Abstract
The health benefits of ginger rhizomes (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) have been known for centuries. Recently, ginger root has gained more attention due to its anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities. Many of the bioactive components of ginger may have therapeutic benefits in treating inflammatory arthritis. Their properties seem especially helpful in treating diseases linked to persistent inflammation and pain, symptoms present in the course of the most prevalent rheumatic diseases, such as osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This review analyzes the current knowledge regarding ginger's beneficial anti-inflammatory effect in both in vitro and in vivo studies as well as clinical trials. The drug delivery systems to improve ginger's bioavailability and medicinal properties are discussed. Understanding ginger's beneficial aspects may initiate further studies on improving its bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy and achieving more a comprehensive application in medicine.

Abstract
Curcumin is a natural compound found in turmeric that exhibits diverse biological activities. However, its poor bioavailability limits its therapeutic application, which has led to the development of various bioavailability-improved formulations. In this methodological study, we analyzed whether systematic reviews on curcumin considered the bioavailability of systemic oral curcumin formulations when synthesizing evidence from human clinical trials. A total of 171 systematic reviews published between 2003 and 2022 were included in the study. From the included studies, we extracted data on study characteristics; type of curcumin; methods; and reporting regarding bioavailability, funding, and conflict of interest. Our results show that systematic reviews rarely consider the variable bioavailability of tested curcumin formulations. Relevant statistical subgroup and/or sensitivity analyses were reported in the methods and results of only 3.5% and 6.4% of reviews, respectively. However, more reviews mentioned bioavailability in their discussion (57%) or conclusion (13%). The detailed analysis of the included systematic reviews suggests that there is broad recognition of product bioavailability as a crucial factor affecting the health effects of curcumin, which is not accompanied by adequate evidence synthesis. Therefore, the results of most systematic reviews on orally administered curcumin should be taken with caution.

Abstract
This study aimed to perform a systematic review to evaluate the effect of phytochemical consumption on the cardiometabolic parameters of prediabetic patients. A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus and ISI Web of Science, and Google Scholar up to June 2022 to find randomized controlled trials investigating the effects of phytochemicals alone or in combination with other nutraceuticals on prediabetic patients. Twenty-three studies with 31 treatment arms comprising 2177 individuals were included in this study. Totally, in 21 arms, phytochemicals had positive effects on at least one measured cardiometabolic factor. In 13 out of 25 arms, fasting blood glucose (FBG) and in 10 out of 22 arms, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) significantly decreased compared with the control group. Furthermore, phytochemicals had beneficial effects on 2-h postprandial and postprandial glucose, serum insulin, insulin sensitivity, and insulin resistance as well as inflammatory factors including high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), and interleukin 6 (IL-6). Triglyceride (TG) was the abundant improved factor in the lipid profile. However, no sufficient evidence for notable positive effects of phytochemicals on blood pressure and anthropometry indices was observed. Phytochemical supplementation may have beneficial impacts on prediabetic patients by ameliorating glycemic status.

Abstract
Objective Several meta-analyses have shown that curcumin can reduce inflammatory biomarkers, but the findings are inconsistent. The objective of the present umbrella meta-analysis was to provide a more accurate estimate of the overall effects of curcumin on inflammatory biomarkers. Methods The following international databases were systematically searched until March 20, 2022: PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. A random-effects model was applied to evaluate the effects of curcumin on inflammatory biomarkers. Meta-analysis studies investigating the effects of curcumin supplementation on inflammatory biomarkers with corresponding effect sizes (ES) and confidence intervals (CI) were included in the umbrella meta-analysis. GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) was used to evaluate the certainty of evidence. Results A meta-analyses of ten studies with 5,870 participants indicated a significant decrease in C-reactive protein (CRP) (ES = -0.74; 95% CI: -1.11, -0.37, p < 0.001; I2 = 62.1%, p=0.015), interleukin 6 (IL-6) (ES = -1.07; 95% CI: -1.71, -0.44, p < 0.001; I2 = 75.6%, p < 0.001), and tumour necrosis factor α (TNF-α) levels (ES: -1.92, 95% CI: -2.64, -1.19, p < 0.0; I2 = 18.1%, p=0.296) following curcumin supplementation. Greater effects on CRP and TNF-α were evident in trials with a mean age >45 years and a sample size >300 participants. Conclusion The umbrella of meta-analysis suggests curcumin as a promising agent in reducing inflammation as an adjunctive therapeutic approach in diseases whose pathogenesis is related to a higher level of inflammatory biomarkers.

