Abstract
The objective was to determine the postoperative hypersensitivity of two-step Total-etch as compared to one-step Universal adhesives followed by composite restorations on 100 patients by applying Total-etch on one tooth and Universal adhesive on another tooth. The bonds and teeth were randomly selected. Postoperative hypersensitivity was recorded by visual analog scale before, immediately after, and 24 h after the restoration using cold stimulus. The Mann-Whitney test was applied for statistical comparison of postoperative hypersensitivity between the two bonds as well as for any significant difference in genders with each bond. No significant difference was found between postoperative hypersensitivity of the two adhesives before (p-value = 0.57), immediately after (p-value = 0.604), and 24 h after (p-value = 0.728) the restoration. Males showed more hypersensitivity with Total-etch as compared to females before (p-value = 0.037), immediately after (p-value = 0.047), and 24 h after the restoration (p-value = 0.022). No significant difference was found between gender and Universal adhesive at all three stages (p-value > 0.05). The results suggest no significant difference in postoperative hypersensitivity between the two materials when good sample size and proper technique were observed along with the removal of bias like different patients having different pain perceptions and multiple operators having different operating skills. Males showed more hypersensitivity to Total-etch.Trial registration number: Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials. Registry number: ACTRN12622001213730. (Retrospectively registered: 09/09/2022).

Abstract
Objective To compare the effectiveness of cyanoacrylate to other treatments or placebo in the management of dentin hypersensitivity (DH). Materials and Methods The present review was organized based on the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. The search aimed to answer the following question: is cyanoacrylate effective in the treatment of DH when compared to other treatments or placebo? The following databases were used: PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, BVS, Web of Science, Cochrane, Clinicaltrials.gov, Portal Periódicos Capes, Google Scholar, and manual search. The evaluation process started with the information collected from the selected articles according to the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT). Results Two randomized and five nonrandomized clinical trials were analyzed in the qualitative synthesis. The studies presented different cyanoacrylate formulations, different scales for evaluating pain, and different methods for provoking a painful stimulus. Cyanoacrylate-based products reduce DH in shorter follow-up periods and this reduction persisted throughout the study. The results varied according to the methods used to stimulate the pain. Only two articles showed a low risk of bias and a high level of scientific evidence. Conclusion Although there is a limited number of studies in the scientific literature with appropriate methodological quality, the available evidence proves the effectiveness of cyanoacrylate in the treatment of DH. Clinical Relevance. Cyanoacrylate is easy to access, effective, easily applicable, and a low-cost product with satisfactory results.

Abstract
AIM This study sought to determine the prevalence of dentine hypersensitivity (DH) among adults in Turkey. Also, to ascertain the association between DH and both etiological predictors and demographic patient characteristics. MATERIAL METHOD Using a questionnaire and thermal and evaporative tests, 259 women and 209 men in the age range of 18 to 72 were analyzed. Individually, a clinical evaluation of DH signs was conducted. The DMFT index, gingival index, and gingival bleeding were reported for each subject. The gingival recession and tooth wear of sensitive teeth were also evaluated. Pearson Chi-square test was used to compare categorical data. Logistic Regression Analysis was used to examine the risk factors of DH. Data with dependent categorical variables were compared using the McNemar-Browker test. The significance level was p < 0.05. RESULTS The average age of the population was 35.6 years. In the present study, a total of 12,048 teeth were analyzed. 1755 had thermal hypersensitivity (14.57%), while 470 experienced evaporative hypersensitivity (3.9%). The incisors were the teeth most impacted by DH, whereas the molars were the least affected. Exposure to cold air and sweet foods, gingival recession, and the presence of noncarious cervical lesions were all strongly linked to DH (Logistic regression analysis, p < 0.05). The cold stimulus increases sensitivity more than the evaporation stimulus. CONCLUSION Significant risk factors for both thermal and evaporative DH include cold air, consumption of sweet food, presence of noncarious cervical lesions, and gingival recession. More epidemiological research in this area is still required to fully characterize the risk factors and implement the most effective preventive interventions.

