Contaminant profiles for surface water, sediment, flora and fauna associated with the mangrove fringe along middle and lower eastern Tampa Bay

Concentrations, sources and risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sediments from the Parnaiba Delta basin, Northeast Brazil

The Parnaíba River is the main river in the Parnaíba Delta basin, the largest delta in the Americas. About 18 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were identified and the environmental risk associated with the sediments was evaluated. The study found that PAHs levels ranged from 5.92 to 1521.17 ng g-1, which was classified as low to high pollution, and that there were multiple sources of pollution along the river, with pyrolytic sources predominating, mainly from urban activity such as trucking, although the influence of rural activity cannot be ruled out. PAHs correlated with black carbon and organic matter and showed high correlation with acenaphthylene, phenanthrene, pyrene, benzo(a)anthracene, chrysene, benzo(ghi)perylene, and ∑PAHs. The benzo(a)pyrene levels were classified as a risk to aquatic life because the threshold effect level and the probable effect level were exceeded. In addition, the sediments were classified as slightly contaminated with a benzo(a)pyrene toxicity equivalent value of 108.43 ng g-1. Thus, the priority level PAH exhibited carcinogenic and mutagenic activity that posed a potential risk to human health.

Aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface sediments as a tool for the assessment of the contamination status of mangrove forests in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil)

The distribution of aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface sediments from mangrove forests of the Rio de Janeiro State was investigated. Ten sampling stations were selected in the mangroves of Sepetiba Bay and the Jacarepaguá Lagoon Complex (JLC), which are areas affected by multiple human activities. The total aliphatic hydrocarbons concentrations showed marked variation between samples (27-407 μg g^-1), mostly related to the total organic carbon contents. The total PAHs concentration ranged between 38 and 792 ng g^-1. Diagnostic indices and statistical analysis showed that the mangrove forests can be divided into three groups: the western portion of Sepetiba Bay with the lowest level of contamination; the inner portion of the bay with the most intense presence of local sources of contamination, especially of pyrolytic character; and the JLC with a greater accumulation of hydrocarbons, mainly derived from petroleum combustion, resultant from the intense urbanization.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in mangrove ecosystems: A review

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic pollutants of increasing concern in the different fields of the environment and human health. There are 16 of them that are recognized as priority pollutants by the US environmental protection agency due to their mutagenic and carcinogenic potentials. Due to their hydrophobicity and stability, they are persistent in the environment and can be transported over long distances. Their toxicological effects on multiple species, including humans, as well as their bioaccumulation in the food web became major topics in organic pollutants research this last decade. In the environment, multiple studies have been conducted on their accumulation in the soil and their degradation processes resulting in numerous review papers. However, the dynamics of PAHs in mangrove ecosystems is not yet completely understood. In this review paper, an exhaustive presentation of what is known about PAHs and their transfer, accumulation, and degradation in mangrove ecosystems is offered. This article brings to light the knowledge already acquired on the subject and the perspective research necessary to fully comprehend PAHs dynamics in mangrove ecosystems.

Accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface sediment residues of Mahanadi River Estuary: Abundance, source, and risk assessment

In this study, we examined the distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments from the Mahanadi River Estuary (MRE), identified sources, and evaluated the ecological toxicity. The PAHs distributions in MRE ranged from 13.1 to 685.4 ng g^-1 (dry weight), with a mean value of 192.91 ± 177.56 ng g^-1 (dry weight). Sediments at sites S11, S8, and S13 have the highest 3-rings, 4-rings, and 5-rings PAHs, respectively. In MRE, pyrene has a significantly higher concentration with a mean value of 30.51 ng g^-1, followed by Fluoranthene (86.2 ng g^-1), Chrysene (67.4 ng g^-1), and Benzo(k)fluoranthene (54.2 ng g^-1). Site S8 had a higher total PAH concentration than sites S11, S13, and S1. The diagnostic and principal component analysis suggests that PAHs originated from petroleum, oil, biomass, and coal combustion. Higher toxic and mutagenic equivalent quotients indicate potential aquatic toxicity and a need for continuous monitoring of MRE for PAHs pollution.

