhibits a unique redshift with increasing temperature, which can be attributed to a particularly strong coupling to vibronic modes due to the ultimate small size of the MSCs.

Critical roles of metal-ligand complexes in the controlled synthesis of various metal nanoclusters

Metal nanoclusters (NCs), an important class of nanoparticles (NPs), are extremely small in size and possess quasi-molecular properties. Due to accurate stoichiometry of constituent atoms and ligands, NCs have strong structure-property relationship. The synthesis of NCs is seemingly similar to that of NPs as both are formed by colloidal phase transitions. However, they are considerably different because of metal-ligand complexes in NC synthesis. Reactive ligands can convert metal salts to complexes, actual precursors to metal NCs. During the complex formation, various metal species occur, having different reactivity and fraction depending on synthetic conditions. It can alter their degree of participation in NC synthesis and the homogeneity of final products. Herein, we investigate the effects of complex formation on the entire NC synthesis. By controlling the fraction of various Au species showing different reactivity, we find that the extent of complex formation alters reduction kinetics and the uniformity of Au NCs. We demonstrate that this concept can be universally applied to synthesize Ag, Pt, Pd, and Rh NCs.

Single-Atom Rh on High-Index CeO2 Facet for Highly Enhanced Catalytic CO Oxidation

Reducible oxide-supported noble metal nanoparticles exhibit high activity in catalyzing many important oxidation reactions. However, atom migration under harsh reaction conditions leads to deactivation of the catalyst. Meanwhile, single-atom catalysts demonstrate enhanced stability, but often suffer from poor catalytic activity owing to the ionized surface state. In this work, we address the poor activity and stability issues simultaneously by synthesizing highly active and durable rhodium (Rh) single-atom catalysts through a "wrap-bake-peel" process. The pre-coated SiO2 layer during synthesis of catalyst plays a crucial role in not only protecting CeO2 support against sintering, but also donating electron to weaken the Ce-O bond, producing highly loaded Rh single atoms on the CeO2 support exposed with high-index {420}. Benefiting from the unique electronic structure of CeO2 facets, more oxygen vacancies are generated along with the deposition of more electropositive Rh single atoms, leading to remarkably improved catalytic performance in CO oxidation.

Geometric Tuning of Single-Atom FeN4 Sites via Edge-Generation Enhances Multi-Enzymatic Properties

Single-atom nanozymes (SAzymes) are considered promising alternatives to natural enzymes. The catalytic performance of SAzymes featuring homogeneous, well-defined active structures can be enhanced through elucidating structure-activity relationship and tailoring physicochemical properties. However, manipulating enzymatic properties through structural variation is an underdeveloped approach. Herein, the synthesis of edge-rich Fe single-atom nanozymes (FeNC-edge) via an H₂ O₂ -mediated edge generation is reported. By controlling the number of edge sites, the peroxidase (POD)- and oxidase (OXD)-like performance is significantly enhanced. The activity enhancement results from the presence of abundant edges, which provide new anchoring sites to mononuclear Fe. Experimental results combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that FeN₄ moieties in the edge sites display high electron density of Fe atoms and open N atoms. Finally, it is demonstrated that FeNC-edge nanozyme effectively inhibits tumor growth both in vitro and in vivo, suggesting that edge-tailoring is an efficient strategy for developing artificial enzymes as novel catalytic therapeutics.

Atom-Precise Heteroatom Core-Tailoring of Nanoclusters for Enhanced Solar Hydrogen Generation

While core-shell nanomaterials are highly desirable for realizing enhanced optical and catalytic properties, their synthesis with atomic-level control is challenging. Here, the synthesis and crystal structure of [Au₁₂ Ag₃₂ (SePh)₃₀ ]^4- , the first example of selenolated Au-Ag core-shell nanoclusters, comprising a gold icosahedron core trapped in a silver dodecahedron, which is protected by an Ag₁₂ (SePh)₃₀ shell, is presented. The gold core strongly modifies the overall electronic structure and induces synergistic effects, resulting in high enhancements in the stability and near-infrared-II photoluminescence. The Au₁₂ Ag₃₂ and its homometal analog Ag₄₄ , show strong interactions with oxygen vacancies of TiO₂ , facilitating the interfacial charge transfer for photocatalysis. Indeed, the Au₁₂ Ag₃₂ /TiO₂ exhibits remarkable solar H₂ production (6810 µmol g^-1  h^-1 ), which is ≈6.2 and ≈37.8 times higher than that of Ag₄₄ /TiO₂ and TiO₂ , respectively. Good stability and recyclability with minimal catalytic activity loss are additional features of Au₁₂ Ag₃₂ /TiO₂ . The experimental and computational results reveal that the Au₁₂ Ag₃₂ acts as an efficient cocatalyst by possessing a favorable electronic structure that aligns well with the TiO₂ bands for the enhanced separation of photoinduced charge carriers due to the relatively negatively charged Au₁₂ core. These atomistic insights will motivate uncovering of the structure-catalytic activity relationships of other nanoclusters.

