Abstract
Olive oil extraction has recently experienced a continuous increase due to its related beneficial properties. Consequently, large amounts of olive mill wastes (OMWs) derived from the trituration process are annually produced, causing serious environmental problems. The limited financial capabilities of olive mills make them usually unable to bear the high costs required for the disposal of their wastes. Alternatively, the valorization of OMWs within the framework of the so-called waste-to-resource concept and their recycling can represent a successful strategy for the implementation of circular economy model in the olive industry, which could have significant socioeconomic impacts on low-income Mediterranean countries. There is, however, no unique solution for OMWs valorization, due to the wide variety of the wastes' composition and their seasonal production. In this review, the potential of OMWs for being reused and the recent technological advances in the field of OMWs valorization are assessed. Special focus is given to the analysis of the advantages and limitations of each technology and to reporting the most significant issues that still limiting its industrial scale-up. The information collected in this review shows that OMW could be effectively exploited in several sectors, including energy production and agriculture. OMWs potential seems, however, undervalued, and the implementation of sustainable valorization strategies in large-scale remains challenging. More efforts and policy actions, through collective actions, encouraging subsidies, and establishing public-private collaborations, are still needed to reconcile research progress with industrial practices and encourage the large-scale implementation of the waste-to-resource concept in the olive sector.

Abstract
This research was undertaken to optimize the phenolic compound removal from Olive Mill Wastewater (OMW) by sawdust and red clay as natural adsorbents. Fractional factorial experimental design at 25-1 was used in order to optimize the experimental conditions for high removal efficiency. Statistics ANOVA analysis, Fisher's test, and Student's test suggested that the adsorbent dose has the most significant influence on polyphenol removal for both adsorbents. The maximum removal of polyphenols by sawdust reached 49.6% at 60 °C by using 60 g/L of adsorbent dose, pH 2, reaction time of 24 h, and agitation speed of 80 rpm. Whereas, for red clay, 48.08% of polyphenols removal was observed under the same conditions for sawdust except the temperature of 25 °C instead of 60 °C. In addition, the thermodynamic parameters suggested spontaneous process for both adsorbents, endothermic for the sawdust and exothermic for red clay. Furthermore, the phytotoxicity effect of OMW on durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var. durum) and white bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) seed germination was investigated. The obtained results showed that the untreated OMW inhibited the seed germination of T. turgidum and P. vulgaris seeds. OMW treatment with red clay followed by dilution (95% water) resulted in 87 and 30% germination of P. vulgaris and T. turgidum, respectively. While, the treatment of OMW with sawdust and dilution at 95% resulted in 51 and 26% germination of P. vulgaris and T. turgidum, respectively.

Abstract
This work investigates olive pomace from olive mill factories as an adsorbent for the removal of total phenols from olive mill effluent (OME). This pathway of valorization of olive pomace reduces the environmental impact of OME while providing a sustainable and cost-effective wastewater treatment approach for the olive oil industry. Olive pomace was pretreated with water washing, drying (60 °C) and sieving (<2 mm) to obtain the raw olive pomace (OPR) adsorbent material. Olive pomace biochar (OPB) was obtained via carbonization of OPR at 450 °C in a muffle furnace. The adsorbent materials OPR and OPB were characterized using several basic analyzes (Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy-Dispersive X-ray SEM/EDX, X-ray Diffraction XRD, thermal analysis DTA and TGA, Fourier transform infrared FTIR and Brunauer, Emmett and Teller surface BET). The materials were subsequently tested in a series of experimental tests to optimize the sorption of polyphenols from OME, investigating the effects of pH and adsorbent dose. Adsorption kinetics showed good correlation with a pseudo-second-order kinetic model as well as Langmuir isotherms. Maximum adsorption capacities amounted to 21.27 mg·g-1 for OPR and 66.67 mg·g-1 for OPB, respectively. Thermodynamic simulations indicated spontaneous and exothermic reaction. The rates of total phenol removal were within the range of 10-90% following 24 h batch adsorption in OME diluted at 100 mg/L total phenols, with the highest removal rates observed at pH = 10. Furthermore, solvent regeneration with 70% ethanol solution yielded partial regeneration of OPR at 14% and of OPB at 45% following the adsorption, implying a significant rate of recovery of phenols in the solvent. The results of this study suggest that adsorbents derived from olive pomace may be used as economical materials for the treatment and potential capture of total phenols from OME, also suggesting potential further applications for pollutants in industrial wastewaters, which can have significant implications in the field of environmental technologies.

