High performance p-channel and ambipolar OFETs based on imidazo[4,5-f]-1,10-phenanthroline-triarylamines

A series of phenanthroline-imine compounds: Computational, OLED properties and fluorimetric sensing of nitroaromatic compounds

In this study, Schiff base compounds (1-5) were synthesized by the reaction of 5-amino-1,10-phenanthroline with various aldehydes. The molecular structures of the synthesized compounds were characterized by FT-IR, ¹H/¹³C NMR and mass spectroscopic methods. Single crystals of 1 were obtained and their molecular structures in crystalline form were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction study. The sensor properties of the synthesized compounds against nitroaromatic compounds [nitrobenzene (NB), 4-nitrophenol (NP), 2,4-dintrophenol (DNP) and 1,3,5-trinitrophenol (TNP)] were investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy. Compound 3 have highest sensitivity for the sensing of 1,3,5-trinitrophenol (TNP) (Ksv: 4.63 × 10⁴ M^-1) with LOD of 4.01 µM while compound 5 showed the highest sensitivity for 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP) (Ksv: 5.71 × 10⁴ M^-1) with LOD of 4.75 µM. In addition, the structural parameters (bond angles/lengths), contour diagrams of HOMO/LUMO molecular orbitals, molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) maps, non-linear optical (NLO) and OLED properties were investigated by computational studies. According to the HOMO and LUMO energies, the NLO property of the molecule (5) is higher than both other molecules and the reference substance urea.

High-Performance Organic Field-effect Transistors from Functionalized Zinc Meso-Porphyrins

A series of new zinc porphyrins were synthesized, and their charge transport property was tuned by introducing various groups. Triarylamine was introduced to the porphyrin moiety at the meso-position as an electron donor, enhancing the charge carrier mobility. All the synthesized zinc porphyrins are thermally stable with a decomposition temperature over 178 °C. High frontier molecular orbitals levels of these compounds make them stable donor materials. SEM analysis of zinc porphyrins fabricated by spin-coating resulted in diversely self-assembled films. Field-effect transistors were fabricated using bottom-gate/top-contact architecture (BGTC) by solution-processable technique. The higher charge carrier mobility of 5.17 cm² /Vs with on/off of 10⁶ was obtained for trifluoromethyl substituted compound due to better molecular packing. In addition, GIXRD analysis revealed zinc porphyrins films crystalline nature, which supports its better charge carrier mobility. The present investigation has validated that zinc porphyrin building blocks are an attractive candidate for p-channel OFET devices.

Push-Pull Effect of Terpyridine Substituted by Triphenylamine Motive—Impact of Viscosity, Polarity and Protonation on Molecular Optical Properties

The introduction of an electron-donating triphenylamine motive into a 2,2′,6′,2′′-terpyridine (terpy) moiety, a cornerstone molecular unit in coordination chemistry, opens new ways for a rational design of photophysical properties of organic and inorganic compounds. A push-pull compound, 4′-(4-(di(4-tert-butylphenyl)amine)phenyl)-2,2′,6′,2′′-terpyridine (tBuTPAterpy), was thoroughly investigated with the use of steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopies and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Our results demonstrate that solvent parameters have an enormous influence on the optical properties of this molecule, acting as knobs for external control of its photophysics. The Intramolecular Charge Transfer (ICT) process introduces a remarkable solvent polarity effect on the emission spectra without affecting the lowest absorption band, as confirmed by DFT simulations, including solvation effects. The calculations ascribe the lowest absorption transitions to two singlet ICT excited states, S₁ and S₂, with S₁ having several orders of magnitude higher oscillator strength than the “dark” S₂ state. Temperature and viscosity investigations suggest the existence of two emitting excited states with different structural conformations. The phosphorescence emission band observed at 77 K is assigned to a localized ³terpy state. Finally, protonation studies show that tBuTPAterpy undergoes a reversible process, making it a promising probe of the pH level in the context of acidity determination.

Mitochondrial targeted rhodium(III) complexes: Synthesis, characterized and antitumor mechanism investigation

Recently, rhodium complexes have received intensive attentions due to their tunable chemical and biological properties as well as attractive antitumor activity. In this work, two imidazole triphenylamino rhodium complexes [Rh(ppy)₂L1]PF6 (Rh1) and [Rh(ppy)₂L2]PF6 (Rh2) (ppy = 2-phenylpyridine, L1 = 4-(1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthrolin-2-yl)-N,N-diphenylaniline, L2 = N-(4-(1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthrolin-2-yl)phenyl)-4-methyl-N-(p-tolyl)aniline) have been synthesized and characterized. Both complexes display stronger anticancer activity against a various of cancer cells than cisplatin and they can effectively localize to mitochondria. Further mechanism studies show that Rh1 induce caspase-dependent apoptosis through mitochondrial damage, down-regulate the expression of B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2)/Bcl2-associated x (Bax) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) elevation. Our work provides a strategy for the construction of highly effective anticancer agents targeting mitochondrial metabolism through rational modification of rhodium complexes.

Picene and PTCDI based solution processable ambipolar OFETs

Facile and efficient solution-processed bottom gate top contact organic field-effect transistor was fabricated by employing the active layer of picene (donor, D) and N,N'-di(dodecyl)-perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic diimide (acceptor, A). Balanced hole (0.12 cm2/Vs) and electron (0.10 cm2/Vs) mobility with Ion/off of 104 ratio were obtained for 1:1 ratio of D/A blend. On increasing the ratio of either D or A, the charge carrier mobility and Ion/off ratio improved than that of the pristine molecules. Maximum hole (µmax,h) and electron mobilities (µmax,e) were achieved up to 0.44 cm2/Vs for 3:1 and 0.25 cm2/Vs for 1:3, (D/A) respectively. This improvement is due to the donor phase function as the trap center for minority holes and decreased trap density of the dielectric layer, and vice versa. High ionization potential (- 5.71 eV) of 3:1 and lower electron affinity of (- 3.09 eV) of 1:3 supports the fine tuning of frontier molecular orbitals in the blend. The additional peak formed for the blends at high negative potential of - 1.3 V in cyclic voltammetry supports the molecular level electronic interactions of D and A. Thermal studies supported the high thermal stability of D/A blends and SEM analysis of thin films indicated their efficient molecular packing. Quasi-π-π stacking owing to the large π conjugated plane and the crystallinity of the films are well proved by GIXRD. DFT calculations also supported the electronic distribution of the molecules. The electron density of states (DOS) of pristine D and A molecules specifies the non-negligible interaction coupling among the molecules. This D/A pair has unlimited prospective for plentiful electronic applications in non-volatile memory devices, inverters and logic circuits.