Abstract
Bioactive glasses have been recommended for the occlusion of dentinal tubules in treating cervical dentin hypersensitivity. This study evaluates an in vivo model of dentin exposure, and tests the efficacy of bioglass treatments. Thirty male Wistar rats received gingival recession surgery on the upper left first molar. The treatments were applied over the surface of the exposed dentin every 4 days for 28 days. The groups were as follows: Naive; Gingival recession; Cavity varnish; Biosilicate®; Strontium bioglass; and Potassium bioglass. Changes in the dentin-pulp complex, and the presence of substance P, were evaluated through hematoxylin-eosin and immunohistochemical staining. The groups had similar results. Teeth with exposed dentinal tubules in rats showed a typical pattern in the dentin-pulp complex and immunotracing for substance P. The materials did not cause pulp damage. The effects of gingival recession and open dentinal tubules on pulp tissue require further clarification.

Abstract
This paper aimed to assess the influence of adhesive restoration interface on the
diffusion of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), indirect toxicity,
and pro-inflammatory mediators expression by odontoblast-like cells, after
in-office tooth whitening. Dental cavities prepared in bovine enamel/dentin
discs were adhesively restored and subjected or not to hydrolytic degradation
(HD). A whitening gel with 35% H2O2 (WG) was applied for
45 min onto restored and non-restored specimens adapted to artificial pulp
chambers giving rise to the groups: SD- intact discs (control); SD/HP- whitened
intact discs; RT/HP- restored and whitened discs; and RT/HD/HP- restored and
whitened discs subjected to HD. The extracts (culture medium + WG components
diffused through enamel/dentin/restoration interface) were collected and applied
to odontoblast-like MDPC-23 cells. The study evaluated the amount of
H2O2 in the extracts, as well as the cell viability
(CV), cell morphology (CM), and gene expression of inflammatory mediators (TNF-α
and COX-2) by the pulp cells exposed to the extracts (ANOVA and Tukey tests; 5%
significance). All whitened groups presented lower CV than SD (control;
p<0.05). The highest CV reduction and gene expression of TNF-α and COX-2 was
observed in the RT/HD/HP group in comparison with SD/HP and RT/HP (control;
p<0.05). CM alterations occurred in all whitened groups. The intensity of
these cell side effects was directly related with the amount of
H2O2 in the extracts. We concluded that adhesive
restoration of dental cavity increases the H2O2 diffusion
after in-office whitening, enhancing the indirect toxicity of this therapy and
trigger pro-inflammatory overexpression by MDPC-23 cells.

Abstract
Noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs) are a common clinical finding often linked with dentin hypersensitivity (DH). Aim. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of diode laser for the treatment of DH on microleakage of subsequent NCCL restorations. Materials and Methods. Forty-eight extracted human premolars were collected. All teeth received standardized cervical preparation on both the buccal and palatal surfaces and were randomly divided into three groups (n = 16) according to the restorative material used: nanohybrid composite resin (CR), resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI), and conventional glass ionomer (GIC). The prepared cavities on the palatal surfaces were treated by diode laser using SIROlaser Blue (Sirona Dental Systems, Bensheim, Germany) prior to restoration, while preparations on the buccal surfaces were directly restored. After thermocycling, the teeth were immersed in methylene blue dye for microleakage evaluation under 40x magnification at both occlusal and cervical margins. The Kruskal-Wallis test followed by the Bonferroni tests was conducted to determine inter- and intragroup differences (P < 0.05). Results. All restorative materials tested showed some degree of microleakage with no statistically significantly different scores with or without the use of laser desensitization prior to restorative treatment. Group CR showed the least microleakage, followed by group RMGI, while group GIC showed the highest. Cervical margins showed greater microleakage than the occlusal margins where the difference was statistically significant in the RMGI group without laser pretreatment (P = 0.006) and in both groups CR (P = 0.02) and RMGI (P = 0.006) with the laser pretreatment. Conclusion. Application of diode laser for the treatment of DH prior to the restoration of teeth with NCCL did not affect the microleakage of all the restorative materials tested. All the materials showed some degree of microleakage, which was higher in gingival margins compared to occlusal margins. The resin composite shows the least microleakage among all the tested materials.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the efficacy of a cosmetic aluminium lactate/potassium nitrate/hydroxylapatite toothpaste for the reduction of dentine hypersensitivity (DH) pain as compared to a control toothpaste containing potassium nitrate. METHODS The study was a randomised, examiner-blind, two treatment arm, parallel controlled trial in healthy adults with at least 2 sensitive teeth (Schiff >2). At baseline, immediately after treatment and at 7 and 14 days of twice-daily brushing of the test or control toothpaste the sensitivity of 2 test teeth was measured following iced-water (Schiff and VAS) and tactile (Yeaple probe) stimuli, and a whole mouth plaque score was obtained. Participants also completed a whole-mouth VAS and DHEQ15 quality of life questionnaire at baseline, 7 and 14 days. RESULTS Both toothpastes reduced DH in test teeth, but pain reduction in the test group was significantly better at all timepoints and by all measures (p = 0.005, tooth-level VAS immediately after brushing; p < 0.001 all other comparisons). There was a relative risk reduction of Schiff sensitivity of 55 % immediately after brushing which rose to 81 % after 7 and 88.6 % after 14 days (all p < 0.001). There were no differences in plaque, whole mouth VAS or DHEQ15 scores at any time point. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated the efficacy of an aluminium lactate/potassium nitrate/hydroxylapatite toothpaste compared to a potassium nitrate control toothpaste for the prevention of dentine hypersensitivity both immediately and over a 2 week period. This agent appears to have potential for pain alleviation from the common oral pain condition of DH and further research is warranted. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE DH pain, whilst transient in nature, is arresting in magnitude, affecting quality of life. Daily application of efficacious toothpastes can relieve DH pain however, as yet, there is no gold standard treatment. The results of this study support further investigation of an aluminium lactate/potassium nitrate/hydroxylapatite toothpaste for DH management.

