Pesticide Residues in French Soils: Occurrence, Risks, and Persistence

From Water to Water: Insight into the Translocation of Pesticides from Plant Rhizosphere Solution to Leaf Guttation and the Associated Ecological Risks

Plant guttation is an important source of water/nutrients for many beneficial insects, while the presence of pesticides in guttation has been considered as a new exposure route for nontarget insects. This study aimed to elucidate how 15 diverse pesticides are translocated from growth media to guttation by maize plants through a hydroponic experiment. All pesticides were effectively translocated from the growth solution to maize guttation and reached a steady state within 5 days. The strong positive correlation (R2 = 0.43-0.84) between the concentrations of pesticides in guttation and in xylem sap demonstrated that xylem sap was a major source of pesticides in guttation. The relationship between the bioaccumulation of pesticides in guttation (BCFguttation) and the chemical Kow was split into two distinct patterns: for pesticides with log Kow > 3, we identified a good negative linear correlation between log BCFguttation and log Kow (R2 = 0.71); however, for pesticides with log Kow < 3, all data fall close to a horizontal line of BCFguttation ≅ 1, indicating that hydrophilic pesticides can easily pass through the plants from rhizosphere solution to leaf guttation and reach saturation status. Besides, after feeding with pesticide-contaminated guttation, the mortality of honeybees was significantly impacted, even at very low levels (e.g., ∑600 μg/L with a mortality of 93%). Our results provide essential information for predicting the contamination of plant guttation with pesticides and associated ecological risks.

Evaluation of the ecological risk of pesticide residues from the European LUCAS Soil monitoring 2018 survey

The 2018 LUCAS (Land Use and Coverage Area frame Survey) Soil Pesticides survey provides a European Union (EU)-scale assessment of 118 pesticide residues in more than 3473 soil sites. This study responds to the policy need to develop risk-based indicators for pesticides in the environment. Two mixture risk indicators are presented for soil based, respectively, on the lowest and the median of available No Observed Effect Concentration (NOECsoil,min and NOECsoil,50) from publicly available toxicity datasets. Two further indicators were developed based on the corresponding equilibrium concentration in the aqueous phase and aquatic toxicity data, which are available as species sensitivity distributions. Pesticides were quantified in 74.5% of the sites. The mixture risk indicator based on the NOECsoil,min exceeds 1 in 14% of the sites and 0.1 in 23%. The insecticides imidacloprid and chlorpyrifos and the fungicide epoxiconazole are the largest contributors to the overall risk. At each site, one or a few substances drive mixture risk. Modes of actions most likely associated with mixture effects include modulation of acetylcholine metabolism (neonicotinoids and organophosphate substances) and sterol biosynthesis inhibition (triazole fungicides). Several pesticides driving the risk have been phased out since 2018. Following LUCAS surveys will determine the effectiveness of substance-specific risk management and the overall progress toward risk reduction targets established by EU and UN policies. Occurrence, distribution and ecological risk assessment of herbicide residues in cropland soils from the Mollisols region of Northeast China

The first systematic and comprehensive investigation of herbicide residues was conducted by identifying their spatial distribution, influencing factors and ecological risk in cropland soils from the Mollisols region covering 109 million hm2 in Northeast China. Fifty-six herbicides were detected with total herbicide concentrations ranging from 1.01 to 1558.13 μg/kg (mean: 227.45). Atrazine, its degradates deethyl atrazine (DEA) and deisopropyl atrazine (DIA), trifluralin and butachlor were the most frequently detected herbicides, while DEA, clomazone, nicosulfuron, fomesafen, and mefenacet exhibited the highest concentrations. Despite being less frequently reported in Chinese soils, fomesafen, nicosulfuron, clomazone, and mefenacet were found widely present. Although most of the compounds posed a minimal or low ecological risk, atrazine, nicosulfuron and DEA exhibited medium to high potential risks. The key factors identified to regulate the fate of herbicides were soil chemical properties, amount of herbicides application, and the crop type. The soybean soils showed highest herbicide residues, while the soil mineral contents likely adsorbed more herbicides. This study provides a valuable large-scale dataset of herbicide residues across the entire Mollisols region of China along with fine-scale characterization of the ecological risks. Mitigation and management measures are needed to reduce the herbicide inputs and residues in the region.

