Scale-up of microalgal systems for decarbonization and bioproducts: Challenges and opportunities

The threat of global climate change presents a significant challenge for humanity. Microalgae-based carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technology has emerged as a promising solution to this global issue. This review aims to comprehensively evaluate the current advancements in scale-up of microalgae cultivation and its applications, specifically focusing on decarbonization from flue gases, organic wastewater remediation, and biogas upgrading. The study identifies critical challenges that need to be addressed during the scale-up process and evaluates the economic viability of microalgal CCU within the carbon market. Additionally, it analyzes the commercial status of microalgae-derived products and highlights those with high market demand. This review serves as a crucial resource for researchers, industry professionals, and policymakers to develop and implement innovative approaches to enhance the efficiency of microalgae-based CO2 utilization while addressing the challenges associated with the scale-up of microalgae technologies.

Mitigation approaches and techniques for combustion power plants flue gas emissions: A comprehensive review

Population growth and urbanization are driving energy demand. Despite the development of renewable energy technologies, most of this demand is still met by fossil fuels. Flue gases are the main air pollutants from combustion power plants. These pollutants include particulate matter (PM), sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and carbon oxides (COx). The release of these pollutants has adverse effects on human health and the environment, including serious damage to the human respiratory system, acid rain, climate change, and global warming. In this review, a wide range of conventional and new technologies that have the potential to be used in the combustion power plant sector to manage and reduce flue gas pollutants have been examined. Nowadays, conventional approaches to emissions control and management, which focus primarily on post-combustion techniques, face several challenges despite their widespread use and commendable effectiveness. Therefore, studies that have proposed alternative approaches to achieve improved and more efficient methods are reviewed. The results show that new advances such as novel PM collectors, attaining an efficiency of nearly 100 % for submicron particles, microwave systems, boasting an efficiency of nearly 90 % for NO and over 95 % for SO2, electrochemical systems achieving above 90 % efficiency for NOx reduction, non-thermal plasma processes demonstrating an efficiency close to 90 % for NOx, microalgae-based methods with efficiency ranging from 80 % to 99 % for CO2, and wet scrubbing, exhibit considerable potential in addressing the shortcomings of conventional systems. Furthermore, the integration of hybrid methods, particularly in regions prioritizing environmental concerns over economic considerations, holds promise for enhanced control and removal of flue gas pollutants with superior efficiency.

Unlocking the potential of microalgae bio-factories for carbon dioxide mitigation: A comprehensive exploration of recent advances, key challenges, and energy-economic insights

Microalgae are promising alternatives to mitigate atmospheric CO₂ owing to their fast growth rates, resilience in the face of adversity and ability to produce a wide range of products, including food, feed supplements, chemicals, and biofuels. However, to fully harness the potential of microalgae-based carbon capture technology, further advancements are required to overcome the associated challenges and limitations, particularly with regards to enhancing CO₂ solubility in the culture medium. This review provides an in-depth analysis of the biological carbon concentrating mechanism and highlights the current approaches, including species selection, optimization of hydrodynamics, and abiotic components, aimed at improving the efficacy of CO₂ solubility and biofixation. Moreover, cutting-edge strategies such as gene mutation, bubble dynamics and nanotechnology are systematically outlined to elevate the CO₂ biofixation capacity of microalgal cells. The review also evaluates the energy and economic feasibility of using microalgae for CO₂ bio-mitigation, including challenges and prospects for future development.

Recent advances in CO2 fixation by microalgae and its potential contribution to carbon neutrality

Many countries and regions have set their schedules to achieve the carbon neutrality between 2030 and 2070. Microalgae are capable of efficiently fixing CO₂ and simultaneously producing biomass for multiple applications, which is considered one of the most promising pathways for carbon capture and utilization. This work reviews the current research on microalgae CO₂ fixation technologies and the challenges faced by the related industries and government agencies. The technoeconomic analysis indicates that cultivation is the major cost factor. Use of waste resources such as wastewater and flue gas can significantly reduce the costs and carbon footprints. The life cycle assessment has identified fossil-based electricity use as the major contributor to the global warming potential of microalgae-based CO₂ fixation approach. Substantial efforts and investments are needed to identify and bridge the gaps among the microalgae strain development, cultivation conditions and systems, and use of renewable resources and energy.