Floatable photocatalytic hydrogel nanocomposites for large-scale solar hydrogen production

Storing solar energy in chemical bonds aided by heterogeneous photocatalysis is desirable for sustainable energy conversion. Despite recent progress in designing highly active photocatalysts, inefficient solar energy and mass transfer, the instability of catalysts and reverse reactions impede their practical large-scale applications. Here we tackle these challenges by designing a floatable photocatalytic platform constructed from porous elastomer-hydrogel nanocomposites. The nanocomposites at the air-water interface feature efficient light delivery, facile supply of water and instantaneous gas separation. Consequently, a high hydrogen evolution rate of 163 mmol h^-1 m^-2 can be achieved using Pt/TiO₂ cryoaerogel, even without forced convection. When fabricated in an area of 1 m² and incorporated with economically feasible single-atom Cu/TiO₂ photocatalysts, the nanocomposites produce 79.2 ml of hydrogen per day under natural sunlight. Furthermore, long-term stable hydrogen production in seawater and highly turbid water and photoreforming of polyethylene terephthalate demonstrate the potential of the nanocomposites as a commercially viable photocatalytic system.

Stretchable Low-Impedance Conductor with Ag-Au-Pt Core-Shell-Shell Nanowires and in Situ Formed Pt Nanoparticles for Wearable and Implantable Device

Mechanically soft metallic nanocomposites have gained much attention as a key material for intrinsically stretchable biointegrated devices. However, it has been challenging to develop a stretchable conductive nanocomposite with all the desired material characteristics including high conductivity, high stretchability, low cytotoxicity, and low impedance. Here, we present a material strategy for the stretchable conductive nanocomposite, particularly emphasizing low impedance, by combining silver-gold-platinum core-shell-shell nanowires and homogeneously dispersed in situ synthesized platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs). The highly embossed structure of the outermost Pt shell, together with the intrinsic electrical property of Pt, contributes to minimizing the impedance. The gold-platinum double-layer sheath prevents leaching of cytotoxic Ag ions, thus improving biocompatibility. Homogeneously dispersed Pt NPs, synthesized in situ during fabrication of the nanocomposite, simultaneously enhance conductivity, reduce impedance, and improve stretchability by supporting the percolation network formation. This intrinsically stretchable nanocomposite conductor can be applied to wearable and implantable bioelectronics for recording biosignals and delivering electrical stimulations in vivo.

Synthesis, Assembly, and Applications of Magic-Sized Semiconductor (CdSe)13 Cluster

