Abstract
Plant biostimulants (PBs) are used globally to increase crop yield and productivity. PBs such as (Serendipita indica) or algal extracts stimulate and accelerate plant physiological processes. The physiological, ecological, and biochemical effects of (Serendipita indica) or algal extracts individually and in combination on basil plant (Ocimum basilicum L.) were investigated. Macroalgae samples were collected from Abu Qir, Alexandria, Egypt. The growth parameters, chlorophyll index, and biochemical composition of basil were analyzed at 90th day. The (Chlorella vulgaris) + (Serendipita indica) (MI + F) treatment increased chlorophyll index by 61.7% (SPAD) compared to control. (Chlorella vulgaris) had the highest growth hormones, including GA3 at 158.2 ppb, GA4 at 149.1 ppb, GA7 at 142.6 ppb, IAA at 136.6 ppb, and TC at 130.9 ppb, while (Ulva lactuca) had the lowest. The MI + F treatment yielded the highest essential oil and antioxidant values. Treatment with (Chlorella vulgaris) increased S. indica colonization by 66%. In contrast, Ulva lactuca and (Padina Pavonica) inhibited S. indica colonization by 80% and 40%, respectively. (Ulva lactuca) and (Padina Pavonica) inhibited S. indica colonization by 80% and 40%, respectively. Combined treatments had a greater influence on basil performance than the individual treatments. The evidence of synergistic/additive benefits to plants performance due to the interactive effects of (Chlorella vulgaris) and (Serendipita indica) had been studied. Complementary modes of action between (Chlorella vulgaris) and (Serendipita indica), through their components newly emerging properties on basil, may explain observed synergistic effects. This study explores the potential of microbial-algal interactions, particularly (Chlorella vulgaris) and (Serendipita indica), as innovative plant biostimulants. These interactions demonstrate positive effects on basil growth, offering promise for more effective microbial-based formulations to enhance crop productivity and sustainability in agriculture. These novelties will help create a second generation of PBs with integrated and complementary actions.

Abstract
Seaweeds are considered a biomass for third-generation biofuel, and hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is a valuable process for efficiently disposing of the excess of macroalgae biomass for conversion into multiple value-added products. However, the HTC process produces a liquid phase to be disposed of. The present study aims to investigate the effects of seed-priming treatment with three HTC-discarded liquid phases (namely AHL180, AHL240, and AHL300), obtained from different experimental procedures, on seed germination and plant growth and productivity of Phaseolus vulgaris L. To disentangle the osmotic effects from the use of AHL, isotonic solutions of polyethylene glycol (PEG) 6000 have also been tested. Seed germination was not affected by AHL seed-priming treatment. In contrast, PEG-treated samples showed significantly lower seed germination success. AHL-treated samples showed changes in plant biomass: higher shoot biomass was recorded especially in AHL180 samples. Conversely, AHL240 and AHL300 samples showed higher root biomass. The higher plant biomass values recorded in AHL-treated samples were the consequence of higher values of photosynthesis rate and water use efficiency, which, in turn, were related to higher stomatal density. Recorded data strongly support the hypothesis of the AHL solution reuse in agriculture in the framework of resource management and circular green economy.

Abstract
Agriculture sector is facing a lot of constraints such as climate change, increasing population and the use of chemicals, and fertilizers which have significant influence on sustainability. The excessive usage of chemical fertilizers and pesticides has created a significant risk to humans, animals, plants, and the environment. To reduce the dependency on chemical fertilizers and pesticides a biological-based alternative is required. Seaweeds are essential marine resources that contain bioactive compounds and they have several uses in agriculture. The use of seaweed extracts in agriculture can mitigate stress, enhance nutrient efficiency, and boost plant growth. The use of seaweed extracts and their components activate several signaling pathways and defense-related genes/enzymes. In this review, an attempt has been made to explain how seaweed extracts and their bioactive components induce tolerance and promote growth under stress conditions.