Role of microalgae in achieving sustainable development goals and circular economy

In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) set out 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved by 2030. These goals highlight key objectives that must be addressed. Each target focuses on a unique perspective crucial to meeting these goals. Social, political, and economic issues are addressed to comprehensively review the main issues combating climate change and creating sustainable and environmentally friendly industries, jobs, and communities. Several mechanisms that involve judicious use of biological entities are among instruments that are being explored to achieve the targets of SDGs. Microalgae have an increasing interest in various sectors, including; renewable energy, food, environmental management, water purification, and the production of chemicals such as biofertilizers, cosmetics, and healthcare products. The significance of microalgae also arises from their tendency to consume CO2, which is the main greenhouse gas and the major contributor to the climate change. This work discusses the roles of microalgae in achieving the various SDGs. Moreover, this work elaborates on the contribution of microalgae to the circular economy. It was found that the microalgae contribute to all the 17th SDGs, where they directly contribute to 9th of the SDGs and indirectly contribute to the rest. The major contribution of the Microalgae is clear in SDG-6 "Clean water and sanitation", SDG-7 "Affordable and clean energy", and SDG-13 "Climate action". Furthermore, it was found that Microalgae have a significant contribution to the circular economy.

Enhancement of the immobilization on microalgae protective effects and carbamazepine removal by Chlorella vulgaris

Carbamazepine (CBZ) has drawn extensive attention due to their environmental threats. In this study, polyvinyl alcohol-sodium alginate polymers to immobilize Chlorella vulgaris (FACHB-8) were used to investigate whether immobilization can facilitate microalgae to alleviate the CBZ stress and enhance CBZ removal. The results showed that after immobilized treatment, the biomass of microalgae increased by approximately 20%, the maximum level of malondialdehyde content decreased from 28 to 13 μmol/g, and the photosynthetic capacity of F_V/F_M recovered to 90% of the control group. The CBZ removal rate increased from 67 to 84% by immobilization at a CBZ concentration of 80 mg·L^-1. The results indicated that immobilization technology can effectively protect microalgae from CBZ toxicity and improve the removal of CBZ, especially at high concentrations (> 50 mg/L). Biodegradation was the dominant pathway for microalgae to remove carbamazepine. This study added the understanding of the microalgae responses under immobilization and the interactions between immobilized microalgae and CBZ removal, thereby providing a novel insight into microalgae technology in high concentration wastewater treatments.

Physiological and transcription level responses of microalgae Auxenochlorella protothecoides to cold and heat induced oxidative stress

Temperature is a crucial factor affecting microalgae CO₂ capture and utilization. However, an in-depth understanding of how microalgae respond to temperature stress is still unclear. In particular, the regulation mechanism under opposite temperature (heat and cold) stress had not yet been reported. In this study, the physicochemical properties and transcription level of related genes of microalgae Auxenochlorella protothecoides UTEX 2341 under heat and cold stress were investigated. Heat stress (Hs) caused a drastic increase of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in UTEX 2341. As key elements responded to Hs, superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme increased by 150%, 70%, and 30% in activity, and nitric oxide (NO) grew by 409.6%, 212.5%, and 990.4% in content compared with the control at 48 h, 96 h, 168 h. Under cold stress (Cs), ROS increased in the early stage and decreased in the later stage. As key factors responded to Cs, proline (Pro) increased respectively by 285%, 383%, and 81% in content, and heat shock transcriptional factor HSFA1d increased respectively by 161%, 71%, and 204% in transcript level compared with the control at 48 h, 96 h, 168 h. Furthermore, the transcript level of antioxidant enzymes or antioxidant coding genes was consistent with the changing trend of enzymes activity or antioxidant content. Notably, both glutathione (GSH) and heat shock protein 97 (hsp 97) were up-regulated in response to Hs and Cs. In conclusion, GSH and hsp 97 were the core elements of UTEX 2341 in response to both Hs and Cs. SOD and NO were the key elements that responded to Hs, while proline and HSFA1d were the key elements that responded to Cs. This study provided a basis for the understanding of the response mechanism of microalgae under temperature stress and the improvement of the microalgae tolerance to temperature stress.