Multi-omics and gut microbiome: Unveiling the pathogenic mechanisms of early-life pesticide exposure

The extensive application of pesticides in agricultural production has raised significant concerns about its impact on human health. Different pesticides, including fungicides, insecticides, and herbicides, cause environmental pollution and health problems for non-target organisms. Infants and young children are so vulnerable to the harmful effects of pesticide exposure that early-life exposure to pesticides deserves focused attention. Recent research lays emphasis on understanding the mechanism between negative health impacts and early-life exposure to various pesticides. Studies have explored the impacts of exposure to these pesticides on model organisms (zebrafish, rats, and mice), as well as the mechanism of negative health effects, based on advanced methodologies like gut microbiota and multi-omics. These methodologies help comprehend the pathogenic mechanisms associated with early-life pesticide exposure. In addition to presenting health problems stemming from early-life exposure to pesticides and their pathogenic mechanisms, this review proposes expectations for future research. These proposals include focusing on identifying biomarkers that indicate early-life pesticide exposure, investigating transgenerational effects, and seeking effective treatments for diseases arising from such exposure. This review emphasizes how to understand the pathogenic mechanisms of early-life pesticide exposure through gut microbiota and multi-omics, as well as the adverse health effects of such exposure.

Occurrence, multiphase partitioning, drivers, and ecological risks of current-use herbicides in a river basin dominated by rice-vegetable rotations in tropical China

Rice-vegetable rotation practices prevail in subtropical and tropical agriculture worldwide, with applications of current-use herbicides (CUHs) vital for nontarget plant control. After application, CUHs migrate to environmental compartments, where the occurrence, fate, and ecological risks have not been well characterized. To further understand the occurrence and multiphase partitioning, as well as to evaluate potential drivers and mixture risks in environmental compartments, we analyzed 11 CUHs in 576 samples from 36 rice-vegetable rotations in Nandu River basin, Hainan, China. Samples included soil, water, suspended particulate matter, and sediment collected during both rice and vegetable planting periods. The CUH concentrations varied across environmental compartments, but with high levels of glyphosate and aminomethylphosphonic acid organophosphorus herbicides (OPHs) frequently detected, accounting for 82.3 % to 99.0 % in environmental compartments. Phenoxy acid (PAA) and chloroacetanilide (ANH) herbicides were detected at lower frequencies. Spatiotemporal variation was significantly different among OPHs, ANHs, and PAAs, with geographic and crop-related patterns most evident for CUHs rather than OPHs. Structural equation model, redundancy, and boosted regression tree analyses indicated environmental compartment properties (pH, organic matter, and Fe/Al oxides), crop type, and wet/dry climate were important drivers of spatiotemporal patterns. Fugacity ratios indicated multiphase partitioning and transport of CUHs differed in rice and vegetable planting periods. A new assessment framework based on species-sensitive distributions and environmental compartment weight index indicated unacceptable risks of CUHs (risk quotient >1 in >50 % of sites), with most risks from OPHs (10.5 % to 98.0 %) and butachlor, acetochlor, and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. Risk hot spots were identified as the soil, the central region, and the vegetable planting period, potentially threatening nontarget organisms (e.g., Lemna minor, Glomus intraradices, and Apis mellifera). This study provides a new risk assessment framework and demonstrates the domination of OPHs in CUH contamination and risks in the tropics, thus helping guide policymakers and stakeholders on herbicide management.

First surveillance of pesticides in soils of the perimeter of Tadla, a Moroccan sugar beet intensive area

With the long-term application of pesticides on sugar beet farms in the irrigated perimeter of Tadla in Morocco for over 50 years, pesticide monitoring is necessary to assess soil health. The objective of our study was to monitor multiple pesticide residues in topsoil samples collected from post-harvest sugar beet fields and verify their migration to deep soil layers. Topsoil and deep soil samples were collected from arbitrarily selected sugar beet fields in the IPT. In this study, a target-screening method was applied. All target pesticides were detected in soil samples, with tefluthrin being the most frequently detected pesticide. The residue with the highest concentration in soil samples was DDE. All the soil samples contained a mixture of pesticide residues, with a maximum of 13 residues per sample. The total pesticide content decreased toward more profound layers of soil, except in one field where it reached a concentration of 348 µg/kg at the deeper soil layer. For pesticides detected at the three soil depths, only tefluthrin concentration increased in the deep soil layer. The results provide comprehensive and precise information on the pesticide residue status in sugar beet soils warning against the multiple risks that this contamination can cause. This study indicates the need of regular monitoring of pesticides over a large area of the perimeter to enable decision-makers to pronounce the impacts of the extension and intensification of sugar beet cultivation at the irrigated perimeter of Tadla.

