Tuning the olefin-VOCs epoxidation performance of ceria by mechanochemical loading of coinage metal

Immature persimmon residue as a novel biosorbent for efficient removal of Pb(II) and Cr(VI) from wastewater: Performance and mechanisms

Owing to the powerful affinity of tannin toward heavy metal ions, it is frequently immobilized on adsorbents to enhance their adsorption properties. However, natural adsorbents containing tannin have been overlooked owing to its water solubility. Herein, a novel natural adsorbent based on the immature persimmon residue (IPR) with soluble tannin removed was fabricated to eliminate Pb(II) and Cr(VI) in aquatic environments. The insoluble tannin in IPR endowed it with prosperous properties for eliminating Pb(II) and Cr(VI), and the IPR achieved maximum Pb(II) and Cr(VI) adsorption quantities of 68.79 mg/g and 139.40 mg/g, respectively. Kinetics and isothermal adsorption analysis demonstrated that the removal behavior was controlled by monolayer chemical adsorption. Moreover, the IPR exhibited satisfactory Pb(II) and Cr(VI) removal efficiencies even in the presence of multiple coexisting ions and showed promising regeneration potential after undergoing five consecutive cycles. Additionally, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) analysis unveiled that the elimination mechanisms were primarily electrostatic attraction, chelation and reduction. Overall, the IPR, as a tannin-containing biosorbent, was verified to possess substantial potential for heavy metal removal, which can provide new insights into the development of novel natural adsorbents from the perspective of waste resource utilization.

A Hierarchical Metal-Organic Framework Composite Aerogel Catalyst Containing Integrated Acid, Base, and Metal Sites for the One-Pot Catalytic Synthesis of Cyclic Carbonates

Catalysis has played a decisive role in the development of unique chemical reactions to produce important chemicals. However, conventional stepwise synthetic routes that rely on individual catalysts to promote each step often suffer from ponderous processes for the isolation of intermediates that result in massive material losses and large economic expenditures. In addition, traditional powder forms of these catalysts suffer from poor processability and recoverability. Herein, we designed and prepared a hierarchical metal-organic framework (MOF) composite monolithic catalyst IL-Au@UiO-66-NH2/CMC that contains integrated acid (Zr4+), base (ionic liquid (IL)), and metal sites (Au nanoparticles (NPs)) to promote the one-pot preparation of cyclic carbonates from styrene derivatives and CO2. Highly dispersed Au NPs, IL 1-aminoethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C2NH2 MIM] [Br]), and MOF-positioned Lewis acid sites within this composite aerogel are separately responsible for catalyzing selective epoxidation of the styrene derivatives and the subsequent cycloaddition reaction of CO2 with intermediate styrene oxides. Importantly, inclusion of the imidazolium-based IL effectively modulates the size and chemical microenvironment of the Au NPs via electrostatic protection, leading to catalyst stability and its selective oxidation of styrene. Benefiting from the rapid mass transfer and high exposure of active sites within the pore-rich hierarchical nanostructure, IL-Au@UiO-66-NH2/CMC promotes high conversion (90.5%) of the styrene and selectivity (80.5%) for styrene carbonate (SC) formation in the one-pot process, a performance level that far exceeds those of related catalysts containing only Au NPs or IL (the selectivity of SC < 42%). Furthermore, the composite aerogel catalyst can be readily separated and recycled at least five times without a remarkable loss of activity and selectivity. The controllable integration of various active components in the hierarchical MOF composite aerogel herein should serve as the foundation for the design of multifunctional monolithic catalysts for other valuable tandem processes.

Cobalt Encapsulated in Nitrogen-Doped Graphite-like Shells as Efficient Catalyst for Selective Oxidation of Arylalkanes

Selective oxidation of ethylbenzene to acetophenne is an important process in both organic synthesis and fine chemicals diligence. The cobalt-based catalysts combined with nitrogen-doped carbon have received great attention in ethylbenzene (EB) oxidation. Here, a series of cobalt catalysts with metallic cobalt nanoparticles (NPs) encapsulated in nitrogen-doped graphite-like carbon shells (Co@NC) have been constructed through the one-pot pyrolysis method in the presence of different nitrogen-containing compounds (urea, dicyandiamide and melamine), and their catalytic performance in solvent-free oxidation of EB with tert-butyl hydrogen peroxide (TBHP) as an oxidant was investigated. Under optimized conditions, the UCo@NC (urea as nitrogen source) could afford 95.2% conversion of EB and 96.0% selectivity to acetophenone, and the substrate scalability was remarkable. Kinetics show that UCo@NC contributes to EB oxidation with an apparent activation energy of 32.3 kJ/mol. The synergistic effect between metallic cobalt NPs and nitrogen-doped graphite-like carbon layers was obviously observed and, especially, the graphitic N species plays a key role during the oxidation reaction. The structure-performance relationship illustrated that EB oxidation was a free radical reaction through 1-phenylethanol as an intermediate, and the possible reaction mechanistic has been proposed.

Construction of fluorescence and colorimetric tandem dual-mode sensor by modulating fluorescence and oxidase-like activity via valence switching of cerium-based coordination polymer nanoparticles for sarcosine detection

A fluorescence and colorimetric tandem dual-mode sensor was established by modulating fluorescence and oxidase-like activity via valence switching of cerium-based coordination polymer nanoparticles (Ce-CPNs) for the detection of sarcosine (Sar) which is considered as a potential biomarker for the diagnosis of prostate cancer (PCa). In the present research, sarcosine oxidase (SOX) specifically catalyzes the oxidation of Sar to yield H₂O₂ which can rapidly oxidize Ce(III)-CPNs to generate Ce(IV)-CPNs in appropriate alkaline solution. The generated Ce(IV)-CPNs create a markedly weakened fluorescent signal at 350 nm, while they can induce oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to generate blue TMBox through emerging good oxidase-like activity. The sensing platform can realize accurate, stable, and high-throughput detection of Sar because of the tandem dual signal output mechanism. More attractively, the chromogenic hydrogel sensing device using smartphone photographing has achieved perfect results for the on-site sensing of Sar in urine specimens without large experimental equipments, demonstrating its considerable clinical application potential in the early diagnosis of PCa.
