Abstract
Nanofiber fabrication is attracting great attention from scientists and technologists due to its applications in many fields of life. In order to design a nanosized polymer-based drug delivery system, we studied the conditions for the fabrication of electrospun nanofibers from poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and chitosan (CS), which are well-known as biocompatible, biodegradable and non-toxic polymers that are widely used in the medical field. Aiming to develop nanofibers that can directly target diseased cells for treatment, such as cancerous cells, the ideal choice would be a system that contains the highest CS content as well as high quality fibers. In the present manuscript, it is expected to become the basis for improving the low bioavailability of medicinal drugs limited by poor solubility and low permeability. PVA–CS nanofibers were obtained by electrospinning at a PVA:CS ratio of 5:5 in a 60% (w/w) acetic acid solution under the following parameters: voltage 30 kV, feed rate 0.2 mL/h, needle-collector distance 14 cm. The obtained fibers were relatively uniform, with a diameter range of 77–292 nm and average diameter of 153 nm. The nanofiber system holds promise as a potential material for the integration of therapeutic drugs.

Abstract
Nature has led to the discovery of biopolymers with noteworthy pharmaceutical applications. Blended biopolymers have demonstrated promising characteristics when compared with their individual counterparts. Sodium alginate (SA) is a marine polymer that has demonstrated the ability to form hydrogels, an interesting property for the development of cutaneous formulations. Predicting the good performance of blended biopolymers, a novel series of hybrid hydrogels based on SA and poly(vinyl) alcohol (PVA) were prepared. Quercetin, a natural polyphenolic flavonoid commonly found in fruits and vegetables, is widely known for its strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity, thus with potential applications against melanoma, dermatitis, psoriasis, and skin ageing. Here, hydrogels were produced at different ratios of SA and PVA. The surface morphology, structure, interaction of polymers, the capacity to absorb water and the entrapment efficiency of quercetin were evaluated for the blended hydrogels. Targeting the cutaneous application of the formulations, the rheological properties of all unloaded and quercetin-loaded hydrogels revealed pseudoplastic behavior, evidence of non-thixotropy, good resistance to deformation, and profile maintenance with temperatures ranging from 20 °C up to 40 °C. The incorporation of quercetin in the hydrogel retained its antioxidant activity, confirmed by radical scavenging assays (ABTS and DPPH). The permeability of quercetin through the skin showed different penetration/permeation profiles according to the hydrogel's blend. This behavior will allow the selection of SA-PVA at 2/1 ratio for a local and prolonged skin effect, making the use of these hydrogels a good solution to consider for the treatment of skin ageing and inflammation.

Abstract
Scaffolds can be considered as one of the most promising treatments for bone tissue regeneration. Herein, blends of chitosan, poly(vinyl alcohol), and hydroxyapatite in different ratios were used to synthesize scaffolds via freeze-drying. Mechanical tests, FTIR, swelling and solubility degree, DSC, morphology, and cell viability were used as characterization techniques. Statistical significance of the experiments was determined using a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with p < 0.05. Crosslinked and plasticized scaffolds absorbed five times more water than non-crosslinked and plasticized ones, which is an indicator of better hydrophilic features, as well as adequate resistance to water without detriment of the swelling potential. Indeed, the tested mechanical properties were notably higher for samples which were undergone to crosslinking and plasticized process. The presence of chitosan is determinant in pore formation and distribution which is an imperative for cell communication. Uniform pore size with diameters ranging from 142 to 519 µm were obtained, a range that has been described as optimal for bone tissue regeneration. Moreover, cytotoxicity was considered as negligible in the tested conditions, and viability indicates that the material might have potential as a bone regeneration system.

Abstract
Poly(vinyl alcohol) foams, containing different amounts of microfibrillated cellulose, were prepared through an eco-friendly procedure based on high-speed mixing and freeze-drying. The effect of filler amount on cell shape and regularity was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the evolution of the microstructure was assessed through dynamic cryo-SEM. Fourier Transformed Infrared Analysis and Differential Scanning Calorimetry measurements revealed the presence of hydrogen bond interaction among cellulosic filler and the matrix. The modulus and compression deflection of neat PVA were significantly improved by increasing the amount of microfibrillated cellulose content with respect to foams realised with pulp cellulose fibers.

Abstract
We report the swelling properties of chemically crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) gels with high degrees of polymerization and hydrolysis. Physical crosslinking by microcrystallites was introduced in this chemical PVA gel by a simple dehydration process. The equilibrium swelling ratio was measured in several mixed solvents, which comprised two-components: a good solvent (water or dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)), and a poor organic solvent for PVA. In the case of aqueous/organic solvent mixtures subjected to a multiple-sample test, the swelling ratio decreased continuously when the concentration of the organic solvent increased, reaching a collapsed state in the respective pure organic solvents. In the case of DMSO, starting from a swollen state, the swelling ratio rapidly decreased by between 15 and 50 mol % when the concentration of the organic compound increased in a single-sample test. To understand the hysteresis phenomenon, the swelling ratio was measured in a DMSO/acetone mixed solvent, starting from a collapsed state in acetone. The reversibility of swelling in response to successive concentration cycles between DMSO and acetone was examined. As a result, an irreversible swelling behavior was observed in the first cycle, and the swelling ratio in acetone after the first cycle became larger than the initial ratio. Subsequently, the swelling ratio changed reversibly, with a large hysteresis near a specific molar ratio of DMSO/acetone of 60/40. The microstructures were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy during the cycles. The irreversible swelling behavior and hysteresis are discussed in terms of the destruction and re-formation of additional physical crosslinking in the chemical PVA gels.

