Functional development of the inferior colliculus (IC) and its relationship with the auditory brainstem response (ABR) in the tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii)

The contribution of inferior colliculus activity to the auditory brainstem response (ABR) in mice

In mice, the auditory brainstem response (ABR) is frequently used to assess hearing status in transgenic hearing models. The diagnostic value of the ABR depends on knowledge about the anatomical sources of its characteristic waves. Here, we studied the contribution of the inferior colliculus (IC) to the click-evoked scalp ABR in mice. We demonstrate a non-invasive correlate of the IC response that can be measured in the scalp ABR as a slow positive wave P₀ with peak latency 7-8 ms when recorded with adequate band-pass filtering. Wave P₀ showed close correspondence in latency, magnitude and shape with the sustained part of evoked spiking activity and local field potentials (LFP) in the central nucleus of the IC. In addition, the onset peaks of the IC response were related temporally to ABR wave V and to some extent to wave IV. This relation was further supported by depth-dependent modulation of the shape of ABR wave IV and V within the IC suggesting generation within or in close vicinity to the IC. In conclusion, the slow ABR wave P₀ in the scalp ABR may represent a complementary non-invasive marker for IC activity in the mouse. Further, the latency of synchronized click-evoked activity in the IC supports the view that IC contributes to ABR wave V, and possibly also to ABR wave IV.

Auditory brainstem responses and auditory thresholds in woodpeckers

Auditory sensitivity in three species of woodpeckers was estimated using the auditory brainstem response (ABR), a measure of the summed electrical activity of auditory neurons. For all species, the ABR waveform showed at least two, and sometimes three prominent peaks occurring within 10 ms of stimulus onset. Also ABR peak amplitude increased and latency decreased as a function of increasing sound pressure levels. Results showed no significant differences in overall auditory abilities between the three species of woodpeckers. The average ABR audiogram showed that woodpeckers have lowest thresholds between 1.5 and 5.7 kHz. The shape of the average woodpecker ABR audiogram was similar to the shape of the ABR-measured audiograms of other small birds at most frequencies, but at the highest frequency data suggest that woodpecker thresholds may be lower than those of domesticated birds, while similar to those of wild birds.

Functional development of the auditory brainstem in the tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii): the superior olivary complex and its relationship with the auditory brainstem response (ABR)

Twenty pouch-young tammar wallabies (Macropus eugenii) were used to determine the generator of the auditory brainstem response (ABR) during development through ABR and focal superior olivary complex (SO) recordings. A click response from the SO in the wallaby was recorded from postnatal day (PND) 112 when the ABR was only a positive-negative deflection. Before PND 120, the SO response did not contribute to the ABR as it occurred outside the ABR time-span. After PND 140, the SO response was correlated with multiple waves of the ABR with its dominant component corresponding to the ABR P3 wave. The latency, threshold, and amplitude of the SO response developed to the adult-like level at PND 140, while the rate-following ability in the SO response reached the adult level at PND 160. Presumably this was due to more complicated mechanisms underlying the auditory adaptation. The adaptation of the SO response was directly proportional to the stimulus rate and intensity as well as developmental status. Developmental comparison between the ABR and the focal responses from four auditory brainstem nuclei indicated that each ABR component may have a dominant contributor from the auditory brainstem, but there was no simple and exclusive association between the ABR component and the auditory brainstem nuclei.

Auditory brainstem responses in adult budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus)

The auditory brainstem response (ABR) was recorded in adult budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) in response to clicks and tones. The typical budgerigar ABR waveform showed two prominent peaks occurring within 4 ms of the stimulus onset. As sound-pressure levels increased, ABR peak latency decreased, and peak amplitude increased for all waves while interwave interval remained relatively constant. While ABR thresholds were about 30 dB higher than behavioral thresholds, the shape of the budgerigar audiogram derived from the ABR closely paralleled that of the behavioral audiogram. Based on the ABR, budgerigars hear best between 1000 and 5700 Hz with best sensitivity at 2860 Hz-the frequency corresponding to the peak frequency in budgerigar vocalizations. The latency of ABR peaks increased and amplitude decreased with increasing repetition rate. This rate-dependent latency increase is greater for wave 2 as indicated by the latency increase in the interwave interval. Generally, changes in the ABR to stimulation intensity, frequency, and repetition rate are comparable to what has been found in other vertebrates.