Characterization, Behavior, and Risk Assessment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the Estuary Sediments

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent toxic substances that have ubiquitous presence in water, air, soil, and sediment environments. The growth of PAH toxicities and related ecotoxicology risk in estuary sediment has a serious concern. Present study examined the PAHs concentration, sources, and ecological risk from selected sites in Subarnarekha River estuary (SRE) sediment deposits. The sum of toxic 16 PAHs was ranged from 36.8 to 670.8 ng/g (mean = 223.46 ± 196.35 ng/g). The total PAH concentration varied significantly among the sampling sites (range 511.3 ng/g to 233.8 ng/g) based on allochthonous contaminant loads. Among the 16 compounds, Phen had the highest concentration (40.18 ng/g), followed by Pye (31.86 ng/g), Flur (29.36 ng/g), and NA (19.33 ng/g). Most of the sampling sites contained abundant 3-ring and 4-5-ring PAHs. Based on diagnostic ratios and PCA analysis petroleum combustion, biomass, and coal-burning have been identified as the major sources. The PAHs had high mutagenic equivalent factor and toxic equivalent factor values posing great ecological threats and health risks.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in coastal wetlands: A review of their occurrences, toxic effects, and biogeochemical cycling

Coastal wetlands, such as mangroves, seagrass beds, and salt marshes, are highly threatened by increasing anthropic pressures, including chemical pollution. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have attracted attention in these particularly vulnerable ecosystems, due to their bioaccumulative, pervasive, and ecotoxic behavior. This article reviews and summarizes available information regarding current levels, biogeochemical cycling, and effects of POPs on coastal wetlands. Sediment POP levels were compared with international quality guidelines, revealing many areas where compounds could cause damage to biota. Despite this, toxicological studies on some coastal wetland plants and microorganisms showed a high tolerance to those levels. These taxonomic groups are likely to play a key role in the cycling of the POPs, with an active role in their accumulation, immobilization, and degradation. Toxicity and biogeochemical processes varied markedly along three main axes; namely species, environmental conditions, and type of pollutant. While more focused research on newly and unintentionally produced POPs is needed, mainly in salt marshes and seagrass beds, with the information available so far, the environmental behavior, spatial distribution, and toxicity level of the studied POPs showed similar patterns across the three studied ecosystems.

Metabolic process and spatial partition dynamics of Atrazine in an estuary-to-bay system, Jiaozhou bay

The spatial distributions of atrazine and six types of metabolites in water, suspended particulate sediment (SPS), and surface sediment in an estuary-to-bay system were analyzed. The water distance of metabolites demonstrated that degradation was more active in coastal zone and the Desisopropylatrazine had the shortest half-distance of 1.6 Km from the river mouth. The dechlorination-hydroxylation metabolites were the dominant pollutants in the bay and the Didealkyl-atrazine (DDA), Deisopropylhydroxy-atrazine (DIHA), and Deethylhydroxy-atrazine (DEHA) had higher concentrations in all three mediums. The DDA had the biggest content (6.58 ng/g) in the coastal sediment. The DIHA was the only pollutant had bigger concentration during the transport, and the others continually degraded with smaller value. The spatial distributions of pollutants in sediment had different patterns in water with SPS. The water-particle phase partition coefficient (K_p) analysis indicated that the partition process was more active in the estuary than the bay, and the metabolites had stronger capacity than atrazine. The correlations between K_p with octanol-water partitioning coefficient showed their physic-chemical properties were the important factors for vertical partition between seawater with sediment. The correlations with marine environmental factors demonstrated that the metabolite type was the direct factor for the redistributions during the transport.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surficial sediments from selected rivers in the western Niger Delta of Nigeria: Spatial distribution, sources, and ecological and human health risks

This study assessed the concentrations, sources, and risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments from the Rivers Niger, Ase and Forcados in the western Niger Delta. The concentrations of PAHs (in μg kg^-1 dry weight), as determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, in sediments from these rivers varied from 2400 to 19,000, 2930 to 16,100, and from 1620 to 19,800 for the Niger, Ase and Forcados Rivers respectively. High molecular weight (HMW) PAHs were the most prevalent compounds present in these sediments. An assessment of the possible ecological and human health risks suggested high risks for both organisms and humans. The PAH source analysis suggested that sediments from these river systems were contaminated with PAHs arising from burning of biomass, gasoline/diesel emissions, burning of natural gas, and oil spillages.