Abstract
Produce-related foodborne outbreaks are becoming increasingly prevalent worldwide. In plant tissues, various compounds, including polysaccharides, phenolic compounds, and chlorophyll, can inhibit RT-PCR detection of viruses. In this study, we developed a highly sensitive RT-qPCR in combination with the bentonite-coated activated carbon (BCAC) assay for detection of norovirus from fruits and vegetables, which could be completed within 7 h and was about 10-100 fold more sensitive than the standard procedures (ISO 15216-1:2017). The extraction efficiencies of three surrogate viruses (MS2, MNV-1, and TV) from five fresh produce (lettuce, cherry tomato, blueberry, strawberry, and spinach) were higher with BCAC treatment than those of control groups, ranging from 17.82% to 98.60%. The average detection limit of these viruses using the BCAC-RT-qPCR method was stable at an average of 102 PFU/g or GC/g. Finally, this BCAC-RT-qPCR method was applied for detection of human norovirus GII.4 spiked onto lettuce and cherry tomato. The viral extraction efficiencies were up to 53.43% and 95.56%, respectively, which is almost four and seven times better than those without BCAC. Therefore, the BCAC-RT-qPCR method can be used to detect low levels of foodborne viruses from produce.

Abstract
The current study was carried out to treat the olive mill wastewater (OMW) via infiltration percolation process, using low-cost natural adsorbents that could improve the ability of the system to enhance the disposal rate of elimination of pollutant from the OMW. The experimental pilot was composed of three PVC (polyvinyl chloride) columns with 10 cm in diameter and 110-cm height equipped with lateral air entries. Each column was filled with four layers of 10 cm of a mixture of sand (70%), charcoal (20%) and sawdust (10%) respectively. These layers were alternated by four permeable layers of 10 cm of Pouzzolane. To assess the effect of the pretreatment on the efficiency of the system, three types of OMW were used: raw OMW, diluted OMW with domestic wastewater at 1/1(v/v) ratio and OMW pretreated with lime. For the column feed with raw OMW, an average removal of total COD (41%), dissolved COD (54%), NH4-N (40.25%), NO3- (15.76%), total phosphorus (55.63%) and orthophosphate (50.84%) was recorded. The results showed that the column feed with diluted OMW with domestic wastewater was the most efficient one with a removal rate that reached 93.2% of total COD, 86.2% of dissolved COD, 92% of polyphenol, 92% of orthophosphate (OP), 97.2% of total phosphorus (TP) and 81% of NH4-N. The pretreatment of OMW with lime gave the lowest removal rate for all the parameters: total COD (34%), dissolved COD (50%), NH4-N (30%), NO3- (- 21%), total phosphorus (15.19%) and orthophosphate (9.04%). This study demonstrated that the dilution is a way to optimize the efficiency of the system of infiltration-percolation in treating the OMW.

Abstract
The extraction of olive oil produces significant residual olive-mill wastewater (OMW). The composition of OMW varies according to the type of olive, the fruit's ripeness level, and the extraction method (traditional one-pressing system or continuous systems based on centrifugation of the olive pulp). In olive-producing countries, OMW is important for the environment and the economy and is also a low-cost source of polyphenolic compounds with high antioxidant properties. Olive oil's properties, such as its anti-atherogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, and immunological modulator effects, have been attributed to its polyphenols. In this study, the cloud point extraction (CPE) method was used to recover polyphenolic compounds from OMW. The total micellar phase of the three recoveries was 24.2% and the total polyphenols (after sonication) was 504 mg GAE/Kg. Furthermore, the addition of polyphenols recovered from OMW enhanced the olive oil and extended its shelf life without changing its organoleptic properties. There was a 42.2% change in polyphenols after 0.5% enrichment of micellar dispersions. Thus, it is suggested that the CPE method could lead to better waste management in the olive oil industry and improve the nutritional quality of food products.