Abstract
Some agronomic practices not only promote the development of crop roots and increase overall plant performance but also affect colonisation by rhizosphere microorganisms. However, the composition and temporal dynamics of the tobacco rhizosphere microbiota under different root-promoting practices are poorly understood. Here, we characterised the tobacco rhizosphere microbiota at the knee-high, vigorous growing, and maturity stages under the application of potassium fulvic acid (PFA), γ-Polyglutamic acid (PGA), soymilk root irrigation (SRI), and conventional fertilization (CK) and its correlation with root characteristics and soil nutrients. The results showed that three root-promoting practices notably improved the dry and fresh root weights. Total nitrogen and phosphorus, available phosphorus and potassium, and organic matter contents in the rhizosphere markedly increased at the vigorous growing stage. The rhizosphere microbiota was changed through root-promoting practices. However, with tobacco growth, the change of rhizosphere microbiota showed a pattern of slow first and then fast and the microbiota of different treatments gradually approached. SRI reduced plant-pathogenic fungi but increased chemoheterotrophic and phototrophic bacteria, and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. PFA and PGA markedly increased arbuscular mycorrhizal and ectomycorrhizal fungi at the knee-high stage, which benefitted tobacco nutrient absorption. The correlation between rhizosphere microorganisms and environmental factors varied at different growth stages. Notably, the rhizosphere microbiota was more sensitive to environmental factors at the vigorous growing stage, and the interactions were more complex than in other stages. Furthermore, a variance partitioning analysis showed that the influence of root-soil interaction on the rhizosphere microbiota increased with tobacco growth. Overall, all three root-promoting practices could improve root characteristics, rhizosphere nutrient, and rhizosphere microbiota to varying degrees and increase the tobacco biomass, among which PGA had the most obvious effect and most suitable for tobacco cultivation. Our findings revealed the role of root-promoting practices in shaping the rhizosphere microbiota during plant growth and elucidated the assembly patterns and environmental drivers of crop rhizosphere microbiota driven by the application of root-promoting practices in agricultural production.

Abstract
In today's fast-shifting climate change scenario, crops are exposed to environmental pressures, abiotic and biotic stress. Hence, these will affect the production of agricultural products and give rise to a worldwide economic crisis. The increase in world population has exacerbated the situation with increasing food demand. The use of chemical agents is no longer recommended due to adverse effects towards the environment and health. Biocontrol agents (BCAs) and biostimulants, are feasible options for dealing with yield losses induced by plant stresses, which are becoming more intense due to climate change. BCAs and biostimulants have been recommended due to their dual action in reducing both stresses simultaneously. Although protection against biotic stresses falls outside the generally accepted definition of biostimulant, some microbial and non-microbial biostimulants possess the biocontrol function, which helps reduce biotic pressure on crops. The application of synergisms using BCAs and biostimulants to control crop stresses is rarely explored. Currently, a combined application using both agents offer a great alternative to increase the yield and growth of crops while managing stresses. This article provides an overview of crop stresses and plant stress responses, a general knowledge on synergism, mathematical modelling used for synergy evaluation and type of in vitro and in vivo synergy testing, as well as the application of synergism using BCAs and biostimulants in reducing crop stresses. This review will facilitate an understanding of the combined effect of both agents on improving crop yield and growth and reducing stress while also providing an eco-friendly alternative to agroecosystems.

