Study of optical absorbance and MR relaxation of Fricke xylenol orange gel dosimeters

A preliminary study of multispectral Cherenkov imaging and a Fricke-xylenol orange gel film (MCIFF) for online, absolute dose measurement

BACKGROUND

Cherenkov luminescence imaging has shown potential for relative dose distribution and field verification in radiation therapy. However, to date, limited research utilizing Cherenkov luminescence for absolute dose calibration has been conducted owing to uncertainties arising from camera positioning and tissue surface optical properties.

PURPOSE

This paper introduces a novel approach to multispectral Cherenkov luminescence imaging combined with Fricke-xylenol orange gel (FXG) film, termed MCIFF, which can enable online full-field absolute dose measurement. By integrating these two approaches, MCIFF allows for calibration of the ratio between two spectral intensities with absorbed dose, thereby enabling absolute dose measurement.

METHODS

All experiments are conducted on a Varian Clinac 23EX, utilizing an electron multiplying charge-coupled device (EMCCD) camera and a two-way image splitter for simultaneous capture of two-spectral Cherenkov imaging. In the first part of this study, the absorbance curves of the prepared FXG film, which receives different doses, are measured using a fluorescence spectrophotometer to verify the correlation between absorbance and dose. In the second part, the FXG film is positioned directly under the radiation beam to corroborate the dose measurement capacity of MCIFF across various beams. In the third part, the feasibility of MCIFF is tested in actual radiotherapy settings via a humanoid model, demonstrating its versatility with various radiotherapy materials.

RESULTS

The results of this study indicate that the logarithmic ratios of spectral intensities at wavelengths of 550 ± 50 and 700 ± 100 nm accurately reflect variations in radiation dose (R2 > 0.96) across different radiation beams, particle energies, and dose rates. The slopes of the fitting lines remain consistent under varying beam conditions, with discrepancies of less than 8%. The optical profiles obtained using the MCIFF exhibit a satisfactory level of agreement with the measured results derived from the treatment planning system (TPS) and EBT3 films. Specifically, for photon beams, the lateral distances between the 80% and 20% isodose lines, referred to as the penumbra (P80-20) values, obtained through TPS, EBT3 films, and MCIFF, are determined as 0.537, 0.664, and 0.848 cm, respectively. Similarly, for electron beams, the P80-20 values obtained through TPS, EBT3 films, and MCIFF are found to be 0.432, 0.561, and 0.634 cm, respectively. Furthermore, imaging of the anthropomorphic phantom demonstrates the practical application of MCIFF in real radiotherapy environments.

CONCLUSION

By combining an FXG film with Cherenkov luminescence imaging, MCIFF can calibrate Cherenkov luminescence to absorbed dose, filling the gap in online 2D absolute dose measurement methods in clinical practice, and providing a new direction for the clinical application of optical imaging to radiation therapy.

Investigation of Colored Film Indicators for the Assessment of the Occasional Radiation Exposure

Occupational radiation exposure monitoring is well-established in clinical or industrial environments with various different dosimeter systems. Despite the availability of many dosimetry methods and devices, a challenge with the occasional exposure registration, which may occur due to the spilling of radioactive materials or splitting of these materials in the environment, still exists, because not every individual will have an appropriate dosimeter at the time of the irradiation event. The aim of this work was to develop radiation-sensitive films—color-changing radiation indicators, which can be attached to or integrated in the textile. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based polymer hydrogels were used as a basis for fabrication of radiation indicator films. Several organic dyes (brilliant carmosine (BC), brilliant scarlet (BS), methylene red (MR), brilliant green (BG), brilliant blue (BB), methylene blue (MB) and xylenol orange (XiO)) were used as a coloring additives. Moreover, PVA films enriched with Ag nanoparticles (PVA-Ag) were investigated. In order to assess the radiation sensitivity of the produced films, experimental samples were irradiated in a linear accelerator with 6 MeV X-ray photons and the radiation sensitivity of irradiated films was evaluated using UV–Vis spectrophotometry method. The most sensitive were PVA-BB films indicating 0.4 Gy−1 sensitivity in low-dose (0–1 or 2 Gy) range. The sensitivity at higher doses was modest. These PVA-dye films were sensitive enough to detect doses up to 10 Gy and PVA-MR film indicated stable 33.3% decolorization after irradiation at this dose. It was found that the dose sensitivity of all PVA-Ag gel films varied from 0.068 to 0.11 Gy−1 and was dependent on the Ag additives concentration. Exchange of a small amount of water with ethanol or isopropanol caused the enhancement of radiation sensitivity in the films with the lowest AgNO3 concentration. Radiation-induced color change of AgPVA films varied between 30 and 40%. Performed research demonstrated the potential of colored hydrogel films in their applications as indicators for the assessment of the occasional radiation exposure.