ConspectusAtomically precise metal chalcogenide clusters (MCCs) are model molecular compounds of scientifically and technologically important semiconductor nanocrystals, which are known as quantum dots (QDs). The significantly high ambient stability of MCCs of particular sizes, as compared to that of slightly smaller or larger sizes, made them be termed "magic-sized clusters" (MSCs). In other words, MSCs with specific sizes between sizes of precursors (typically, metal-ligand complexes) and nanocrystals (typically, QDs) appear sequentially during the colloidal synthesis of nanocrystals, while the other cluster species decompose to precursor monomers or are consumed during the growth of the nanocrystals. Unlike nanocrystals with an ambiguous atomic-level structure and a substantial size distribution, MSCs possess atomically monodisperse size, composition, and distinct atomic arrangement. Chemical synthesis and exploration of properties of MSCs are of great significance since they help systematically understand the evolution of fundamental properties as well as build structure-activity relationships at distinct molecular levels. Furthermore, MSCs are anticipated to offer atomic-level insights into the growth mechanism of the semiconductor nanocrystals, which is highly desirable in the design of advanced materials with new functions. In this Account, we cover our recent efforts in the advancement of one of the most important stoichiometric CdSe MSCs, (CdSe)₁₃. In particular, we present its molecular structure derived from a single crystal X-ray crystallographic study of the closest MSC, Cd₁₄Se₁₃. The crystal structure of MSC enables not only the understanding of the electronic structure and prediction of the potential sites for heteroatom dopants (e.g., Mn²⁺ and Co²⁺) but also the identification of favorable synthetic conditions for the selective synthesis of desired MSCs. Next, we focus on enhancing the photoluminescence quantum yield and stability of Mn²⁺ doped (CdSe)₁₃ MSCs through their self-assembly, which is facilitated by the rigid diamines. In addition, we show how atomic-level synergistic effects and functional groups of the assemblies of alloy MSCs can be utilized for a highly enhanced catalytic CO₂ fixation with epoxides. Benefiting from the intermediate stability, the MSCs are explored as single-source precursors to low-dimensional nanostructures, such as nanoribbons and nanoplatelets, through the controlled transformation. Distinct differences in the outcome of the solid-state and colloidal-state conversion of MSCs suggest the need for careful consideration of the phase and reactivity of MSCs as well as the type of dopant to achieve novel structured multicomponent semiconductors. Finally, we summarize the Account and provide future perspectives on the fundamental and applied scientific research of MSCs.

Ceria Nanoparticles as Copper Chaperones that Activate SOD1 for Synergistic Antioxidant Therapy to Treat Ischemic Vascular Diseases

All exogenous nanomaterials undergo rapid biotransformation once injected into the body and fall short of executing the intended purpose. Here, it is reported that copper-deposited ceria nanoparticles (CuCe NPs) exhibit enhanced antioxidant effects over pristine ceria nanoparticles, as the released copper buffers the depletion of glutathione while providing the bioavailable copper as a cofactor for the antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase 1. The upregulated intracellular antioxidants along with the ceria nanoparticles synergistically scavenge reactive oxygen species and promote anti-inflammation and M2 polarization of macrophages by modulating signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 and 6 (STAT1 and STAT6). The therapeutic effect of CuCe NPs is demonstrated in ischemic vascular diseases (i.e., murine models of hindlimb ischemia and myocardial infarction) in which the copper-deposition affords increased perfusion and alleviation in tissue damage. The results provide rationale that metal oxide nanomaterials can be designed in a way to induce the upregulation of specific biological factors for optimal therapeutic performance.

Ventricular tachyarrhythmia treatment and prevention by subthreshold stimulation with stretchable epicardial multichannel electrode array

The implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) is an effective method to prevent sudden cardiac death in high-risk patients. However, the transvenous lead is incompatible with large-area electrophysiological mapping and cannot accommodate selective multichannel precision stimulations. Moreover, it involves high-energy shocks, resulting in pain, myocardial damage, and recurrences of ventricular tachyarrhythmia (VTA). We present a method for VTA treatment based on subthreshold electrical stimulations using a stretchable epicardial multichannel electrode array, which does not disturb the normal contraction or electrical propagation of the ventricle. In rabbit models with myocardial infarction, the infarction was detected by mapping intracardiac electrograms with the stretchable epicardial multichannel electrode array. Then, VTAs could be terminated by sequential electrical stimuli from the epicardial multichannel electrode array beginning with low-energy subthreshold stimulations. Last, we used these subthreshold stimulations to prevent the occurrence of additional VTAs. The proposed protocol using the stretchable epicardial multichannel electrode array provides opportunities toward the development of innovative methods for painless ICD therapy.

Penetrative and Sustained Drug Delivery Using Injectable Hydrogel Nanocomposites for Postsurgical Brain Tumor Treatment

Postsurgical treatment of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) by systemic chemotherapy and radiotherapy is often inefficient. Tumor cells infiltrating deeply into the brain parenchyma are significant obstacles to the eradication of GBM. Here, we present a potential solution to this challenge by introducing an injectable thermoresponsive hydrogel nanocomposite. As a liquid solution that contains drug-loaded micelles and water-dispersible ferrimagnetic iron oxide nanocubes (wFIONs), the hydrogel nanocomposite is injected into the resected tumor site after surgery. It promptly gelates at body temperature to serve as a soft, deep intracortical drug reservoir. The drug-loaded micelles target residual GBM cells and deliver drugs with a minimum premature release. Alternating magnetic fields accelerate diffusion through heat generation from wFIONs, enabling penetrative drug delivery. Significantly suppressed tumor growth and improved survival rates are demonstrated in an orthotopic mouse GBM model. Our system proves the potential of the hydrogel nanocomposite platform for postsurgical GBM treatment.

