Phytoremediation of cadmium by the facultative halophyte plant Bolboschoenus maritimus (L.) Palla, at different salinities

Potential ecological risks of heavy metals and Cd accumulation characteristics of Suaeda salsa under different Cd input and water logging conditions in the Yellow River estuary, China

To improve the remediation of heavy metal pollution by typical wetland vegetation and maintain the health of wetland ecosystems under the water-sediment regulation scheme (WSRS) application, we evaluated the potential ecological risk of heavy metals in surface sediment in the Yellow River estuary affected by the WSRS. The ranges of Cr, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb content in surface sediment were 52.44-100.80 mg·kg-1 dry weight (DW), 16.38-21.19 mg·kg-1 DW, 64.77-255.50 mg·kg-1 DW, 0.12-0.24 mg·kg-1 DW, and 5.40-8.63 mg·kg-1 DW, respectively, and potential ecological risk coefficients showed that Cd was associated with moderate potential risk. We further examined effects of Cd in a greenhouse experiment to explore the influence of short-term Cd input and water logging condition changes induced by WSRS on the Cd absorption characteristics of Suaeda salsa (L.) Pall in the Yellow River estuary. The results showed that total biomass decreased but Cd content in tissue of S. salsa increased with increasing Cd input and the accumulation factor reached maximum values at 100 μg·L-1 of Cd, indicating that S. salsa efficiently accumulated Cd. Water logging depth significantly affected S. salsa growth and Cd absorption with deeper water logging being detrimental to growth. The interaction effect of Cd input and water logging depth on Cd content and accumulation factor was significant. These results suggest that WSRS caused short-term heavy metal input and changes in water conditions affect wetland vegetation growth and heavy metal absorption in the downstream estuary.

The complete chloroplast genome sequence of Bolboschoenus planiculmis (Cyperaceae)

Bolboschoenus planiculmis is a typical wetland sedge with both ecological and agricultural value. We report the first complete chloroplast genome sequence of this species. The total genome size is 186,539 bp, containing a large single-copy region (LSC) of 104,654 bp, a small single copy region (SSC) of 9,659 bp and two inverted repeats (IRs) of 36,113 bp by each. The GC content is 33.59%. The genome encodes 105 unique genes, including 71 protein-coding genes, 30 tRNA genes, and 4 rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis shows this species has a strong sister relationship with Cyperus. Our work could be helpful in understanding the evolution of Cyperaceae.

Loci and natural alleles for cadmium-mediated growth responses revealed by a genome wide association study and transcriptome analysis in rice

BACKGROUND

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal that is harmful to the environment and human health. Cd pollution threatens the cultivation of rice (Oryza sativa L.) in many countries. Improving rice performance under Cd stress could potentially improve rice productivity.

RESULTS

In this study, 9 growth traits of 188 different cultivated rice accessions under normal and Cd stress conditions were found to be highly variable during the seedling stage. Based on ~3.3 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), 119 Cd-mediated growth response (CGR) quantitative trait loci (QTL) were identified by a genome-wide association study (GWAS), 55 of which have been validated by previously reported QTL and 64 were new CGR loci. Combined with the data from the GWAS, transcriptome analysis, gene annotations from the gene ontology (GO) Slim database, and annotations and functions of homologous genes, 148 CGR candidate genes were obtained. Additionally, several reported genes have been found to play certain roles in CGRs. Seven Cd-related cloned genes were found among the CGR genes. Natural elite haplotypes/alleles in these genes that increased Cd tolerance were identified by a haplotype analysis of a diverse mini core collection. More importantly, this study was the first to uncover the natural variations of 5 GST genes that play important roles in CGRs.

CONCLUSION

The exploration of Cd-resistant rice germplasm resources and the identification of elite natural variations related to Cd-resistance will help improve the tolerance of current major rice varieties to Cd, as well as provide raw materials and new genes for breeding Cd-resistant varieties.

Miscanthus accessions distinctively accumulate cadmium for largely enhanced biomass enzymatic saccharification by increasing hemicellulose and pectin and reducing cellulose CrI and DP

In this study, total eight distinct Miscanthus accessions were collected from the cadmium (Cd)-supplied soil pots, and mild alkali pretreatments (0.5%, 1% NaOH) were then performed to enhance biomass enzymatic saccharification. Due to large Cd accumulation, all Miscanthus accessions showed significantly reduced cellulose levels and features (CrI, DP) with much increased hemicellulose and pectin contents in the mature stems. Under mild alkali pretreatments, all Miscanthus samples exhibited largely increased hexoses yields released from enzymatic hydrolysis, and one desirable accession had an almost complete biomass saccharification with the hexoses yield at 100% (% cellulose). Notably, the biomass residues remained from enzymatic hydrolysis upon 1% NaOH pretreatment could absorb 73-96% Cd (% of total), suggesting an applicable approach for Cd phyto-remediation. Hence, a hypothetic model was proposed to elucidate that the enhanced biomass saccharification should be mainly due to much reduced cellulose CrI and DP in the Cd-accumulated Miscanthus accessions.

Field crops (Ipomoea aquatica Forsk. and Brassica chinensis L.) for phytoremediation of cadmium and nitrate co-contaminated soils via rotation with Sedum alfredii Hance

Phytoremediation coupled with crop rotation (PCC) is a feasible strategy for remediation of contaminated soil without interrupting crop production. The objective of this study was to develop a PCC technology system for greenhouse fields co-contaminated with Cd and nitrate using hyperaccumulator Sedum alfredii. In this system, endophytic bacterium M002 inoculation, CO₂ fertilization, and fermentation residue were continuously applied to improve the growth of S. alfredii, and low-accumulator Ipomoea aquatica and low-accumulator Brassica chinensis were rotated under reasonable water management. These comprehensive management practices were shown to increase S. alfredii biomass and Cd uptake and reduce Cd and nitrate concentration in I. aquatica and B. chinensis. This crop rotating system could remove 56.5% total Cd, 62.3% DTPA extractable Cd, and 65.4% nitrate, respectively, from the co-contaminated soil in 2 years of phytoremediation, and is an effective way of remediating moderately co-contaminated soil by Cd and nitrate.