Abstract
The extraction of olive oil produces annually huge quantities of Olive Mill Wastewater (OMW) that are considered as a source of pollution due to their high concentration in organic matter. This study aims to valorize Olive mill wastewater and investigates the effect of the extraction method and solvents on the contents and profiling of phenolic compounds and their antioxidant potential. It was revealed that the liquid-liquid method using ethyl acetate is the most effective followed by the maceration using chloroform/methanol (1:1), their polyphenol contents are respectively at 1.17 g GAE/L of OMW and 1.07 g GAE/L of OMW. In addition, the antioxidant activity was studied using ABTS test. It has shown that the methanolic extract has the best antioxidant activity at 15.75 mg/L. Moreover, we noticed a negative correlation between the phenolic compounds' concentration and their antioxidant activity which indicates that the phenolic profile may not be the same in the different extracts that's why a primary identification of the phenolic profile using UHPLC-MS was monitored and the results showed different chromatographic profiles between the samples.

Abstract
Polyphenols and their intermediate metabolites are natural compounds that are spread worldwide. Polyphenols are antioxidant agents beneficial for human health, but exposure to some of these compounds can be harmful to humans and the environment. A number of industries produce and discharge polyphenols in water effluents. These emissions pose serious environmental issues, causing the pollution of surface or groundwater (which are used to provide drinking water) or harming wildlife in the receiving ecosystems. The treatment of high-polyphenol-content waters is mandatory for many industries. Nowadays, biotechnological approaches are gaining relevance for their low footprint, high efficiency, low cost, and versatility in pollutant removal. Biotreatments exploit the diversity of microbial metabolisms in relation to the different characteristics of the polluted water, modifying the design and the operational conditions of the technologies. Microbial metabolic features have been used for full or partial polyphenol degradation since several decades ago. Nowadays, the comprehensive use of biotreatments combined with physical-chemical treatments has enhanced the removal rates to provide safe and high-quality effluents. In this review, the evolution of the biotechnological processes for treating high-polyphenol-content water is described. A particular emphasis is given to providing a general concept, indicating which bioprocess might be adopted considering the water composition and the economic/environmental requirements. The use of effective technologies for environmental phenol removal could help in reducing/avoiding the detrimental effects of these chemicals. In addition, some of them could be employed for the recovery of beneficial ones.

Abstract
Olive oil mill wastewater (OMWW) poses an undeniable environmental problem due to its high organic loads and phenolic compound (PC) content. This study determined the optimal conditions for preparing a new bio-sorbent from olive pomace (OP) and the adsorptive treatment of OMWW by this bio-sorbent. The activation reaction was performed with hydrogen peroxide. The results of the combination effect optimization of the three preparation variables, the activation temperature (°C) X1, the activation time (min) X2, and the impregnation ratio X3, are presented by the response surface methodology (RSM). The maximum adsorption capacity was obtained at an activation time of 240 min, a temperature of 80 °C, and a ratio equal to 6.2:1. The bio-sorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The adsorption process performance of this bio-sorbent was examined in batch (phenol solution) and fixed-bed columns (real effluent of OMWW). An adsorption capacity of 789.28 mg g-1 and 643.92 mg g-1 has been achieved for 4000 mg L-1 concentration of PCs, respectively, for batch and fixed-bed column essays. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics were consistent with the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models. Therefore, the Thomas model best fits the fixed-bed column experimental data. The bio-sorbent gave a high desorption percentage of PCs, which was above 60% using HCl (0.1M).

Abstract
The main goal of this review is to collect and analyze the recently published research concerning the conventional and sustainable treatment processes for olive mill wastewater (OMW). In the conventional treatment processes, it is noticed that the main objective is to meet the environmental regulations for remediated wastewater without considering the economical values of its valuable constituents such as polyphenols. These substances have many important environmental values and could be used in many vital applications. Conversely, sustainable treatment processes aim to recover the valuable constituents through different processes and then treat the residual wastewater. Both approaches’ operational and design parameters were analyzed to generalize their advantages and possible applications. A valorization-treatment approach for OMW is expected to make it a sustainable resource for ingredients of high economical value that could lead to a profitable business. In addition, inclusion of a recovery process will detoxify the residual OMW, simplify its management treatment, and allow the possible reuse of the vast amounts of processed water. In a nutshell, the proposed approach led to zero waste with a closed water cycle development.

