Abstract
Carbonic Anhydrases (CAs) are an important family of metalloenzymes that contain zinc (Zn2+) ions in their active site and catalyze the conversion of carbon dioxide to bicarbonate and proton and found in all living organisms. Sulfonamides are well-known inhibitors of CAs isoenzymes. In this study, a series of benzenesulfonamide derivatives (9a-h) containing 1,2,3-triazole-moiety were designed, synthesized and their structures were characterized by spectroscopic methods. In addition, molecular structures of compounds 5a, 5 b, 9e and 9f were elucidated by X-ray diffraction technique. To investigate drug similarity of 9a-h compounds, Lipinski's five rules (ADMET: absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity) were carried out by in silico studies. According to results, the compounds showed drug-like properties. Docking studies were applied to determine the scores, interactions and binding modes of compounds 9a-h against hCA I and hCA II enzymes. Compound 9c (-5.13 kcal/mol docking score) against hCA I enzyme and 9 h (-5.32 kcal/mol docking score) against hCA II enzyme showed potent inhibitory properties. The binding interactions of the compounds with the carbonic anhydrases were examined by docking studies.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Abstract
In this study, Schiff base compounds (1-5) were synthesized by the reaction of 5-amino-1,10-phenanthroline with various aldehydes. The molecular structures of the synthesized compounds were characterized by FT-IR, 1H/13C NMR and mass spectroscopic methods. Single crystals of 1 were obtained and their molecular structures in crystalline form were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction study. The sensor properties of the synthesized compounds against nitroaromatic compounds [nitrobenzene (NB), 4-nitrophenol (NP), 2,4-dintrophenol (DNP) and 1,3,5-trinitrophenol (TNP)] were investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy. Compound 3 have highest sensitivity for the sensing of 1,3,5-trinitrophenol (TNP) (Ksv: 4.63 × 104 M-1) with LOD of 4.01 µM while compound 5 showed the highest sensitivity for 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP) (Ksv: 5.71 × 104 M-1) with LOD of 4.75 µM. In addition, the structural parameters (bond angles/lengths), contour diagrams of HOMO/LUMO molecular orbitals, molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) maps, non-linear optical (NLO) and OLED properties were investigated by computational studies. According to the HOMO and LUMO energies, the NLO property of the molecule (5) is higher than both other molecules and the reference substance urea.

Abstract
Benzenesulfonamide-based imine compounds 5-8 were prepared and screened for their binding properties to the FSdsDNA. The structures of synthesized compounds were elucidated by the spectroscopic and analytical methods. Compounds 5-8 were screened for their interactions with the FSdsDNA. Compound 8 showed the highest binding affinity to the FSdsDNA with intrinsic binding constant of 3.10 × 104 M-1. The compounds caused the quenching of the DNA-EB emission indicating displacement of EB (ethidium bromide) from the FSdsDNA. Finally, the binding interactions between the DNA and binder molecules 5-8 were examined by the molecular docking studies. The compounds locate approximately same region of the minor groove of DNA via hydrogen bonding contacts between the sulfonamide oxygen atoms and the DG10/DG16 nucleotides of DNA.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Abstract
A series of Schiff base compounds (ER1-ER5) containing a 1,2,3-triazole and carboxylic acid groups were synthesized and their chemosensory properties towards anions (I-, CO32-, SO42-, NO2-, NO3-, CH3COO-, ClO3-, CNO-, N3-) and cations (Al3+, Ag+, Co2+, Cr3+, Cu2+, Fe3+, Hg2+, Mn2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Pb2+). The compounds were also used as fluorescence probs for the detection of nitroaromatic compounds. The structural characterization of the synthesized compounds was elucidated using methods such as FT-IR, UV, FL, LC-MS, MALDI-TOF MS, 1H(13C) NMR. The effect of substitute groups (-CH3, -OCH3, -OH, -Cl and -Br) on the synthesized Schiff bases (ER1-ER5) on the chemosensory properties were compared. As the groups changed, the sensor and quenching effects of the molecule against anions and cations changed. Compound ER3 having methoxy (OCH3) group exhibited selective sensor properties against Fe3+ ion while compound ER5 with a chloride substitute (Cl) group showed selectivity for Cr3+ ion under 254 nm UV-lamp. The substitute effect was also observed for the sensing of anions. Under 254 nm UV-lamp, ER2 having the -OH group has a selective sensing property for CNO- and ER4 with the bromide (Br) group exhibited selectivity for N3- ion. The synthesized Schiff base compounds were also tested as fluorescence probs for the sensing of some nitroaromatic explosives.