Impacts of neonicotinoids on biodiversity: a critical review

Neonicotinoids are the most widely used class of insecticides in the world, but they have raised numerous concerns regarding their effects on biodiversity. Thus, the objective of this work was to do a critical review of the contamination of the environment (soil, water, air, biota) by neonicotinoids (acetamiprid, clothianidin, imidacloprid, thiacloprid, thiamethoxam) and of their impacts on terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity. Neonicotinoids are very frequently detected in soils and in freshwater, and they are also found in the air. They have only been recently monitored in coastal and marine environments, but some studies already reported the presence of imidacloprid and thiamethoxam in transitional or semi-enclosed ecosystems (lagoons, bays, and estuaries). The contamination of the environment leads to the exposure and to the contamination of non-target organisms and to negative effects on biodiversity. Direct impacts of neonicotinoids are mainly reported on terrestrial invertebrates (e.g., pollinators, natural enemies, earthworms) and vertebrates (e.g., birds) and on aquatic invertebrates (e.g., arthropods). Impacts on aquatic vertebrate populations and communities, as well as on microorganisms, are less documented. In addition to their toxicity to directly exposed organisms, neonicotinoid induce indirect effects via trophic cascades as demonstrated in several species (terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates). However, more data are needed to reach firmer conclusions and to get a clearer picture of such indirect effects. Finally, we identified specific knowledge gaps that need to be filled to better understand the effects of neonicotinoids on terrestrial, freshwater, and marine organisms, as well as on ecosystem services associated with these biotas.

Effects of glyphosate on earthworms: From fears to facts

Glyphosate is the most widely applied herbicide worldwide, contaminating water, soils, and living organisms. Earthworms are emblematic soil organisms used as indicators of soil quality, but knowledge about the impacts of glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides (GBH) on these key soil organisms is scattered. Here, we examine this knowledge in detail to answer four questions: (1) Which endpoint is the most sensitive when assessing the effects of glyphosate or GBH in earthworms? (2) Which is most toxic to earthworms: glyphosate or GBH? (3) Are glyphosate and GBH harmful to earthworms when used at the recommended application dose? (4) What are the interactions between glyphosate or GBH and other chemicals in earthworms? The results indicate that a weak legislation led to improper assessment of the ecotoxicity of glyphosate during the last renewal in 2017. Our findings also highlighted that negative effects can occur in earthworms at the recommended application rate, although not after only a single application or when considering only the mortality of adult individuals. However, under more realistic conditions, that is, when assessing sensitive endpoints (e.g., reproduction, growth) and using species present in the field, after several applications per year, the negative effects of glyphosate or GBH on earthworms were observed at the subindividual, individual, population, and community levels, as well as on earthworm-mediated functions. Our recommendations are as follows: (i) competent agencies should collect more information on the toxicity of these compounds to earthworms before the next renewal deadline, with emphasis on the use of the updated legislation on the topic, and (ii) scientists should increase research on the effects of these herbicides on soil invertebrate species, with emphasis on earthworms, using guideline tests and obtain data from long-term field testing. Pesticide residues with hazard classifications relevant to non-target species including humans are omnipresent in the environment and farmer residences

Intensive and widespread use of pesticides raises serious environmental and human health concerns. The presence and levels of 209 pesticide residues (active substances and transformation products) in 625 environmental samples (201 soil, 193 crop, 20 outdoor air, 115 indoor dust, 58 surface water, and 38 sediment samples) have been studied. The samples were collected during the 2021 growing season, across 10 study sites, covering the main European crops, and conventional and organic farming systems. We profiled the pesticide residues found in the different matrices using existing hazard classifications towards non-target organisms and humans. Combining monitoring data and hazard information, we developed an indicator for the prioritization of pesticides, which can support policy decisions and sustainable pesticide use transitions. Eighty-six percent of the samples had at least one residue above the respective limit of detection. One hundred residues were found in soil, 112 in water, 99 in sediments, 78 in crops, 76 in outdoor air, and 197 in indoor dust. The number, levels, and profile of residues varied between farming systems. Our results show that non-approved compounds still represent a significant part of environmental cocktails and should be accounted for in monitoring programs and risk assessments. The hazard profiles analysis confirms the dominance of compounds of low-moderate hazard and underscores the high hazard of some approved compounds and recurring "no data available" situations. Overall, our results support the idea that risk should be assessed in a mixture context, taking environmentally relevant mixtures into consideration. We have uncovered uncertainties and data gaps that should be addressed, as well as the policy implications at the EU approval status level. Our newly introduced indicator can help identify research priority areas, and act as a reference for targeted scenarios set forth in the Farm to Fork pesticide reduction goals.