Alkynyl-Protected Chiral Bimetallic Ag22 Cu7 Superatom with Multiple Chirality Origins

Understanding the origin of chirality in the nanostructured materials is essential for chiroptical and catalytic applications. Here we report a chiral AgCu superatomic cluster, [Ag₂₂ Cu₇ (C≡CR)₁₆ (PPh₃ )₅ Cl₆ ](PPh₄ ), Ag₂₂ Cu₇ , protected by an achiral alkynyl ligand (HC≡CR: 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenylacetylene). Its crystal structure comprises a rare interpenetrating biicosahedral Ag₁₇ Cu₂ core, which is stabilized by four different types of motifs: one Cu(C≡CR)₂ , four -C≡CR, two chlorides and one helical Ag₅ Cu₄ (C≡CR)₁₀ (PPh₃ )₅ Cl₄ . Structural analysis reveals that Ag₂₂ Cu₇ exhibits multiple chirality origins, including the metal core, the metal-ligand interface and the ligand layer. Furthermore, the circular dichroism spectra of R/S-Ag₂₂ Cu₇ are obtained by employing appropriate chiral molecules as optical enrichment agents. DFT calculations show that Ag₂₂ Cu₇ is an eight-electron superatom, confirm that the cluster is chirally active, and help to analyze the origins of the circular dichroism.

Body-Centered-Cubic-Kernelled Ag15Cu6 Nanocluster with Alkynyl Protection: Synthesis, Total Structure, and CO2 Electroreduction

While atomically monodisperse nanostructured materials are highly desirable to unravel the size- and structure-catalysis relationships, their controlled synthesis and the atomic-level structure determination pose challenges. Particularly, copper-containing atomically precise alloy nanoclusters are potential catalyst candidates for the electrochemical CO₂ reduction reaction (eCO₂RR) due to high abundance and tunable catalytic activity of copper. Herein, we report the synthesis and total structure of an alkynyl-protected 21-atom AgCu alloy nanocluster [Ag₁₅Cu₆(C≡CR)₁₈(DPPE)₂]^-, denoted as Ag₁₅Cu₆ (HC≡CR: 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenylacetylene; DPPE: 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane). The single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that Ag₁₅Cu₆ consists of an Ag₁₁Cu₄ metal core exhibiting a body-centered cubic (bcc) structure, which is capped by 2 Cu atoms, 2 Ag₂DPPE motifs, and 18 alkynyl ligands. Interestingly, the Ag₁₅Cu₆ cluster exhibits excellent catalytic activity for eCO₂RR with a CO faradaic efficiency (FE_CO) of 91.3% at -0.81 V (vs the reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE), which is much higher than that (FE_CO: 48.5% at -0.89 V vs RHE) of Ag₉Cu₆ with bcc structure. Furthermore, Ag₁₅Cu₆ shows superior stability with no significant decay in the current density and FE_CO during a long-term operation of 145 h. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the de-ligated Ag₁₅Cu₆ cluster can expose more space at the pair of AgCu dual metals as the efficient active sites for CO formation.

Shape Transformation Mechanism of Gold Nanoplates

Shape control is of key importance in utilizing the structure-property relationship of nanocrystals. The high surface-to-volume ratio of nanocrystals induces dynamic surface reactions on exposed facets of nanocrystals, such as adsorption, desorption, and diffusion of surface atoms, all of which are important in overall shape transformation. However, it is difficult to track shape transformation of nanocrystals and understand the underlying mechanism at the level of distinguishing events on individual facets. Herein, we investigate changes of individual surface-exposed facets during diverse shape transformations of Au nanocrystals using liquid phase TEM in various chemical potentials and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. The results reveal that the diffusion of surface atoms on nanocrystals is the governing factor in determining the final structure in shape transformation, causing the fast transformation of unstable facets to truncated morphology with minimized surface energy. The role of surface diffusion introduced here can be further applied to understanding the formation mechanism of variously shaped nanocrystals.

