Microplastic pollution and ecological risk assessment of Yueqing Bay affected by intensive human activities

Deciphering the mechanisms and interactions of the endocrine disruptor bisphenol A and its analogs with the androgen receptor

Bisphenol A (BPA) and its various forms used as BPA alternatives in industries are recognized toxic compounds and antiandrogenic endocrine disruptors. These chemicals are widespread in the environment and frequently detected in biological samples. Concerns exist about their impact on hormones, disrupting natural biological processes in humans, together with their negative impacts on the environment and biotic life. This study aims to characterize the interaction between BPA analogs and the androgen receptor (AR) and the effect on the receptor's normal activity. To achieve this goal, molecular docking was conducted with BPA and its analogs and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) as a reference ligand. Four BPA analogs exhibited higher affinity (-10.2 to -8.7 kcal/mol) for AR compared to BPA (-8.6 kcal/mol), displaying distinct interaction patterns. Interestingly, DHT (-11.0 kcal/mol) shared a binding pattern with BPA. ADMET analysis of the top 10 compounds, followed by molecular dynamics simulations, revealed toxicity and dynamic behavior. Experimental studies demonstrated that only BPA disrupts DHT-induced AR dimerization, thereby affecting AR's function due to its binding nature. This similarity to DHT was observed during computational analysis. These findings emphasize the importance of targeted strategies to mitigate BPA toxicity, offering crucial insights for interventions in human health and environmental well-being.

Abundance and risk assessment of microplastics in water, sediment, and aquatic insects of the Nile River

Microplastics (MPs) are a serious threat in freshwater environments. The ecological risk and abundance level of MPs in abiotic and biotic compartments of the Nile River haven't been systematically reported. Thus, these issues were highlighted in the present study during different seasons of the sampling year. The results showed that MP concentrations in the river ranged from 2.24 ± 0.6 to 3.76 ± 1.1 particles/L, 298 ± 63 to 520 ± 80 particles/kg dry weight, and 0.081 ± 0.051 to 4.95 ± 2.6 particles/individual in surface water, sediment, and different species of aquatic insects, respectively. All the extracted MPs are colored blue, red, and black. Fiber-shaped polyesters (<500-1500 μm) were the most common MPs in all the river compartments. MPs' dominance was observed during the summer in comparison with that in the other seasons. Environmental risk indicators indicate the high ecological risk of MPs, which are widely distributed in the Nile River. In conclusion, MP consumption by aquatic insects may not only be related to levels of environmental contamination, since other variables, such as taxon size, weight, and particular feeding behavior, may also be significant. Additionally, the presence of MPs in insects (at lower trophic levels) creates the potential for predation-based inter-trophic level transmission. Thus, higher trophic-level investigations of various feeding groups should be carried out to identify any possible harm that MPs cause to various aquatic organisms.

Characteristics and ecological risks of microplastic pollution in a tropical drinking water source reservoir in Hainan province, China

Microplastic (<5 mm) pollution has become a pressing environmental concern in recent years. The present study investigated the occurrence characteristics and assessed the ecological risk of microplastics in the surface water and sediment of the Chitian Reservoir, a drinking water source in Hainan province (China). The results indicated that microplastics were detected in the surface water and sediment of the Chitian Reservoir and its surrounding areas. The overall abundance of microplastics in the water was 3.05 ± 1.16 items per L and in the sediment was 0.15 ± 0.06 items per g dry weight, which is relatively low compared to other reservoirs in China. The dominant components of microplastics detected in the Chitian Reservoir were polypropylene (PP), rayon, and polyester. Physical morphology analysis of microplastics showed that fibers with small particle sizes (<1 mm) and white color were the predominant characteristics in both the surface water and sediment. The domestic sewage from surrounding residents and agricultural wastewater may be the primary sources of microplastics in the reservoir. Ecological risk assessment revealed that the overall pollution load index (PLI) in the surface water (0.65) and sediment (0.51) of the Chitian Reservoir and its surrounding area is at a low level. The potential ecological hazards (RI) of microplastics (0.13 to 336.78 in water; 0.23 to 465.93 in sediment) in most sites fall within the scope of level I, but those in a few sites are at level II due to the presence of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). This study enriches the data on microplastic pollution in inland reservoir systems, providing fundamental reference information for future ecotoxicological studies and the management of microplastic pollution control.

Distribution and characteristics of microplastics in 16 benthic organisms in Haizhou Bay, China: Influence of habitat, feeding habits and trophic level

Microplastics (MPs) are widely found in the ocean and cause a serious risk to marine organisms. However, fewer studies have been conducted on benthic organisms. This study conducted a case study on the pollution characteristics of MPs on 16 marine benthic organisms in Haizhou Bay, and analyzed the effects of habitat, trophic level, and feeding mode on the MPs pollution characters. The results showed that MPs were detected in all 16 organisms with an average abundance of 8.84 ± 9.14 items/individual, which is in the middle-high level in the international scale. Among the detected MPs, the main material was cellophane. This study showed that benthic organisms can be used as indicator organisms for MPs pollution. MPs in organisms can be affected by their habitat, trophic level, and feeding mode. Comprehensive analysis of MPs in benthic organisms will contribute to fully understand the characterization and source resolution of MPs pollution.
