High‐Resolution Photoelectron Imaging of IrB 3 − : Observation of a π‐Aromatic B 3 + Ring Coordinated to a Transition Metal

Dehydrogenation of diborane on small Nbn+ clusters

The reactivity of Nbn+ (1 ≤ n ≤ 21) clusters with B2H6 is studied by using a self-developed multiple-ion laminar flow tube reactor combined with a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (MIFT-TQMS). The Nbn+ clusters were generated by a magnetron sputtering source and reacted with the B2H6 gas under fully thermalized conditions in the downstream flow tube where the reaction time was accurately controlled and adjustable. The complete and partial dehydrogenation products NbnB1-4+ and NbnB1-4H1,2,4+ were detected, indicative of the removal of H2 and likely BHx moieties. Interestingly, these NbnB1-4+ and NbnB1-4H1,2,4+ products are limited to 3 ≤ n ≤ 6, suggesting that the small Nbn+ clusters are relatively more reactive than the larger Nbn>6+ clusters under the same conditions. By varying the B2H6 gas concentrations and the reactant doses introduced into the flow tube, and by changing the reaction time, we performed a detailed analysis of the reaction dynamics in combination with the DFT-calculated thermodynamics. It is demonstrated that the lack of cooperative active sites on the Nb1+ cations accounts for the weakened dehydrogenation efficiency. Nb2+ forms partial dehydrogenation products at a faster rate. In contrast, the Nbn>6+ clusters are subject to more flexible vibrational relaxation which disperse the energy gain of B2H6-adsorption and thus are unable to overcome the energy barriers for subsequent hydrogen atom transfer and H2 release.

The Na⋅⋅⋅B Bond in NaBH3 - : A Different Type of Bond

A newly introduced Na-B bond in NaBH₃ ^- has been a challenge for the chemical bonding community. Here, a series of MBH₃ ^- (M=Li, Na, K) species and NaB(CN)₃ ^- are studied within the context of quantum chemical topology approaches. The analyses suggest that M-B interaction cannot be classified as an ordinary covalent, dative, or even simple ionic interaction. The interactions are controlled by coulombic forces between the metals and the substituents on boron, for example, H or CN, more than the direct M-B interaction. On the other hand, while the characteristics of the (3, -1) critical points of the bonds are comparable to weak hydrogen bonds, not covalent bonds, the metal and boron share a substantial sum of electrons. To the best of the author's knowledge, the characteristics of these bonds are unprecedented among known molecules. Considering all paradoxical properties of these bonds, they are herein described as ionic-enforced covalent bonds.

Reply to the Comment on "Realization of Lewis Basic Sodium Anion in the NaBH3 - Cluster"

We reply to the comment by S. Pan and G. Frenking who challenged our interpretation of the Na^- :→BH₃ dative bond in the recently synthesized NaBH₃ ^- cluster. Our conclusion remains the same as that in our original paper (https://doi.org/10.1002/anie.201907089 and https://doi.org/10.1002/ange.201907089). This conclusion is additionally supported by the energetic pathways and NBO charges calculated at UCCSD and CASMP2(4,4) levels of theory. We also discussed the suitability of the Laplacian of electron density (QTAIM) and Adaptive Natural Density Partitioning (AdNDP) method for bond type assignment. It seems that AdNDP yields more sensible results. This discussion reveals that the complex realm of bonding is full of semantic inconsistencies, and we invite experimentalists and theoreticians to elaborate this topic and find solutions incorporating different views on the dative bond.