Abstract
Two imine compounds, 4-[(E)-(2-methoxybenzylidene)amino]phenol (L(1)) and 4-[(E)-(3,4-dimethoxybenzylidene)amino]phenol (L(2)) were synthesized and characterized by the analytical and spectroscopic methods. The electrochemical and photoluminescence properties of the imine compounds L(1) and L(2) were investigated in different solvents. The compounds L(1) and L(2) show different redox processes at some potentials. The molecular structures of two Schiff base compounds are broadly similar, differing principally in the position, the number of methoxy (-OCH3) groups and dihedral angles between aromatic rings. While the compound L(1) has only one methoxy group located on the o-position with respect to the imine bond (C=N), the L(2) contains two methoxy groups on the p-m-positions with respect to the imine bond. The imine compounds show two or three emission bands in the 619-832 nm range in organic solvents. In the 1.0×10(-3) M concentration, the compounds have the highest excitation and emission bands. The imine compounds L(1) and L(2) were screened for their in vitro cytotoxicity on HeLa cell lines using the xCELLigence system (Real Time Cell Analyzer).

Abstract
A polymeric potassium complex of p-nitrophenol was synthesized and characterized by analytical and spectroscopic techniques. Molecular structure of the complex was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction study. X-ray structural data show that crystals contain polymeric K(+) complex of p-nitrophenol. Asymmetric unit consists of one p-nitrophenolate, one K(+) ion and one water molecule. All bond lengths and angles in the phenyl rings have normal Csp2-Csp2 values and are in the expected ranges. The p-nitrophenolate is close to planar with small distortions by some atoms. Each potassium ion in the polymeric structure is identical and eight-coordinate, bonded to four nitro, two phenolate oxygen atoms from five p-nitrophenolate ligands and two oxygen atoms from two water molecules. Electronic, electrochemical, photoluminescence and thermal properties of the complex were also investigated.

Abstract
Two Schiff base compounds, N,N'-bis(2-methoxy phenylidene)-1,5-diamino naphthalene (L(1)) and N,N'-bis(3,4,5-trimethoxy phenylidene)-1,5-diamino naphthalene (L(2)) were synthesized and characterized by the analytical and spectroscopic methods. The electrochemical and photoluminescence properties of the Schiff bases were investigated in the different conditions. The compounds L(1) and L(2) show the reversible redox processes at some potentials. The sensor properties of the Schiff bases were examined and color changes were observed upon addition of the metal cations, such as Hg(II), Cu(II), Co(II) and Al(III). The Schiff base compounds show the bathochromic shift from 545 to 585 nm. The single crystals of the compounds (L(1)) and (L(2)) were obtained from the methanol solution and characterized structurally by the X-ray crystallography technique. The molecule L(2) is centrosymmetric whereas the L(1) has no crystallographically imposed molecular symmetry. However, the molecular structures for these compounds are quite similar, differing principally in the conformation about methoxy groups and the dihedral angle between the two aromatic rings and diamine naphthalene.

Abstract
Three Schiff base ligands (H(2)L(1)-H(2)L(3)) with N(2)O(2) donor sites were synthesized by condensation of 1,5-diaminonapthalene with benzaldehyde derivatives. A series of Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Mn(II) and Cr(III) complexes were prepared and characterized by spectroscopic and analytical methods. Thermal, electrochemical and alkane oxidation reactions of the ligands and their metal complexes were investigated. Extensive application of 1D ((1)H, (13)C NMR) and 2D (COSY, HETCOR, HMBC and TOSCY) NMR techniques were used to characterize the structures of the ligands and establish the (1)H and (13)C resonance assignments of the three ligands. Ligands H(2)L(1) and H(2)L(3) were obtained as single crystals from THF solution and characterized by X-ray diffraction. Both molecules are centrosymmetric and asymmetric unit contains one half of the molecule. Catalytic alkane oxidation reactions with the transition metal complexes investigated using cyclohexane and cyclooctane as substrates. The Cu(II) and Cr(III) complexes showed good catalytic activity in the oxidation of cyclohexane and cyclooctane to desired oxidized products. Electrochemical and thermal properties of the compounds were also investigated.