Abstract
Objectives To evaluate the in vitro effectiveness of desensitizing agents in reducing dentine permeability. Methods The efficacy of desensitizing agents in reducing dentine permeability by occluding dentine tubules was evaluated using a fluid filtration device that conducts at 100 cmH2O (1.4 psi) pressure, and SEM/EDX analyses were evaluated and compared. Forty-two dentine discs (n = 42) of 1 ± 0.2 mm width were obtained from caries-free permanent human molars. Thirty dentine discs (n = 30) were randomly divided into 3 groups (n = 10): Group 1: 2.7% wt. monopotassium-monohydrogen oxalate (Mp-Mh oxalate), Group 2: RMGI XT VAR, and Group 3: LIQ SiO2. Dentine permeability was measured following treatment application after 10 minutes, storage in artificial saliva after 10 minutes and 7 days, and citric acid challenge for 3 minutes. Data were analysed with a repeated measures ANOVA test. Dentine discs (n = 12) were used for SEM/EDX analyses to acquire data on morphological changes on dentine surface and its mineral content after different stages of treatment. Results Desensitizing agents' application on the demineralized dentine discs exhibited significant reduction of permeability compared to its maximum acid permeability values. Mp-Mh oxalate showed a significant reduction in dentine permeability (p < 0.05) when compared to RMGI XT VAR and LIQ SiO2. On SEM/EDX analysis, all the agents formed mineral precipitates that occluded the dentine tubules. Conclusions 2.7% wt. monopotassium-monohydrogen oxalate was significantly effective in reducing dentine permeability compared to RMGI XT VAR and LIQ SiO2.

Abstract
Objectives To minimize the tooth sensitivity caused by in-office bleaching, many dentists use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and topical desensitizing gels containing potassium nitrate and sodium fluoride. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of these substances on inflammation and the expression of substance P and calcitonin gene-related peptide in pulp nerve fibers. Materials and Methods Seventy-two rats were divided into 6 groups as follows: GI, control; GII, only dental bleaching; GIII, only ibuprofen; GIV, ibuprofen administered 30 minutes before and after the bleaching treatment and every 12 hours until the analysis; GV, only topical application of a desensitizing agent; and GVI, topical application of a desensitizing agent before dental bleaching. Placebo gel was applied to the upper left jaw and the bleaching agent was applied to the upper right jaw in all groups. Subsequently, the groups were divided into 3 subgroups based on the time of analysis: 0, 24, and 48 hours after bleaching (n = 8). The rats were euthanized and the maxillae were processed and evaluated by histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses. The data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by the Dunn test (p < 0.05). Results In the bleaching groups, the inflammatory process and expression of neuropeptides decreased over time. The animals in which a desensitizing agent was applied showed better results within 24 hours. Conclusions The use of a desensitizing agent had positive effects on inflammation and pain-related neuropeptide expression, minimizing the painful effects of dental bleaching treatment.