Potential of microalgae as a sustainable feed ingredient for aquaculture

An increase in fish consumption, combined with a decrease in wild fish harvest, is driving the aquaculture industry at rapid pace. Today, farmed seafood accounts for about half of all global seafood demand for human consumption. As the aquaculture industry continues to grow, so does the market for aquafeed. Currently, some of the feed ingredients are coming from low-value forage fishes (fish meal) and terrestrial plants. The production of fish meal can't be increased as it would affect the sustainability and ecosystem of the ocean. Similarly, increasing the production of terrestrial plant-based feed leads to deforestation and increased freshwater use. Hence, alternative and environmentally sustainable sources of feed ingredients need to be developed. Microalgae biomasses represent potential feed source ingredients as the cell metabolites of these microorganisms contain a blend of essential amino acids, healthy triglycerides as fat, vitamins, and pigments. In addition to serving as bulk ingredient in aquafeed, their unique array of bioactive compounds can increase the survivability of farmed species, improve coloration and quality of fillet. Microalgae has the highest areal biomass productivities among photosynthetic organisms, including fodder crops, and thus has a high commercial potential. Also, microalgal production has a low water and arable-land footprint, making microalgal-based feed environmentally sustainable. This review paper will explore the potential of producing microalgae biomass as an ingredient of aquaculture feed.

Resource recovery through bioremediation of wastewaters and waste carbon by microalgae: a circular bioeconomy approach

Microalgal biomass-based biofuels are a promising alternative to fossil fuels. Microalgal biofuels' major obstacles are the water and carbon sources for their cultivation and biomass harvest from the liquid medium. To date, an economically viable process is not available for algal based biofuels. The circular bioeconomy is an attractive concept for reuse, reduce, and recycle resources. The recovery of nutrients from waste and effluents by microalgae could significantly impact the escalating demands of energy and nutraceutical source to the growing population. Wastewaters from different sources are enriched with nutrients and carbon, and these resources can be recovered and utilized for the circular bioeconomy approach. However, the utilization of wastewaters and waste seems to be an essential strategy for mass cultivation of microalgae to minimizing freshwater consumption, carbon, nutrients cost, nitrogen, phosphorus removal, and other pollutants loads from wastewater and generating sustainable biomass for value addition for either biofuels or other chemicals. Hence, the amalgamation of wastewater treatment with the mass cultivation of microalgae improved the conventional treatment process and environmental impacts. This review provides complete information on the latest progress and developments of microalgae as potential biocatalyst for the remediation of wastewaters and waste carbon to recover resources through biomass with metabolites for various industrial applications and large-scale cultivation in wastewaters, and future perspectives are discussed.

Biomitigation of CO2 from flue gas by Scenedesmus obtusiusculus AT-UAM using a hybrid photobioreactor coupled to a biomass recovery stage by electro-coagulation-flotation

The microalga Scenedesmus obtusiusculus AT-UAM efficiently captured CO₂ from two flue gas streams in a hybrid photobioreactor located in a greenhouse. Uptake rates of CO₂, NO, and SO₂ from a formulated gas stream were 160.7 mg L^-1 day^-1, 0.73 mg L^-1 day^-1, and 1.56 mg L^-1 day^-1, respectively, with removal efficiencies of 100% for all gases. Exhaust gases of a motor generator were also removed with uptake rates of 111.4 mg L^-1 day^-1, 0.42 mg L^-1 day^-1, and 0.98 mg L^-1 day^-1, obtaining removal efficiencies of 77%, 71%, and 53% for CO₂, NO_x, and SO₂, respectively. On average, 61% of the CO₂ from both flue gas streams was assimilated as microalgal biomass. The maximum CO₂ uptake rate of 182 mg L^-1 day^-1 was achieved for formulated flue gas flow rate above 100 mL min^-1. The biomass recovery of 88% was achieved using a 20-L electro-coagulation-flotation chamber coupled to a settler with a low specific power consumption of 0.27 kWh kg^-1. The photobioreactor was operated for almost 7 months without contamination of invasive species or a decrease in the activity. It is a very encouraging result for long-term operation in flue gas treatment.
