Fabric-like Electrospun PVAc-Graphene Nanofiber Webs as Wearable and Degradable Piezocapacitive Sensors

Facile Multiple Graded Wrinkle Construction Strategy for Vastly Boosting the Sensing Performance of Ionic Skins

The construction of surface microstructures (e.g., micropyramids and wrinkles) has been proven as the most effective means to boost the sensitivity of ionic skins (I-skins). However, the single-scale micronano patterns constructed by the common fabrication strategy generally lead to a limited pressure-response range. Here, a convenient repeated stretching/coordinating/releasing strategy is developed to controllably construct multiple graded wrinkles on the polyelectrolyte hydrogel-based I-skins for increasing their sensitivity over a broad pressure range. We find that the small wrinkles allow for high sensitivity yet small pressure detection range, while the large wrinkles can reduce structural stiffening to generate large pressure-response range but incur limited sensitivity. The multiple graded wrinkles can combine the merits of both the small and large wrinkles to simultaneously improve the sensitivity and broaden the pressure-response range. In particular, the sensing performance of multiple-wrinkle-based I-skins substantially outperforms the superposition of the sensing performance of different single-wrinkle-based I-skins. As a proof of concept, the triple-wrinkle-based I-skins can provide an extremely high sensitivity of 17,309 kPa-1 and an ultrawide pressure detection range of 0.38 Pa to 372 kPa. The approach and insight contribute to the future development of I-skins with a broader pressure-response range and higher sensitivity.

Flexible temperature-pressure dual sensor based on 3D spiral thermoelectric Bi2Te3 films

Dual-parameter pressure-temperature sensors are widely employed in personal health monitoring and robots to detect external signals. Herein, we develop a flexible composite dual-parameter pressure-temperature sensor based on three-dimensional (3D) spiral thermoelectric Bi2Te3 films. The film has a (000l) texture and good flexibility, exhibiting a maximum Seebeck coefficient of -181 μV K-1 and piezoresistance gauge factor of approximately -9.2. The device demonstrates a record-high temperature-sensing performance with a high sensing sensitivity (-426.4 μV K-1) and rapid response time (~0.95 s), which are better than those observed in most previous studies. In addition, owing to the piezoresistive effect in the Bi2Te3 film, the 3D-spiral deviceexhibits significant pressure-response properties with a pressure-sensing sensitivity of 120 Pa-1. This innovative approach achieves high-performance dual-parameter sensing using one kind of material with high flexibility, providing insight into the design and fabrication of many applications, such as e-skin.

One Novel Hybrid Flexible Piezoresistive/Piezoelectric Double-Mode Sensor Design for Water Leakage Monitoring

Water leakage is a significant issue in infrastructure, such as submarine tunnels, which can lead to major disasters and property losses. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop a water leakage detection sensor with simple preparation process, low cost, and small limitation of applicable location. In this study, a novel hybrid flexible piezoresistive/piezoelectric double-mode sensor with a sandpaper negative microstructure is proposed. A unique dual-path perception structure is designed that can simultaneously and independently detect two signals of water leakage frequency and water leakage volume. The piezoresistive layer is formed by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coated with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), which is molded by sandpaper molding. By sensing the deformation caused by the swelling of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs), the water leakage volume can be detected as low as 0.5 mL. The piezoelectric layer is a polyvinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene copolymer (PVDF-TrFE) film prepared by the spin-coating method, and the water leakage frequency (0.5-4 Hz) is detected by direct contact with water droplets. This work also studied the performance of the double-mode sensor under low temperature and seawater leakage conditions and further verified its reliability in different environments. The design of the new hybrid flexible piezoresistive/piezoelectric double-mode sensor provides a new possibility for water leakage monitoring, such as in submarine tunnels.

Keratin- and VEGF-Incorporated Honey-Based Sponge-Nanofiber Dressing: An Ideal Construct for Wound Healing

To overcome the drawbacks of single-layered wound dressings, bilayer dressings are now introduced as an alternative to achieve effective and long-term treatment. Here, a bilayer dressing composed of electrospun nanofibers in the bottom layer (BL) and a sponge structure as the top layer (TL) is presented. Hydrophilic poly(acrylic acid) (PAAc)-honey (Hny) with interconnected pores of 76.04 μm was prepared as the TL and keratin (Kr), Hny, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were prepared as the BL. VEGF indicates a gradual release over 7 days, promoting angiogenesis, as proven by the chick chorioallantoic membrane assay and in vivo tissue histomorphology observation. Additionally, the fabricated dressing material indicated a satisfactory tensile profile, cytocompatibility for human keratinocyte cells, and the ability to promote cell attachment and migration. The in vivo animal model demonstrated that the full-thickness wound healed faster when it was covered with PAAc-Hny/Hny-Kr-VEGF than in other groups. Additionally, faster blood vessel formation, collagen synthetization, and epidermal layer generation were also confirmed, which have proven efficient healing acceleration in wounds treated with synthesized bilayer dressings. Our findings indicated that the fabricated material can be promising as a functional wound dressing.

Flexible and Stretchable Pressure Sensors: From Basic Principles to State-of-the-Art Applications

Flexible and stretchable electronics have emerged as highly promising technologies for the next generation of electronic devices. These advancements offer numerous advantages, such as flexibility, biocompatibility, bio-integrated circuits, and light weight, enabling new possibilities in diverse applications, including e-textiles, smart lenses, healthcare technologies, smart manufacturing, consumer electronics, and smart wearable devices. In recent years, significant attention has been devoted to flexible and stretchable pressure sensors due to their potential integration with medical and healthcare devices for monitoring human activity and biological signals, such as heartbeat, respiratory rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation, and muscle activity. This review comprehensively covers all aspects of recent developments in flexible and stretchable pressure sensors. It encompasses fundamental principles, force/pressure-sensitive materials, fabrication techniques for low-cost and high-performance pressure sensors, investigations of sensing mechanisms (piezoresistivity, capacitance, piezoelectricity), and state-of-the-art applications.

Flexible Microstructured Capacitive Pressure Sensors Using Laser Engraving and Graphitization from Natural Wood

In recent years, laser engraving has received widespread attention as a convenient, efficient, and programmable method which has enabled high-quality porous graphene to be obtained from various precursors. Laser engraving is often used to fabricate the dielectric layer with a microstructure for capacitive pressure sensors; however, the usual choice of electrodes remains poorly flexible metal electrodes, which greatly limit the overall flexibility of the sensors. In this work, we propose a flexible capacitive pressure sensor made entirely of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and laser-induced graphene (LIG) derived from wood. The capacitive pressure sensor consisted of a flexible LIG/TPU electrode (LTE), an LIG/TPU electrode with a microhole array, and a dielectric layer of TPU with microcone array molded from a laser-engraved hole array on wood, which provided high sensitivity (0.11 kPa^-1), an ultrawide pressure detection range (20 Pa to 1.4 MPa), a fast response (~300 ms), and good stability (>4000 cycles, at 0-35 kPa). We believe that our research makes a significant contribution to the literature, because the easy availability of the materials derived from wood and the overall consistent flexibility meet the requirements of flexible electronic devices.
