Recent progress in ZnCr and NiCr layered double hydroxides and based photocatalysts for water treatment and clean energy production

In pursuit of advancing photocatalysts for superior performance in water treatment and clean energy generation, researchers are increasingly focusing on layered double hydroxides (LDHs) which have garnered significant attention due to their customizable properties, morphologies, distinctive 2D layered structure and flexible options for modifying anions and cations. No review has previously delved specifically into ZnCr and NiCr LDH-based photocatalysts and therefore, this review highlights the recent surge in ZnCr and NiCr-based LDHs as potential photocatalysts for their applications in water purification and renewable energy generation. The structural and fundamental characteristics of layered double hydroxides and especially ZnCr-LDHs and NiCr-LDHs are outlined. Further, the various synthesis techniques for the preparation of ZnCr-LDHs, NiCr-LDHs and their composite and heterostructure materials have been briefly discussed. The applicability of ZnCr-LDH and NiCr-LDH based photocatalysts in tackling significant issues in water treatment and sustainable energy generation is the main emphasis of this review. It focuses on photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater, elucidating the principles and advancements for enhancing the efficiency of these materials. It also explores their role in H2 production through water splitting, conversion of CO2 into valuable fuels and NH3 synthesis from N2, shedding light on their potential for clean energy solutions. The insights presented herein offer valuable guidance for researchers working towards sustainable solutions for environmental remediation and renewable energy generation.

Layered double hydroxide nanoparticles for a smartphone digital image colorimetry-based determination of fluoride ions in water, milk and dental products

A novel smartphone digital image colorimetry-based approach was developed for fluoride ion determination, using layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanoparticles (Mg2Al(OH)7) as sorbents for analyte preconcentration and as a source of a central metal ion for a colored complex formation. A cotton rotating disk provided effective retention of the LDH nanoparticles during solid-phase microextraction and elution, excluding time-consuming centrifugation process. In the proposed procedure, the nanoparticles acted as aluminum ion source for alizarin complexone-Al3+-F- complex formation. An image of Eppendorf tube, containing the colored complex solution was obtained by a smartphone and converted, using the RGB model for fluoride ion determination. The procedure had a linear range of 0.20-20 mg L-1 with a limit of detection of 0.06 mg L-1. The developed procedure provided effective fluoride separation from various matrices for its determination by a smartphone without additional sample pretreatment.

Diatomite@MoS2 Nanocomposite Layers as Composite Coating Targeting for Mg Alloys Endowed with Properties of Anticorrosion and Antiwear

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) demonstrates promising applications in enhancing the corrosion and wear resistance of metals, but the susceptibility of this nanomaterial to agglomeration hinders its overall performance. In this study, the externally assisted corrosion inhibitor sodium molybdate (SM) was successfully constructed in diatomaceous earth (DE) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). This not only served as a molybdenum source for MoS2 but also enabled the preparation of DE@MoS2-SM microcapsules, achieving a corrosion inhibitor loading of up to 23.23%. The corrosion testing reveals that the composite coating, when compared to the pure epoxy coating, exhibits an impedance modulus 2 orders of magnitude higher (1.80 × 109 Ω·cm2), offering prolonged protection for magnesium alloys over a 40 day period. Furthermore, a filler content of 3% sustains a coefficient of friction (COF) at 0.55 for an extended duration, indicating commendable stability and wear resistance. The protective performance is ascribed to the synergistic enhancement of corrosion and wear resistance in the coatings, facilitated by the pore structure of DE, the high hardness of MoS2, and the obstructive influence of Na2MoO4. This approach offers a straightforward and efficient means of designing microcapsules for use in corrosive environments, whose application can be extended in industrial fields. In particular, we promote the application of nautical instruments, underwater weapons, and seawater batteries in the shipbuilding industry and marine engineering.

2D Nanomaterials Reinforced Organic Coatings for Marine Corrosion Protection: State of the Art, Challenges, and Future Prospectives

2D nanomaterials, with extraordinary physical and chemical characteristics, have long been regarded as promising nanofillers in organic coatings for marine corrosion protection. The past decade has witnessed the high-speed progress of 2D nanomaterial-reinforced organic composite coatings, and plenty of breakthroughs have been achieved as yet. This review covers an in-depth and all-around outline of the up-to-date advances in 2D nanomaterial-modified organic coatings employed for the marine corrosion protection realm. Starting from a brief introduction to 2D nanomaterials, the preparation strategies and properties are illustrated. Subsequently, diverse protection models based on composite coatings for marine corrosion protection are also introduced, including physical barrier, self-healing, as well as cathodic protection, respectively. Furthermore, computational simulations and critical factors on the corrosion protection properties of composite coatings are clarified in detail. Finally, the remaining challenges and prospects for marine corrosion protection based on 2D nanomaterials reinforced organic coatings are highlighted.

