Symmetry collapse due to the presence of multiple local aromaticity in Ge244

[GeRu6(CO)18HI]: A Germanium-Centered Ruthenium Carbonyl Cluster with Aromatic Ring Current

The carbonyl cluster compound [GeRu6(CO)18HI] is unique in regard to its structure and bonding with a GeRu6 cluster core, a planar GeRu4HI unit, extensive multi-center bonding, and an aromatic ring current similar to benzene (9-10 nA T-1). The open-shell cluster core is a Ge-centered five-membered Ru4(Ru2) ring with CO ligands and an additional H and I atom, each bridging two Ru atoms on opposite sides of the cluster core. The compound is prepared at 130 °C in a weakly-coordinating ionic liquid.

Dielectric Behavior and Prolate Growth Patterns of Silicon Clusters SiN with N = 12-30 by Cryogenic Electric Beam Deflection

We present a comprehensive investigation of the dielectric behavior and geometric structures of cold neutral SiN clusters of intermediate size with N = 12-30 atoms. For this, cryogenic electric beam deflection experiments were carried out for the first time for Si clusters at nozzle temperatures below 30 K. In combination with quantum chemical calculations based on density functional theory and classical trajectory simulations of the rotational dynamics in the electric field, the geometric structures of the clusters are discriminated. Clusters with N < 15 favor a single-capped square antiprism as a nucleus for cluster growth, forming compact geometries in the molecular beam. Starting with 15 atoms, a prolate-like growth is observed. The prolate structures are based on stable building blocks which reappear for numerous sizes throughout the cluster growth. Finally, the transition from prolate to quasi-spherical shapes is shown to take place around Si29/Si30 as predicted theoretically by the literature. The influence of the exchange-correlation functional on the predicted structure and dielectric properties is discussed in detail for some clusters. Relaxation of the electric-dipole moment and therefore quenching of the observed electric response due to vibrational excitation and collisions with the background gas are also considered, which explains deviations between experiment and theory.

Ligand-free supermolecules: [Pd2@Ge18]4- and [Pd2@Sn18]4- as multiple-bonded Zintl-ion clusters based on Pd@Ge9 and Pd@Sn9 assembled units

Understanding intercluster bonding interactions is important in the rational synthesis of building blocks for molecular materials. Such characteristics have been developed for coinage metal clusters resembling single-, double-, and triple-bonded species, coined as supermolecules. Herein, we extend such an approach for understanding main-group clusters, thus evaluating [Pd2@E18]4- clusters (E = Ge, Sn) involving the fusion of parent spherical aromatic [Pd@E12]2- building units. Our results indicate intercluster bonding provided by contribution from 2P and 1G shells centered at each building motif, leading to an overall bond order of 2.70 and 2.31 for [Pd2@Ge18]4- and [Pd2@Sn18]4-, respectively. In addition, 119Sn-NMR patterns were evaluated to complement the experimental characterization of a single peak owing to the insolution fluxional behavior of [Pd2@Sn18]4- as three peaks owing to the three sets of unique Sn atoms within the structure. Magnetic response properties revealed that spherical aromatic characteristics from parent [Pd@E12]2- building units are retained in the overall [Pd2@E18]4- oblate cluster as two spherical aromatic units. Hence, the notion of superatomic molecules is extended to Zintl-ion clusters, favoring further rationalization for the fabrication of cluster-assembled solids.