Abstract
Studying the dermal skeleton in fish is valuable for phylogenetic specification. The current study describes the detailed structure of the plecostomus dermal skeleton, including its morphogenesis and distribution in the skin. The denticles have a crown and a basal part and are embedded in bony depressions, to which they are attached by denticle ligaments. During denticle morphogenesis, denticle papillae formed from denticle precursor cells align in two cellular layers: an outer ameloblast precursor layer and an inner odontoblast precursor layer. The ameloblast precursors and odontoblast precursors differentiate and secrete enamel and dentine, respectively. We used different histochemical techniques, including Crossmon's trichrome staining, Weigert-Van Gieson staining, periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining, combined Alcian blue (AB; pH 2.5)/PAS staining, Weigert-Van Gieson staining, Mallory trichrome staining, and AB staining to distinguish the dentine and denticle ligaments. We used acridine orange to detect lysosome activity during denticle eruption. Transmission electron microscopy was used to detect the denticle ultrastructure, and scanning electron microscopy was used to detect the topographic distributions of different types of dermal tissues in different anatomical regions.

Abstract
Background: Calcium phosphate-based compounds are used to treat dental hypersensitivity (DH). Their long-term clinical behaviour needs further research. This study compared the 24-week effectiveness of Teethmate Desensitizer (TD), a pure tetracalcium phosphate (TTCP) and dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) powder/water, to that of Dentin Desensitizer (DD), and Bite & White ExSense (BWE), both of calcium phosphate crystallites. Methods: A total of 105 subjects were selected. A random table was utilised to form three groups of 35 subjects. DH was evaluated using the evaporative sensitivity, tactile sensitivity tests, and the visual analogue scale (VAS) of pain. Response was recorded before the application of the materials (Pre-1), immediately after (Post-0), at 1 week (Post-1), 4 weeks (Post-2), 12 weeks (Post-3) and 24 weeks (Post-4). The non-parametric distribution was assessed with the Shapiro–Wilk statistical test. Intra-group differences for the six time points were evaluated with the Friedman statistical test and the Kruskal–Wallis test. Results: All the materials decreased DH after 24 weeks in comparison to Pre-1. However, the TTCP/DCPD cement showed the greatest statistical efficiency. Conclusions: The significant decrease of VAS scores produced by TD in the long term suggest the material as the most reliable in the clinical relief of DH.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare a 3.14% potassium oxalate strip and 8% arginine calcium carbonate toothpaste for the reduction of dentine hypersensitivity after 2 and 4 weeks. METHODS This was an examiner-blind, parallel study in 80 healthy adults with dentine hypersensitivity (Schiff score >2) in >1 tooth. After acclimatisation, participants were randomised to the oxalate desensitising strip with fluoride toothpaste or the arginine desensitising toothpaste control which also contained fluoride. Products were applied under supervision of study staff after measuring baseline sensitivity, thereafter the strip or control toothpaste (fingertip application) was applied after 1 and 2 weeks, and teeth brushed twice-daily with the fluoride (test group) or the fluoridated arginine control toothpaste. Sensitivity was assessed following airblast (Schiff and VAS) and tactile stimuli (Yeaple probe) at baseline, 2 and 4 weeks. RESULTS Both groups showed significant reductions from baseline in VAS, Schiff and Yeaple sensitivity scores after 2 and 4 weeks (p < 0.0005). The oxalate group had significantly lower Schiff and higher Yeaple probe scores compared to control after both time points (p < 0.0002 and p < 0.05), but while scores favoured the oxalate group, there were no significant differences in VAS. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated application of a 3.14% potassium oxalate strip combined with toothbrushing with paste was more effective in pain management of dentine hypersensitivity than brushing with arginine toothpaste. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Treatment of sensitive teeth with the oxalate strip reduced dentine hypersensitivity after 2 and 4 weeks to a significantly greater degree than a positive control sensitivity toothpaste demonstrating that oxalate strips are an effective targeted treatment for dentine hypersensitivity sufferers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to identify and compare the self-reported and diagnosed prevalence of dentinal hypersensitivity (DH) in an University population; and to verify accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of DH stimuli tests. MATERIAL AND METHODS Three hundred and eighty patients (67.2% women and 32.8% men) were assessed by questionnaire, clinical exam, tactile and cold water tests. The intensity of DH was assessed using a visual analogue scale, and a calibrated examiner measured the scores using a caliper. The ICC for intra-examiner was 0.990. Scores above 5 mm were considered sensitive teeth. The association between variables was assessed by Chi-square test. ROC curve analysis determined accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of the tests (p < .05). RESULTS The mean age of participants was 24.08 years. 158 (41.7%) volunteers self-reported the presence of DH, while, 88.7% of the participants were clinically diagnosed (p = .023). In total, 8958 teeth were evaluated, of those 3367 (37.6%) were diagnosed sensitive. The most prevalent teeth with DH were incisors and premolars. The accuracy of the tests with cold water and tactile were 99%. The sensitivity and specificity for cold water and tactile tests were 99.9%, 99.7%, 99.1% and 87.6%, respectively. CONCLUSION The self-reported prevalence of DH was significantly lower than that clinically diagnosed. The cold test proved to be a highly accurate stimulus for the diagnosis of DH.

