Abstract
The use of microalgae as a source of food and pharmaceutical ingredients has garnered growing interest in recent years. Despite the rapid growth of the nutraceutical market, knowledge about the potential of bioactive molecules from microalgae remains insufficient. The present study aimed to investigate the biotechnological potential of the green microalga Desmodesmus armatus isolated from a semi-arid region of Brazil. The algal biomass was characterized in terms of gross biochemical composition, exopolysaccharide content, enzymatic inhibition capacity, and antioxidant, antibacterial, and hemolytic activities from solvents of different polarities (water, ethanol, acetone, and hexane). D armatus biomass had 40% of crude protein content, 25.94% of lipids, and 25.03% of carbohydrates. The prebiotic potential of exopolysaccharides from D armatus was demonstrated, which stimulated the growth of Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum bacteria strains. Moreover, the enzyme inhibition capacity for the proteases chymotrypsin (34.78%-45.8%) and pepsin (16.64%-27.27%), in addition to α-amylase (24.79%) and lipase (31.05%) was confirmed. The antioxidant potential varied between the different extracts, with 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl sequestration values varying between 17.51% and 63.12%, and those of the 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) method between 6.82% and 22.89%. In the antibacterial activity test, only the ethanolic extract showed inhibition against Listeria sp. (at minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC] = 256 µg mL-1). This fraction also presented the highest significant levels of hemolysis (31.88%-52.45%). In summary, the data presented in the study suggest the presence of biocompounds with biotechnological and nutraceutical potential in the D armatus biomass. Future studies may evaluate the inclusion of this biomass in foods in order to increase their biological value.

Abstract
Green synthesis of metallic nanoparticles using microalgae exposed to high CO2 atmospheres has not been studied in detail; this is of relevance in biological CO2 mitigation systems where considerable biomass is produced. In this study, we further characterized the potential of an environmental isolate Desmodesmus abundans acclimated to low and high CO2 atmospheres [low carbon acclimation (LCA) and high carbon acclimation (HCA) strains, respectively] as a platform for silver nanoparticle (AgNP) synthesis. As previously characterized, cell pellets at pH 11 were selected from the biological components tested of the different microalgae, which included the culture collection strain Spirulina platensis. AgNP characterization showed superior performance of strain HCA components as preserving the supernatant resulted in synthesis in all pH conditions. Size distribution analysis evidenced strain HCA cell pellet platform (pH 11) as the most homogeneous AgNP population (14.9 ± 6.4 nm diameter, -32.7 ± 5.3 mV) followed by S. platensis (18.3 ± 7.5 nm, -33.9 ± 2.4 mV). In contrast, strain LCA presented a broader population where the size was above 100 nm (127.8 ± 14.8 nm, -26.7 ± 2.4 mV). Fourier-transform infrared and Raman spectroscopies showed that the reducing power of microalgae might be attributed to functional groups in the cell pellet from proteins, carbohydrates, and fatty acids and, in the supernatant, from amino acids, monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides. Microalgae AgNPs exhibited similar antimicrobial properties in the agar diffusion test against Escherichia coli. However, they were not effective against Gram (+) Lactobacillus plantarum. It is suggested that a high CO2 atmosphere potentiates components in the D. abundans strain HCA for nanotechnology applications.

Abstract
Microalgae are a kind of photoautotrophic microorganism, which are small, fast in their growth rate, and widely distributed in seawater and freshwater. They have strong adaptability to diverse environmental conditions and contain various nutrients. Many scholars have suggested that microalgae can be considered as a new food source, which should be developed extensively. More importantly, in addition to containing nutrients, microalgae are able to produce a great number of active compounds such as long-chain unsaturated fatty acids, pigments, alkaloids, astaxanthin, fucoidan, etc. Many of these compounds have been proven to possess very important physiological functions such as anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, anti-tumor functions, regulation of the metabolism, etc. This article aimed to review the physiological functions and benefits of the main microalgae-derived bioactive molecules with their physiological effects.

Abstract
Microalgae are used in flocculation processes because biopolymers are released into the culture medium. Microalgal cell growth under specific conditions (temperature, pH, luminosity, nutrients, and salinity) provides the production and release of exopolysaccharides (EPS). These biopolymers can be recovered from the medium for application as bioflocculants or used directly in cultivation as microalgae autoflocculants. The optimization of nutritional parameters, the control of process conditions, and the possibility of scaling up allow the production and industrial application of microalgal EPS. Therefore, this review addresses the potential use of EPS produced by microalgae in bioflocculation. The recovery, determination, and quantification techniques for these biopolymers are also addressed. Moreover, other technological applications of EPS are highlighted.