Impact of Salt on Thermal Stability and Dose Response of the Fricke-XO-Pluronic F-127 3D Radiotherapy Dosimeter

Fricke-XO-Pluronic F-127 has recently been proposed as a 3D dosimeter for radiotherapy. It contains the typical ingredients of the Fricke ionizing radiation dosimeter, which are embedded in a physical gel of poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(propylene oxide)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (Pluronic F-127). The main reactions upon irradiation are the conversion of Fe⁺² to Fe⁺³ and the formation of a colored complex with XO ([XO-Fe]⁺³). The study attempts to optimize the dosimeter in terms of its solution-to-gel transition temperature. In order to lower this temperature, the use of NaCl salt has been proposed. The new composition was characterized in order to obtain information on its thermal performance, storage stability, dose response to irradiation with a medical accelerator emitting different types of radiation, and tissue equivalence. The results obtained show an improvement in the sol-gel transition temperature and dose sensitivity compared to the composition without NaCl and broaden the knowledge of the Fricke-XO-Pluronic F-127.

Study of Ag Nanoparticles in a Polyacrylamide Hydrogel Dosimeters by Optical Technique

The dosimetric characteristics of hydrogel dosimeters based on polyacrylamide (PAC) as a capping agent incorporating silver nitrate as a radiation-sensitive material are investigated using UV-Vis spectrophotometry within the dose range 0–100 Gy. Glycerol was used in the hydrogel matrix to promote the dosimetric response and increase the radiation sensitivity. Upon exposing the PAC hydrogel to γ-ray, it exhibits a Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) band at 453 nm, and its intensity increases linearly with absorbed doses up to 100 Gy. The results are compared with the silver nitrate gel dosimeter. Glycerol of 15% in the hydrogel matrix enhances the radiation sensitivity by about 30%. PAC hydrogel dosimeter can be considered a near water equivalent material in the 400 keV–20 MeV photon energy range. At doses less than 15 Gy, the PAC hydrogel dosimeter retains higher radiation sensitivity than the gel dosimeter. The total uncertainty (2σ) of the dose estimated using this hydrogel is about 4%. These results may support the validity of using this hydrogel as a dosimeter to verify radiotherapy techniques and dose monitoring during blood irradiation.

How Xylenol Orange and Ferrous Ammonium Sulphate Influence the Dosimetric Properties of PVA–GTA Fricke Gel Dosimeters: A Spectrophotometric Study

The development of Fricke gel (FG) dosimeters based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as the gelling agent and glutaraldehyde (GTA) as the cross-linker has enabled significant improvements in the dose response and the stability over time of spatial radiation dose distributions. However, a standard procedure for preparing FG in terms of reagent concentrations is still missing in the literature. This study aims to investigate, by means of spectrophotometric analyses, how the sensitivity to the radiation dose and the range of linearity of the dose–response curve of PVA-GTA-FG dosimeters loaded with xylenol orange sodium salt (XO) are influenced by ferrous ammonium sulphate (FAS) and XO concentrations. Moreover, the effect of different concentrations of such compounds on self-oxidation phenomena in the dosimeters was evaluated. PVA-GTA-FG dosimeters were prepared using XO concentrations in the range 0.04–0.80 mM and FAS in the range 0.05–5.00 mM. The optical absorbance properties and the dose response of FG were investigated in the interval 0.0–42.0 Gy. The results demonstrate that the amount of FAS and XO determines both the sensitivity to the absorbed dose and the interval of linearity of the dose–response curve. The study suggests that the best performances of FG dosimeters for spectrophotometric analyses can be obtained using 1.00–0.40 mM and 0.200–0.166 mM concentrations of FAS and XO, respectively.

Induced Radionuclides and Their Activity Concentration in Gel Dosimeters Irradiated by Carbon Ion Beam

Radioactivity was measured in a micellar gel dosimeter, a polymer gel dosimeter, and water was irradiated by carbon ion beams at various beam energy conditions. Monte Carlo simulation was also performed to estimate the radioactivity. Short-lived positron-emitting nuclides were observed immediately after irradiation, but they decayed rapidly into the background. At 24 h post-irradiation, the dominant measured radioactivity was of ⁷Be. The simulation also showed minor activity of ²⁴Na and ³H; however, they were not experimentally observed. The measured radioactivity was independent of the type of gel dosimeter under all irradiation conditions, suggesting that the radioactivity was induced by the interaction of carbon ions with water (the main component of the gel dosimeters). The ratio between the simulated and measured radioactivity was within 0.9–1.5. The activity concentration of ⁷Be was found to be less than 1/10 of the value derived using the exemption concept proposed by the International Atomic Energy Agency. This result should be applicable to irradiated gel dosimeters containing mainly water and 0–4 wt.% C and 0–1.7 wt.% N.

Dose-response of Fricke- and PAGAT-dosimetry gels in kilovoltage and megavoltage photon beams: Impact of LET on sensitivity

PURPOSE

Dosimetry of ionizing radiation quantifies the energy deposited by an incident beam to the medium. This study presents the relative response of two types of gel dosimeters describing their differences by estimating radiation chemical yields produced in water radiolysis.

METHODS

Two types of gel dosimeter were used, namely an acid ferrous ion solution infused with xylenol orange known as Fricke gel and a polymer gel based on acrylamide and N,N'-methylenebis(acrylamide) known as PAGAT. Samples were irradiated using two photon beam energies, one from a conventional X-ray tube operated at 44 kV and the other one from a LINAC operated at 6 MV. The dosimeters were analyzed by optical absorbance and magnetic resonance imaging. Additionally, the linear energy transfer of each beam was calculated using Monte Carlo simulations for further estimation of the radiation chemical yields produced during water radiolysis.

