Validation of the Malay version of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS-M) among patients with cancer in Malaysia

BACKGROUND

The well-being and adaptive functioning of patients with cancer depend on their perception of social support. To accurately assess and understand the impact of social support in a diverse population, validated measurement tools are essential. This study aimed to adapt and validate the Malay version of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS-M) among patients with cancer in Malaysia.

METHODS

A total of 346 cancer patients with mixed disease types were recruited and completed the socio-demographic and clinical characteristics questionnaire and the MSPSS-M. The MSPSS-M was assessed for internal consistency, construct validity, face, content, convergent, discriminant validity, and confirmatory factor analyses.

RESULTS

The MSPSS-M and its three domains demonstrated good internal consistency with Cronbach's α ranging from 0.900 to 0.932. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of the MSPSS-M supported the three-factor model of the original English version of the MSPSS. The MSPSS-M also exhibited good convergent validity and discriminant validity.

CONCLUSION

The MSPSS-M demonstrates favorable psychometric properties among patients with cancer in Malaysia. The validation of the MSPSS-M provides a culturally adapted and linguistically valid instrument to assess perceived social support among Malay-speaking patients with cancer in Malaysia.

Validation of Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) in Vietnamese Among People Living with HIV/AIDS

Social support plays a vital role in the health of HIV/AIDS patients, but there needs to be a validated instrument to measure social support in Vietnam. This cross-sectional study was to validate a Vietnamese translation of the Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale (MSPSS). The study had three stages: [1] translation to Vietnamese, [2] pilot testing, and [3] validation of the translation. Stage 1, including forward and backward translation by four independent translators, resulted in a good content validity translation. Pilot testing was done on 30 HIV/AIDS patients: the translation was understandable, and no change was required. Five hundred HIV/AIDS patients were recruited in stage 3. The translation had excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha: 0.90), good test-retest reliability (intra-class correlation coefficient: 0.95), and good concurrent validity. Construct validity was well established by confirmatory factor analysis. The Vietnamese translation of the MSPSS is reliable and valuable for measuring perceived social support.

Assessing the Psychometric Properties of the Chinese Version of Ten-Item Personality Inventory (TIPI) Among Medical College Students

Objective

The Ten-Item Personality Inventory (TIPI) was designed as a brief instrument of the Big Five personality traits. This study aimed to explore the internal consistency and structural validity of the Chinese version of TIPI (TIPI-C) in medical college students.

Methods

A cross-sectional study was conducted in 11 provinces of China. Spearman–Brown coefficient, standardized Cronbach’s α coefficient, and Cronbach’s α coefficient were applied to estimate the internal consistency. Spearman–Brown coefficient was applied to estimate split-half reliability. Principal components analysis (PCA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used to identify the structural validity.

Results

A total of 2223 medical college students recruited from different regions of China were included. The Spearman–Brown coefficients of TIPI-C ranged from 0.129 to 0.786 and the Cronbach’s α coefficients ranged from 0.119 to 0.785. The split-half reliability of the Spearman–Brown coefficient was 0.508. The latent structure of Extraversion, Emotional Stability, and Conscientiousness complied with the intended structure, and the internal consistency coefficients of these three traits were supported. However, the internal consistency coefficients of Agreeableness and Openness were low and the structural validity was not supported.

Conclusion

TIPI-C primarily stands out as a feasible instrument for brief measurements of the Extraversion, Emotional Stability, and Conscientiousness domains. Further research is required to evaluate the concurrent validity and the test–retest reliability of TIPI-C in different populations and potentially modify the instrument to be more suitable for the Chinese population.

Prevalence and Related Factors of Anxiety Among University Teachers 1 Year After the COVID-19 Pandemic Outbreak in China: A Multicenter Study

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of anxiety among university teachers 1 year after the onset of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and provide empirical evidence of psychological intervention.

METHODS

A multicenter study was conducted to examine the prevalence of anxiety among 10,302 teachers in 21 Chinese universities from February 12 to April 23, 2021. The generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item Scale (GAD-7) was used to assess symptoms of anxiety. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to analyze the relationship between potential influence and anxiety symptoms.

RESULTS

The overall prevalence of anxiety was 40.0% 1 year after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which was found to be higher in women than in men (41.32% vs. 38.22%; p < 0.0001). The multivariate logistic regression showed that being the female (OR = 1.207; 95%CI: 1.103-1.318), age ≥60 years (OR = 2.004; 95%CI: 1.128-3.560), being married (OR = 1.319; 95%CI: 1.150-1.513), and poor family economic status (OR = 1.580; 95%CI: 1.321-1.891) were significantly associated with anxiety. Participants with moderate, slight, or no impact of COVID-19 on life (OR for moderate, 0.557; 95%CI, 0.508-0.611; OR for slight/no, 0.377; 95%CI, 0.323-0.439) showed a reduced risk of anxiety compared to those who reported a significant effect.