Protective and Flame-Retardant Bifunctional Epoxy-Based Nanocomposite Coating by Intercomponent Synergy between Modified CaAl-LDH and rGO

Extensive utilization in various settings poses extra requirements of coatings beyond just anticorrosion properties. Herein, 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) intercalated CaAl-based layered double hydroxide (CaAl-8HQ-LDH) was loaded on reduced GO (rGO) through a one-pot hydrothermal reaction, which was employed as the nanofiller endowing the epoxy (EP/CaAl-8HQ LDH@rGO) with excellent flame-retardancy while ensuring efficient protection for mild steel. Results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) demonstrated the durability of the EP/CaAl-8HQ LDH@rGO-coated specimen, with the impedance at the lowest frequency (|Z|0.01Hz) maintained as 1.84 × 1010 Ω cm2 after 120 days of immersion in a 3.5 wt % NaCl solution. Even for the scratched EP/CaAl-8HQ LDH@rGO system, only a slight decline in |Z|0.01Hz was observed during 180 h of exposure to the NaCl solution, indicating a self-healing feature supported by salt spray tests. UL-94 burning tests revealed the V-0 rating for EP/CaAl-8HQ LDH@rGO with improved thermostability. Strong physical barrier from two-dimensional rGO and the release of 8-HQ from LDH interlayers accounted for the anticorrosive and self-healing properties. However, O2-concentration dilution and charring-layer promotion governed the flame-retardant behavior of the nanocomposite coating. The intercomponent synergy of nanofillers achieved in this work may provide a useful reference for designing multifunctional coatings.

Eco-friendly Silane-Based Coating for Mitigation of Carbon Steel Corrosion in Marine Environments

Losses from corrosion contribute roughly 3-5% of the gross domestic product of developed nations, and among the many methods used to avoid corrosion, using silane-based coatings is seen to be of the biggest importance due to their low toxicity and superior adhesive qualities. It is essential to develop an anti-corrosion coating that is efficient, economical, and eco-friendly. The corrosion resistance and durability of various silane-based coatings such as 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane (BTSE), bis[3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl]tetrasulfide (TESPT), and vinyltrimethylsilane (VTES) for carbon steel 1018 substrates were investigated in a high-salinity environment (4.5 wt % NaCl). The corrosion resistance performance was evaluated via potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. Results revealed that the TESPT film (pH ≈ 7) has the best corrosion resistance performance on the carbon steel surface in the aggressive chloride environment, that is, 99.6%. The high corrosion resistance of the TESPT film is due to the hydrophobic nature of this silane, which leads to the formation of a stable and dense film. These results were supported by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analyses.

Antibacterial Host-Guest Intercalated LDH-Adorned Polyurethane for Accelerated Dermal Wound Healing

Curcumin has a limited clinical application because of its extremely poor accessibility. In the present study, improved curcumin bioavailability within a castor oil polyurethane/layered double hydroxide (LDH) wound cover was achieved by preparing a curcumin p-sulfonic acid calix[4]arene (SC4A) inclusion complex. Then, it was utilized to intercalate MgAl-layered double hydroxide (MgAl-LDH) nanosheets. The incorporation of the nanostructure into a PU/Cur-SC4A-LDH film provided bacteria-killing performance against both Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Escherichia coli bacteria. This finding is due to an increase in curcumin bioavailability in the PU matrix. Furthermore, all PU nanocomposites exhibited appropriate cytocompatibility based on an MTT assay. Mainly, the proliferation of L929 fibroblast cells in contact with the PU/Cur-SC4A-LDH sample was significantly further enhanced than that for other nanocomposites within 7 days. This observation can be related to the better availability of curcumin on the film's surface, which causes an improvement in the proliferation rate of cells. Regarding the histological results, the hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) images showed faster epidermal layer formation and a larger quantity of matured hair follicles for PU/Cur-SC4A-LDH-healed wounds in comparison with those for the negative control over a period of 28 days. Thus, this practical healing ability of the PU/Cur-SC4A-LDH nanocomposite makes it a promising candidate as a wound dressing film.

Rising of MXenes: Novel 2D-functionalized nanomaterials as a new milestone in corrosion science - a critical review

Corrosion is a natural process between a metal and its environment that can gradually cause catastrophic damage to the metal equipment, which would have economic implications. Consequently, several protective methods have been utilized to prevent metals from severe degradation. Organic polymeric coatings have been widely used as the most convenient and cost-effective method to boost metals' anti-corrosion properties. Nonetheless, these coatings have a significant amount of solvent, resulting in shrinkage and micro defects in the films during the curing process. Many studies have verified that transition metal carbides/nitrides (MXenes) can form a "labyrinth effect" in the polymeric coatings due to their "nano-barrier effect". Furthermore, based on their sheet-like structures, they can considerably cover the surface defects of the polymeric films. Therefore, the penetration of corrosive elements can be substantially curbed. It is the first review that specifically focused on the new family of 2D nanomaterials, i.e., MXenes, and discussed their applications in corrosion protection systems. The MXenes' pros and cons in the polymeric matrixes as nanofillers will be clarified. Moreover, the synthesis and functionalization methods of the MXenes, their applications, and corrosion protection mechanism will be explored. Subsequently, the MXenes' superiority over other 2D nanomaterials will be highlighted while their future perspectives and industrial applications will be predicted.

