Synthesis and characterization of amino acid-functionalized calcium phosphate nanoparticles for siRNA delivery

Synthesis of pure and doped nano-calcium phosphates using different conventional methods for biomedical applications: a review

The applications of calcium phosphates (hydroxyapatite, tetracalcium phosphate, tricalcium phosphate (alpha and beta), fluorapatite, di-calcium phosphate anhydrous, and amorphous calcium-phosphate) are increasing day by day. Calcium hydroxyapatite, commonly known as hydroxyapatite (HAp), represents a mineral form of calcium apatite. Owing to its close molecular resemblance to the mineral constituents of bones, teeth, and hard tissues, HAp is often employed in the biomedical domain. In addition, it is extensively employed in various sectors such as the remediation of water, air, and soil pollution. The key advantage of HAp lies in its potential to accommodate a wide variety of anionic and cationic substitutions. Nevertheless, HAp and tricalcium phosphate (TCP) syntheses typically involve the use of chemical precursors containing calcium and phosphorus sources and employ diverse techniques, such as solid-state, wet, and thermal methods or a combination of these processes. Researchers are increasingly favoring natural sources such as bio-waste (eggshells, oyster shells, animal bones, fish scales, etc.) as viable options for synthesizing HAp. Interestingly, the synthesis route significantly influences the morphology, size, and crystalline phase of calcium phosphates. In this review paper, we highlight both dry and wet methods, which include six commonly used synthesis methods (i.e. solid-state, mechano-chemical, wet-chemical precipitation, hydrolysis, sol-gel, and hydrothermal methods) coupled with the variation in source materials and their influence in modifying the structural morphology from a bulky state to nanoscale to explore the applications of multifunctional calcium phosphates in different formats.

The landscape of nanoparticle-based siRNA delivery and therapeutic development

Five small interfering RNA (siRNA)-based therapeutics have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), namely patisiran, givosiran, lumasiran, inclisiran, and vutrisiran. Besides, siRNA delivery to the target site without toxicity is a big challenge for researchers, and naked-siRNA delivery possesses several challenges, including membrane impermeability, enzymatic degradation, mononuclear phagocyte system (MPS) entrapment, fast renal excretion, endosomal escape, and off-target effects. The siRNA therapeutics can silence any disease-specific gene, but their intracellular and extracellular barriers limit their clinical applications. For this purpose, several modifications have been employed to siRNA for better transfection efficiency. Still, there is a quest for better delivery systems for siRNA delivery to the target site. In recent years, nanoparticles have shown promising results in siRNA delivery with minimum toxicity and off-target effects. Patisiran is a lipid nanoparticle (LNP)-based siRNA formulation for treating hereditary transthyretin-mediated amyloidosis that ultimately warrants the use of nanoparticles from different classes, especially lipid-based nanoparticles. These nanoparticles may belong to different categories, including lipid-based, polymer-based, and inorganic nanoparticles. This review briefly discusses the lipid, polymer, and inorganic nanoparticles and their sub-types for siRNA delivery. Finally, several clinical trials related to siRNA therapeutics are addressed, followed by the future prospects and conclusions.

In situ transient transfection of 3D cell cultures and tissues, a promising tool for tissue engineering and gene therapy

Various research fields use the transfection of mammalian cells with genetic material to induce the expression of a target transgene or gene silencing. It is a tool widely used in biological research, bioproduction, and therapy. Current transfection protocols are usually performed on 2D adherent cells or suspension cultures. The important rise of new gene therapies and regenerative medicine in the last decade raises the need for new tools to empower the in situ transfection of tissues and 3D cell cultures. This review will present novel in situ transfection methods based on a chemical or physical non-viral transfection of cells in tissues and 3D cultures, discuss the advantages and remaining gaps, and propose future developments and applications.