Abstract
Dental pain is a common health problem that negatively impacts the activities of daily living. Dentine hypersensitivity and pulpitis-associated pain are among the most common types of dental pain. Patients with these conditions feel pain upon exposure of the affected tooth to various external stimuli. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying dental pain, especially the transduction of external stimuli to electrical signals in the nerve, remain unclear. Numerous ion channels and receptors localized in the dental primary afferent neurons (DPAs) and odontoblasts have been implicated in the transduction of dental pain, and functional expression of various polymodal transient receptor potential (TRP) channels has been detected in DPAs and odontoblasts. External stimuli-induced dentinal tubular fluid movement can activate TRP channels on DPAs and odontoblasts. The odontoblasts can in turn activate the DPAs by paracrine signaling through ATP and glutamate release. In pulpitis, inflammatory mediators may sensitize the DPAs. They could also induce post-translational modifications of TRP channels, increase trafficking of these channels to nerve terminals, and increase the sensitivity of these channels to stimuli. Additionally, in caries-induced pulpitis, bacterial products can directly activate TRP channels on DPAs. In this review, we provide an overview of the TRP channels expressed in the various tooth structures, and we discuss their involvement in the development of dental pain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE Stimuli from the oral cavity may penetrate through exposed dentinal tubules and evoke inflammatory pulp response. Anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory drugs applied to exposed dentin may infiltrate through the dentinal tubules and cause pulp recovery. This study investigated the dentin permeability of anti-bacterial and anti-inflammation drugs via an in-vitro transwell dentin disc tube model. METHODS Twenty-seven dentin discs prepared from extracted human molars were collected. Nine kinds of drugs were investigated with three dentin discs in each group. These nine drugs included two anti-bacterial drugs (ampicillin sodium and clindamycin phosphate), two corticosteroids (betamethasone sodium phosphate and hydrocortisone sodium succinate), three non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, piroxicam, lysine acetylsalicylate, and diclofenac sodium), and two natural extracts with anti-inflammatory effect (Ginsenoside Rg1 and Hinokitol). The drugs were introduced to the transwell dentin disc tube model and the 4-hour cumulative release of the drug was detected and recorded by UV-visible spectroscopy. RESULTS We found that ampicilin sodium had better dentin permeability than clindamycin phosphate. Betamethasone sodium phosphate revealed better dentin permeability than hydrocortisone sodium succinate. Lysine acetylsalicylate showed the best dentin permeability among the three NSAIDs. Ginsenoside Rg1 had the best dentin permeability among the nine drugs tested. However, Hinokitiol could not penetrate the dentin disc after 4 h. CONCLUSION Regarding the dentin permeability, Ginsenoside Rg1 is the best among the seven anti-inflammatory drugs tested and ampicilin sodium is the better one between the two anti-bacterial drugs tested. Therefore, these two drugs may have high potential for treating exposed dentinal tubule diseases.