Synergistic Interactions of Neighboring Platinum and Iron Atoms Enhance Reverse Water-Gas Shift Reaction Performance

The limitations of conventional strategies in finely controlling the composition and structure demand new promotional effects for upgrading the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) catalysts for enhanced fuel production. We report the design and synthesis of a hetero-dual-site catalyst for boosting RWGS performance by controllably loading Fe atoms at the neighboring Pt atom on the surface of commercial CeO₂. The Fe-Pt/CeO₂ exhibits a remarkably high catalytic performance (TOF_Pt: 43,519 h^-1) for CO₂ to CO conversion with ∼100% CO selectivity at a relatively low temperature of 350 °C. Furthermore, the catalyst retains over 80% activity after 200 h of continuous operation. The experimental and computational investigations reveal a "two-way synergistic effect", where Fe atoms can not only serve as promotors to alter the charge density of Pt atoms but also be activated by the excess active hydrogen species generated by Pt atoms, enhancing catalytic activity and stability.

Dual action of a tyrosinase-mesoporous silica nanoparticle complex for synergistic tissue adhesion

Bridging biological tissues for immediate adhesion and long-term sustainability was accomplished using a combination of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) and tyrosinase. Tyrosinase-loaded MSNs provided rapid physical adsorption, while tyrosinase within MSNs induced enzymatic chemical bond gluing of tissues. This synergistic strategy has robust potential in tissue adhesives for clinical settings.

Observation of H2 Evolution and Electrolyte Diffusion on MoS2 Monolayer by In Situ Liquid-Phase Transmission Electron Microscopy

Unit-cell-thick MoS₂ is a promising electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) owing to its tunable catalytic activity, which is determined based on the energetics and molecular interactions of different types of HER active sites. Kinetic responses of MoS₂ active sites, including the reaction onset, diffusion of the electrolyte and H₂ bubbles, and continuation of these processes, are important factors affecting the catalytic activity of MoS₂ . Investigating these factors requires a direct real-time analysis of the HER occurring on spatially independent active sites. Herein, the H₂ evolution and electrolyte diffusion on the surface of MoS₂ are observed in real time by in situ electrochemical liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy (LPTEM). Time-dependent LPTEM observations reveal that different types of active sites are sequentially activated under the same conditions. Furthermore, the electrolyte flow to these sites is influenced by the reduction potential and site geometry, which affects the bubble detachment and overall HER activity of MoS₂ .

Design of a Metal/Oxide/Carbon Interface for Highly Active and Selective Electrocatalysis

Sustainable energy-conversion and chemical-production require catalysts with high activity, durability, and product-selectivity. Metal/oxide hybrid structure has been intensively investigated to achieve promising catalytic performance, especially in neutral or alkaline electrocatalysis where water dissociation is promoted near the oxide surface for (de)protonation of intermediates. Although catalytic promise of the hybrid structure is demonstrated, it is still challenging to precisely modulate metal/oxide interfacial interactions on the nanoscale. Herein, we report an effective strategy to construct rich metal/oxide nano-interfaces on conductive carbon supports in a surfactant-free and self-terminated way. When compared to the physically mixed Pd/CeO₂ system, a much higher degree of interface formation was identified with largely improved hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) kinetics. The benefits of the rich metal-CeO₂ interface were further generalized to Pd alloys for optimized adsorption energy, where the Pd₃Ni/CeO₂/C catalyst shows superior performance with HOR selectivity against CO poisoning and shows long-term stability. We believe this work highlights the importance of controlling the interfacial junctions of the electrocatalyst in simultaneously achieving enhanced activity, selectivity, and stability.

Integration of synaptic phototransistors and quantum dot light-emitting diodes for visualization and recognition of UV patterns

Synaptic photodetectors exhibit photon-triggered synaptic plasticity, which thus can improve the image recognition rate by enhancing the image contrast. However, still, the visualization and recognition of invisible ultraviolet (UV) patterns are challenging, owing to intense background noise. Here, inspired by all-or-none potentiation of synapse, we develop an integrated device of synaptic phototransistors (SPTrs) and quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs), facilitating noise reduction and visualization of UV patterns through on-device preprocessing. The SPTrs convert noisy UV inputs into a weighted photocurrent, which is applied to the QLEDs as a voltage input through an external current-voltage-converting circuit. The threshold switching characteristics of the QLEDs result in amplified current and visible illumination by the suprathreshold input voltage or nearly zero current and no visible illumination by the input voltage below the threshold. The preprocessing of image data with the SPTr-QLED can amplify the image contrast, which is helpful for high-accuracy image recognition.