Biomedical applications of nanomaterials in the advancement of nucleic acid therapy: Mechanistic challenges, delivery strategies, and therapeutic applications

In the past few decades, substantial advancement has been made in nucleic acid (NA)-based therapies. Promising treatments include mRNA, siRNA, miRNA, and anti-sense DNA for treating various clinical disorders by modifying the expression of DNA or RNA. However, their effectiveness is limited due to their concentrated negative charge, instability, large size, and host barriers, which make widespread application difficult. The effective delivery of these medicines requires safe vectors that are efficient & selective while having non-pathogenic qualities; thus, nanomaterials have become an attractive option with promising possibilities despite some potential setbacks. Nanomaterials possess ideal characteristics, allowing them to be tuned into functional bio-entity capable of targeted delivery. In this review, current breakthroughs in the non-viral strategy of delivering NAs are discussed with the goal of overcoming challenges that would otherwise be experienced by therapeutics. It offers insight into a wide variety of existing NA-based therapeutic modalities and techniques. In addition to this, it provides a rationale for the use of non-viral vectors and a variety of nanomaterials to accomplish efficient gene therapy. Further, it discusses the potential for biomedical application of nanomaterials-based gene therapy in various conditions, such as cancer therapy, tissue engineering, neurological disorders, and infections.

Mineralized vectors for gene therapy

There is an intense interest in developing materials for safe and effective delivery of polynucleotides using non-viral vectors. Mineralization of organic templates has long been used to produce complex materials with outstanding biocompatibility. However, a lack of control over mineral growth has limited the applicability of mineralized materials to a few in vitro applications. With better control over mineral growth and surface functionalization, mineralized vectors have advanced significantly in recent years. Here, we review the recent progress in chemical synthesis, physicochemical properties, and applications of mineralized materials in gene therapy, focusing on structure-function relationships. We contrast the classical understanding of the mineralization mechanism with recent ideas of mineralization. A brief introduction to gene delivery is summarized, followed by a detailed survey of current mineralized vectors. The vectors derived from calcium phosphate are articulated and compared to other minerals with unique features. Advanced mineral vectors derived from templated mineralization and specialty coatings are critically analyzed. Mineral systems beyond the co-precipitation are explored as more complex multicomponent systems. Finally, we conclude with a perspective on the future of mineralized vectors by carefully demarcating the boundaries of our knowledge and highlighting ambiguous areas in mineralized vectors. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Therapy by gene-based medicines is increasingly utilized to cure diseases that are not alleviated by conventional drug therapy. Gene medicines, however, rely on macromolecular nucleic acids that are too large and too hydrophilic for cellular uptake. Without tailored materials, they are not functional for therapy. One emerging class of nucleic acid delivery system is mineral-based materials. The fact that they can undergo controlled dissolution with minimal footprint in biological systems are making them attractive for clinical use, where safety is utmost importance. In this submission, we will review the emerging synthesis technology and the range of new generation minerals for use in gene medicines.

RNAi-based therapeutics and tumor targeted delivery in cancer

Over the past decade, non-coding RNA-based therapeutics have proven as a great potential for the development of targeted therapies for cancer and other diseases. The discovery of the critical function of microRNAs (miRNAs) has generated great excitement in developing miRNA-based therapies. The dysregulation of miRNAs contributes to the pathogenesis of various human diseases and cancers by modulating genes that are involved in critical cellular processes, including cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, metastasis, drug resistance, and tumorigenesis. miRNA (miRNA mimic, anti-miRNA/antagomir) and small interfering RNA (siRNA) can inhibit the expression of any cancer-related genes/mRNAs with high specificity through RNA interference (RNAi), thus representing a remarkable therapeutic tool for targeted therapies and precision medicine. siRNA and miRNA-based therapies have entered clinical trials and recently three novel siRNA-based therapeutics were approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), indicating the beginning of a new era of targeted therapeutics. The successful clinical applications of miRNA and siRNA therapeutics rely on safe and effective nanodelivery strategies for targeting tumor cells or tumor microenvironment. For this purpose, promising nanodelivery/nanoparticle-based approaches have been developed using a variety of molecules for systemic administration and improved tumor targeted delivery with reduced side effects. In this review, we present an overview of RNAi-based therapeutics, the major pharmaceutical challenges, and the perspectives for the development of promising delivery systems for clinical translation. We also highlight the passive and active tumor targeting nanodelivery strategies and primarily focus on the current applications of nanoparticle-based delivery formulations for tumor targeted RNAi molecules and their recent advances in clinical trials in human cancers.