Abstract
The effectiveness of remineralizing agents in reducing dentine permeability by tubule occlusion using fluid filtration device functioning at 100 cmH2O (1.4 psi) pressure and SEM/EDX analysis were evaluated and compared. Seventy (n = 70) dentine discs of 1±0.2 mm width were prepared from sound permanent human molars. Fifty (n = 50) dentine discs were randomly divided into 5 groups (n = 10): Group 1: GC Tooth Mousse Plus (Recaldent GC Corporation Tokyo, Japan), Group 2: Clinpro™ White Varnish (3M ESPE, USA), Group 3: Duraphat® Varnish (Pharbil Waltrop GmbH, Germany), Group 4: Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief™ dentifrice (Colgate Palmolive, Thailand), and Group 5: Biodentine™ (Septodont/UK). Dentine permeability was measured after treatment application at 10 minutes, artificial saliva immersion at 7 days, and citric acid challenge for 3 minutes. Data were analyzed by two-way repeated measures ANOVA. Dentine specimens (n = 20) were used for SEM/EDX analyses to obtain qualitative results on dentine morphology and surface deposits. Each treatment agent significantly reduced dentine permeability immediately after treatment application and created precipitates on treated dentine surfaces. All agents increased permeability values after 7 days of artificial saliva immersion except Clinpro White Varnish and Biodentine. Clinpro White Varnish exhibited significant resistance to acid challenge compared to others. Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief dentifrice has a dual mechanism of action in reducing the dentine sensitivity.

Abstract
Background This cross-sectional study aimed to identify the factors associated to the cervical dentin hypersensitivity (DH) in Brazilian adult population. Methods Three hundred and eighty patients (67.2% women and 32.8% men) were assessed by questionnaire and thermal test with ice. Participants marked in a visual analogue scale (VAS) the intensity of pain, and a calibrated examiner (ICC 0.990) measured the scores using a caliper. Pain scores above 0.5 mm were considered sensitive teeth. The DH associated factors were investigated by clinical examination. The association between variables was assessed by Spearman correlation and the Chi-square test. Logistic regression was used to determine the variables that predict DH (p < 0.05). Results The mean age of participants was 24.08 years. In this population, 8958 teeth were evaluated, of those 3037 (33.9%) were diagnosed sensitive. The most prevalent associated factors to DH were abnormal tooth positioning (9.0%), occlusal trauma (6.5%) and gingival recession (5.6%). The erosion predicted significantly the DH on both simple (OR 7.85, p < 0.001) and multiple(OR 4.36, p < 0.001) analysis. Conclusion The exposure of dentinal tubules by erosion is probably the major predictor of dentin hypersensitivity. The healthy tooth is able to protect against DH.