Abstract
Beef patties were treated with 450 μg/g of extracts from grape (Vitis vinifera) seeds (GSE), pomace (GPE) or orange (Citrus reticulata) pomace (OPE) and compared to negative (no extract; CTR) and positive (sodium metabisulphite; SMB) controls for their effect on colour, lipid and protein oxidation and bacterial growth under simulated retail display conditions (4 °C) for 9 d, and sensory quality. Antioxidant activity and redness of beef patties increased in the order of CTR < OPE = GPE < GSE < SMB. The order of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and carbonyl values were CTR > GPE = OPE > GSE > SBM, while that of bacterial counts were CTR > GSE = GPE > OPE > SMB. Retail display period had significant effect on all the shelf-life parameters. Overall, intensity of aroma, beef-like aroma and flavour in beef patties were highest in OPE. Results suggested that GSE and OPE could be commercially valorised as natural antioxidants and antibacterials in beef patties, respectively.

Abstract
User-friendly and energy-efficient methods able to work in noncontinuous mode for in situ purification of olive mill wastewater (OMW) are necessary. Herein we determined the potential of oxidized multiwalled carbon nanotubes entrapped in a microporous polymeric matrix of polydimethylsiloxane in the removal and recovery of phenolic compounds (PCs) from OMW. The fabrication of the nanocomposite materials was straightforward and evidenced good adsorption capacity. The adsorption process is influenced by the pH of the OMW. Thermodynamic parameters evidenced the good affinity of the entrapped nanomaterial towards phenols. Furthermore, the kinetics and adsorption isotherms are studied in detail. The presence of oil inside the OMW can speed up the uptake process in batch adsorption experiments with respect to standard aqueous solutions, suggesting a possible use of the nanocomposite for fast processing of OMW directly in the tank where they are stored. Moreover, the prepared nanocomposite is safe and can be easily handled and disposed of, thus avoiding the presence of specialized personnel. After the adsorption process the surface of the nanomaterial can be easily regenerated by mild treatments with diluted acetic acid, thus permitting both the recyclability of the nanomaterial and the recovery of phenolic compounds for a possible use as additives in food and nutraceutical industries and the recovery of OMW for fertirrigation.

Abstract
The disposal of olive mill wastewaters is a considerable subject for the development of a sustainable olive oil industry considering their high content of pollutants. Nevertheless, the selective extraction of phenolic compounds from olive mill wastewaters represents a promising approach to obtain phenolics suitable for food enrichment. This work aimed to evaluate the efficiency of phenolic extract addition (50 mg L−1), used as natural antioxidant, in sunflower oil against oxidative deterioration; to this aim, XAD-7-HP resin was tested in the recovery of phenolic compounds from olive mill wastewaters. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography was used to evaluate the single phenols contained in the extract; the most consistent amount was detected for hydroxytyrosol (834 mg 100 mL−1). The change in the oxidation state of fortified sunflower oil was studied by measuring physicochemical (refractive index, peroxide value and oxidative resistance to degradation) and antioxidant parameters (DPPH, ABTS and ORAC assays) during 90 days of storage. Results showed an enhancement of oxidative stability of 50% in the fortified oil compared to control.

Abstract
The advancement of science has facilitated increase in the human lifespan, reflected in economic and population growth, which unfortunately leads to increased exploitation of resources. This situation entails not only depletion of resources, but also increases environmental pollution, mainly due to atmospheric emissions, wastewater effluents, and solid wastes. In this scenario, it is compulsory to adopt a paradigm change, as far as the consumption of resources by the population is concerned, to achieve a circular economy. The recovery and reuse of resources are key points, leading to a decrease in the consumption of raw materials, waste reduction, and improvement of energy efficiency. This is the reason why the concept of the circular economy can be applied in any industrial activity, including the wastewater treatment sector. With this in view, this review manuscript focuses on demonstrating the challenges and opportunities in applying a circular economy in the water sector. For example, reclamation and reuse of wastewater to increase water resources, by paying particular attention to the risks for human health, recovery of nutrients, or highly added-value products (e.g., metals and biomolecules among others), valorisation of sewage sludge, and/or recovery of energy. Being aware of this situation, in the European, Union 18 out of 27 countries are already reusing reclaimed wastewater at some level. Moreover, many wastewater treatment plants have reached energy self-sufficiency, producing up to 150% of their energy requirements. Unfortunately, many of the opportunities presented in this work are far from becoming a reality. Still, the first step is always to become aware of the problem and work on optimizing the solution to make it possible.