Mineralized polyplexes for gene delivery: Improvement of transfection efficiency as a consequence of calcium incubation and not mineralization

Gene therapy is an emerging field in which nucleic acids are used to control protein expression. The necessity of delivering nucleic acids to specific cell types and intracellular sites demands the use of highly specialized gene carriers. As a carrier modification technique, mineralization has been successfully used to modify viral and non-viral carriers, providing new properties that ultimately aim to increase the transfection efficiency. However, for the specific case of polyplexes used in gene therapy, recent literature shows that interaction with calcium, a fundamental step of mineralization, might be effective to increase transfection efficiency, leaving an ambiguity about of the role of mineralization for this type of gene carriers. To answer this question and to reveal the properties responsible for increasing transfection efficiency, we mineralized poly(aspartic acid) coated polyplexes at various CaCl₂ and Na₃PO₄ concentrations, and evaluated the resultant carriers for physicochemical and morphological characteristics, as well as transfection and delivery efficiency with MC3T3-E1 mouse osteoblastic cells. We found that both mineralization and calcium incubation positively affected the transfection efficiency and uptake of polyplexes in MC3T3-E1 cells. However, this effect originated from the properties achieved by polyplexes after the calcium incubation step that are maintained after mineralization, including particle size increase, improved pDNA binding, and adjustment of zeta potential. Considering that mineralization can be a longer process than calcium incubation, we find that calcium incubation might be sufficient and preferred if improved transfection efficiency in vitro is the only effect desired.

A calcium phosphate drug carrier loading with 5-fluorouracil achieving a synergistic effect for pancreatic cancer therapy

Calcium based biomaterials were widely used for drug delivery application due to their biodegradability, biocompatibility, and high drug loading capacity. Herein, amino-capped polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer was applied as a macromolecular template to form amino-modified calcium phosphate hollow sphere (CaPO-NH₂). After loading with 5-fluorouracil (5Fu), this system performed synergistic cancer chemotherapy. In this study, the 5Fu/CaPO-NH₂ particles could be efficiently uptaken by cancer cells, and then decompose into Ca²⁺ and release 5Fu drug in the cytoplasm; therefore calcium overload and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation were found in PSN1 cells that could induce cell membrane damage and elicit cell apoptosis through a series of biochemical reactions including endoplasmic reticulum stress, lipid peroxidation and mitochondrial apoptosis. In the PSN1 pancreatic cancer xenograft model, the 5Fu/CaPO-NH₂ system performed high tumor inhibition via chemotherapy and calcium overload induced apoptosis. Comparingly, the normal cells and organs were insensitive to this synergistic therapy, which indicated the well biocompatibility of delivery system. Thus, this study provided a promising CaPO-NH₂ drug delivery platform for enhanced 5Fu chemotherapeutic effect.

Induction of osteogenesis in bone tumour cells by purine-conjugated zinc-hydroxyapatite

This study aimed to improve the biocompatibility and osteogenic property of hydroxyapatite (HAP). So HAP nanoparticles were doped with zinc (Zn), and their surface was modified with a purine nucleotide, guanosine 5′-triphosphate (GTP). GTP-loaded nanoparticles (GTP@ZnHAP) were characterised by field emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared, thermogravimetric analysis, zeta potential and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy. Biological experiments revealed that GTP@ZnHAP nanoparticles were internalised by the cells, inhibiting tumour cell (osteoblast-like cells, Saos-2) expansion with an efficiency more than that observed for ZnHAP nanoparticles and GTP alone. Furthermore, Saos-2 cells were committed to differentiate into the normal osteoblast cells under the influence of GTP@ZnHAP nanoparticles demonstrated by the quantitative assessment of bone-related protein expression (Runx2 and osteocalcin) and cell morphological changes. Moreover, high-performance liquid chromatography analyses disclosed a significant enhancement of intracellular GTP content in GTP@ZnHAP-treated cells, proposing perturbation of intracellular nucleotide equilibrium during the process of osteogenesis induced by GTP@ZnHAP nanoparticles. Overall, GTP@ZnHAP exhibits a better synergistic effect on the modulation of cell growth and induction of osteogenic differentiation in osteosarcoma cells than ZnHAP nanoparticles and GTP alone do. Therefore, GTP@ZnHAP may be regarded as a promising biomaterial for the treatment of bone-related diseases.