Abstract
Complexes of trimethoprim (TMP), with Cu(II), Zn(II), Pt(II), Ru(III) and Fe(III) have been synthesized. Then, these complexes have been characterized by spectroscopic techniques involving UV-vis, IR, mass and (1)H NMR. CHN elemental analysis, electrochemical and thermal behavior of complexes have also been investigated. The electrochemical properties of all complexes have been investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) using glassy carbon electrode. The biological activity of the complexes has been evaluated by examining their ability to bind to calf-thymus DNA (CT DNA) with UV spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. UV studies of the interaction of the complexes with DNA have shown that these compounds can bind to CT DNA. The binding constants of the complexes with CT DNA have also been calculated. The cyclic voltammograms of the complexes in the presence of CT DNA have shown that the complexes can bind to CT DNA by both the intercalative and the electrostatic binding mode. The antimicrobial activity of these complexes has been evaluated against three Gram-positive and four Gram-negative bacteria. Antifungal activity against two different fungi has been evaluated and compared with the reference drug TMP. Almost all types of complexes show excellent activity against all type of bacteria and fungi. The morphology of the CT DNA, TMP, metal ions and metal complexes has been investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). To get the SEM images, the interaction of compounds with CT DNA has been studied by means of differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) at CT DNA modified pencil graphite electrode (PGE). The decrease in intensity of the guanine oxidation signals has been used as an indicator for the interaction mechanism.

Abstract
In this study, three novel salicylidene phosphonate ligands, diethyl (4-{[(1E)-(2-hydroxyphenyl)methylidene]amino}benzyl)phosphonate (HL1), diethyl (4-{[(1E)-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)methylidene]amino}benzyl)phosphonate (HL2) and diethyl (4-{[(1E)-(2,4-dihydroxyphenyl)methylidene]amino}benzyl)phosphonate (HL3) were synthesized and characterized by the analytical and spectroscopic techniques. We obtained their single crystals from the ethanolic solution. There are intramolecular phenol-imine hydrogen bonds in all three compounds between O1 and N1 atoms. The ligand HL3 contains a second phenol group and this is makes an intermolecular hydrogen bond with the phosphine oxide of a neighbouring molecule O2-O3 (under symmetry operation -x, 0.5+y, 0.5-z). In order to investigate the redox behaviours of the salicylidene phosphonate ligands (HL1-HL3), we were studied electrochemical properties of the ligands at the different pH and scan rates.

Abstract
In this study, we prepared the Schiff base ligand (L) and its Cu(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes. The compounds were characterized by the analytical and spectroscopic methods. The ligand (L) behaves as a bidentate ligand and coordinates to the metal ions via the nitrogen atoms. The complexes have the mononuclear structures. The analytical and spectroscopic results indicated that the chloride ions coordinate to the metal ions. The complexes have the general formulae [M(L)(Cl)(2)] (M: Cu(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) metal ions). Electrochemical properties were investigated as ligand and metal centres in the different solvents and at the scan rates, respectively. The thermal properties of the metal complexes were studied in the N(2) atmosphere. We investigated the improved catalytic activity of the Cu(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes on the cyclohexane as a substrate. Obtained data showed that the best catalyst is the Cu(II) complex. The single crystal of the ligand (L) was obtained from CH(3)CN solution. There is a C-H...N H-bond linking the molecules into chains (C6)...N(2) 3.4415(18)A under symmetry operation (x+1,y,z) as well as pi-pi stacking on the outside of the "V" shape--nothing on the inside.

Abstract
In this study, the Schiff base ligand trans-N,N'-bis[(2,4-dichlorophenyl) methylidene] cyclohexane-1,2-diamine (L) and its copper(II), nickel(II) and palladium(II) transition metal complexes were prepared and characterized by the analytical and spectroscopic methods. The (1)H((13)C) NMR spectra of the ligand and its diamagnetic complexes were recorded in DMSO-d(6) solvent and obtained data confirm that the nitrogen atoms of the imine groups coordinated to the metal ions. Electrochemical properties of the ligand and its metal complexes were investigated in the DMF solvent at the 100 and 250 mVs(-1) scan rates. The ligand and metal complexes showed both reversible and irreversible processes at these scan rates. The single crystal of the ligand (L) was obtained from MeOH solution, and its crystal structure was determined by X-ray diffraction. The C-Hcdots, three dots, centeredCl hydrogen bonding interactions in the molecule were seen which increase the stability of the crystal structure. The antimicrobial activity studies of the ligand and its metal complexes were carried out by using the various bacteria and fungi.

