Beaver (Castor fiber) activity and spatial movement in response to light and weather conditions

Animal behaviour can affect individual fitness and is influenced by exogenous and endogenous factors. Here, we investigated how light (daylight length and moonlight), weather (precipitation and temperature), age, sex and social status affected activity and movement of a semiaquatic mammal, the Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber), using GPS relocation data from 47 individuals in south-eastern Norway. Independent of daylight length, beavers had a mean daily activity time of 9:42 h and reduced their activity periods when they were older, most likely due to senescence. In line with this, older individuals also spent less time in water and moved shorter distances. Furthermore, beavers reduced their activity periods in drier weather conditions and spent less time on land during brighter nights and drier conditions, indicating a predation risk avoidance strategy. Individuals spent less time in the water during the colder parts of the year and moved shorter distances with decreasing temperature, suggesting thermal constraints. Our study adds to the increasing amount of evidence that animal behaviour is modulated by various endogenous and exogenous factors, and that weather conditions can affect their behaviour. It remains to be tested, however, how climate variability together with hunting and predation pressure affect space use and demography in species such as the Eurasian beaver.

Eye size and visual acuity influence vestibular anatomy in mammals

The semicircular canals of the inner ear detect head rotations and trigger compensatory movements that stabilize gaze and help maintain visual fixation. Mammals with large eyes and high visual acuity require precise gaze stabilization mechanisms because they experience diminished visual functionality at low thresholds of uncompensated motion. Because semicircular canal radius of curvature is a primary determinant of canal sensitivity, species with large canal radii are expected to be capable of more precise gaze stabilization than species with small canal radii. Here, we examine the relationship between mean semicircular canal radius of curvature, eye size, and visual acuity in a large sample of mammals. Our results demonstrate that eye size and visual acuity both explain a significant proportion of the variance in mean canal radius of curvature after statistically controlling for the effects of body mass and phylogeny. These findings suggest that variation in mean semicircular canal radius of curvature among mammals is partly the result of selection for improved gaze stabilization in species with large eyes and acute vision. Our results also provide a possible functional explanation for the small semicircular canal radii of fossorial mammals and plesiadapiforms.

Topography of Photoreceptors and Retinal Ganglion Cells in the Spotted Hyena (Crocuta crocuta)

The spatial distributions of photoreceptors and retinal ganglion cells were examined in the spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta). Two populations of cones were identified by immunocytochemical labeling. The hyena retina contains approximately 2.3 million middle- to long-wavelength sensitive (M/L) cones that reach peak densities of about 7,500/mm(2) in the vicinity of the optic nerve head. A sparser population of short-wavelength sensitive (S) cones, totaling about 0.3 million, was also detected. There is a striking disparity in the spatial distributions of the two cone types with S cones achieving peak density in a region located well below the optic nerve head. The differences in the spatial distributions of the two cone types have implications both for visual sensitivity and for color vision. Hyena rods outnumber cones by about 100:1 with rod density falling off modestly along a central-peripheral gradient. Ganglion cells were identified in retinal wholemounts by Nissl staining patterns. Their distribution defines a prominent visual streak with highest spatial packing (approx. 4,200/mm(2)) in an area centralis that is located in the temporal retina. The total number of ganglion cells is estimated at about 260,000. Using standard assumptions the maximum spatial resolution of the spotted hyena is calculated to be about 8.4 cycles/degree, a value similar to estimates obtained for other terrestrial carnivores.
