Effect of temperature and salinity on egg hatching and description of the life cycle of Lernanthropus latis (Copepoda: Lernanthropidae) infecting barramundi, Lates calcarifer

Parasitic copepod (Lernanthropus kroyeri) on caged sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax): An estimation of abundance and internal infestation pressure

Infestation by parasitic copepods is a substantial problem in the cage culture of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). The Copepoda parasite, Lernanthropus kroyeri (Lernanthropidae), is one of the threats to the mariculture of sea bass. In the present study, we evaluated the data of abundance for L. kroyeri pre-adults and adult males (PAAM) and ovigerous adult females (AF_o ) to estimate the internal infection pressure (IIP) in the same cage environment. The sea bass infested by L. kroyeri was collected from grow-out sea cages located in Gulluk Bay (Turkey) in September and October 2019. Mean fish weight and length of sea bass were 75.79 ± 1.66 g and 21.40 ± 0.56 cm, respectively. The fixed lag method was used to predict the abundance of L. kroyeri adult females. The overall prevalence of L. kroyeri was 60%. The mean abundance of PAAM and AF_o varied from 0.8 ± 0.24 to 2.5 ± 0.67 and 2.9 ± 0.40 to 4.3 ± 0.55, respectively. The abundance of AF was strongly correlated with PAAM. The pattern of AF_o and PAAM was interpreted as an indication of the continuous infestation of L. kroyeri on sea bass. Our results showed that the correlation of AF_o abundance for five consecutive weeks was significant, representing the main determinative factor for the continuity of the parasitic load. In our approach, internal infestation pressure is the quantitative estimation of the potential infective copepodids, which are mainly characterized by AF abundance and the prevalence. We predicted that the internal infestation pressure could be high, even exceeding the 50.000 × 10⁶ potential infective copepodids for one sea cage with the fish density of 20 sea bass/m³ .

Life Cycle and Life History Strategies of Parasitic Crustacea

Different parasitic life strategies are described including four new life cycles: complex rebrooding, micro-male, mesoparasite and prey-predator transfer. Four new life cycle behaviours are named: nursery hiding, mid-moult stage, positive precursor (intraspecific antagonism) and negative precursor (ambush strategy). Further strategies discussed are opossum attack, double parasitism (doubling of the normal reproductive set), duplex arrangement (separated male-female pairs), simple rebrooding, and describing how displaced parasites and superinfections may partly elucidate life cycles. Proportional stunting masks life history effects of parasitism; cuckoo copepods are true parasites and not just associates; burrowing barnacles (acrothoracicans) are not parasites. Further findings based on life cycle information: branchiurans and pentastomes are possibly not related; firefly seed shrimp are not parasites; copepod pre-adult life cycle stages are common in the western pacific but rare in Caribbean; harpacticoids on vertebrates are not parasites; cuckoo copepods are true parasites; explained the importance of pennellid intermediate hosts. Crustacean parasite life cycles are largely unknown (1% of species). Most crustacean life cycles represent minor modifications from the ancestral free-living mode. Crustacean parasites have less complex and less modified life cycles than other major parasite groups. This limits their exploitation of, and effectiveness, in parasitism. However, these life cycles will be an advantage in Global Change. Most metazoan parasites will be eliminated while crustaceans (and nematodes) will inherit the new world of parasites.

The Life Cycle of the Parasitic Crustacean, Lernanthropus latis Yamaguti, 1954 (Copepoda: Lernanthropidae), on Marine-Cultured Fish, Lates calcarifer, from Setiu Wetland, Terengganu

Parasitic crustaceans of Lernanthropus latis were isolated from the host, the seabass, Lates calcarifer, obtained from a cage culture in Setiu Wetland, Terengganu. The adult females with egg were kept alive in vials containing 20 mL of filtered seawater and incubated at 30°C. The eggs were monitored every hour and the hatching periods were recorded. Three developmental stages were observed, namely, nauplii I, nauplii II, and infective copepodid. The infective copepodids were then transferred into a tank containing 60 litres of seawater with 150 fingerlings for infection purpose. One fish was sacrificed every 24 hr to inspect the next developmental stage. As a result, six more stages were obtained within 298 hrs starting from the infection day. The stages were known as fixed copepodid I, fixed copepodid II, fixed copepodid III, fixed copepodid IV, preadult, and adult. Parasitic L. latis takes a 483 hr period to complete a life cycle.