Abstract
The dentine hypersensitivity (DH) is able to impair the oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL). However, there isn't any specific validated questionnaire to be used in Brazil. The objective was to adapt and to validate the English version of the Dentine Hypersensitivity Experience Questionnaire (DHEQ-15) for use in Brazil. DHEQ-15 was cross-culturally adapted into the Brazilian-Portuguese language and then validated in a cross-sectional study with 100 participants recruited at a University clinic. Study sample comprised 2 groups: 100 individuals with DH, and 100 individuals without. The instrument was self-administered twice 7 to 10 days apart. The participants answered a global rating of oral health. The psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of DHEQ-15 were verified through internal consistency (Cronbach's α) and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient - ICC), convergent (Spearman correlation) and discriminant (Mann-Whitney test) validity. The significance threshold was set at p<0.05. Sample comprised 69 men and 131 women, of mean age 30.4y. The Brazilian DHEQ-15 demonstrated very good internal consistency (α = 0.945). Test-retest reliability revealed excellent reproducibility (ICC = 0.959, p < 0.001). There was statistically significant correlation between the scores obtained on all DHEQ-15 domains and the global rating of oral health (p<0.001). Participants with DH scored significantly higher than those without DH (p<0.001). This study provides evidence supporting the cross-cultural validity of the Brazilian version of DHEQ-15 for use in Brazil.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and durability of five different dentin desensitizers (Gluma Desensitizer Powergel, Bifluorid 12, Gluma Self Etch Bond, D/Sense Crystal, Nupro Sensodyne Prophylaxis Paste with Novamin) on tubule occlusion and dentin permeability reduction in vitro. METHOD The quantitative changes in permeability of 100 dentin discs were measured after desensitizer treatments and following post-treatments of 6% citric acid challenge for 1 min or immersion in artificial saliva for 24 hours under hydrostatic pressure generated by a computerised fluid filtration meter. Qualitative SEM analyses were also carried out. RESULTS Dentin permeability decreased after desensitizer application in all groups. Nevertheless, only the difference between 'Gluma Self Etch Bond' and 'Nupro Sensodyne Prophylaxis Paste with Novamin' groups was significantly different (p<0.05). Dentin permeability increased significantly after post-treatments (p<0.05). There was no statistically difference among the citric acid-subgroups (p>0.05). Of all the artificial saliva-subgroups, only the difference between 'D/Sense Crystal' and 'Bifluorid 12' was significantly different (p<0.05). In SEM analysis, morphological changes were detected on the dentin surface and within the tubules following desensitizer treatments and post-treatments. CONCLUSION All the desensitizers significantly reduced dentin permeability by changing the morphology of the dentin surface and/or dentinal tubules. Following post-treatments, there was some reduction in the efficacy of the desensitizers which was represented by the reduction in permeability values. SEM analysis revealed some physical changes in the dentin structure which can partly give an explanation to the reduced efficacy of tested desensitizers.

Abstract
Background/purpose Acidic diet is one major cause of dentine hypersensitivity. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of different tropical fruit juices on dentine permeability and their erosive ability to remove the smear layer in extracted human teeth. Materials and methods Thirty-six noncarious human premolars were used, and the dentine was exposed at the tip of the buccal cusp by cutting a cavity (diameter 3 mm, depth 3 mm). Permeability of the dentine was tested under different conditions: with a smear layer and 5 minutes after the application of freshly squeezed green mango, lime, tamarind, and starfruit juices. The smear layer was created before each treatment by gently cutting the dentine with a diamond bur. In the final treatment, the dentine was etched with 37% phosphoric acid for 30 seconds. The erosive ability of these fruit juices to remove the smear layer was also examined using a scanning electron microscope. Results Results revealed that application of green mango, tamarind, lime, and starfruit juices for 5 minutes significantly increased dentine permeability by 128.2%, 73.4%, 80.6%, and 70.4%, respectively (P < 0.05, Friedman repeated measures analysis of variance on ranks). The corresponding value of 37% phosphoric acid was 125.1%. Scanning electron microscopy data showed that green mango and lime juices had very strong erosive ability to remove the smear layer, similar to 37% phosphoric acid. Conclusion We conclude that tropical fruit juices, especially green mango and lime, increase dentine permeability and have a strong erosive ability to remove the smear layer, which causes dentine hypersensitivity.

Abstract
PURPOSE This review describes the evolution of the use of dental adhesives to form a tight seal of freshly prepared dentin to protect the pulp from bacterial products, during the time between crown preparation and final cementation of full crowns. The evolution of these "immediate dentin sealants" follows the evolution of dental adhesives, in general. That is, they began with multiple-step, etch-and-rinse adhesives, and then switched to the use of simplified adhesives. METHODS Literature was reviewed for evidence that bacteria or bacterial products diffusing across dentin can irritate pulpal tissues before and after smear layer removal. Smear layers can be solubilized by plaque organisms within 7-10 days if they are directly exposed to oral fluids. It is likely that smear layers covered by temporary restorations may last more than 1 month. As long as smear layers remain in place, they can partially seal dentin. Thus, many in vitro studies evaluating the sealing ability of adhesive resins use smear layer-covered dentin as a reference condition. Surprisingly, many adhesives do not seal dentin as well as do smear layers. RESULTS Both in vitro and in vivo studies show that resin- covered dentin allows dentin fluid to cross polymerized resins. The use of simplified single bottle adhesives to seal dentin was a step backwards. Currently, most authorities use either 3-step adhesives such as Scotchbond Multi-Purpose or OptiBond FL or two-step self-etching primer adhesives, such as Clearfil SE, Unifil Bond or AdheSE.
