Morphological and stomatal responses of Norway spruce foliage to irradiance within a canopy depending on shoot age

Effect of thinning on anatomical adaptations of Norway spruce needles

Conifers and other trees are constantly adapting to changes in light conditions, water/nutrient supply and temperatures by physiological and morphological modifications of their foliage. However, the relationship between physiological processes and anatomical characteristics of foliage has been little explored in trees. In this study we evaluated needle structure and function in Norway spruce families exposed to different light conditions and transpiration regimes. We compared needle characteristics of sun-exposed and shaded current-year needles in a control plot and a thinned plot with 50% reduction in stand density. Whole-tree transpiration rates remained similar across plots, but increased transpiration of lower branches after thinning implies that sun-exposed needles in the thinned plot were subjected to higher water stress than sun-exposed needles in the control plot. In general, morphological and anatomical needle parameters increased with increasing tree height and light intensity. Needle width, needle cross-section area, needle stele area and needle flatness (the ratio of needle thickness to needle width) differed most between the upper and lower canopy. The parameters that were most sensitive to the altered needle water status of the upper canopy after thinning were needle thickness, needle flatness and percentage of stele area in needle area. These results show that studies comparing needle structure or function between tree species should consider not only tree height and light gradients, but also needle water status. Unaccounted for differences in needle water status may have contributed to the variable relationship between needle structure and irradiance that has been observed among conifers.

Contributions of climate, leaf area index and leaf physiology to variation in gross primary production of six coniferous forests across Europe: a model-based analysis

Gross primary production (GPP) is the primary source of all carbon fluxes in the ecosystem. Understanding variation in this flux is vital to understanding variation in the carbon sink of forest ecosystems, and this would serve as input to forest production models. Using GPP derived from eddy-covariance (EC) measurements, it is now possible to determine the most important factor to scale GPP across sites. We use long-term EC measurements for six coniferous forest stands in Europe, for a total of 25 site-years, located on a gradient between southern France and northern Finland. Eddy-derived GPP varied threefold across the six sites, peak ecosystem leaf area index (LAI) (all-sided) varied from 4 to 22 m(2) m(-2) and mean annual temperature varied from -1 to 13 degrees C. A process-based model operating at a half-hourly time-step was parameterized with available information for each site, and explained 71-96% in variation between daily totals of GPP within site-years and 62% of annual total GPP across site-years. Using the parameterized model, we performed two simulation experiments: weather datasets were interchanged between sites, so that the model was used to predict GPP at some site using data from either a different year or a different site. The resulting bias in GPP prediction was related to several aggregated weather variables and was found to be closely related to the change in the effective temperature sum or mean annual temperature. High R(2)s resulted even when using weather datasets from unrelated sites, providing a cautionary note on the interpretation of R(2) in model comparisons. A second experiment interchanged stand-structure information between sites, and the resulting bias was strongly related to the difference in LAI, or the difference in integrated absorbed light. Across the six sites, variation in mean annual temperature had more effect on simulated GPP than the variation in LAI, but both were important determinants of GPP. A sensitivity analysis of leaf physiology parameters showed that the quantum yield was the most influential parameter on annual GPP, followed by a parameter controlling the seasonality of photosynthesis and photosynthetic capacity. Overall, the results are promising for the development of a parsimonious model of GPP.

Do stomata operate at the same relative opening range along a canopy profile of Betula pendula?

Stomatal density and size were measured along the light gradient of a Betula pendula Roth. canopy in relation to microclimatic conditions. The theoretical stomatal conductance was calculated using stomatal density and dimensions to predict to what degree stomatal conductance is related to anatomical properties and relative stomatal opening. Stomatal density was higher and leaf area smaller in the upper canopy, whereas epidermal cell density did not change significantly along the canopy light gradient, indicating that stomatal initiation is responsible for differences in stomatal density. Stomatal dimensions - the length of guard cell on the dorsal side and the guard cell width - decreased with declining light availability. Maximum measured stomatal conductance and modelled stomatal conductance were higher at the top of the crown. The stomata operate closer to their maximum openness and stomatal morphology is a more important determinant of stomatal conductance in the top leaves than in leaves of lower canopy. As stomata usually limit photosynthesis more in upper than in lower canopy, it was concluded that stomatal morphology can principally be important for photosynthesis limitation in upper canopy.

Increasing risk for negative ozone impacts on vegetation in northern Sweden

Trends were found for increasing surface ozone concentrations during April-September in northern Sweden over the period 1990-2006 as well as for an earlier onset of vegetation growing season. The highest ozone concentrations in northern Sweden occurred in April and the ozone concentrations in April showed a strong increasing trend. A model simulation of ozone flux for Norway spruce indicated that the provisional ozone flux based critical level for forests in Europe is exceeded in northern Sweden. Future climate change would have counteracting effects on the stomatal conductance and needle ozone uptake, mediated on the one hand by direct effect of increasing air temperatures and on the other through increasing water vapour pressure difference between the needles and air. Thus, there is a substantial and increasing risk for negative impacts of ozone on vegetation in northern Sweden, related mainly to increasing ozone concentrations and an earlier onset of the growing season.

The response of leaf morphology to irradiance depends on altitude of origin in Nothofagus cunninghamii

Leaf morphology varies reliably with increasing altitude in many species, and this is generally considered to be related to temperature. Changes in irradiance with elevation may confound any relationships between a morphological character and altitude, particularly if altitude of origin affects the response to irradiance. Here we describe the interaction between irradiance and altitude of origin on leaf morphology of Southern beech, Nothofagus cunninghamii. Cuttings from each of four altitudes were grown in a glasshouse under full sunlight or 50% shade, and leaf morphology was related to irradiance, altitude of origin and accession. There was a significant interaction between irradiance and altitude of origin for leaf length, width, thickness, area, weight, specific leaf area and stomatal density. There was no effect of altitude on leaf length to width ratio or stomatal index, nor was there an interaction between irradiance and altitude of origin for these variables. These results show that the altitude of origin of a plant has an overriding impact on the leaf morphological response to irradiance. This must be considered in climatic reconstructions.

Effects of light availability versus hydraulic constraints on stomatal responses within a crown of silver birch

Responses of leaf conductance (gL) to variation in photosynthetic photon flux density (QP), leaf-to-air vapour pressure difference (VPD), bulk leaf water potential (Psi(x)), and total hydraulic conductance (GT) were examined in silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) with respect to leaf position in the crown. To reduce limitations caused by insufficient water supply or low light availability, experiments were also performed with branchlets cut from two different canopy layers. The intact upper-canopy leaves demonstrated 1.8-2.0 times higher (P<0.001) daily maxima of gL compared with the lower-canopy leaves growing in the shadow of upper branches. In the morning, gL in the shade foliage was primarily constrained by low light availability, in the afternoon, by limited water supply. Leaf conductance decreased when Psi(x) fell below certain values around midday, while the sun foliage experienced greater negative water potentials than the shade foliage. Midday stomatal openness was controlled by leaf water status and temperature, rather than by transpiration rate (E) via the feedforward mechanism. Mean GT was 1.7 times higher (P<0.001) for the upper-canopy foliage compared to that of the lower canopy. At least 34-39% of the total resistance to the water flow from soil up to the shade foliage, and 54% up to the sun foliage, resided in 30-cm distal parts of the branches. Artificial reduction of hydraulic constraints raised Psi(x) and made gL less sensitive to changes in both atmospheric and plant factors. Improved water supply increased gL and E in the lower-canopy foliage, but not in the upper-canopy foliage. The results support the idea that leaves in the lower canopy are hydraulically more constrained than in the upper canopy.