Seasonal variation of total mercury transfer through a tropical mangrove food web, Setiu Wetlands

Seasonal variations in total mercury concentrations [Hg] and trophic transfer through the food web were assessed using stable isotopic tracers for the Setiu Wetlands, Terengganu. The [Hg] measured in surface sediments and biota varied inversely between wet and dry seasons. Increased rainfall and water disturbance during the wet season are suggested as the main factors releasing Hg from surface sediments and enhancing the bioavailability of Hg to biota. The elevated Hg levels associated with the leaf stage suggested that litterfall and atmospheric deposition may be the main Hg inputs into mangrove food webs. The positive relationships between log [Hg] and δ¹⁵N provided evidence for Hg biomagnification, however low trophic magnification slopes in both seasons indicated that the ecological risk of Hg in the wetland would be negligible. The [Hg] in fish and commercial crabs were below the permitted limits for human consumption.

Distribution and risk of mercury in the sediments of mangroves along South China Coast

The importance of mangrove was widely reported. However, the potential risks of pollutants (e.g., Hg) accumulated in the mangroves are often ignored. Thus, the present study aimed to explore the distribution and risk of mercury (Hg) in the sediments of mangroves along South China Coast. Results showed that concentrations of total Hg ranged from 0.0815 to 0.6377 mg/kg, with an arithmetic mean value of 0.2503 mg/kg. The contamination index (P_i) showed mild pollution toxicity risks in NS, slight toxicity risks in DZG, QZ, SY, ND, GQ, TLG, and free pollutions in BMW, SJ, ZJK and BLHK. NS, DZG and SY scored the highest values of I_geo among the eleven mangrove regions studied, indicating moderate to heavy pollution inputs in these regions. As for the distribution of Hg in the sediments along tidal gradient, concentrations of Hg in the sediments sharply increased from seaward mudflat to landward mangrove, corresponding with the increases of TOC. In summary, the present data indicated that mangrove ecosystem is efficient in Hg reservoir. However, the potential ecological risks of Hg, especially in some mangrove regions easily affected by human activities, should be noted.

A water quality prediction method based on the multi-time scale bidirectional long short-term memory network

As an important factor affecting the mangrove wetland ecosystem, water quality has become the focus of attention in recent years. Therefore, many studies have focused on the prediction of water quality to help establish a regulatory framework for the assessment and management of water pollution and ecosystem health. To make a more accurate and comprehensive forecast analysis of water quality, we propose a method for water quality prediction based on the multi-time scale bidirectional LSTM network. In the method, we improve data integrity and data volume through data preprocessing. And the network processes input data forward and backward and considers the dependencies at multiple time scales. Besides, we use the Box-Behnken experimental design method to adjust hyper-parameters in the process of modeling. In this study, we apply this method to the water quality prediction research of Beilun Estuary, and the performance of our proposed model is evaluated and compared with other models. The experiment results show that this model has better performance in water quality prediction than that of using LSTM or bidirectional LSTM alone. Graphical Abstract Schematic of research work.

The distribution and risk of mercury in Shenzhen mangroves, representative urban mangroves affected by human activities in China

Sediments were collected from urban mangroves in Shenzhen, China, including Shajing (SJ) and Xixiang (XX) featured with industrial district; Futian (FT) and Baguang (BG) featured with central business district and ecological preserve, respectively. Distributions, pollution levels and human health risks of Hg were explored. In both surface and vertical sediments, mean Hg concentration was highest in SJ mangrove, which may be due to its proximity to point-source discharge of Maozhou River in Pearl River Estuary, China. Sediment properties (pH, salinity, TOC and particle size) had limited impact on Hg accumulation due to their non-significant correlations. Geo-accumulation index, pollution load index, potential ecological risk index, and the ecological risk assessment code showed the highest ecological risk in SJ mangrove, followed by XX, FT, and BG mangroves. The assessment of human health risks showed that public experience little adverse health risk due to exposure to Hg polluted sediment in urban mangroves.