Smart Nanocarriers for the Delivery of Nucleic Acid-Based Therapeutics: A Comprehensive Review

Nucleic acid-based therapies are promising therapeutics for the treatment of several systemic disorders, and they offer an exciting opportunity to address emerging biological challenges. The scope of nucleic acid-based therapeutics in the treatment of multiple disease states including cancers has been widened by recent progress in Ribonucleic acids (RNA) biology. However, cascades of systemic and intracellular barriers, including rapid degradation, renal clearance, and poor cellular uptake, hinder the clinical effectiveness of nucleic acid-based therapies. These barriers can be circumvented by utilizing advanced smart nanocarriers that efficiently deliver and release the encapsulated nucleic acids into the target tissues. This review describes the current status of clinical trials on nucleic acid-based therapeutics and highlights representative examples that provide an overview on the current and emerging trends in nucleic acid-based therapies. A better understanding of the design of advanced nanocarriers is essential to promote the translation of therapeutic nucleic acids into a clinical reality.

Biodegradable calcium phosphate nanoparticles for cancer therapy

Calcium phosphate is the inorganic mineral of hard tissues such as bone and teeth. Due to their similarities to the natural bone, calcium phosphates are highly biocompatible and biodegradable materials that have found numerous applications in dental and orthopedic implants and bone tissue engineering. In the form of nanoparticles, calcium phosphate nanoparticles (CaP's) can also be used as effective delivery vehicles to transfer therapeutic agents such as nucleic acids, drugs, proteins and enzymes into tumor cells. In addition, facile preparation and functionalization of CaP's, together with their inherent properties such as pH-dependent solubility provide advantages in delivery and release of these bioactive agents using CaP's as nanocarriers. In this review, the challenges and achievements in the intracellular delivery of these agents to tumor cells are discussed. Also, the most important issues in the design and potential applications of CaP-based biominerals are addressed with more focus on their biodegradability in tumor microenvironment.

Organic Phosphorous and Calcium Source Induce the Synthesis of Yolk-Shell Structured Microspheres of Calcium Phosphate with High-Specific Surface Area: Application in HEL Adsorption

Yolk-shell-structured calcium phosphate microspheres have a great potential for medical applications due to their excellent physicochemical properties and biocompatibility. However, developing a yolk-shell-structured calcium phosphate with high adsorption capability remains a challenge. Herein, a porous yolk-shell-structured microsphere (ATP-CG) of calcium phosphate with high-specific surface area [SBET = 143 m2 g-1, which is approximately three times as high as that of ATP-CL microspheres synthesized by replacing calcium source with calcium L-lactate pentahydrate (CL)] was successfully synthesized by using adenosine 5'-triphosphate disodium salt (ATP) as the phosphorous source and calcium gluconate monohydrate (CG) as calcium source through a self-templating approache. The influences of molar ratio of Ca to P (Ca/P), hydrothermal temperature, and time on the morphology of ATP-CG microspheres were also investigated. It is found that the organic calcium source and organic phosphorous source play a vital role in the formation of yolk-shell structure. Furthermore, a batch of adsorption experiments were investigated to illuminate the adsorption mechanism of two kinds of yolk-shell-structured microspheres synthesized with different calcium sources. The results show that the adsorption capacity of ATP-CG microspheres (332 ± 36 mg/g) is about twice higher than that of ATP-CL microspheres (176 ± 33 mg/g). Moreover, the higher-specific surface area caused by the calcium source and unique surface chemical properties for ATP-CG microspheres play an important role in the improvement of HEL adsorption capability. The study indicates that the as-prepared yolk-shell-structured microsphere is promising for application in drug delivery fields and provides an effective approach for improving drug adsorption capability.

Facile synthesis of biodegradable flower-like hydroxyapatite for drug and gene delivery

Controlled synthesis of hierarchical hydroxyapatite materials is a hot research topic because of the excellent biocompatibility and bioactivity of the materials. In this study, flower-like hydroxyapatite spheres (FHAPS) were facile synthesized in one pot using Al(OH)₃ as a structure-directing agent. The prepared FHAPS comprised nanosheets possessing a uniform diameter of approximately 4 µm. Notably, the FHAPS can be degraded in solutions with a pH of 5.5 for 144 h or incubated with cells for 48 h. In addition, the FHAPS have rough surfaces, which exhibit high loading contents for the anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX, 9.1%) and siRNA (2.0%). Thus, the FHAPS can effectively deliver DOX into drug-resistant breast cancer cells to exert an excellent killing effect compared with free DOX and transfect siRNA into tumor cells to interfere with the expression of the target protein. Taken together, this work successfully prepared FHAPS via a convenient synthesis route that shows high delivery efficiency for anticancer drugs and siRNA.

