The extreme solar cosmic ray particle event on 20 January 2005 and its influence on the radiation dose rate at aircraft altitude

Cancer Incidence Among Air Transportation Industry Workers Using the National Cohort Study of Korea

Background: There are increasing concerns regarding increased cancer risks in professional flight attendants due to their exposure to occupational hazards that are known or suspected to be carcinogenic. In this study, we aimed to analyze various cancer risks among a cohort of Korean air transportation industry workers. Methods: We used data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) database from 2002 to 2015. The age-standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) for all types of cancers in the aircraft transport industry workers compared to government employees and the entire employee population were calculated with adjustment for five-year age ranges via the indirect standardized method with gender stratification. Results: Leukemia (ICD-10; C91–C95) showed significantly higher SIRs (95% confidence interval (CI)) compared to the government employee group (1.86, 1.15–2.84) and the whole employee group (1.77, 1.10–2.70). Conclusion: Air transportation industry workers have an increased risk of leukemia compared to other occupational groups.

Short- and Medium-Term Induced Ionization in the Earth Atmosphere by Galactic and Solar Cosmic Rays

The galactic cosmic rays are the main source of ionization in the troposphere of the Earth. Solar energetic particles of MeV energies cause an excess of ionization in the atmosphere, specifically over polar caps. The ionization effect during the major ground level enhancement 69 on January 20, 2005 is studied at various time scales. The estimation of ion rate is based on a recent numerical model for cosmic-ray-induced ionization. The ionization effect in the Earth atmosphere is obtained on the basis of solar proton energy spectra, reconstructed from GOES 11 measurements and subsequent full Monte Carlo simulation of cosmic-ray-induced atmospheric cascade. The evolution of atmospheric cascade is performed with CORSIKA 6.990 code using FLUKA 2011 and QGSJET II hadron interaction models. The atmospheric ion rate is explicitly obtained for various latitudes, namely, 40°N, 60°N and 80°N. The time evolution of obtained ion rates is presented. The short- and medium-term ionization effect is compared with the average effect due to galactic cosmic rays. It is demonstrated that ionization effect is significant only in subpolar and polar atmosphere during the major ground level enhancement of January 20, 2005. It is negative in troposphere at midlatitude, because of the accompanying Forbush effect.

The ground level event 70 on December 13th, 2006 and related effective doses at aviation altitudes

The 70th ground level event in the records of the Neutron Monitor network occurred on 13 December 2006 reaching a maximum count rate increase at the Oulu station of more than 90 % during the 5 min interval 3.05-3.10 UTC. Thereafter, count rates gradually decreased registering increases of a few per cent above the galactic cosmic ray background after a few hours. The primary proton spectrum during the first 6 h after the onset of the event is characterised in this work by fitting the energy and angular distribution by a power law in rigidity and a linear dependence in the pitch angle using a minimisation technique. The results were obtained by analysing the data from 28 Neutron Monitor stations. At very high northern and southern latitudes, the effective dose rates were estimated to reach values of 25-30 microSv h(-1) at atmospheric depth of 200 g cm(-2) during the maximum of the event. The increase in effective dose during north atlantic and polar flights was estimated to be in the order of 20 %.

Overview of research on aircraft crew dosimetry during the last solar cycle

Cosmic radiation was discovered successfully in the beginning of the twentieth century by the Austrian Nobel Price winner Victor Hess. Radiation effects to humans are of major concern during human space missions and also due to the increasing aviation altitudes and flight time. ICRP recommendations lead to adaptations of the Basic Safety Standards by the European Council. Beginning in the 1990 s up to now, significant improvements and findings in aviation dosimetry and epidemiology were done word-wide. Five research projects on measurements and modelling cosmic radiation exposure were supported by European Research Framework Programmes. In-flight measurements with remarkable agreement (+/-25%) were carried out to validate calculation codes for routine dose assessment within +/-30% for galactic cosmic radiation. Measurements and improvements of modelling radiation exposure due to solar particle events (SPE) is still an objective for future research projects.

Investigation of neutron radiation effects on polyclonal antibodies (IgG) and fluorescein dye for astrobiological applications

Detecting life in the Solar System is one of the great challenges of new upcoming space missions. Biochips have been proposed as a way to detect organic matter on extraterrestrial objects. A biochip is a miniaturized device composed of biologically sensitive systems, such as antibodies, which are immobilized on a slide. In the case of in situ measurements, the main concern is to ensure the survival of the antibodies under space radiation. Our recent computing simulation of cosmic ray interactions with the martian environment shows that neutrons are one of the dominant species at soil level. Therefore, we have chosen, in a first approach, to study antibody resistance to neutrons by performing irradiation experiments at the Applications Interdisciplinaires des Faisceaux d'Ions en Région Aquitaine (AIFIRA) platform, a French ion beam facility at the Centre d'Etudes Nucléaires de Bordeaux-Gradignan in Bordeaux. Antibodies and fluorescent dyes, freeze-dried and in buffer solution, were irradiated with 0.6 MeV and 6 MeV neutrons. Sample analyses demonstrated that, in the conditions tested, antibody recognition capability and fluorescence dye intensity are not affected by the neutrons.