Abstract
Curcumin, a traditional Chinese medicine extracted from natural plant rhizomes, has become a candidate drug for the treatment of different diseases due to its anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antioxidant, and antibacterial activities. Curcumin is generally beneficial to improve human health with anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties as well as antitumor and immunoregulatory properties. Inflammasomes are NLR family, pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) proteins that are activated in response to a variety of stress signals and that promote the proteolytic conversion of pro-interleukin-1β and pro-interleukin-18 into active forms, which are central mediators of the inflammatory response; inflammasomes can also induce pyroptosis, a type of cell death. The NLRP3 protein is involved in a variety of inflammatory pathologies, including neurological and autoimmune disorders, lung diseases, atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, and many others. Different functional foods may have preventive and therapeutic effects in a wide range of pathologies in which inflammasome proteins are activated. In this review, we have focused on curcumin and evidenced its therapeutic potential in inflammatory diseases such as neurodegenerative diseases, respiratory diseases, and arthritis by acting on the inflammasome.

Abstract
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is one of the inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). It is a chronic autoimmune inflammation of unclear etiology affecting the colon and rectum, characterized by unpredictable exacerbation and remission phases. Conventional treatment options for UC include mesalamine, glucocorticoids, immunosuppressants, and biologics. The management of UC is challenging, and other therapeutic options are constantly being sought. In recent years more attention is being paid to curcumin, a main active polyphenol found in the turmeric root, which has numerous beneficial effects in the human body, including anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic, and antioxidative properties targeting several cellular pathways and making an impact on intestinal microbiota. This review will summarize the current knowledge on the role of curcumin in the UC therapy.

Abstract
Owing to their water insolubility, low stability, and poor absorption, anti-inflammatory curcuminoids (CUN) are difficult to be extracted and delivered to the action site. As a result, therapeutic hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (HDESs), containing menthol and fatty acids (capric, caprylic, and oleic acids), are being developed for CUN solubilization and delivery. In this study, the anti-inflammatory effects of various combinations of HDESs with CUN and curcumin (CUR) were investigated on RAW264.7 macrophage cells. The results showed that CUN can be solubilized using the HDESs. The HDESs of oleic acid (OLA) : menthol (1 : 2, 1 : 1, and 2 : 1 molar ratios) exhibited anti-inflammatory effects, and OLA : menthol (1 : 1 molar ratio) increased the anti-inflammatory effects of CUR. The cytotoxicity of CUN and CUR was also lowered when combined with some OLA : menthol HDESs. The combination of OLA, menthol, and CUR entirely suppressed NO secretion without significant cytotoxicity. These results clearly indicate the potential of HDESs to solubilize CUN and impart anti-inflammatory properties. Furthermore, these solvents could replace organic solvents for CUN extraction, with the added benefit of being therapeutic, biodegradable, and safe for human consumption.

Abstract
This umbrella review is to recapitulate and grade the available evidence of associations between consumption of Zingiberaceae plants/curcumin (Cur) and multiple health-related outcomes. This study included 161 meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials in 76 articles with 67 unique health outcomes. Data on heterogeneity and publication bias are considered to assess the quality of evidence. Based on the different impact of Zingiberaceae plants/Cur on human health, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Zingiberaceae plants/Cur can mainly improve metabolic syndrome, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, cardiovascular disease, and some chronic inflammatory diseases, likewise, obviously relief the pain of osteoarthritis and related diseases. Ginger supplements have been shown to improve vomiting during pregnancy and to relieve nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy and surgery. The surgery is any type of surgery, including laparoscopic surgery, gynecological surgery and mixed surgery. Beneficial associations were found with Cur intervention in gastrointestinal, neurological and oral diseases. Zingiberaceae plants/Cur are generally safe and favorable for multiple health outcomes in humans. High-quality research is further needed to prove the observed associations.