Selective removal of radioactive iodine from water using reusable Fe@Pt adsorbents

Environmental damage from serious nuclear accidents should be urgently restored, which needs the removal of radioactive species. Radioactive iodine isotopes are particularly problematic for human health because they are released in large amounts and retain radioactivity for a substantial time. Herein, we prepare platinum-coated iron nanoparticles (Fe@Pt) as a highly selective and reusable adsorbent for iodine species, i.e., iodide (I^-), iodine (I₂), and methyl iodide (CH₃I). Fe@Pt selectively separates iodine species from seawater and groundwater with a removal efficiency ≥ 99.8%. The maximum adsorption capacity for the iodine atom of all three iodine species was determined to be 25 mg/g. The magnetic properties of Fe@Pt allow for the facile recovery and reuse of Fe@Pt, which remains stable with high efficiency (97.5%) over 100 uses without structural and functional degradation in liquid media. Practical application to the removal of radioactive ¹²⁹I and feasibility for scale-up using a 20 L system demonstrate that Fe@Pt can function as a reusable adsorbent for the selective removal of iodine species. This systematic procedure is a standard protocol for designing highly active adsorbents for the clean separation and removal of various chemical species dissolved in wastewater.

Stretchable colour-sensitive quantum dot nanocomposites for shape-tunable multiplexed phototransistor arrays

High-performance photodetecting materials with intrinsic stretchability and colour sensitivity are key requirements for the development of shape-tunable phototransistor arrays. Another challenge is the proper compensation of optical aberrations and noises generated by mechanical deformation and fatigue accumulation in a shape-tunable phototransistor array. Here we report rational material design and device fabrication strategies for an intrinsically stretchable, multispectral and multiplexed 5 × 5 × 3 phototransistor array. Specifically, a unique spatial distribution of size-tuned quantum dots, blended in a semiconducting polymer within an elastomeric matrix, was formed owing to surface energy mismatch, leading to highly efficient charge transfer. Such intrinsically stretchable quantum-dot-based semiconducting nanocomposites enable the shape-tunable and colour-sensitive capabilities of the phototransistor array. We use a deep neural network algorithm for compensating optical aberrations and noises, which aids the precise detection of specific colour patterns (for example, red, green and blue patterns) both under its flat state and hemispherically curved state (radius of curvature of 18.4 mm).

Recent progress in liquid embolic agents

Vascular embolization is a non-surgical procedure used to treat diseases or morbid conditions related to blood vessels, such as bleeding, arteriovenous malformation, aneurysm, and hypervascular tumors, through the intentional occlusion of blood vessels. Among various types of embolic agents that have been applied, liquid embolic agents are gaining an increasing amount of attention owing to their advantages in distal infiltration into regions where solid embolic agents cannot reach, enabling more extensive embolization. Meanwhile, recent advances in biomaterials and technologies have also contributed to the development of novel liquid embolic agents that can resolve the challenges faced while using the existing embolic materials. In this review, we briefly summarize the clinically used embolic agents and their applications, and then present selected research results that overcome the limitations of the embolic agents in use. Through this review, we suggest the required properties of liquid embolic agents that ensure efficacy, which can replace the existing agents, providing directions for the future development in this field.

