Haematological values of post-laying Arrau turtle (Podocnemis expansa) in the Orinoco River, Venezuela

Hematological and genotoxic biomarkers in a natural population of freshwater turtles Trachemys dorbigni (Duméril & Bibron, 1835) (Testudines: Emydidae) living in an urban area in Southern Brazil

The present study aimed to report the morphometric and hematological indices and genotoxicity of a free-life population of D'Orbigny's slider turtles (Trachemys dorbigni) living in an urban area in Southern Brazil. For that, 16 specimens were randomly captured in an urban canal that receives irregular releases of wastewater. Biometrics and external visual changes were analyzed, such as turtle shell deformities, and the presence of parasites. Blood samples were collected to evaluate the hematological profile and the presence of micronuclei and other erythrocyte nuclear abnormalities as potential mutagenic and genotoxic effects. Water physicochemical parameters were also measured. Organisms with ectoparasites (31.25%) and small carapace deformations (56.25%) were observed, but maximum carapace length and weight were considered normal for the species according to the literature. The blood profile indicated low hemoglobin and hematocrit and a high number of total leukocytes, particularly eosinophils which characterize parasitic infections. A frequency of 0.12% for the micronucleus was considered basal, but the frequency of other erythrocyte abnormalities was evident, mainly of blebbed nuclei (63.79%), indicating chromosomal damage in the early stage. The results of this study suggest that natural populations of chelonian inhabiting urbanized areas are impacted by anthropogenic activities in the surrounding environment. Furthermore, it provides comprehensive data which can serve as a comparative model for environmental monitoring studies involving turtles.

Hematological and blood chemistry parameters of a Podocnemis vogli and P. unifilis captive population in Colombia

The Podocnemididae family is seriously affected by anthropogenic factors, which is why almost all of their family members are threatened, according to the IUCN red list. The biology and ecology of these species, as well as the hematological and serum chemistry reference intervals that allow clinical action and decision-making conservation programs, are poorly known. Based on this, the objective of this study was to establish the hematological and blood chemistry parameters of the Savannah side-necked turtle (Podocnemis vogli) and Yellow-spotted river turtle (Podocnemis unifilis) maintained in captivity at the Estación de Biología Tropical Roberto Franco (Villavicencio-Colombia). Forty-nine captive turtles of the species P. vogli (n = 28) and P. unifilis (n = 21) were sampled to determine hematological and serum chemistry parameters. Blood samples were taken from the jugular veins of both male and female turtles across both species. Student's t-test and Mann–Whitney–Wilcoxon tests were used to compare values between the parameters evaluated against genders and sizes. Reference intervals were calculated for the hematological and biochemical values of each species. Some assessed parameters demonstrated significant differences between the males and females of both species. Most of the analyzed parameters exhibited similar reference intervals in both species. In this study, we report values and propose the hematological and serum chemistry reference intervals for P. vogli and P. unifilis, which can be used in the clinical diagnosis of these reptiles and in future research.

Less need for differentiation? Intestinal length of reptiles as compared to mammals

Although relationships between intestinal morphology between trophic groups in reptiles are widely assumed and represent a cornerstone of ecomorphological narratives, few comparative approaches actually tested this hypothesis on a larger scale. We collected data on lengths of intestinal sections of 205 reptile species for which either body mass (BM), snout-vent-length (SVL) or carapax length (CL) was recorded, transforming SVL or CL into BM if the latter was not given, and analyzed scaling patterns with BM and SVL, accounting for phylogeny, comparing three trophic guilds (faunivores, omnivores, herbivores), and comparing with a mammal dataset. Length-BM relationships in reptiles were stronger for the small than the large intestine, suggesting that for the latter, additional factors might be relevant. Adding trophic level did not consistently improve model fit; only when controlling for phylogeny, models indicated a longer large intestine in herbivores, due to a corresponding pattern in lizards. Trophic level effects were highly susceptible to sample sizes, and not considered strong. Models that linked BM to intestine length had better support than models using SVL, due to the deviating body shape of snakes. At comparable BM, reptiles had shorter intestines than mammals. While the latter finding corresponds to findings of lower tissue masses for the digestive tract and other organs in reptiles as well as our understanding of differences in energetic requirements between the classes, they raise the hitherto unanswered question what it is that reptiles of similar BM have more than mammals. A lesser effect of trophic level on intestine lengths in reptiles compared to mammals may stem from lesser selective pressures on differentiation between trophic guilds, related to the generally lower food intake and different movement patterns of reptiles, which may not similarly escalate evolutionary arms races tuned to optimal agility as between mammalian predators and prey.

