Abstract
Soybeans have traditionally been a staple part of the human diet being highly rich in protein and lipid content. In an addition to the high nutritional components, soybeans have several functional components, like isoflavones, saponins, lecithin, and oligosaccharides. Soybeans emerge as a healthy functional food option. Isoflavones are most notable functional component of soybeans, exhibiting antioxidant activity while preventing plant-related diseases (e.g., antimicrobial and antiherbivore activities) and having positive effects on the life quality of plants. Isoflavones are thus sometimes referred to as phytochemicals. The latest research trends evince substantial interest in the biological efficacy of isoflavones in the human body as well as in plants and their related mechanisms. However, there is little information on the relationship between isoflavones and plants than beneficial human effects. This review discusses what is known about the physiological communication (transport and secretion) between isoflavones and plants, especially in soybeans.

Abstract
Membrane organic anion-transporting polypeptides (OATPs) are responsible for the drug transmembrane transport within the human body. The function of OATP2B1 transporter can be inhibited by various natural compounds. Despite increased research interest in soya as a part of human diet, the effect of its active components to interact with hOATP2B1 has not been elucidated in a complex extent. This in vitro study examined the inhibitory effect of main soy isoflavones (daidzin, daidzein, genistin, genistein, glycitin, glycitein, biochanin A, formononetin) and their metabolites formed in vivo (S-equol, O-desmethylangolensin) towards human OATP2B1 transporter. MDCKII cells overexpressing hOATP2B1 were employed to determine quantitative inhibitory parameters of the tested compounds and to analyze mechanism/s of the inhibitory interaction. The study showed that aglycones of soy isoflavones and the main biologically active metabolite S-equol were able to significantly inhibit hOATP2B1-mediated transport. The Ki values for most of aglycones range from 1 to 20 μM. In contrast, glucosides did not exhibit significant inhibitory effect. The kinetic analysis did not indicate a uniform type of inhibition towards the hOATP2B1 although predominant mechanism of inhibition seemed to be competitive. These findings may suggest that tested soy isoflavones and their metabolites might affect transport of xenobiotics including drugs across tissue barriers via hOATP2B1.

Abstract
Sesquiterpenes, 15-carbon compounds formed from three isoprenoid units, are the main components of plant essential oils. Sesquiterpenes occur in human food, but they are principally taken as components of many folk medicines and dietary supplements. The aim of our study was to test and compare the potential inhibitory effect of acyclic sesquiterpenes, trans-nerolidol, cis-nerolidol and farnesol, on the activities of the main xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes in rat and human liver in vitro. Rat and human subcellular fractions, relatively specific substrates, corresponding coenzymes and HPLC, spectrophotometric or spectrofluorometric analysis of product formation were used. The results showed significant inhibition of cytochromes P450 (namely CYP1A, CYP2B and CYP3A subfamilies) activities by all tested sesquiterpenes in rat as well as in human hepatic microsomes. On the other hand, all tested sesquiterpenes did not significantly affect the activities of carbonyl-reducing enzymes and conjugation enzymes. The results indicate that acyclic sesquiterpenes might affect CYP1A, CYP2B and CYP3A mediated metabolism of concurrently administered drugs and other xenobiotics. The possible drug-sesquiterpene interactions should be verified in in vivo experiments.

Abstract
An interaction of drug with food, herbs, and dietary supplements is usually the consequence of a physical, chemical or physiologic relationship between a drug and a product consumed as food, nutritional supplement or over-the-counter medicinal plant. The current educational review aims at reminding to the prescribing physicians that the most clinically relevant drug-food interactions may not be strictly limited to those with grapefruit juice and with the Saint John's Wort herbal extract and may be responsible for changes in drug plasma concentrations, which in turn decrease efficacy or led to sometimes life-threatening toxicity. Common situations handled in clinical practice such as aging, concomitant medications, transplant recipients, patients with cancer, malnutrition, HIV infection and those receiving enteral or parenteral feeding may be at increased risk of drug-food or drug-herb interactions. Medications with narrow therapeutic index or potential life-threatening toxicity, e.g., the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, opioid analgesics, cardiovascular medications, warfarin, anticancer drugs and immunosuppressants may be at risk of significant drug-food interactions to occur. Despite the fact that considerable effort has been achieved to increase patient' and doctor's information and ability to anticipate their occurrence and consequences in clinical practice, a thorough and detailed health history and dietary recall are essential for identifying potential problems in order to optimize patient prescriptions and drug dosing on an individual basis as well as to increase the treatment risk/benefit ratio.
