Self-sacrificial reconstruction of MoO42- intercalated NiFe LDH/Co2P heterostructures enabling interfacial synergies and oxygen vacancies for triggering oxygen evolution reaction

High-performance aqueous rechargeable NiCo//Zn battery with molybdate anion intercalated CoNi-LDH@CP bilayered cathode

Seeking cathode materials with high areal capacity and excellent cycling tolerance is a key step to develop aqueous rechargeable zinc-based alkaline batteries with high energy density, power density and excellent stability. Here, the bilayered cathode composite (MCN-LDH@CP) of molybdate intercalated cobalt-nickel layered hydroxide nanosheets (MCN-LDH) grown on cobalt phosphate octahydrate microsheet (CP) was prepared by a two-step hydrothermal process. Molybdate intercalation significantly reduces the thickness of cobalt-nickel layered hydroxide, greatly increases its specific surface area, regulates its pore distribution, increases the crystal plane spacing, promotes the diffusion rate of hydroxide in it, and increases its specific capacity. Meanwhile, the bilayered MCN-LDH@CP electrode significantly improved the areal energy density (2.89 mWh/cm2) and peak power density (111.22 mW/cm2) and cycle stability (97.8 % after 7000 cycles) of the CoNi//Zn battery. The excellent stability is mainly due to the fact that the MCN-LDH overlay inhibits the loss of P element of CP and improves the structural stability of the sample. The quasi-solid-state MCN-LDH@CP//Zn battery can still charge a mobile phone even when hammered and pierced, showing excellent safety and reliability. This work opens a new avenue to develop CoNi//Zn batteries with high energy density, power density and excellent tolerance.

La and S Co-Doping Induced the Synergism of Multiphase Nickel-Iron Nanosheets with Rich Oxygen Vacancies to Trigger Large-Current-Density Oxygen Evolution and Urea Oxidation Reactions

The development of cost-effective electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is of great significance for hydrogen production. Herein, La and S co-doped multiphase electrocatalyst (LSFN-63) is fabricated by metal-corrosion process. FeOOH can reduce the formation energy of NiOOH, and enhance the stability of NiOOH as active sites for OER/UOR. The rich oxygen vacancies can increase the number of active sites, optimize the adsorption of intermediates, and improve electrical conductivity. Beyond, La and S co-doping can also regulate the electronic structure of FeOOH. As a result, LSFN-63 presents a low overpotential of 210/450 mV at 100/1000 mA cm-2 , small Tafel slope (32 mV dec-1 ), and outstanding stability under 1000 mA cm-2 @60 h, and can also display excellent OER activity with 180 mV at 250 mA cm-2 and long-term catalytic durability at 250 mA cm-2 @135 h in 30 wt% KOH under 60 °C. Moreover, LSFN-63 demonstrates remarkable UOR performance in 1 m KOH + 0.5 m urea, which just requires an ultra-small overpotential of 140 mV at 100 mA cm-2 , and maintain long-term durability over 120 h. This work opens up a promising avenue for the development of high-efficiency electrocatalysts by a facile metal-corrosion strategy.

Machine learning-assisted optimization of multi-metal hydroxide electrocatalysts for overall water splitting

Green hydrogen produced via electrochemical water splitting is a suitable candidate to replace emission-intensive fuels. However, the successful widespread adoption of green hydrogen is contingent on the development of low-cost, earth-abundant catalysts. Herein, machine learning models built on experimental data were used to optimize the precursor ratios of hydroxide-based electrocatalysts, with the objective of improving the product's electrocatalytic performance for overall water splitting. The Neural Network-based models were found to be the most effective in predicting and minimizing the overpotentials of the catalysts, reaching a minimum in two iterations. The relatively mild reaction conditions of the synthesis procedure, coupled with its scalability demonstrated herein, renders the optimized catalyst relevant for industrial implementation in the future. The optimized catalyst, characterized to be a molybdate-intercalated CoFe LDH, demonstrated overpotentials of 266 and 272 mV at 10 mA cm-2 for oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions respectively in alkaline electrolyte, alongside unwavering stability for overall water splitting over 50 h. Overall, our results reflect the efficacy and advantages of machine learning strategies to alleviate the time and labour-intensive nature of experimental optimizations, which can greatly accelerate electrocatalysts research.

Co3 O4 Supported on β-Mo2 C with Different Interfaces for Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Interface engineering is an effective strategy for improving the activity of catalysts in electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, Co3 O4 supported on β-Mo2 C with different interfaces were investigated for electrocatalytic OER. The morphological diversity of β-Mo2 C supports allowed different Co3 O4 -Mo2 C interactions. Various techniques characterized the composition and microstructure of the interface in the composites. Due to the strong interaction between Co3 O4 nanoparticles and β-Mo2 C nanobelts with opposing surface potentials, compact interface was observed between Co3 O4 active species and β-Mo2 C nanobelt support. The compact interface enhanced the conductivity of the material and also regulated the interfacial electron redistribution of Mo and Co atoms, promoting the charge transfer process during OER. In addition, the surface loading of Co3 O4 can effectively improve the hydrophilicity of the surface. β-Mo2 C has the capability in dissociating H2 O molecules. Thus, an example has been carefully demonstrated for interface engineering in electrocatalytic OER.

