One-step biohydrogen production from cassava pulp using novel enrichment of anaerobic thermophilic bacteria community

Integrated Biorefinery and Life Cycle Assessment of Cassava Processing Residue-From Production to Sustainable Evaluation

Commonly known as a subsistence culture, cassava came to be considered a commodity and key to adding value. However, this tuber's processing for starch and flour production is responsible for generating a large amount of waste that causes serious environmental problems. This biomass of varied biochemical composition has excellent potential for producing fuels (biogas, bioethanol, butanol, biohydrogen) and non-energetic products (succinic acid, glucose syrup, lactic acid) via biorefinery. However, there are environmental challenges, leading to uncertainties related to the sustainability of biorefineries. Thus, the provision of information generated in life cycle assessment (LCA) can help reduce bottlenecks found in the productive stages, making production more competitive. Within that, this review concentrates information on the production of value-added products, the environmental impact generated, and the sustainability of biorefineries.

Potato waste as feedstock to produce biohydrogen and organic acids: A comparison of acid and alkaline pretreatments using response surface methodology

The effects of physicochemical pre-treatment were evaluated on hydrogen (H₂) production and organic acids from hydrolyzed potato peel. Central composite design (CCD) and response surface methodology (RSM) were used to evaluate the effects of different substrate concentrations on a wet basis (38.8-81.2 g.L^-1) and hydrolyser ratios (6M NaOH and 30% HCl: 1.6-4.4% v.v^-1; and H₂SO₄: 2.2-7.8% v.v^-1). The experiments were conducted in batch reactors at 37 °C, using a heat-treated microbial consortium. The maximum H₂ production potential (P), lag phase (λ), and maximum H₂ production rate (R_m) were evaluated for untreated and pre-treated potato peel waste. H₂ production was positively influenced under hydrolyzed substrate concentrations ≥75 g.L^-1 in the three CCDs performed. Only the increase in the H₂SO₄ proportions (≥5% v.v^-1) had a negative influence on H₂ production. Increasing the 30% HCl and 6M NaOH proportions did not significantly influence the cumulative H₂ production. The highest hydrogen production was obtained after alkaline pre-treatment by dark fermentation (P: 762.09 mL H₂.L^-1; λ: 14.56 h; R_m: 38.39 mL H₂.L^-1.h^-1). Based on the CCD and RSM, the highest H₂ production (1060.10 mL H₂.L^-1) was observed with 81.2 g.L^-1 hydrolyzed potato peel with 3.0% v.v^-1 of 6M NaOH. The highest yield liquid metabolites were acetic (513.70 mg. g^-1 COD) and butyric acids (491.90 mg. g^-1 COD).

Thermophilic biohydrogen production strategy using agro industrial wastes: Current update, challenges, and sustainable solutions

Continuously increasing wastes management issues and the high demand of fuels to fulfill the current societal requirements is not satisfactory. In addition, severe environmental pollution caused by generated wastes and the massive consumption of fossil fuels are the main causes of global warming. In this scenario, production of hydrogen from organic wastes is a potential and one of the most feasible alternatives to resolve these issues. However, sensitivity of H₂ production at higher temperature and lack of potential substrates are the main issues which are strongly associated with such kinds of biofuels. Therefore, the present review is targeted towards the evaluation and enhancement of thermophilic biohydrogen production using organic, cellulosic wastes as promising bioresources. This review discusses about the current status, development in the area of thermophilic biohydrogen production wherein organic wastes as key substrate are being employed. The combinations of suitable organic and cellulose rich substrates, thermo-tolerant microbes, high enzymes stability may support to enhance the biohydrogen production, significantly. Further, various factors which may significantly contribute to enhance biohydrogen production have been discussed thoroughly in reference to the thermophilic biohydrogen production technology. Additionally, existing obstacles such as unfavorable thermophilic biohydrogen pathways, inefficiency of thermophilic microbiomes, genetic modifications, enzymes stability have been discussed in context to the possible limitations of thermophilic biohydrogen production strategy. Structural and functional microbiome analysis, fermentation pathway modifications via genetic engineering and the application of nanotechnology to enhance the thermophilic biohydrogen production have been discussed as the future prospective.

Microbiomes of biohydrogen production from dark fermentation of industrial wastes: current trends, advanced tools and future outlook

Biohydrogen production through dark fermentation is very attractive as a solution to help mitigate the effects of climate change, via cleaner bioenergy production. Dark fermentation is a process where organic substrates are converted into bioenergy, driven by a complex community of microorganisms of different functional guilds. Understanding of the microbiomes underpinning the fermentation of organic matter and conversion to hydrogen, and the interactions among various distinct trophic groups during the process, is critical in order to assist in the process optimisations. Research in biohydrogen production via dark fermentation is currently advancing rapidly, and various microbiology and molecular biology tools have been used to investigate the microbiomes. We reviewed here the different systems used and the production capacity, together with the diversity of the microbiomes used in the dark fermentation of industrial wastes, with a special emphasis on palm oil mill effluent (POME). The current challenges associated with biohydrogen production were also included. Then, we summarised and discussed the different molecular biology tools employed to investigate the intricacy of the microbial ecology associated with biohydrogen production. Finally, we included a section on the future outlook of how microbiome-based technologies and knowledge can be used effectively in biohydrogen production systems, in order to maximise the production output.

Establishment of the upstream processing for renewable production of hydrogen using vermicomposting-tea and molasses as substrate

This study aimed to establish the optimal operational conditions for hydrogen production using vermicomposting-tea and sugarcane molasses as substrate. The experiments were carried out by triplicate in 110 ml serological bottles, a Box-Behnken design of experiments was performed in anaerobic dark conditions. The maximal hydrogen production (HP), hydrogen production rate (HPR), and hydrogen yield (HY) attained were 1021.0 mlL^-1, 5.32 mlL^-1h^-1, and 60.3 mlL_H2^-1/g_TCC, respectively. The statistical model showed that the optimal operational conditions for pH, molasses concentration, and temperature were 6.5; 30 % (v/v) and 25 °C. The bioreactor run showed 17.202 L of hydrogen, 0.58 Lh^-1, and 77.2 ml_H2g_TCC^-1 For HP, HPR, and HY. Chemometric analysis for the volatile fatty acids obtained at the fermentation showed that only two principal components are required to explain 90 % of the variance. The representative pathways for hydrogen production were acetic and butyric acids. This study established the operational conditions for the upstream processing amenable to pilot and industrial-scale operations. Our results add value to molasses within the circular economy for hydrogen production using a novel consortium from vermicompost.

Anaerobic Digestion of Agri-Food Wastes for Generating Biofuels

Presently, fossil fuels are extensively employed as major sources of energy, and their uses are considered unsustainable due to emissions of obnoxious gases on the burning of fossil fuels, which can lead to severe environmental complications, including human health. To tackle these issues, various processes are developing to waste as a feed to generate eco-friendly fuels. The biological production of fuels is considered to be more beneficial than physicochemical methods due to their environmentally friendly nature, high rate of conversion at ambient physiological conditions, and less energy-intensive. Among various biofuels, hydrogen (H₂) is considered as a wonderful due to high calorific value and generate water molecule as end product on the burning. The H₂ production from biowaste is demonstrated, and agri-food waste can be potentially used as a feedstock due to their high biodegradability over lignocellulosic-based biomass. Still, the H₂ production is uneconomical from biowaste in fuel competing market because of low yields and increased capital and operational expenses. Anaerobic digestion is widely used for waste management and the generation of value-added products. This article is highlighting the valorization of agri-food waste to biofuels in single (H₂) and two-stage bioprocesses of H₂ and CH₄ production.