Facile and Scalable Synthesis of Whiskered Gold Nanosheets for Stretchable, Conductive, and Biocompatible Nanocomposites

Noble metal nanomaterials have been studied as conductive fillers for stretchable, conductive, and biocompatible nanocomposites. However, their performance as conductive filler materials is far from ideal because of their high percolation threshold and low intrinsic conductivity. Moreover, the difficulty in large-scale production is another critical hurdle in their practical applications. Here we report a method for the facile and scalable synthesis of whiskered gold nanosheets (W-AuNSs) for stretchable, conductive, and biocompatible nanocomposites and their application to stretchable bioelectrodes. W-AuNSs show a lower percolation threshold (1.56 vol %) than those of gold nanoparticles (5.02 vol %) and gold nanosheets (2.74 vol %), which enables the fabrication of W-AuNS-based stretchable nanocomposites with superior conductivity and high stretchability. Addition of platinum-coated W-AuNSs (W-AuNSs@Pt) to the prepared nanocomposite significantly reduces the impedance and improved charge storage capacity. Such enhanced performance of the stretchable nanocomposite enables us to fabricate stretchable bioelectrodes whose performance is demonstrated through animal experiments including electrophysiological recording and electrical stimulation in vivo.

Adaptive Self-Organization of Nanomaterials Enables Strain-Insensitive Resistance of Stretchable Metallic Nanocomposites

Highly conductive and stretchable nanocomposites are promising material candidates for skin electronics. However, the resistance of stretchable metallic nanocomposites highly depends on external strains, often deteriorating the performance of fabricated electronic devices. Here, a material strategy for the highly conductive and stretchable nanocomposites comprising metal nanomaterials of various dimensions and a viscoelastic block-copolymer matrix is presented. The resistance of the nanocomposites can be well retained under skin deformations (<50% strain). It is demonstrated that silver nanomaterials can self-organize inside the viscoelastic media in response to external strain when their surface is conjugated with 1-decanethiol. Distinct self-organization behaviors associated with nanomaterial dimensions and strain conditions are found. Adopting the optimum composition of 0D/1D/2D silver nanomaterials can render the resistance of the nanocomposites insensitive to uniaxial or biaxial strains. As a result, the resistance can be maintained with a variance of < 1% during 1000 stretching cycles under uniaxial and biaxial strains of <50% while a high conductivity of ≈31 000 S cm^-1 is achieved.

Effect of polystyrene nanoplastics and their degraded forms on stem cell fate

Several studies have examined the effects of micro- and nanoplastics on microbes, cells, and the environment. However, only a few studies have examined their effects-especially, those of their reduced cohesiveness-on cell viability and physiology. We synthesized surfactant-free amine-functionalized polystyrene (PS) nanoparticles (NPs) and PS-NPs with decreased crosslinking density (DPS-NPs) without changing other factors, such as size, shape, and zeta potential and examined their effects on cell viability and physiology. PS- and DPS-NPs exhibited reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging activity by upregulating GPX3 expression and downregulating HSP70 (ROS-related gene) and XBP1 (endoplasmic reticulum stress-related gene) expression in human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBM-MSCs). Additionally, they led to upregulation of MFN2 (mitochondrial fusion related gene) expression and downregulation of FIS1 (mitochondrial fission related gene) expression, indicating enhanced mitochondrial fusion in hBM-MSCs. Cell-cycle analysis revealed that PS- and DPS-NPs increased the proportion of cells in the S phase, indicating that they promoted cell proliferation and, specifically, the adipogenic differentiation of hBM-MSCs. However, the cytotoxicity of DPS-NPs against hBM-MSCs was higher than that of PS-NPs after long-term treatment under adipogenic conditions.

Facet-Defined Strain-Free Spinel Oxide for Oxygen Reduction

Exposing facet and surface strain are critical factors affecting catalytic performance but unraveling the composition-dependent activity on specific facets under strain-controlled environment is still challenging due to the synthetic difficulties. Herein, we achieved a (001) facet-defined Co-Mn spinel oxide surface with different surface compositions using epitaxial growth on Co₃O₄ nanocube template. We adopted composition gradient synthesis to relieve the strain layer by layer, minimizing the surface strain effect on catalytic activity. In this system, experimental and calculational analyses of model oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity reveals a volcano-like trend with Mn/Co ratios because of an adequate charge transfer from octahedral-Mn to neighboring Co. Co_0.5Mn_0.5 as an optimized Mn/Co ratio exhibits both outstanding ORR activity (0.894 V vs RHE in 1 M KOH) and stability (2% activity loss against chronoamperometry). By controlling facet and strain, this study provides a well-defined platform for investigating composition-structure-activity relationships in electrocatalytic processes.