Insight into the Preparation of MgAl-Layered Double Hydroxide (LDH) Intercalated with Nitrates and Chloride Adsorption Ability Study

In recent years, layered double hydroxide (LDH) has attracted extensive attention of researchers in the field of corrosion protection due to its unique structure and anion exchange characteristics. However, its chloride adsorption capacity remains to be further optimized to increase its corrosion protection ability. In this work, the influence of reactant concentration on the prepared MgAl-LDH intercalated with nitrates was investigated, and the morphology, composition, and structure were characterized by scanning electronic microscopy/energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM/EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The results indicate that the reactant concentration did not have an obvious influence on the particle size and morphology of LDH, while the composition and crystalline structure were changed to some extent. The corresponding reasons were interpreted deeply. The chloride absorption behavior was investigated, and the powder after immersion in NaCl solutions with different concentrations was characterized by XRD to explain the difference in chloride adsorption amounts. The MgAl-LDH powder synthesized at higher concentrations presented excellent chloride adsorption ability with a Qm value of 155.88 mg/g, which was much better than that reported in the literature. This work demonstrated the superior chloride adsorption of the synthesized MgAl-LDH, and it is of great significance for providing a solid foundation and guidance for the industrial application of LDH in the field of corrosion protection in the future.

Corrosion Resistance Evaluation of Self-Healing Epoxy Coating Based on Dual-Component Capsules Containing Resin and Curing Agent

In this study, a self-healing epoxy coating was prepared by incorporating a dual capsule healing system including epoxy resin and its amine-based curing agent. The emulsion electrospray technique was used for encapsulating the healing agents in poly(styrene co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) as shell material. Characterizing the prepared microcapsules (MCs) by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) revealed their spherical morphology with the particle size of 827 nm and 749 nm for epoxy and amine cores, respectively. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results confirmed successful encapsulation with no side chemical reaction between the encapsulated core and shell materials. The effects of embedding MCs on the physical and mechanical properties of the epoxy coating matrix were studied by pull-off adhesion, conical mandrel bending, and gloss tests. In addition, the prepared coatings’ self-healing performance was evaluated by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization (Tafel) experiments. The results revealed that the coating sample containing 1 wt% of core-shell MCs (a mixture of epoxy and amine-containing MCs with a 50 : 50 weight ratio) showed the best corrosion performance with 99% self-healing efficiency.

Layered double hydroxides intercalated with methyl orange as a controlled-release corrosion inhibitor for iron in chloride media

In this study, the corrosion inhibition properties of nanocontainer-type layered double hydroxide (LDH) are evaluated on iron that is immersed in a 3.5% NaCl aqueous solution. LDH ZnAl-NO3 was synthesized via coprecipitation. The material presents satisfactory crystallinity with a Zn/Al ratio of 2:1. Methyl orange (MO) has been added into the synthesis process by exchange with nitrate ions and/or by adsorption of MO onto LDH surfaces (LDH-MO). Iron was immersed in solutions with various concentrations of LDH and LDH-MO ranged 1–6 gl−1, and the corrosion inhibition properties were investigated using linear sweep votammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and SEM. Based on pitting potential studies, LDH has demonstrated inhibition of the pitting corrosion process, and the optimal concentration was identified as 2 gl−1. The presence of MO in LDH provides excellent anticorrosive properties with a mixed inhibition mechanism. The corrosion potential of LDH-MO presents more noble values and exchange current densities that are one order of magnitude less than those of the bare iron after 72 h of immersion in a 3.5% NaCl aqueous solution. EIS results corroborated that the corrosion resistance increased when 2 gl−1 of LDH-MO was in solution. SEM images support the anticorrosive behaviour of the LDH-MO.

Layer-by-Layer Assembly of Electroactive Dye/LDHs Nanoplatelet Matrix Film for Advanced Dual Electro-optical Sensing Applications

It proved that the most destructive effects of the toxic Al3+ ion on the human nervous system and disease that are involved with this system, such as Alzheimer's. The development of solid-state electrodes is still in its infancy during the sensor-based detection methods for Al3+. Hence, in this study, a novel flexible ITO/PET-based electrochemical solid-state sensor was designed and constructed. Modification of the surface of electrode bedding was done by layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of Mg-Al LDH. nanoplatelets along with alizarin red S (ARS) in an interconnected matrix film. In the molecular design of sensing base of the electrode, the electroactive organic units (ARS molecules) present in the ITO/PET-layered (ARS/LDHs)n matrix are involved in electrochemical reactions when exposed to the target molecule (Al3+ ion), so the electrochemical changes of the new formed Al-chelated system are detectable. This type of sensor is used for sensitive and selective detection of Al3+. The minimum sheet resistance, morphology and high electrocatalytic activity of the modified matrix film are obtained in the fifth cycle of LbL assembly technique. In this electrochemical sensor, both electrochemical and optical methods were detected with high sensitivity and selectivity of Al3+, so that in a cyclic voltammetry electrochemical method, the lower detection limit of 10.1 nM with a linear range of [0.2-120 μM] was obtained compared to the fluorescence-based optical method.