Calcium Phosphate Nanoparticles-Based Systems for RNAi Delivery: Applications in Bone Tissue Regeneration

Bone-related injury and disease constitute a significant global burden both socially and economically. Current treatments have many limitations and thus the development of new approaches for bone-related conditions is imperative. Gene therapy is an emerging approach for effective bone repair and regeneration, with notable interest in the use of RNA interference (RNAi) systems to regulate gene expression in the bone microenvironment. Calcium phosphate nanoparticles represent promising materials for use as non-viral vectors for gene therapy in bone tissue engineering applications due to their many favorable properties, including biocompatibility, osteoinductivity, osteoconductivity, and strong affinity for binding to nucleic acids. However, low transfection rates present a significant barrier to their clinical use. This article reviews the benefits of calcium phosphate nanoparticles for RNAi delivery and highlights the role of surface functionalization in increasing calcium phosphate nanoparticles stability, improving cellular uptake and increasing transfection efficiency. Currently, the underlying mechanistic principles relating to these systems and their interplay during in vivo bone formation is not wholly understood. Furthermore, the optimal microRNA targets for particular bone tissue regeneration applications are still unclear. Therefore, further research is required in order to achieve the optimal calcium phosphate nanoparticles-based systems for RNAi delivery for bone tissue regeneration.

Design and anti-tumor activity of self-loaded nanocarriers of siRNA

Polypeptide carriers have a good cell compatibility, rich functionality, and facile synthesis and modification, make them promising materials as siRNA vectors. Phenylalanine dipeptide (FF) has been previously assessed as an siRNA vector and showed to have two major drawbacks, namely poor water solubility and poor serum stability. Herein, the FF backbone was modified by ligating a PEG-Arg-Ala (PEG-RA) sequence at the N-terminus to increase its hydrophilicity and serum stability. Arg is a typical amino acid in the cell penetrating peptide, which can increase the efficiency of cell internalization. Ala acts as a spacer to avoid steric hindrance. The target sequence PEG-RAFF was synthesized by a solid phase peptide synthesis. The morphology, particle size, and siRNA ratio were assessed by SEM, TEM, DLS, and gel electrophoresis. Further, MCF-7 cells were used as a model and survivin-siRNA as a passenger to assess cell internalization, inhibition of gene expression rate, and apoptosis rate using confocal microscopy, real-time PCR, and flow cytometry. At a concentration of 1 mg/mL, PEG-RAFF took the form of nanovesicles with a diameter of 154.74 ± 14.36 nm. The optimal PEG-RAFF to siRNA ratio was N/P = 100:1. Compared with the control group, the red fluorescence of TAMRA(Carboxytetramethylrhodamine, Red fluorescence)-siRNA transfected into cells was clearly visible in the confocal microscope image. The inhibition rate of survivin was 67.99 ± 10.31%, and the apoptotic rate was 16.07%. Therefore, PEG-RAFF has potential as an siRNA carrier in cancer treatment.

Biomolecule-assisted green synthesis of nanostructured calcium phosphates and their biomedical applications

Calcium phosphates (CaPs) are ubiquitous in nature and vertebrate bones and teeth, and have high biocompatibility and promising applications in various biomedical fields. Nanostructured calcium phosphates (NCaPs) are recognized as promising nanocarriers for drug/gene/protein delivery owing to their high specific surface area, pH-responsive degradability, high drug/gene/protein loading capacity and sustained release performance. In order to control the structure and surface properties of NCaPs, various biomolecules with high biocompatibility such as nucleic acids, proteins, peptides, liposomes and phosphorus-containing biomolecules are used in the synthesis of NCaPs. Moreover, biomolecules play important roles in the synthesis processes, resulting in the formation of various NCaPs with different sizes and morphologies. At room temperature, biomolecules can play the following roles: (1) acting as a biocompatible organic phase to form biomolecule/CaP hybrid nanostructured materials; (2) serving as a biotemplate for the biomimetic mineralization of NCaPs; (3) acting as a biocompatible modifier to coat the surface of NCaPs, preventing their aggregation and increasing their colloidal stability. Under heating conditions, biomolecules can (1) control the crystallization process of NCaPs by forming biomolecule/CaP nanocomposites before heating; (2) prevent the rapid and disordered growth of NCaPs by chelating with Ca2+ ions to form precursors; (3) provide the phosphorus source for the controlled synthesis of NCaPs by using phosphorus-containing biomolecules. This review focuses on the important roles of biomolecules in the synthesis of NCaPs, which are expected to guide the design and controlled synthesis of NCaPs. Moreover, we will also summarize the biomedical applications of NCaPs in nanomedicine and tissue engineering, and discuss their current research trends and future prospects.