Assessment of brazilian mangroves hydrocarbon contamination from a latitudinal perspective

The present study investigated the contamination of Brazilian mangroves sediments by aliphatic hydrocarbons (AHs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Samples were obtained from mangroves located along the brazilian coast, between the northern coast and the austral limit of the occurrence of this ecosystem. Total AH ranged from 1.9 to 311.3 μg g^-1 and compound distribution pointed to biogenic sources, mainly from mangrove forests, and petrogenic sources, with a significant presence of an unresolved complex mixture in some areas. PAH values (34.4-977.3 ng g^-1) indicated low to moderate contamination levels in mangrove sediments, reflecting the socioeconomic diversity observed along the Brazilian coast. The predominant PAH sources ranged from pyrolytic to petrogenic. According to sediment quality reference values, the evaluated sediments are not likely to cause biological effects, but deserve attention due to the current expansion scenario of oil prospecting activities off the Brazilian coast.

Historical sedimentary deposition and ecotoxicological impact of aromatic biomarkers in sediment cores from ten coral reefs of the Persian Gulf, Iran

The present study determines the levels, vertical distributions, source apportionment and ecological risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in ten sediment cores of coral reef in the Persian Gulf, Iran, one of the important oil polluted marine areas in the world. The main purpose of this study was to determine the spatio-vertical distribution pattern of PAHs pollution at the four hot spot zones on the Gulf: dense industrial, medium industrial, urbanized and non-impacted zones over the past few years. Sediment quality and ecological risk were also assessed in order to determine the pollutants of concern. In detail, 23 parent (PPAHs) and 16 alkylated PAHs (APAHs), along with retene and perylene, were determined in sediment cores (0-40 cm depth). The vertical distribution of all PAHs showed a wide variation among sampling stations and depths, with a decreasing trend of concentration from surface to bottom, and a peak at 12 cm. Total concentrations of PPAHs and APAHs ranged from 35 to 1927 ng g^-1 dw and 19 to 1794 ng g^-1 dw respectively, with the highest concentrations at the industrial zone. The diagnostic ratio for PAHs and perylene (3 to 1277 ng g^-1 dw) indicated mixed sources of PAHs, with dominance of petrogenic origins at the industrial zone and natural diagenetic inputs, respectively. The PAH concentration depicted a significant decreasing trend along the length of the core with an abrupt increase within the core length 12-20 cm. Temporal variations in contaminants can be linked to economic, coastal developments and industrial growth. Overall, the baseline data on geographical distribution, congener profiles, sources and vertical deposition of PAHs in the Persian Gulf area would be useful to establish proper monitoring plans for this sensitive ecosystem.

A review on mercury biogeochemistry in mangrove sediments: Hotspots of methylmercury production?

Wetlands are highly productive and biologically diverse environments that provide numerous ecosystem services, but can also be sources of methylmercury (MeHg) production and export. Mangrove wetlands contribute up to 15% of the coastal sediment carbon storage and ~10% of the particulate terrestrial carbon exported to the ocean. Thus, mercury (Hg) methylation in mangrove sediments and subsequent MeHg output to adjacent waters could have a great impact on global Hg cycling. In this review, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the literature on worldwide Hg concentrations in mangrove ecosystems, and the results reveal that a large range of total Hg (THg) and MeHg concentrations is detected in mangrove systems. Then, we discuss the potential roles of organic matter (OM) in controlling the Hg biogeochemistry in mangrove sediments. The intense OM decomposition by anoxic reduction (e.g., sulfate reduction) drastically affects sediment chemistries, such as redox potential, pH, and sulfur speciation, all of which may have a great impact on MeHg production. While the outwelling of carbon from mangroves has been extensively examined, little is known about their roles in exporting MeHg to adjacent waters. Our understanding of Hg biogeochemical processes in mangrove systems is constrained by the limited MeHg data and a lack of in-depth studies on the Hg methylation potential in this ecologically important environment. More efforts are needed to gain better insights into the contributions mangrove wetlands to the global Hg cycle.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in superficial water from a tropical estuarine system: Distribution, seasonal variations, sources and ecological risk assessment

This study aimed to evaluate the PAH distribution, sources, seasonal variations and ecological risk assessment in superficial water from the Japaratuba River, Brazil. PAH concentrations ranged from 4 to 119ngL^-1. It was observed that the PAH total concentrations and profiles showed significant differences when comparing the dry season (summer) with the rainy season (winter). Furthermore, most of the PAH originated from pyrogenic sources in the winter, whereas a mixture of sources was observed in the summer. PAH concentration levels found in this study were considered lower than those obtained in other estuarine systems. Ecological risk assessment was determined for individual PAH, based on the risk quotient (RQ) to evaluate the risk of aquatic biota's exposure to PAH. Results suggested that the Japaratuba River has achieved a moderate degree of ecological risk for high molecular weight, showing the importance of identifying these carcinogenic and mutagenic compounds in aquatic systems.

