Abstract
When a molar excess of benzene is mixed with an ionic liquid (IL), liquid-liquid phase separation may appear with a pure liquid phase almost composed of only benzene molecules separated from a liquid clathrate phase with benzene molecules dissolved in the IL. Our previous study (J. Phys. Chem. B, 124, 7929, 2020) on long-chain IL/benzene systems has concluded that benzene molecules, as planar nonpolar ones, majorly dissolve in the IL nonpolar domains consisting of cationic alkyl side chains. Nevertheless, the above mechanism is inadequate for explaining the experimental observations that benzene can also dissolve in IL systems with very short alkyl side chains. In this study, by molecular dynamics simulation of the [EMIm+][X-]/benzene mixtures with X- being Cl-, NO3-, PF6-, or Tf2N-, we still observe liquid-liquid phase separation of the pure benzene phase from a liquid clathrate (mixed IL/benzene) phase where benzene molecules are almost equally distributed near imidazolium rings through π-stacking or near alkyl side chains. The anion species strongly influences the solubility of benzene and the ratio of the two liquid phases via the alteration of anionic charge density, which tunes the strength of the electrostatic interaction among ions and thus the probability of benzene molecules interacting with both imidazolium rings and alkyl side chains: a larger anionic charge density corresponds to a lower solubility of benzene.

Abstract
In order to determine the self-diffusion coefficients D of all the species in the solutions at 298.2 K, 1H and 19F NMR diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) has been conducted on coumarin 153 (C153) in binary mixed solvents of an imidazolium-based ionic liquid (IL), 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide (C12mimTFSA), with three molecular liquids (MLs) of chloroform (CL), benzene (BZ), and propylene carbonate (PC) as a function of ML mole fraction xML. Below xML ≈ 0.8, the D values of each species do not significantly depend on the MLs. However, above this mole fraction, the diffusion of C153 becomes smoother in the order of BZ ≈ CL > PC systems. The interactions among C153, C12mim+, TFSA-, and ML molecules have been investigated using infrared (IR) and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopic techniques. The relations of the diffusion of the species with the interactions among them have been discussed on the molecular scale. In the IL solution, the C153 carbonyl oxygen atom is hydrogen-bonded with the imidazolium ring C2-H atom of C12mim+. C12mim+ also forms an ion pair with TFSA-. Thus, C153, C12mim+, and TFSA- cooperatively move in the CL and BZ solutions at a lower ML content, xML < ∼0.8. On the other hand, at a higher ML content, xML > ∼0.8, the C153 molecule diffuses with CL and BZ molecules because of the hydrogen bonding between the C153 carbonyl O atom and the CL H atom and the π-π interaction between the C153 and BZ ring planes, respectively. For the PC system, the change in the relative self-diffusion coefficients of each species with increasing xML differs from those for the CL and BZ systems because of both hydrogen bonding donor H and acceptor O atoms of PC for C153, the IL cation and anion, and PC themselves.

Abstract
Gelatin is a popular biopolymer for biomedical applications due to its harmless impact with a negligible inflammatory response in the host organism. Gelatin interacts with soluble molecules in aqueous media as ionic counterparts such as ionic liquids (ILs) to be used as cosolvents to generate the so-called Ionogels. The perfluorinated IL (FIL), 1-ethyl-3-methylpyridinium perfluorobutanesulfonate, has been selected as co-hydrosolvent for fish gelatin due to its low cytotoxicity and hydrophobicity aprotic polar structure to improve the drug aqueous solubility. A series of FIL/water emulsions with different FIL content and their corresponding shark gelatin/FIL Ionogel has been designed to enhance the drug solubility whilst retaining the mechanical structure and their nanostructure was probed by simultaneous SAXS/WAXS, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, DSC and rheological experiments. Likewise, the FIL assisted the solubility of the antitumoural Doxorubicin whilst retaining the performing mechanical properties of the drug delivery system network for the drug storage as well as the local administration by a syringe. In addition, the different controlled release mechanisms of two different antitumoral such as Doxorubicin and Mithramycin from two different Ionogels formulations were compared to previous gelatin hydrogels which proved the key structure correlation required to attain specific therapeutic dosages.