Superwettable and photothermal all-in-one electrocatalyst for boosting water/urea electrolysis

Developing multifunctional all-in-one electrocatalysts for energy-saving hydrogen generation remains a challenge. In this study, a simple and feasible thermal phosphorization strategy is explored to rationally construct P-doped MoO₂-NiMoO₄ heterostructure on nickel foam (NF). The heterointerfaced P-MoO₂-NiMoO₄/NF can simultaneously realize the integrated all-in-one functionalities, innovatively introducing superwettable surfaces, photothermal conversion capabilities and electrocatalytic functions. The superwettability gives P-MoO₂-NiMoO₄/NF sufficient electrolyte permeation and smooth bubble detachment. The plasmonic MoO₂ with photothermal performance greatly elevates the local surface temperature of in P-MoO₂-NiMoO₄/NF, which is conducive to improve the electrocatalytic efficiency. The favorable in-situ surface reconstruction brings abundant active sites for electrocatalytic reactions. As an advanced multifunctional electrocatalyst, the superwettable and photothermal P-MoO₂-NiMoO₄/NF exhibits significantly improved performances in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR). More importantly, the highly efficient and stable overall water-urea electrolysis assisted by photothermal fields can be simply achieved by exposing P-MoO₂-NiMoO₄/NF to near-infrared (NIR) light.

Interface strong-coupled 3D Mo-NiS@Ni-Fe LDH flower-cluster as exceptionally efficient electrocatalyst for water splitting in wide pH range

It is crucial to create a bifunctional catalyst with high efficiency and low cost for electrochemical water splitting under alkaline and neutral pH conditions. This study investigated the in-situ creation of ultrafine Mo-NiS and NiFe LDH nanosheets as an effective and stable electrocatalyst with a three-dimensional (3D) flower-cluster hierarchical structure (Mo-NiS@NiFe LDH). The strong interfacial connection between Mo-NiS and NiFe LDH enhances the formation of metal higher chemical states in the material, optimizes the electronic structure, increases OH^- adsorption capacity improves electron transfer/mass diffusion, and promotes O₂/H₂ gas release. As a result, at 10 mA cm^-2, Mo-NiS@NiFe LDH/NF demonstrates the outstanding bifunctional electrocatalytic activity of just 107 mV (HER, hydrogen evolution reaction) and 184 mV (hydrogen evolution reaction) (OER, oxygen evolution reaction). The catalytic performance is remarkably stable after 72 h of continuous operation in 1 M KOH at high current densities (300 mA cm^-2). More interestingly, in the overall water splitting system, the cell voltages for anode and cathode in both alkaline and neutral electrolytes for Mo-NiS@NiFe LDH/NF are only 1.54 V (alkaline) and 2.06 V (neutral) at 10 mA cm^-2. These results demonstrated that the bifunctional electrocatalyst design concept is a viable solution for water splitting in both alkaline and neutral systems.

Recent Advances of Modified Ni (Co, Fe)-Based LDH 2D Materials for Water Splitting

Water splitting technology is an efficient approach to produce hydrogen (H₂) as an energy carrier, which can address the problems of environmental deterioration and energy shortage well, as well as establishment of a clean and sustainable hydrogen economy powered by renewable energy sources due to the green reaction of H₂ with O₂. The efficiency of H₂ production by water splitting technology is intimately related with the reactions on the electrode. Nowadays, the efficient electrocatalysts in water splitting reactions are the precious metal-based materials, i.e., Pt/C, RuO₂, and IrO₂. Ni (Co, Fe)-based layered double hydroxides (LDH) two-dimensional (2D) materials are the typical non-precious metal-based materials in water splitting with their advantages including low cost, excellent electrocatalytic performance, and simple preparation methods. They exhibit great potential for the substitution of precious metal-based materials. This review summarizes the recent progress of Ni (Co, Fe)-based LDH 2D materials for water splitting, and mainly focuses on discussing and analyzing the different strategies for modifying LDH materials towards high electrocatalytic performance. We also discuss recent achievements, including their electronic structure, electrocatalytic performance, catalytic center, preparation process, and catalytic mechanism. Furthermore, the characterization progress in revealing the electronic structure and catalytic mechanism of LDH is highlighted in this review. Finally, we put forward some future perspectives relating to design and explore advanced LDH catalysts in water splitting.