Abstract
Objectives Curcumin is a potential complementary treatment for ulcerative colitis (UC). This overview systematically summarizes and evaluates the existing evidence of curcumin in the treatment of UC. Methods Two researchers searched seven databases for systematic reviews (SRs)/meta-analyses (MAs) which are about randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on curcumin for UC. Two researchers use the Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews 2 (AMSTAR-2), the Risk of Bias in Systematic Reviews (ROBIS) scale, the list of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) system to assess the included SRs/MAs. Results Seven published SRs/MAs were included in our study. According to the results of the AMSTAR-2 assessment, all SRs/MAs are considered to be of very low quality. According to the ROBIS evaluation results, no SR/MA has been assessed as a low risk of bias. According to the results of the PRISMA checklist assessment, no SR/MA has been fully reported on the PRISMA checklist. According to GRADE, a total of 19 outcome indicators extracted from the included SRs/MAs were evaluated. The quality of evidence was 10 moderate, 6 low, and 3 very low. Conclusions Curcumin may be an effective and safe complementary treatment for UC. However, further standard and comprehensive SRs/MAs and RCTs are needed to provide an evidence-based medical rationale for this.

Abstract
Introduction: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that is identified with
chronic inflammation and progressive destruction of the joints. The
defective activity of regulatory T cells (Tregs) plays a crucial role in RA
development. Oleuropein (OLEU) is the most common polyphenolic compound in
olive leaf extracts with numerous pharmacological activities. In this study,
the potential effects of OLEU in shifting CD4+ T cells toward
Tregs are evaluated in patients with RA. Methods 32 healthy controls (HC) and 45 RA patients were included in two groups. The
immunoturbidometric technique was used to measure serum levels of c-reactive
protein (CRP) and rheumatoid factor (RF). Isolated CD4+ T cells
from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of HC and RA patients were
cultured with appropriate concentrations of OLEU. The cytotoxicity effects
of OLEU were determined using the MTT assay at 24, 48, and 72 h. The
percentage of CD4+CD25 + FoxP3 regulatory T lymphocytes (Tregs)
and the expressions of IL-10 and TGF-β were evaluated by flow cytometry and
immunoassay techniques after treatment of cells with different
concentrations of OLEU for 24 h. The serum levels of RF and CRP in patients
with RA were 11.8 ± 5.32 IU/ml and 6.36 ± 5.82 mg/l, respectively. Results OLEU had a dose-dependent effect on the CD4+ T cells via
increasing the frequency of CD4+CD25 + FoxP3 Tregs
(p = 0.0001). Moreover, it induced the production of
IL-10 (p = 0.0001) and TGF-β (p < 0.01)
in both HC and RA patients. Conclusion The findings of this study suggest that OLEU may have immunomodulatory
effects by inducing Tregs, and it might help in developing a novel nutrition
strategy for management of autoimmune diseases such as RA.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Accumulating evidence has been reported regarding the effect of dietary antioxidants on clinical variables in IBD patients, however, findings are controversial. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate effect of dietary antioxidants on clinical variables in patients with IBD or its subtypes. METHODS We searched PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science from inception to January 2021 using relevant keywords. Data were pooled by using the random-effect model. All statistical analyses were done using STATA version 14. RESULTS Our meta-analysis was exclusively done on studies about the effect of curcumin on IBD patients, because limited studies were done on other antioxidants. Curcumin administration resulted in significant increment of clinical remission in patients with IBD (SMD: 0.86%, 95% CI: 0.16, 1.56, p = 0.016), significant remission in clinical symptoms (SMD: -0.96 score, 95% CI: -1.34, -0.57, p < 0.001), and significant increment in endoscopic remission in IBD patients (SMD: 0.51%, 95% CI: 0.16, 0.85, p = 0.004), comparing to control group. Curcumin supplementation also made better clinical response than control group (SMD: 0.74%, 95% CI: 0.22, 1.26, p = 0.005) and also resulted in significant improvement in quality of life of patients with IBD, as compared to control group (SMD: 1.23 score, 95% CI: 0.72, 1.74, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Our meta-analysis showed that curcumin significantly improved clinical and endoscopic remissions in IBD patients. This supplementation also caused significant reduction in clinical symptoms of IBD patients along with better clinical response and the increased quality of life. Further researches with larger sample size and longer period of intervention are required to evaluate efficacy of dietary antioxidants on clinical variables in patients with IBD.