CONCLUSIONS

Symptoms of anxiety were found in about two-fifths of Chinese university teachers 1 year after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our findings suggest that the government should improve the dynamic tracking of mental health and adopt long-term intervention strategies.

Psychometric Properties of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) Among Family Caregivers of People with Schizophrenia in China

INTRODUCTION

The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) is one of the most widely used scales for social support. Although previous studies have shown good reliability and concurrent validity, conflicting evidence exists on its factor structures.

AIM

To validate the MSPSS among caregivers of people with schizophrenia in China and assess its factor structure.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted of 449 family caregivers in 12 communities for psychometric testing, eg, internal consistency reliability, test-retest reliability, construct validity, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA).

RESULTS

The MSPSS showed good internal consistency with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.95, good test-retest reliability with intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of 0.91, and kappa ranging from 0.62 to 0.71. Concurrent validity was supported by its negative correlations with perceived stress, and significant positive correlations with caregiving rewarding feelings, family functioning, and coping. EFA yielded a two-factor structure (family vs non-family), while CFA generally supported a three-factor structure (family, friends, and significant others).

CONCLUSION

Our findings show good psychometric properties of the MSPSS among caregivers of people with schizophrenia in China. EFA yields two-factor structure and CFA yields three factors consistent with the theory underlying the measure's development.

Factors Influencing the Quality of Life of Empty Nesters: Empirical Evidence from Southwest China

Quality of life is a widely accepted concept based on the notion that people’s lives have been subject to rapid development and industrialization. This study aims to explore the impact of different factors on the quality of life of empty nesters in Southwest China. The main factors explored are resilience and social supports (SS), highlighted here from different perspectives. Moreover, the correlations between other variables and quality of life are shown here. This study experimented with a hierarchical multiple regression model from survey data with 3583 valid responses. It argued that both resilience and social supports, including family members and friends, are significantly correlated with the Chinese empty nesters’ quality of life. Family support and friend support play a significant mediating role in the association between resilience and quality of life. However, neither government nor nongovernmental support significantly influences the quality of life. Therefore, the hypothetical recommendations of this study have been partially confirmed. The findings of this study provide a more comprehensive understanding of the overall mental and physical health of Chinese empty nesters.

Resilience and quality of life among empty nesters in China: the mediating role of the source of support

This study aims to explore the correlations among resilience, social support, and quality of life (QOL) in empty nesters to comprehend whether various sources of social support indirectly affected the correlation between resilience and QOL. We used hierarchical multiple regression analysis and structural equation modeling method in this study. Resilience and support from both family members and friends significantly correlated with the QOL. Besides, both types of support played vital roles in the mediating effects on the correlation between resilience and QOL among empty nesters residing in China. Hence, the hypothesis proposed was confirmed partially. Furthermore, this study offers a comprehensive understanding of overall mental and physical health among empty nesters.

Development and initial validation of the chronic hepatitis B quality of life instrument (CHBQOL) among Chinese patients

PURPOSE

This study developed and tested preliminary measurement properties of a Chinese scale specifically designed to measure HRQOL in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHBQOL).

METHODS

We conducted 94 individual interviews with CHB patients to solicit items and five hepatitis expert interviews along with three rounds of cognitive interviews to identify problems with relevance and understanding of content. A cross-sectional validation study was then conducted to evaluate measurement properties (n = 578). Factor analysis was used to determine the latent structure of the scale. Reliability was evaluated through Cronbach's alpha coefficients and intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs). Measurement model adequacy, convergent, discriminant, and known-groups validity were also examined.

RESULTS

A scale of 30 items was drafted. After item reduction, the remaining 23 items were assigned to the CHBQOL Somatic symptoms, Emotional symptoms, Belief and Social stigma domains, which had acceptable goodness of fit (χ²/df = 3.13, GFI = 0.90, AGFI = 0.88, RMSEA = 0.06, SRMR = 0.05). All the CHBQOL domains had satisfactory reliability with Cronbach's α coefficients ranging from 0.73 to 0.91 and ICCs were higher than 0.70 except for Belief domain (ICC = 0.54). Convergent and discriminant validity were acceptable as supported by significant item-domain correlations (0.64-0.90). In general, the correlations between CHBQOL and the SF-36 dimensions met hypotheses. Significant differences were found by mean scores in the subgroups of demographic and clinical variables, supporting the known-groups validity.

CONCLUSIONS

The CHBQOL instrument proved to be an appropriate tool for assessing HRQOL among Chinese CHB patients.