Unexpected structural preference with metallophilic Ag-Au contacts in silver(I)-N-heterocyclic carbene cluster; experimental and theoretical approach

A novel synthetic donor-atom-selective approach has been adopted for the synthesis of a heterobimetallic cluster of a new NCN-pincer, 1,3-bis-(1-methyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl-methyl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium hexafluorophosphate (1·HPF6). The complex [Ag3(1)3][PF6]3 (2) has been prepared via the Ag2O route; which undergoes transmetallation to yield a cluster that seems to be the first example of the heterobimetallic trinuclear system [Au-Ag2(1)2Cl][PF6]2, 3. Finally, the trinuclear cluster geometries of 2 and 3 were confirmed via SCXRD studies. Interestingly, Au(I) binds preferentially with soft donor Ccarbene, which transmetallated from the cluster of 2. In both the cyclic trinuclear clusters, the M-M interactions were further inspected using gauge independent atomic orbital (GIAO) computations. Both 2 and 3 are luminescent and possess σ-aromaticity; the NICS values indicate that 3 is more aromatic than 2.

Anion Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Theoretical Studies of Ge3n+1O (n = 1-3) Clusters with the C3v Symmetric Ge3 Structural Unit

We investigate Ge3n+1O-/0 (n = 1-3) clusters using anion photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. The results show that the lowest energy structure of Ge4O- is a bent Cs symmetric trigonal bipyramidal structure, while Ge4O has a C3v symmetric trigonal bipyramidal structure. Ge7O- has two coexisting low-lying isomers, the first one can be viewed as a Ge2O unit interacting with a Ge5 trigonal bipyramid, the second one can be regarded as an O atom interacting with a Ge7 pentagonal bipyramid; whereas Ge7O has a C3v symmetric structure with a Ge atom and an O atom capping a Ge6 trigonal antiprism from the bottom and top, respectively. The structures of Ge10O- and Ge10O can be obtained by adding an O atom to different binding sites of a C3v symmetric Ge10. Chemical bonding analyses of Ge3n+1O (n = 1-3) reveal that the O atom interacts with its neighboring three Ge atoms forming one 4c-2e σ bond and two 4c-2e π bonds in the top Ge3O trigonal pyramid, while the terminal Ge atom forms one 4c-2e σ bond in the bottom Ge4 trigonal pyramid. The large HOMO-LUMO gaps of Ge3n+1O (n = 1-3) indicate that they have good stabilities. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations suggest that both Ge7O and Ge10O are dynamically stable in general at 300 and 500 K. The current work suggests that the C3v symmetric Ge3 units and the insertion growth pattern may be viable for constructing 1D germanium oxide nanostructures with the chemical formula of Ge3n+1O.

Unraveling the flexible aromaticity of C13H9+/0/-: a 2D superatomic-molecule theory

Phenalenyl (C₁₃H₉) is the smallest triangular unit of a graphene nanosheet, and has been experimentally verified to be stable in radical (C₁₃H₉˙), cationic (C₁₃H₉⁺), and anionic (C₁₃H₉^-) states. All these three species feature high symmetry and stability as well as delocalized π electrons, a visible sign of aromaticity, but their aromatic origin remains a challenge. This work reports new chemical insights into the π electrons of C₁₃H₉^+/0/- and deciphers their aromaticity using a recently emerged two-dimensional (2D) superatomic-molecule theory. 12π-C₁₃H₉⁺, 13π-C₁₃H₉˙, and 14π-C₁₃H₉^- are seen as triangular 2D superatomic molecules ^◊O₃, ^◊O₃^-, and ^◊O₃^2-, respectively, where ^◊O denotes a 2D benzenoid superatom bearing 4 π electrons. Visualized superatomic Lewis structures show that each ^◊O can dynamically adjust its π electrons to satisfy the superatomic sextet rule of benzene via superatomic lone pairs and covalent bonds. C₁₃H₉^+/0/- are representatives of adaptive aromaticity in the 2D superatomic-molecule system, exhibiting flexible π electronic structures to achieve shell-closure. Moreover, we specially adopt a progressive methodology to study the evolution of 2D periodic materials, by applying this theory to the similar family of C₆H₃N₇, C₁₈H₆N₂₂ and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) crystals, and meanwhile accounting for the special stability of g-C₃N₄. This work enriches 2D superatomic bonding chemistry and provides a useful strategy to design new 2D functional nanostructured materials.