Biometria e parâmetros hematológicos em tartarugas da Amazônia de um criatório comercial de Rio Branco/AC

RESUMO Com o objetivo de definir os valores biométricos e quantificar parâmetros hematológicos como hematócrito, concentração de proteínas plasmáticas totais e leucócitos totais de tartarugas da espécie Podocnemis expansa, coletou-se um mililitro de sangue da veia femoral de 60 exemplares aparentemente saudáveis. Os animais obtidos do criatório particular, Estância Terra, localizado no estado do Acre, foram classificados em seis grupos de pesos diferentes. Durante a biometria, foram tomadas medidas de peso, comprimento e largura da carapaça e do plastrão, para as análises da correlação dos parâmetros de tamanho e massa corporal entre os indivíduos do mesmo grupo. Os valores observados indicaram que o grupo 06, que inclui os animais com massa acima de 26 kg, apresentou melhor correlação entre as massas individuais de cada animal (r = 0,97) Enquanto que, o grupo 02 (massa entre 21 e 25 kg) apresentou a pior correlação entre as massas (r = 0,34). O resultado da média total de hematócrito de todos os animais deste experimento foi de 10,56%. A concentração das proteínas plasmáticas totais foi de 3,69g dL-1, e a média de leucócitos totais foi de 51466,66µL. Estes parâmetros são considerados fora do padrão quando comparados com os valores encontrados em animais saudáveis da mesma espécie. Assim, este trabalho pode contribuir com informações sobre os dados biométricos e parâmetros hematológicos de P. expansa de cativeiro e demonstra a importância do monitoramento da sanidade dos animais em cativeiro, prevenindo manifestação de enfermidades que poderão pôr em risco a saúde de todo o plantel.

Avaliação de parâmetros bioquímicos séricos em Tartarugas-da-Amazônia (Podocnemis expansa) mantidas em cativeiro

RESUMO: Amostras de sangue de Tartaruga-da-Amazônia mantidas em cativeiro foram analisadas com o propósito de avaliar os constituintes bioquímicos séricos e de relacionar ao que já foi relatado por outros pesquisadores, além de gerar mais informações, tendo em vista a escassez de dados envolvendo a espécie estudada. Foram utilizados 35 animais, com idade entre 3 e 7 meses, os quais foram contidos fisicamente para coleta de sangue em tubo sem anticoagulante. As análises bioquímicas foram processadas através de métodos cinéticos (enzimas) e colorimétricos (demais análises), e os valores médios obtidos foram: cálcio 7,0±1,9mg/dL, fóforo 2,8±1,2mg/dL, ácido úrico 1,8±0,8mg/dL, uréia 10,4±3,9mg/dL, alanina aminotransferase (AST) 75,5±33,6 UI/L, proteína total 1,9±0,8g/dL, triglicerídeos 22,9±9,8mg/dL e colesterol 45,3±19,7mg/dL. Observou-se que os valores dos componentes séricos avaliados assemelham-se aos que foram encontrados por outros pesquisadores em estudos bioquímicos séricos com Podocnemis expansa e outras tartarugas de água doce. Importante ressaltar que, no decorrer deste estudo observou-se a escassez de dados publicados sobre parâmetros sanguíneos de tartarugas do gênero Podocnemis, especialmente a espécie Podocnemis expansa, o que corroborou a alta relevância do desenvolvimento de mais pesquisas que envolvam a questão.