Abstract
In this study, N,N'-bis[(3,4-dichlorophenyl)methylidene]cyclohexane-1,4-diamine (L) and its Cu(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes were prepared and characterized by the analytical and spectroscopic methods. The analytical data show the composition of the metal complex to be [M(2)L(Cl)(4)(H(2)O)(2)], where L is the Schiff base ligand. The conductance data indicate that all the complexes are non-electrolytes. The compound (L) behaves as a monodentate ligand. But, obtained complexes have binuclear nature. The electrochemical properties of the metal complexes are dependent on reversible, irreversible and quasi-reversible redox waves in the anodic and cathodic regions due to oxidation and reduction of the metal ions. The single crystal of the ligand (L) was obtained from CH(3)CN solution. Space group and crystal system of the ligand are P2(1)/C and monoclinic, respectively.

Abstract
The dimeric complex, [C20H20CuN2O2]2, has been prepared and characterized by thermal analysis, IR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. The Cu atom in the binuclear complex exists in a distorted square-pyramidal configuration, defined by three O atoms and two N atoms. The crystal structure is stabilized by intermolecular C-H...O hydrogen bonding interaction. The electrochemical property of the complex was investigated in CH2Cl2 by cyclic voltammetry at 100 mV s(-1) scan rate.

Abstract
Crystals of the 3,3'-5,5'-tetra-tert-butyl-4,4'-diphenoquinone (TTBDQ) in the reaction mixture DCM/MeOH (1:1, v/v) were obtained as a result of CC coupling reaction of the sterically hindered phenol (2,6-di-tert-butylphenol, DTBP) using the binuclear Co(II) complexes. The oxidation product (TTBDQ), C(28)H(40)O(2), crystallizes in the space group P1 with one-half molecule in the asymmetric unit and the other half generated by an inversion centre. The diphenoquinone moiety is planar within +/-0.016(3)A. The crystal structure is stabilized by intramolecular C-H...O hydrogen bonds. The spectroscopic and electrochemical properties of the TTBDQ also have been studied.

Abstract
In this study, we synthesized the amine compound 2-(2-aminoethyliminomethyl)phenol (H(3)A) as the starting material, and then we prepared the polydentate Schiff base ligands from the reactions of the amine compound (H(3)A) with phtaldialdehyde (H(2)L), 4-methyl-2,6-di-formlyphenol (H(3)L(1)) and 4-t-butyl-2,6-di-formylphenol (H(3)L(2)) in the ethanol solution. Moreover, the complexes Cd(II), Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(II) and Sn(II) of the ligands H(2)L, H(3)L(1) and H(3)L(2) have been prepared. All compounds have been characterized by the analytical and spectroscopic methods. In addition, the magnetic susceptibility and molar conductance measurements have been made. The catalytic properties of the mono- and binuclear Co(II) and Cu(II) complexes have been studied on the 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol (3,5-DTBC) and ascorbic acid (aa) as a substrate. The oxidative C-C coupling properties of the Co(II) and Cu(II) complexes have been investigated on the sterically hindered 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol (dtbp). The antimicrobial activity properties of the ligands and their mono- and binuclear complexes have been studied against the bacteria and fungi. The results have been compared to the antibacterial and fungi drugs. The TGA curves show that the decomposition takes place in three steps for all complexes. Electrochemical properties of the complexes Cu(II) and Ni(II) have been investigated for the first time in acetonitrile by cyclic voltammetry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Preventive measures including patient education can reduce hip fractures related to osteoporosis. Sometimes osteoporosis can be diagnosed with fractures or with a serious health problem, and most women are probably unaware of the risk factors which can be changed by prevention. The first step in preventing osteoporosis in women should be to make them aware of the risk factors. OBJECTIVES Our aim was to determine Turkish women's knowledge about and attitudes to osteoporosis and its prevention. METHODS A total of 311 women who applied to the Family Medicine department of the Middle East Technical University Medical Center were asked to fill in a questionnaire about osteoporosis. Only 270 of the 311 women who completed the entire questionnaire were included in the study. RESULTS Nearly 90% of the women surveyed thought they were somewhat familiar with osteoporosis. However, >65% were unaware that the disease is directly responsible for disabling hip fractures, and >40% were unable to identify significant risk factors. Only 36% of the respondents could correctly identify the calcium-rich foods among the choices. CONCLUSION According to our survey, a considerable number of the Turkish women in our settlement are unaware of the risk factors and the consequences of osteoporosis. Therefore, the women have inadequate knowledge of osteoporosis. There should be information resources easily accessible for the patients. The most important organizational incentives for providing patient information are further health promotion by the health authorities and the support of family physicians and the primary health care team.
