The ability of Silybum marianum to phytoremediate cadmium and/or diesel oil from the soil

Green and sustainable practices for an energy plant cultivation on naturally contaminated versus spiked soils. The impact of ageing soil pollution in the circular economy framework

Silybum marianum L. Gaertn. or milk thistle is an energy-produced weed that has been shown to be tolerant of heavy metal-contaminated soils. In the present study, its cultivation was studied in soils laboratory-spiked (artificial) with Cu and Zn solutions. Meanwhile, plant growing on naturally contaminated soils of Mediterranean regions, both urban and rural, was investigated. The metal concentrations spiked in artificial polluted soils were estimated to be roughly equivalent to those in naturally contaminated soils. Plants grown in artificially contaminated soils incorporated the metal added to the soils more rapidly and in higher proportions. The contamination of soil samples was carried out using different chemical reagents, salts containing the metals with oxidation number II, highlighting the fact that the reagent containing the metal is crucial regarding artificial soil pollution. Statistically significant differences were observed between the individual pollution patterns, as far as plant metals uptake concern. It was also found that the aged, contaminated soils transfer lower levels of metals to the plants. Therefore, aging or weathering of contamination alters toxicity levels in the soil environment by determining transport and uptake into the soil-to-plant system. Eventually, from the present research, it emerged the fact that in urban soils that have aged perennial pollution, the uptake of metals by plants is probably lower than in rural ones. Furthermore, with proper management, it is possible to grow plants, with low nutrient requirements, in urban soils by adopting smart, green and eco-friendly techniques, enhancing sustainable cultivation in the framework of circular economy.

Phytoremediation of heavy metals and total petroleum hydrocarbon and nutrients enhancement of Typha latifolia in petroleum secondary effluent for biomass growth

Phytoremediation is an innovative tool which can be used for the treatment of industrial and agricultural wastewater. Typha latifolia (T. latifolia) is an aquatic plant used for phytoremediation of heavy metals (HMs) like cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), and TPH (total petroleum hydrocarbon) for the treatment of petroleum secondary effluent (PSE). During this experiment, the growth of T. latifolia in biomass, nutrient concentrations, and heavy metals were studied. The results indicated that T. latifolia was more tolerant to Cd, Co, and Mn due to its transfer index (TI) which was found to be greater than 2.9. The enrichment coefficients of the metals, Cd and Co present in the root were found to be higher than 3.31 to 2.56 and 5.35 to 3.55, respectively unlike the stem of T. latifolia. But, the enrichment coefficient of Mn was found to be 1.98 which was expected to be 3.51 at 75%. Similarly, the enrichment coefficients of all the metals, except for Co, in roots of T. latifolia were higher than 5.36. (TI) for Co (2.95) and Mn (2.55) which is better as compared to the enrichment coefficients of Cd (2.35) and TPH (3.45) in PSE. Thus, there is a possibility that PSE could be a source of important nutrients.

Combined effects of cadmium and oil sludge on sorghum: growth, physiology, and contaminant removal

The physiological and biochemical responses of Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench. to cadmium (Cd) (30 mg kg^-1) and oil sludge (OS) (16 g kg^-1) present in soil both separately and as a mixture were studied in pot experiments. The addition of oil sludge as a co-contaminant decreased Cd entry into the plant by almost 80% and simultaneously decreased the stimulation of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase. The decrease in glutathione reductase (GR) activity and the increase in glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity under the influence of oil sludge indicated that its components were detoxified by conjugation with glutathione. Cd additionally activated the antioxidant and detoxifying potential of the plant enzymatic response to stress. This helped to enhance the degradation rate of oil sludge in the rhizosphere, in which the participation of the root-released enzymes in the degradation could be possible. Cd increased the extent of soil clean-up from oil sludge, mainly owing to the elimination of paraffins, naphthenes, and mono- and bicyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The mutual influence of the pollutants on the biochemical responses of sorghum and on soil clean-up was evaluated. The results are important for understanding the antistress and detoxification responses of the remediating plant to combined environmental pollution.