Abstract
No-tillage cover crops contribute to better soil quality, being able to replace mechanized tillage management. This observation can only be made after several years of adopting conservationist practices and through research on soil-plant relationships. The objective of the research was to verify the relationship between the production components, physiological, root development, and physical-hydric properties of the soil in the yield of soybean grown in succession to different cover crops or with soil chiseling. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design with four replications, comparing the cultivation of sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea) and millet (Penninsetum glaucum L.) as cover crops and a treatment with soil chiseling. The evaluations were carried out during soybean (Glycine max L.) cultivation in the 2019/20 summer crop, that is, after 17 years of experimenting started in 2003. Rotation with sunn hemp increased soybean yield by 6% and 10%, compared with millet rotation and soil chiseling. The species used in crop rotation in a long-term no-tillage system interfere with the physical and water characteristics of the soil, affecting the physiological responses and soybean yield. The rotation with sunn hemp offers greater water stability to the plants and provides greater soybean yield in succession. Future research that better addresses year-to-year variation, architecture, and continuity of pores provided by crop rotation, and evaluations of gas exchange, fluorescence, and activities of stress enzymes in soybean plants may contribute to a better understanding of soil-plant relationships in long-term no-till.

Abstract
Drought is one of the most important abiotic stresses responsible for reduced crop yields. Drought stress induces morphological and physiological changes in plants and severely impacts plant metabolism due to cellular oxidative stress, even in C4 crops, such as sugarcane. Seaweed extract-based biostimulants can mitigate negative plant responses caused by drought stress. However, the effects of foliar application of such biostimulants on sugarcane exposed to drought stress, particularly on plant metabolism, stalk and sugar yields, juice purity, and sugarcane technological quality, have received little attention. Accordingly, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of foliar application of a seaweed extract-based biostimulant on late-harvest sugarcane during the driest period of the year. Three experiments were implemented in commercial sugarcane fields in Brazil in the 2018 (site 1), 2019 (site 2), and 2020 (site 3) harvest seasons. The treatments consisted of the application and no application of seaweed extract (SWE) as a foliar biostimulant in June (sites 2 and 3) or July (site 1). The treatments were applied to the fourth ratoon of sugarcane variety RB855536 at site 1 and the fifth and third ratoons of sugarcane variety SP803290 at sites 2 and 3, respectively. SWE was applied at a dose of 500 ml a.i. ha-1 in a water volume of 100 L ha-1. SWE mitigated the negative effects of drought stress and increased stalk yield per hectare by up to 3.08 Mg ha-1. In addition, SWE increased stalk sucrose accumulation, resulting in an increase in sugar yield of 3.4 kg Mg-1 per hectare and higher industrial quality of the raw material. In SWE-treated plants, Trolox-equivalent antioxidant capacity and antioxidant enzyme activity increased, while malondialdehyde (MDA) levels decreased. Leaf analysis showed that SWE application efficiently improved metabolic activity, as evidenced by a decrease in carbohydrate reserve levels in leaves and an increase in total sugars. By positively stabilizing the plant's cellular redox balance, SWE increased biomass production, resulting in an increase in energy generation. Thus, foliar SWE application can alleviate drought stress while enhancing sugarcane development, stalk yield, sugar production, and plant physiological and enzymatic processes.

Abstract
Under dryland conditions, annual and perennial food crops are exposed to dry spells, severely affecting crop productivity by limiting available soil moisture at critical and sensitive growth stages. Climate variability continues to be the primary cause of uncertainty, often making timing rather than quantity of precipitation the foremost concern. Therefore, mitigation and management of stress experienced by plants due to limited soil moisture are crucial for sustaining crop productivity under current and future harsher environments. Hence, the information generated so far through multiple investigations on mechanisms inducing drought tolerance in plants needs to be translated into tools and techniques for stress management. Scope to accomplish this exists in the inherent capacity of plants to manage stress at the cellular level through various mechanisms. One of the most extensively studied but not conclusive physiological phenomena is the balance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and scavenging them through an antioxidative system (AOS), which determines a wide range of damage to the cell, organ, and the plant. In this context, this review aims to examine the possible roles of the ROS-AOS balance in enhancing the effective use of water (EUW) by crops under water-limited dryland conditions. We refer to EUW as biomass produced by plants with available water under soil moisture stress rather than per unit of water (WUE). We hypothesize that EUW can be enhanced by an appropriate balance between water-saving and growth promotion at the whole-plant level during stress and post-stress recovery periods. The ROS-AOS interactions play a crucial role in water-saving mechanisms and biomass accumulation, resulting from growth processes that include cell division, cell expansion, photosynthesis, and translocation of assimilates. Hence, appropriate strategies for manipulating these processes through genetic improvement and/or application of exogenous compounds can provide practical solutions for improving EUW through the optimized ROS-AOS balance under water-limited dryland conditions. This review deals with the role of ROS-AOS in two major EUW determining processes, namely water use and plant growth. It describes implications of the ROS level or content, ROS-producing, and ROS-scavenging enzymes based on plant water status, which ultimately affects photosynthetic efficiency and growth of plants.