Abstract
The mixing states of two imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) with different anions, 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (C8mimBF4) and bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide (C8mimTFSA), with three molecular liquids (MLs), methanol (MeOH), acetonitrile (AN), and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), have been investigated on both mesoscopic and microscopic scales using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), infrared (IR), and 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Additionally, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been conducted on the six combinations of ILs and MLs to observe the states of their mixtures on the atomic level. The SANS profiles of the IL-ML mixtures suggested that MeOH molecules only form clusters in both C8mimBF4 and C8mimTFSA, whereas AN and DMSO were homogeneously mixed with ILs on the SANS scale. MeOH clusters are more enhanced in BF4--IL than TFSA--IL. The microscopic interactions among IL cations, anions, and MLs should contribute to the mesoscopic mixing states of the IL-ML mixtures. In fact, the IL cation-anion, cation-ML, anion-ML, and ML-ML interactions observed by IR, NMR, and MD simulations clarified the reasons for the mixing states of the IL-ML binary solutions observed by the SANS experiments. In neat ILs, the imidazolium ring of the IL cation more strongly interacts with BF4- than TFSA- due to the higher charge density of the former. The interaction of anions with the imidazolium ring is more easily loosened on adding MLs to ILs in the order of DMSO > MeOH > AN. It does not significantly depend on the anions. However, the replacement of the anion on the imidazolium ring by an ML depends on the anions; the replacement is more proceeded in the order of MeOH > DMSO > AN in BF4--IL, while DMSO > MeOH > AN in TFSA--IL. On the other hand, the solvation of both anions by MLs is stronger in the order of MeOH > DMSO ≈ AN. Despite the stronger interactions of MeOH with both cations and anions, MeOH molecules are heterogeneously mixed with both ILs to form clusters in the mixtures. Therefore, the self-hydrogen bonding among MeOH molecules most markedly governs the mixing state of the binary solutions among the abovementioned interactions.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are a special category of molten salts solely composed of ions with varied molecular symmetry and charge delocalization. The versatility in combining varied cation-anion moieties and in functionalizing ions with different atoms and molecular groups contributes to their peculiar interactions ranging from weak isotropic associations to strong, specific, and anisotropic forces. A delicate interplay among intra- and intermolecular interactions facilitates the formation of heterogeneous microstructures and liquid morphologies, which further contributes to their striking dynamical properties. Microstructural and dynamical heterogeneities of ILs lead to their multifaceted properties described by an inherent designer feature, which makes ILs important candidates for novel solvents, electrolytes, and functional materials in academia and industrial applications. Due to a massive number of combinations of ion pairs with ion species having distinct molecular structures and IL mixtures containing varied molecular solvents, a comprehensive understanding of their hierarchical structural and dynamical quantities is of great significance for a rational selection of ILs with appropriate properties and thereafter advancing their macroscopic functionalities in applications. In this review, we comprehensively trace recent advances in understanding delicate interplay of strong and weak interactions that underpin their complex phase behaviors with a particular emphasis on understanding heterogeneous microstructures and dynamics of ILs in bulk liquids, in mixtures with cosolvents, and in interfacial regions.

Abstract
The mixing states of an imidazolium-based ionic liquid (IL), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([C4mim][TFSI]), with cycloethers, tetrahydrofuran (THF), 1,4-dioxane (1,4-DIO), and 1,3-dioxane (1,3-DIO), have been clarified on the meso- and microscopic scales using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), IR, and NMR experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. SANS profiles of [C4mim][TFSI]-THF-d8 and -1,4-DIO-d8 solutions at various mole fractions xML of molecular liquid (ML) have shown that [C4mim][TFSI] is heterogeneously mixed with THF and 1,4-DIO on the mesoscopic scale, to a high extent in the case of the latter solution. In fact, [C4mim][TFSI] and 1,4-DIO are not miscible with each other above the 1,4-DIO mole fraction x1,4-DIO of 0.903, whereas the IL can be mixed with THF over the entire range of THF mole fraction xTHF. The results of IR and 1H and 13C NMR measurements and MD simulations showed that cycloether molecules are more strongly hydrogen-bonded with the imidazolium ring H atoms in the order of THF > 1,3-DIO > 1,4-DIO. Although 1,4-DIO and 1,3-DIO molecules are structural isomers, our results point out that 1,4-DIO cannot be strongly hydrogen-bonded with the ring H atoms. The solvation of [TFSI]- by cycloethers through the dipole-dipole interaction promotes hydrogen bonding between the ring H atoms and cycloethers. Thus, 1,4-DIO with the lowest dipole moment cannot easily eliminate [TFSI]- from the imidazolium ring. This results in the weakest hydrogen bonds of 1,4-DIO with the ring H atoms. 2D-NMR of 1H{1H} rotating-frame nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (ROESY) showed the interaction of the three cycloethers with the butyl group of [C4mim]+. 1,4-DIO mainly interacts with the butyl group by the dispersion force, whereas THF interacts with the IL by both hydrogen bonding and dispersion force. This leads to the higher heterogeneity of the 1,4-DIO solutions compared to the THF solutions.