Mercury content of blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus) from southern New England coastal habitats: Contamination in an emergent fishery and risks to human consumers

Total mercury (Hg; ppm dry weight) was measured in blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus, collected from Narraganset Bay and adjacent coastal lagoons and tidal rivers (Rhode Island/Massachusetts, USA) from May to August 2006-2016. For juvenile crabs (21-79mm carapace width, CW), total Hg was significantly greater in chelae muscle tissue (mean±1 SD=0.32±0.21ppm; n=65) relative to whole bodies (0.21±0.16ppm; n=19), and irrespective of tissue-type, crab Hg was positively related to CW indicating bioaccumulation of the toxicant. Across a broader range of crab sizes (43-185mm CW; n=465), muscle Hg concentrations were significantly higher in crabs from the Taunton River relative to other locations (0.71±0.35ppm and 0.20±0.10ppm, respectively). Spatial variations in crab Hg dynamics were attributed to habitat-specific Hg burdens of their prey, including bivalves, gastropods, polychaetes, and shrimp. Prey Hg, in turn, was directly related to localized sediment Hg and methylmercury conditions. Biota-sediment accumulation factors for crabs and prey were negatively correlated with sediment organic content, verifying that organically-enriched substrates reduce Hg bioavailability. From a human health perspective, frequent consumption of crabs from the Taunton River may pose a human health risk (23% of legal-size crabs exceeded US EPA threshold level); thus justifying spatially-explicit Hg advisories for this species.

Distribution, sources and ecological risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in water and sediments from Tiber River and estuary, Italy

The concentration, source and ecological risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the Tiber River and its environmental impact on the Tyrrhenian Sea (Central Mediterranean Sea) were estimated. The 16 priority PAHs were determined in the water dissolved phase (DP), suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sediments collected from 21 sites in four different seasons. Total concentrations of PAHs ranged from 10.3 to 951.6ngL(-1) and from 36.2 to 545.6ngg(-1) in water (sum of DP and SPM) and in sediment samples, respectively. The compositions of PAHs showed that 2- to 4-ring PAHs were abundant in DP, 4- to 6-ring PAHs were predominant in SPM samples, and 4- to 5-ring PAHs were abundant in sediments. The diagnostic ratio analysis indicated that the PAHs mainly had a pyrolytic source. The toxic equivalent concentration of carcinogenic PAHs was 45.3ngTEQg(-1), suggesting low carcinogenic risk for Tiber River. Total PAHs loads into the sea were calculated in about 3161.7kgyear(-1) showing that this river is one of the main contribution sources of these contaminants to the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Distribution and accumulation of mercury and copper in mangrove sediments in Shenzhen, the world's most rapid urbanized city

To investigate the influence of mangrove forest on heavy metal accumulation and storage in intertidal sediments, core sediments from natural mangrove, restored mangrove, and adjacent mud flat spanning the intertidal zone along the south coastline of the most heavily urbanized Deep bay, Guangdong province, China were analyzed. The average concentrations of mercury (Hg) in surface sediments of natural mangrove and restored mangrove were 172 and 151 ng g(-1), whereas those of copper (Cu) were 75 and 50 μg g(-1), respectively. Compared to those from other typical mangrove wetlands of the world, the metal levels in Shenzhen were at median to high levels, which is consistent with the fact that Shenzhen is in high exploitation and its mangrove suffer intensive impact from human activities. Hg and Cu concentration profiles indicated a higher metal accumulation in surface layers of sediments, in agreement with enrichment of organic matter contents. Maximum concentration, enrichment factors, and excess (background-deducted) concentration inventories of metals (Hg and Cu) were substantially different between environments, decreasing from natural mangrove sediments to restored mangrove sediments to mud flat. Furthermore, metal inputs to Futian mangrove decreased in the order natural mangrove > restored mangrove > mud flat, indicating that mangrove facilitated the accumulation and storage of Hg and Cu in sediment layers.