DNA-Templated Strontium-Doped Calcium Phosphate Nanoparticles for Gene Delivery in Bone Cells

Calcium phosphates (CaPs), constituents of the inorganic phase of natural bone, are highly biocompatible and biodegradable. Strontium (Sr) regulates the formation and resorption of bone. Incorporation of Sr into CaPs may target genes of interest to bone cells while regulating their function. In this work, we developed a single-step synthesis method to prepare Sr-doped CaP nanoparticles (SrCaP-DNA NPs) by using DNA as a template for controlling the mineralization and the stability of the colloidal solution. The resulting nanoparticles were monodispersed with well-controlled size, morphology, and composition. By using this method, we were able to fabricate CaP NPs with varying contents of Sr2+. We demonstrated that the stability of CaP NPs in extracellular environments increased when Sr2+ partially replaced Ca2+ in CaP NPs. We showed that the cellular uptake of SrCaP-DNA NPs and the efficiency of gene transfer and alkaline phosphatase activity in human fetal osteoblastic cell line (hFOB1.19) were dependent on the content of Sr2+ in NPs. Together with other studies, our results suggest SrCaP-DNA NPs can be optimized for targeted gene transfer to regulate function of bone cells, enabling applications such as bone tissue engineering and treating bone diseases.

Advances in Therapeutic Implications of Inorganic Drug Delivery Nano-Platforms for Cancer

Numerous nanoparticles drug delivery systems for therapeutic implications in cancer treatment are in preclinical development as conventional chemotherapy has several drawbacks. A chemotherapeutic approach requires high doses of chemotherapeutic agents with low bioavailability, non-specific targeting, and above all, development of multiple drug resistance. In recent years, inorganic nano-drug delivery platforms (NDDPs; with a metal core) have emerged as potential chemotherapeutic systems in oncology. One of the major goals of developing inorganic NDDPs is to effectively address the targeted anti-cancer drug(s) delivery related problems by carrying the therapeutic agents to desired tumors sites. In this current review, we delve into summarizing the recent developments in targeted release of anti-cancer drugs loaded in inorganic NDDPs such as mesoporous silica nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, layered double hydroxides, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and calcium phosphate nanoparticles together with highlighting their therapeutic performance at tumor sites.

A Systematic Study of the Effect of pH on the Initialization of Ca-deficient Hydroxyapatite to β-TCP Nanoparticles

The formation of β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) nanoparticles via a wet precipitation technique was studied in a systematical way, taking reaction pH and sintering temperature parameters into account. A full transformation of Ca-deficient hydroxyapatite (CDHA) to β-TCP at 750 °C in under 3 hours from Ca++ and PO₄3- precursor solutions prepared under a pH of 5.5 was observed. For pH values higher than 6.5, CDHA can only partially transform into β-TCP and only at temperatures higher than 750 °C confirmed using X-Ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The morphologies of the particles were also examined by Transmission electron microscopy. The lower temperatures and the shorter sintering time allow for a fine needle-like morphology, but with a high crystallinity, likely eliminating the possibility of excessive grain growth that is otherwise expected to occur under high-temperature treatment with long process times. We show that sintering of nanostructured, high crystallinity β-TCP at relatively low temperatures is possible via adjustment of the precursor solution parameters. Such an outcome is important for the use of β-TCP with a fine morphology imitating that of the skeletal tissues, enhancing the osteointegration of a base, load-bearing alloy to the host tissue. MTT analysis was used to test the effect of the obtained β-TCP particles on the viability of MG-63 human osteoblast-like cells.