Abstract
Polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) with high volume fractions of ionic liquids (IL) and high modulus show promise for enabling next-generation gas separations, and electrochemical energy storage and conversion applications. Herein, we present a conductive polymer-IL composite based on a sulfonated all-aromatic polyamide (sulfo-aramid, PBDT) and a model IL, which we term a PBDT-IL composite. The polymer forms glassy and high-aspect-ratio hierarchical nanofibrils, which enable fabrication of PEMs with both high volume fractions of IL and high elastic modulus. We report direct evidence for nanofibrillar networks that serve as matrices for dispersed ILs using atomic force microscopy and small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering. These supramolecular nanofibrils form through myriad noncovalent interactions to produce a physically cross-linked glassy network, which boasts the best combination of room-temperature modulus (0.1-2 GPa) and ionic conductivity (8-4 mS cm-1) of any polymer-IL electrolyte reported to date. The ultrahigh thermomechanical properties of our PBDT-IL composites provide high moduli (∼1 GPa) at temperatures up to 200 °C, enabling a wide device operation window with stable mechanical properties. Together, the high-performance nature of sulfo-aramids in concert with the inherent properties of ILs imparts PBDT-IL composites with nonflammability and thermal stability up to 350 °C. Thus, nanofibrillar ionic networks based on sulfo-aramids and ILs represent a new design paradigm affording PEMs with exceptionally high moduli at exceedingly low polymer concentrations. This new design strategy will drive the development of new high-performance conductive membranes that can be used for the design of gas separation membranes and in electrochemical applications, such as fuel cells and Li-metal batteries.

Interactions of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium cation ([C4mim]+) with bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide anion ([TFSA]-) and diethyleneglycol dimethyl ether (diglyme) in mixtures of [C4mim][TFSA] ionic liquid and diglyme have been investigated using 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results of NMR chemical shift measurements and MD simulations showed that the diglyme oxygen atoms have contact with the imidazolium hydrogen atoms of [C4mim]+ in the mixtures. The contact between the hydrogen atoms of imidazolium and the oxygen atoms of [TFSA]- remains even when the diglyme mole fraction (xdiglyme) increases up to 0.9. However, the coordination numbers of the hydrogen atoms of [C4mim]+ with oxygen atoms of diglyme increase with xdiglyme. The [TFSA]- anions around [C4mim]+ are not completely replaced by diglyme even at xdiglyme > 0.9. The MD simulations revealed that the diglymes also have contact with the butyl group of [C4mim]+. The methyl groups of diglyme prefer to have contact with the terminal methyl group of the butyl group, whereas the diglyme oxygen atoms prefer to have contact with the methylene group connected to the imidazolium ring of [C4mim]+.

Abstract
Vibrational spectroscopy has continued use as a powerful tool to characterize ionic liquids since the literature on room temperature molten salts experienced the rapid increase in number of publications in the 1990's. In the past years, infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopies have provided insights on ionic interactions and the resulting liquid structure in ionic liquids. A large body of information is now available concerning vibrational spectra of ionic liquids made of many different combinations of anions and cations, but reviews on this literature are scarce. This review is an attempt at filling this gap. Some basic care needed while recording IR or Raman spectra of ionic liquids is explained. We have reviewed the conceptual basis of theoretical frameworks which have been used to interpret vibrational spectra of ionic liquids, helping the reader to distinguish the scope of application of different methods of calculation. Vibrational frequencies observed in IR and Raman spectra of ionic liquids based on different anions and cations are discussed and eventual disagreements between different sources are critically reviewed. The aim is that the reader can use this information while assigning vibrational spectra of an ionic liquid containing another particular combination of anions and cations. Different applications of IR and Raman spectroscopies are given for both pure ionic liquids and solutions. Further issues addressed in this review are the intermolecular vibrations that are more directly probed by the low-frequency range of IR and Raman spectra and the applications of vibrational spectroscopy in studying phase transitions of ionic liquids.

Abstract
The influence of the polar, aprotic solvent propylene carbonate on the interfacial structure of the ionic liquid (IL) 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate on sapphire was investigated by high-energy x-ray reflectivity. Experiments at solvent concentrations between 17 mol. % and 83 mol. % bridge the gap between diluted electrolytes described by the classical Gouy-Chapman theory and pure ionic liquids. Analysis of our experimental data revealed interfacial profiles comprised of alternating anion and cation enriched regions decaying gradually into the bulk liquid. With increasing solvent concentration, we observed a decrease in correlation length of the interfacial layering structure. At high ion concentrations, solvent molecules were found to accumulate laterally within the layers. By separating like-charged ions, they reduce their Coulomb repulsion. The results are compared with the bulk structure of IL/solvent blends probed by x-ray scattering and predictions from fundamental fluid theory.