Measurements of secondary neutrons from cosmic radiation with a Bonner sphere spectrometer at 79 degrees N

Air crew members and airline passengers are continuously exposed to cosmic radiation during their flights. Particles ejected by the sun during so-called solar particle events (SPEs) in periods of high solar activity can contribute to this exposure. In rare cases the dose from a single SPE might even exceed the annual dose limit of 1 mSv above which dose monitoring of air crews is legally required in Germany. Measurements performed by means of neutron monitors have already shown that the relative intensity of secondary neutrons from cosmic radiation is enhanced during an SPE, particularly at regions close to the magnetic poles of the Earth where shielding of the cosmic radiation by the geomagnetic field is low. Here we describe a Bonner sphere spectrometer installed at the Koldewey station at 79 degrees N, i.e. about 1,000 km from the geographic North pole, which is designed to provide first experimental data on the time-dependent energy spectrum of neutrons produced in the atmosphere during an SPE. This will be important to calculate doses from these neutrons to air crew members. The system is described in detail and first results are shown that were obtained during quiet periods of sun activity.

Monte Carlo simulation of the radiation environment encountered by a biochip during a space mission to Mars

Simulations with a Monte Carlo tool kit have been performed to determine the radiation environment a specific device, called a biochip, would face if it were placed into a rover bound to explore Mars' surface. A biochip is a miniaturized device that can be used to detect organic molecules in situ. Its specific detection part is constituted of proteins whose behavior under cosmic radiation is completely unknown and must be investigated to ensure a good functioning of the device under space conditions. The aim of this study is to define particle species and energy ranges that could be relevant to investigate during experiments on irradiation beam facilities. Several primary particles have been considered for galactic cosmic ray (GCR) and solar energetic particle (SEP) contributions. Ionizing doses accumulated in the biochip and differential fluxes of protons, alphas, neutrons, gammas, and electrons have been established for both the Earth-Mars transit and the journey at Mars' surface. Neutrons and gammas appear as dominant species on martian soil, whereas protons dominate during the interplanetary travel. Depending on solar event occurrence during the mission, an ionizing dose of around a few Grays (1 Gy = 100 rad) is expected.

Health physics and aviation: solar cycle 23 (1996-2008)

We continue our description of the scientific and professional activities that were initiated by the classification of airline flight crewmembers as occupational radiation workers in 1994, specifically looking at the period between 1996 and 2008. During this period, radiation measurement programs were conducted on numerous commercial aircraft flights. Epidemiological studies have looked at the incidence of cancer in pilots and flight attendants, with mixed conclusions. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released revised versions of its CARI software, the computer program designed to evaluate radiation exposures received on user-defined flight plans. Additional dose-evaluation programs have been made available by other entities. In May 2000, member states of the European Union (EU) adopted regulations that apply to the air carriers in all twenty-seven nations requiring education on health risks of in-flight radiation as well as dose assessment for all EU flight crewmembers. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) revised its classification scheme for space weather events including radiation-producing solar storms. In 2005, the FAA created a Solar Particle Alert system to warn aircraft of high radiation levels caused by significant events of this type. There is now an early-warning system for potentially harmful solar particle events. This new system depends on the earlier arrival time of relativistic electrons compared with the heavier particulate radiation.

Validation of modelling the radiation exposure due to solar particle events at aircraft altitudes

Dose assessment procedures for cosmic radiation exposure of aircraft crew have been introduced in most European countries in accordance with the corresponding European directive and national regulations. However, the radiation exposure due to solar particle events is still a matter of scientific research. Here we describe the European research project CONRAD, WP6, Subgroup-B, about the current status of available solar storm measurements and existing models for dose estimation at flight altitudes during solar particle events leading to ground level enhancement (GLE). Three models for the numerical dose estimation during GLEs are discussed. Some of the models agree with limited experimental data reasonably well. Analysis of GLEs during geomagnetically disturbed conditions is still complex and time consuming. Currently available solar particle event models can disagree with each other by an order of magnitude. Further research and verification by on-board measurements is still needed.