Manipulating Nanoparticle Aggregates Regulates Receptor-Ligand Binding in Macrophages

The receptor-ligand interactions in cells are dynamically regulated by modulation of the ligand accessibility. In this study, we utilize size-tunable magnetic nanoparticle aggregates ordered at both nanometer and atomic scales. We flexibly anchor magnetic nanoparticle aggregates of tunable sizes over the cell-adhesive RGD ligand (Arg-Gly-Asp)-active material surface while maintaining the density of dispersed ligands accessible to macrophages at constant. Lowering the accessible ligand dispersity by increasing the aggregate size at constant accessible ligand density facilitates the binding of integrin receptors to the accessible ligands, which promotes the adhesion of macrophages. In high ligand dispersity, distant magnetic manipulation to lift the aggregates (which increases ligand accessibility) stimulates the binding of integrin receptors to the accessible ligands available under the aggregates to augment macrophage adhesion-mediated pro-healing polarization both in vitro and in vivo. In low ligand dispersity, distant control to drop the aggregates (which decreases ligand accessibility) repels integrin receptors away from the aggregates, thereby suppressing integrin receptor-ligand binding and macrophage adhesion, which promotes inflammatory polarization. Here, we present "accessible ligand dispersity" as a novel fundamental parameter that regulates receptor-ligand binding, which can be reversibly manipulated by increasing and decreasing the ligand accessibility. Limitless tuning of nanoparticle aggregate dimensions and morphology can offer further insight into the regulation of receptor-ligand binding in host cells.

Metastable hexagonal close-packed palladium hydride in liquid cell TEM

Metastable phases-kinetically favoured structures-are ubiquitous in nature^1,2. Rather than forming thermodynamically stable ground-state structures, crystals grown from high-energy precursors often initially adopt metastable structures depending on the initial conditions, such as temperature, pressure or crystal size^1,3,4. As the crystals grow further, they typically undergo a series of transformations from metastable phases to lower-energy and ultimately energetically stable phases^1,3,4. Metastable phases sometimes exhibit superior physicochemical properties and, hence, the discovery and synthesis of new metastable phases are promising avenues for innovations in materials science^1,5. However, the search for metastable materials has mainly been heuristic, performed on the basis of experiences, intuition or even speculative predictions, namely 'rules of thumb'. This limitation necessitates the advent of a new paradigm to discover new metastable phases based on rational design. Such a design rule is embodied in the discovery of a metastable hexagonal close-packed (hcp) palladium hydride (PdH_x) synthesized in a liquid cell transmission electron microscope. The metastable hcp structure is stabilized through a unique interplay between the precursor concentrations in the solution: a sufficient supply of hydrogen (H) favours the hcp structure on the subnanometre scale, and an insufficient supply of Pd inhibits further growth and subsequent transition towards the thermodynamically stable face-centred cubic structure. These findings provide thermodynamic insights into metastability engineering strategies that can be deployed to discover new metastable phases.

Enhanced Chemodynamic Therapy by Cu-Fe Peroxide Nanoparticles: Tumor Microenvironment-Mediated Synergistic Fenton Reaction

An urgent need in chemodynamic therapy (CDT) is to achieve high Fenton catalytic efficiency at small doses of CDT agents. However, simple general promotion of the Fenton reaction increases the risk of damaging normal cells along with the cancer cells. Therefore, a tailored strategy to selectively enhance the Fenton reactivity in tumors, for example, by taking advantage of the characteristics of the tumor microenvironment (TME), is in high demand. Herein, a heterogeneous CDT system based on copper-iron peroxide nanoparticles (CFp NPs) is designed for TME-mediated synergistic therapy. CFp NPs degrade under the mildly acidic conditions of TME, self-supply H₂O₂, and the released Cu and Fe ions, with their larger portions at lower oxidation states, cooperatively facilitate hydroxyl radical production through a highly efficient catalytic loop to achieve an excellent tumor therapeutic efficacy. This is distinct from previous heterogeneous CDT systems in that the synergism is closely coupled with the Cu⁺-assisted conversion of Fe³⁺ to Fe²⁺ rather than their independent actions. As a result, almost complete ablation of tumors at a minimal treatment dose is demonstrated without the aid of any other therapeutic modality. Furthermore, CFp NPs generate O₂ during the catalysis and exhibit a TME-responsive T₁ magnetic resonance imaging contrast enhancement, which are useful for alleviating hypoxia and in vivo monitoring of tumors, respectively.