A new way to interpret perturbation-correlation moving-window two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy: probing the dynamic interaction of ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate to absorb atmospheric water. Abstract
A rule to interpret perturbation-correlation moving-window two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (PCMW2D) was developed. Compared with Morita's rule, this proposed rule retains the ability to obtain interval features (i.e., monotonicity, concavity, and convexity) and adds the function to quickly and accurately determine both tipping points (i.e., local extrema and inflection points). It could be described as follows: the local extrema and inflection point could be determined by the zero point with an opposite sign on its left and right side in ΠΦ (synchronous PCMW2D) and ΠΨ (asynchronous PCMW2D), respectively. Specifically, a negative left (right) side and a positive right (left) side of point indicates a local minimal (maximal) value. By using the rule to interpret ΠIR (PCMW2D infrared spectroscopy) of 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium acetate [EMIM][Ac]-atmospheric water (H2O) as a function of time, we found that the atmospheric water was absorbed only into the bulk of [EMIM][Ac] before 150 min by hydrogen-bonding interaction, only onto the surface of [EMIM][Ac] after 330 min by van der Waals force, and both to the bulk and surface of [EMIM][Ac] between 150 and 330 min by hydrogen-boding and van der Waals force simultaneously. The proportion of bulk water sorption and surface water sorption to [EMIM][Ac] was about 4 and 96%, respectively.

Abstract
The dynamic process of the atmospheric water absorbed in acetate-based ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium acetate ([BMIM][Ac]) within 360 min could be described with three steps by using two-dimensional correlation infrared (IR) spectroscopy technique. In Step 1 (0-120 min), only bulk sorption via hydrogen bonding interaction occurs. In Step 2 (120-320 min), bulk and surface sorption takes place simultaneously via both hydrogen bonding interaction and van der Waals force. In Step 3, from 320 min to steady state, only surface sorption via van der Waals force occurs. Specifically, Step 2 could be divided into three substeps. Most bulk sorption with little surface sorption takes place in Step 2a (120-180 min), comparative bulk and surface sorption happens in Step 2b (180-260 min), and most surface sorption while little bulk sorption occurs in Step 2c (260-320 min). Interestingly, atmospheric water is found for the first time to be able to be used as a probe to detect the chemical structure of [BMIM][Ac]. Results show that one anion is surrounded by three C4,5H molecules and two anions are surrounded by five C2H molecules via hydrogen bonds, which are very susceptible to moisture water especially for the former one. The remaining five anions form a multimer (equilibrating with one dimer and one trimer) via a strong hydrogen bonding interaction, which is not easily affected by the introduction of atmospheric water. The alkyl of the [BMIM][Ac] cation aggregates to some extent by van der Walls force, which is moderately susceptible to the water attack. Furthermore, the proportion of bulk sorption vs surface sorption is quantified as about 70% and 30% within 320 min, 63% and 37% within 360 min, and 11% and 89% until steady-state, respectively.

Abstract
In this work, the interactions between a representative imidazolium-based ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([BMIM][BF4]) and acetonitrile (CH3CN) were investigated in detail using attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR), hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance ((1)H NMR), and density functional theory calculations. The main conclusions are: (1) a number of species in the [BMIM][BF4]-CH3CN mixtures were identified with the help of excess infrared spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. The dilution process of the ionic liquid by acetonitrile was found to be the transformation from ion clusters to ion pairs. (2) The solvent molecules cannot break apart the strong Coulombic interaction between [BMIM](+) and [BF4](-) but can break apart the ion cluster into an ion pair within the concentration range investigated. The strength of hydrogen bonds between the C-Hs of [BMIM](+) and the N of acetonitrile is enhanced during the dilution process. (3) The methyl group of CH3CN locates above/below the imidazolium ring in the solution. These in-depth studies on the properties of the ionic liquid-acetonitrile mixed solvents may shed light on exploring their applications as reaction media in electrochemistry and chemical synthesis.

Abstract
Room temperature ionic liquids (ILs) are effective matrices in secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and matrix assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI). In this paper, we examine the role of proton transfer in the mechanism of secondary ion enhancement using IL matrices in SIMS. We employ hydrogenated and deuterated 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC) as analytes to investigate the origin of proton transfer. The data indicate that protons from the IL anion transfer to the analyte in solution leading to an increase in the secondary ion intensity of the protonated molecular ion. The chemical identity of the matrix cation also affects analyte signal intensities. Using deuterated DPPC we observe that protons (deuterium) from the DPPC tail group react with the cation of the IL liquid leading to an increase in (cation + D)(+) ion intensities. Further, the data suggest that the transfer kinetics of deuterium (hydrogen) is correlated with the secondary ion enhancements observed. The highest secondary ion enhancements are observed for the least sterically hindered cation. Neither the proton affinity nor the pKa of the IL cation have a large effect on the analyte ion intensities, suggesting that steric factors are important in determining the efficacy of IL matrices for a given analyte.