From a sustainability perspective, organic farming offers an eco-friendly cultivation system that minimizes agrochemicals and producing food with little or no environmental footprint. However, organic agriculture’s biggest drawback is the generally lower and variable yield in contrast to conventional farming. Compatible with organic farming, the selective use of biostimulants can close the apparent yield gap between organic and conventional cultivation systems. A biostimulant is defined as natural microorganisms (bacteria, fungi) or biologically active substances that are able to improve plant growth and yield through several processes. Biostimulants are derived from a range of natural resources including organic materials (composts, seaweeds), manures (earthworms, fish, insects) and extracts derived from microbes, plant, insect or animal origin. The current trend is indicative that a mixture of biostimulants is generally delivering better growth, yield and quality rather than applying biostimulant individually. When used correctly, biostimulants are known to help plants cope with stressful situations like drought, salinity, extreme temperatures and even certain diseases. More research is needed to understand the different biostimulants, key components, and also to adjust the formulations to improve their reliability in the field. Abstract Demand for organically grown food crops is rising substantially annually owing to their contributions to human health. However, organic farm production is still generally lower compared to conventional farming. Nutrient availability, content consistency, uptake, assimilation, and crop responses to various stresses were reported as critical yield-limiting factors in many organic farming systems. In recent years, plant biostimulants (BSs) have gained much interest from researchers and growers, and with the objective of integrating these products to enhance nutrient use efficiency (NUE), crop performance, and delivering better stress resilience in organic-related farming. This review gave an overview of direct and indirect mechanisms of microbial and non-microbial BSs in enhancing plant nutrient uptake, physiological status, productivity, resilience to various stressors, and soil-microbe-plant interactions. BSs offer a promising, innovative and sustainable strategy to supplement and replace agrochemicals in the near future. With greater mechanistic clarity, designing purposeful combinations of microbial and non-microbial BSs that would interact synergistically and deliver desired outcomes in terms of acceptable yield and high-quality products sustainably will be pivotal. Understanding these mechanisms will improve the next generation of novel and well-characterized BSs, combining microbial and non-microbial BSs strategically with specific desired synergistic bio-stimulatory action, to deliver enhanced plant growth, yield, quality, and resilience consistently in organic-related cultivation.

Abstract
Plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) are used as biostimulants to improve the growth and yield as well as the quality of crops. In the present study, nine strains of PGPB and one solid mix consisting of two of them were evaluated on the cultivation of industrial tomato under specific soil and climatic conditions. The results showed that Bacillus licheniformis treatment increased dry weight of the tomato plants by 39%, and the photosynthetic rate was increased by Priestia megaterium 9.9%. The application of Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, Priestia megaterium, and Bacillus licheniformis increased mean fruit weight per plant 26.78–30.70% compared to that of control. Yield per plant was increased 51.94% with the use of Bacillus licheniformis compared to that of control. The quality of the fruits in nearly every bacteria strain was improved. Bacillus pumilus and the mix of Priestia megaterium and Azotobacter chroococcum (1:1) increased the most total soluble solids in the tomato fruits (4.70° Brix), and Priestia megaterium increased content in lycopene and total carotenoids by 52.8% and 25%, respectively; Bacillus pseudomycoides increased Pectin methylesterase (PME) activity (24.94 units/mL), and Bacillusmojavensis, along with the mix of Priestia megaterium and Azotobacter chroococcum, increased Poligalacturonase (PG) activity the most (30.09 and 32.53 units/mL, respectively). Most of the bacteria strains presented an increased antioxidant activity significantly better that that of the control up to 31.25%. The results of this study confirmed that the use of PGPB as biostimulants can improve the yield and the quality of industrial tomato.