RESULTS

Obtained results for both gel dosimeters indicate that their response at 44 kV and 6 MV are different, regardless of the read-out technique. On average, the sensitivity at 44 kV was found to be 65 % of the response at 6 MV. The calculated radiation chemical yields are in agreement with the observed experimental results.

CONCLUSIONS

The main reason for the difference in the response of the dosimeters may be related to the linear energy transfer of each photon beam, which varies the production of primary chemical species during water radiolysis.

Polyphenolic extracts from the xerophyte Rhamnus lycioides as a radiation biodosimeter

The majority of dosimeters currently in use are synthetic and very expensive. Therefore, the study of the dosimetric characteristics of polyphenolic extracts of xerophytes is useful because drought stress causes an increase in the production of these cheap and natural compounds containing benzene rings. Here, the polyphenolic compounds were extracted from Rhamnus lycioides which was collected from Bou-Hedma National Park in Tunisia and identified using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). We investigated the impact of cobalt-60 (⁶⁰Co) irradiation (0-30 kilogray (kGy)) on the color parameters of polyphenolic extracts of R. lycioides using the Konica Minolta CR 300 portable colorimeter and UV-Visible spectroscopy. The structural and morphological characteristics of the irradiated extracts were assessed using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Overall, our results suggest that exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) of the polyphenolic components of the xerophyte R. lycioides has produced significant dose-dependent changes in their optical and morphological properties. Thus, these extracts can be valorized as biodosimeters in the dose range from 5 to 25 kGy.

Nuclear magnetic resonance analysis of a chemically cross-linked ferrous-methylthymol blue-polyvinyl alcohol radiochromic gel dosimeter

A new formulation of hydrogel dosimeter consisting of ferrous-methylthymol blue (MTB)-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) cross-linked chemically with glutaraldehyde (GTA) was studied and evaluated by nuclear magnetic resonance analysis by means of the R₂ spin-spin relaxation rate. Previous optical studies of this transparent solid chemically cross-linked gel showed important dosimetric features in terms of sensitivity, auto-oxidation rate, and diffusion. This study shows that the MTB-PVA-GTA dosimeter has a reproducible linear dose response up to 40 Gy. For the optimum formulation of 0.1 mM MTB, 2.5% PVA, and 26.6 mM GTA, the measured R₂ sensitivity was higher than that of traditional natural matrix-containing gels (MTB-gelatin) and all other reported PVA gel-based radiochromic dosimeters with MTB, xylenol orange (XO), or GTA (MTB-PVA, XO-PVA, XO-PVA-GTA). Additionally, the auto-oxidation rate was approximately ten times lower than that of the Fricke-MTB-gelatin system, which is consistent with the spectrophotometry results. The results of the independent experimental spectrophotometry and nuclear magnetic resonance analyses indicate that the transparent cross-linked dosimeter has good and consistent dosimetric features.

Parameter estimation and mathematical modeling of the diffusion process of a benzoic acid infused Fricke gel dosimeter

This work presents a mathematical model implementation for studying the diffusion process of ferric ions in post-irradiated Fricke gel dosimeters. Fricke gel samples were manufactured in layers for their analysis by optical transmission imaging and benzoic acid was incorporated to improve their radiosensitivity. The developed method consists on designing the dosimeters with a suitable composition for their optical analysis which allows accurate measurements in a wide dose range with noticeable linear responses with an average linear correlation coefficient of r²=0.993. The developed algorithm calculates the diffusion coefficient by means of an inverse problem formulation. Moreover, the proposed method is capable of modeling time-dependent physical properties and evolution over time of the irradiated dosimeters accurately and comparable with experimentally measured data. The obtained results evince the complexity of the diffusion phenomena in this type of materials and the capacity of the proposed method to provide a reliable quantification of the diffusion coefficient as a scalar approximation of the diffusion tensor. The obtained diffusion coefficient varies from 1.21 to 1.61 mm²/h with uncertainties lower than 2%. The model is also transferable to other diffusion driven systems and the numerical solving method can also be adapted to solve diffusion calculation based on other theoretical approaches.

Dosimetric and chemical characteristics of Fricke gels based on PVA matrices cross-linked with glutaraldehyde

Fricke gel radiochemical sensors based on various matrices have been studied for decades as 3D dosimeters for radiotherapy. Despite their many appealing features, progressive aging and blurring of the signal have prevented the widespread use of these dosimeters, so far. We have addressed these shortcomings and hereby present our development of a Fricke gel based on a chemically cross-linked PVA matrix. We investigated the influence of several parameters of the polymeric matrix on sensitivity, diffusion coefficient and spontaneous oxidation of the proposed gel dosimeter. Based on these findings, we optimized the gel compositions. Our new gel formulation combines transparency, high sensitivity and simple production method, typical of gels based on natural polymers, with low diffusion coefficient and slow spontaneous oxidation typical of PVA gels made by freezing-thawing.