Abstract
Deformities in tissues and organs can be treated by using tissue engineering approach offering the development of biologically functionalized scaffolds from a variety of polymer blends which mimic the extracellular matrix and allow adjusting the material properties to meet the defect architecture. In recent years, research interest has been shown towards the development of chitosan (CS) based biomaterials for tissue engineering applications, because of its minimal foreign body reactions, intrinsic antibacterial property, biocompatibility, biodegradability and ability to be molded into various geometries and forms thereby making it suitable for cell ingrowth and conduction. The present work involves the fabrication of nanofibrous scaffold from CS and poly(vinyl alcohol) blends by free-surface electrospinning method. The morphology and functional characteristics of the developed scaffolds were assessed by field emission scanning electron microscopy and fourier transformed infra-red spectra analysis. The morphological analysis showed the average fiber diameter was 269 nm and thickness of the mat was 200-300 µm. X-ray diffraction study confirmed the crystalline nature of the prepared scaffolds, whereas hydrophilic characteristic of the prepared scaffolds was confirmed by measured contact angle. The scaffolds possess an adequate biodegradable, swelling and mechanical property that is found desirable for tissue engineering applications. The cell study using umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells has confirmed the in vitro biocompatibility and cell supportive property of the scaffold thereby depicting their potentiality for future clinical applications.

Abstract
Active antioxidant food packaging films were developed by incorporation of apple pomace (AP) with 1, 5, 10, and 30 % (w/w) into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix. A complete thermal, structural, mechanical and functional characterization was carried out. The findings of this study showed that the incorporation of AP into PVA films enhanced the total phenolic content and antioxidant properties. As regards the physical properties, higher AP content incorporated into PVA films revealed significantly lower tensile strength, elongation at break and increase in thickness. PVA-AP films exhibited lower transparency value compared to control film. The thermal stability of PVA-AP films was improved and grew with the increasing concentration of AP. FTIR spectra indicated that protein-polyphenol interactions were involved in the PVA-AP films. Rough surface and compact-structure were observed in PVA-AP films. The storage study of soybean oil at 60 °C in PVA-AP pouch showed the antioxidant activity and the effectiveness for delaying its lipid oxidation.

Abstract
Chitosan/nylon6/polyurethane foam (CS/Ny6/PUF) ternary blend was prepared and chemically cross-linked with glutaraldehyde. Structural, thermal and morphological studies were performed for the prepared ternary blends. Characterizations of the ternary blends were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The FTIR results showed that the strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds took place between CS, Ny6 and PUF. TGA and DSC studies reveal that the thermal stability of the blend is enhanced by glutaraldehyde as crosslinking agent. Results of XRD indicated that the relative crystalline of pure CS film was reduced when the polymeric network was reticulated by glutaraldehyde. Finally, the results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated that the morphology of the blend is rough and heterogeneous, further it confirms the interaction between the functional groups of the blend components.

Abstract
The present article discusses the synthesis, characterization and haemocompatibility behaviour of the psyllium-PVA hydrogels prepared by chemical method in the presence of N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide. These hydrogels have been characterized by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy, thermo gravimetric analysis, swelling and drug release studies. The release of model drug rabeprazole sodium from the drug loaded hydrogels occurred through non-Fickian diffusion mechanism. Psyllium itself acts as anti-ulcer agent and release of rabeprazole from the drug loaded hydrogels may enhance the curing potential of the drug delivery device. The haemocompatibility was evaluated by studying the blood interactions with hydrogels with reference to thrombogenicity and haemolytic potential. Thrombogenicity results indicate that hydrogels are non-thrombogenic as the weight of clot formed and thrombus percentage for hydrogels was less than the positive control. The haemolytic index has been observed <5%. These observations indicate that these hydrogels are haemo-compatible and hence could be used for oral administration of antiulcer drugs.

Abstract
CMC and CMC-PVA were blended either with type I collagen, BSA or CS to obtain biocompatible membranes for evaluation as potential hepatocyte culture substrates. Pure and modified forms of CMC showed distinct surface, mechanical, and cell attachment properties. While the hydrophilicity decreased, the mechanical stability and the porosity of CMC membranes increased after blending. Serum proteins were adsorbed by all types of membranes. Among eight membranes tested, collagen-modified CMC was found to be a suitable membrane material for hepatocyte culture, in terms of mechanical and cell interaction properties.