Abstract
In this study, the potential regulatory effects of fulvic acid extracted from paper mill effluent (PFA) in apple replant disease (ARD) were investigated through a comprehensive experimental evaluation of the effects of PFA on soil properties, growth inhibition of apple replant pathogens, and growth of replanted Malus hupehensis Rehd. seedlings. PFA with a relatively lower molecular weight was mainly composed of carbohydrates, lignin derivatives, and polysaccharides and was rich in functional groups such as carboxyl and phenolic hydroxyl groups. Treatment with PFA dosages ranging from 2 to 3 g/pot significantly increased available phosphorus (P) in soil by 47.5 to 57.5% when compared with the control without PFA, indicating that PFA had a positive effect in activating P. In addition, PFA stimulated the growth of replanted seedlings by promoting root elongation, enhancing leaf photosynthesis, and increasing the activity of root antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase. However, no convincing evidence was found that application of different dosages of PFA had remarkable effects on soil pH, inorganic nitrogen, available potassium, organic matter, and the numbers of bacteria and fungi. Notably, PFA had no effect on the copy number of the main pathogenic fungi causing ARD, including Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium solani, Fusarium proliferatum, and Fusarium moniliforme. Overall, PFA can alleviate ARD to a certain extent mainly through its effects on improving the resilience of replanted young seedlings rather than by affecting soil microorganisms or providing nutrients.

Abstract
As the world develops and population increases, so too does the demand for higher agricultural output with lower resources. Plant biostimulants appear to be one of the more prominent sustainable solutions, given their natural origin and their potential to substitute conventional methods in agriculture. Classified based on their source rather than constitution, biostimulants such as humic substances (HS), protein hydrolysates (PHs), seaweed extracts (SWE) and microorganisms have a proven potential in improving plant growth, increasing crop production and quality, as well as ameliorating stress effects. However, the multi-molecular nature and varying composition of commercially available biostimulants presents challenges when attempting to elucidate their underlying mechanisms. While most research has focused on the broad effects of biostimulants in crops, recent studies at the molecular level have started to unravel the pathways triggered by certain products at the cellular and gene level. Understanding the molecular influences involved could lead to further refinement of these treatments. This review comprises the most recent findings regarding the use of biostimulants in plants, with particular focus on reports of their molecular influence.

Abstract
The present study investigates the effect of Ulva lactuca extract as seed-priming agent for tomato plants under optimal and salinity stress conditions. The aims of this experiment were to assess the effect of seed priming using Ulva lactuca extract in alleviating the salinity stress tomato plants were subjected to, and to find out the possible mechanism of actions behind such a positive effect via means of fractionation of the crude extract and characterization. Salinity application decreased the plant biomass and altered different physiological traits of tomato. However, the application of Ulva lactuca methanol extract (ME) and its fractions (residual fraction (RF), chloroform fraction (CF), butanol fraction (BF), and hexane fraction (HF)) at 1 mg·mL-1 as seed priming substances attenuated the negative effects of salinity on tomato seedlings. Under salinity stress conditions, RF application increased the tomato fresh weight; while ME, RF, and HF treatments significantly decreased the hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentration and antioxidant activity in tomato plants. The biochemical analyses of Ulva lactuca extract and fractions showed that the RF recorded the highest concentration of glycine betaine, while the ME was the part with the highest concentrations of total phenols and soluble sugars. This suggests that these compounds might play a key role in the mechanism by which seaweed extracts mitigate salinity stress on plants.