Abstract
This study investigates the performance of soil and OMW microfloras in OMW organic matter humification in soil. In order to highlight the role of OMW and soil microfloras in the processes of OMW organic matter humification, either OMW or soil was sterilized with autoclaving. The study was carried out in microcosms of 1l containing 500 g of raw or sterilized soil, to which was added 200 ml of raw or sterilized OMW. After 24 months of incubation, the amount of phenolic compounds in the different microcosms was statistically indifferent compared to the control. However, TG-DTA and FTIR analysis of soil humic acids showed that recalcitrant OMW phenolic compounds remain in soil humus in the microcosm: sterilized OMW + raw soil, even after 24 months. Results show that humic acids detected in presence of OMW microflora are loaded with proteins and carbonated compounds and deprived of phenolic compounds and aliphatics with long chain, while humic acids detected in absence of OMW microflora are loaded with phenolic compounds.

Abstract
In this study, a ternary nanocomposite comprising graphene oxide and carbon loaded with zero-valent iron nanoparticles was developed as a promising nanoadsorbent, especially for polyphenols available in food industry by-products. The fabricated nanoadsorbents were characterized in terms of structural, morphological, and chemical attributes. Zero-valent iron nanoparticles (nZVI) were produced by a modified method leading to the formation of nanoparticles below 50 nm. Also, active carbon was transformed to a needle-like shape instead of its native shape so that the active surface area was drastically increased which favors the higher adsorption process. Moreover, the space between graphene oxide sheets was enhanced by ultrasonication so that more active carbon and nZVIs could be oriented between these sheets. Finally, the FTIR and Raman data demonstrated the formation of O-H stretching groups and a D/G value of 0.85 corresponding to the maintenance of a desired structure of the graphene oxide sheets, respectively. To summarize, the developed nanocomposites can be employed as a promising tool for the adsorbance of food and beverage industry by-products, especially polyphenols.

Abstract
Hydroxytyrosol (HT) is a polyphenol of interest to the food, feed, supplements and pharmaceutical sectors. It is one of the strongest known natural antioxidants and has been shown to confer other benefits such as anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties, and it has the potential to act as a cardio- and neuroprotectant. It is known to be one of the compounds responsible for the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet. In nature, HT is found in the olive plant (Olea europaea) as part of the secoiridoid compound oleuropein, in its leaves, fruit, oil and oil production waste products. HT can be extracted from these olive sources, but it can also be produced by chemical synthesis or through the use of microorganisms. This review looks at the production of HT using plant extraction, chemical synthesis and biotechnological approaches.

Abstract
In this work, sonication (20-kHz) was conducted to assist the biosorption of phenolics from blueberry pomace extracts by brewery waste yeast biomass. The adsorption capacity of yeast increased markedly under ultrasonic fields. After sonication at 394.2 W/L and 40 °C for 120 min, the adsorption capacity was increased by 62.7% compared with that under reciprocating shaking. An artificial neural network was used to model and visualize the effects of different parameters on yeast biosorption capacity. Both biosorption time and acoustic energy density had positive influences on yeast biosorption capacity, whereas no clear influence of temperature on biosorption process was observed. Regarding the mechanism of ultrasound-enhanced biosorption process, the amino and carboxyl groups in yeast were considered to be associated with the yeast biosorption property. Meanwhile, ultrasound promoted the decline of the structure order of yeast cells induced by phenolic uptake. The interactions between yeast cells and phenolics were also affected by the structures of phenolics. Moreover, the mass transfer process was simulated by a surface diffusional model considering the ultrasound-induced yeast cell disruption. The modeling results showed that the external mass transfer coefficient in liquid phase and the surface diffusion coefficient under sonication at 394.2 W/L and 40 °C were 128.5% and 74.3% higher than that under reciprocating shaking, respectively.

Abstract
Treatment of olive vegetation waste with tyrosinase immobilized on multiwalled carbon nanotubes increased the antioxidant activity as a consequence of the conversion of phenols to corresponding catechol derivatives, as evaluated by DPPH, Comet assay, and micronucleus analyses. During this transformation, 4-hydroxyphenethyl alcohol (tyrosol) was quantitatively converted to bioactive 3,4-dihydroxyphenethyl alcohol (hydroxytyrosol). The hydroxytyrosol-enriched olive vegetation waste also promoted autophagy and inhibited the inflammatory response in human THP-1 monocytes.
